View original topic: U joints on Baja?
Perry Wed Dec 01, 2004 7:55 am

I was looking through the baja bugs and buggies book and came across the part where he talks about using datsun z car half shafts in a baja. I have several sets from building datsuns and can do the machine work to put them on and clearance them for travel. Does anyone have experience with these?
I want to know:
angles they can be run at?
do you need wider trailing arms? how much wider?
any other comments?

that was the hot set-up in the 60's and 70's, but today most people upgrade to Porsche 930's because it is cheaper, eaiser, faster, and a much lighter set up.... the message here is weight

I hear you on weight, but this is a low budget daily driver and weekend warrior. mostly used at low speed in very rough terrain, the mud and rocks of southwest PA. I want more travel to keep up with my rock crawling jeep buddy.
I already have a couple sets of the shafts, and the machine work costs only my time.
Any one else have input.
Thanks for the reply.

We ran them for several years and then stoped using them. The joint can be trimed and run at diferent angles depending on how much they are modified. The U-joint is super strong but the sliding joint (on balls) is the week point and the large diameter tube will split farely easy. If you do decide to use them be sure you set them up to use the stock sholder bolts. Vic.
