Hi there,

My 57 Oval with standard engine started to slip the clutch last night, I thought of the obvious reasons such as leaking seal behind flywheel, worn/broken presure plate or out of adjustment. To my mind its more likely the pressure plate cause the action on the peddle feels weak as though there is little pressure on the disk. There is the correct amount of play at the peddle too. What do you guys recon?

Cheers

Arnie

if you end up putting a new clutch in,do yourself a faver and use a bus clutch instead of a beetle one for same year. the pedal assy. in a 57 and older is the worst job to do on an oval due to length of assembly that goes inside tunnel and seperate brace and etc.

cyberdyne: when you say a "standard" engine would that mean original engine and maybe a split case transaxle?

and bill may: what advantage does the bus clutch plate have over a type 1 clutch plate? i am planning on replacing the clutch plate in my oval (1600cc, with a later swingaxle) and front main oil seal inbetween the flywheel and crankshaft/case, i drove the car for a bit with not knowing that the main oil seal was broken.. there seems to be oil marks on the clutch plate, but the pressure plate looks fine. should i be able to keep my pressure plate ( if i dont change to type 2 clutch plate, or type1 pressure plates are incompatible with type 2 clutches )? it only has about 50 miles on it.

clutch disc is same bus/typeIII,beetle. the pressur plate is 1100 lbs. instead of 900 lbs a beetle has. not the same as 1700 but same price as beetle.
