i have a 62 that has an aftermarket steering wheel. when i turn the wheel the horn honks at one point, the same place every time. the steering wheel just has a button in the middle and it is not touching. also now i have broken the wire close to the end of the steering column. how easy is it to pull a new wire down the column? or any other suggestions?

broken wire is touching and grounding the circuit. i tape the new wire to end of old and grab other end and pull it on through- easy job.

Check out this link. It should bring you up to speed on everything you need to know about your horn.
Good Luck

Do any of you know what John Henry (The Bug Shop) is up to now? I read every word of his web site when I first got into the hobby. Loved it. Recently I tried to contribute using PayPal and the address he has listed. The payment got kicked back to me.

I'm still around guys.....
I moved this past summer, so of course all the e-mail address changes have made me "adrift at sea" from some viewpoints.
I simply don't have the bandwidth to do what I used to at the bugshop site, but as long as the costs don't become too burdensome, I'll keep the site up.
I am still heavily involved in the hobby, albiet deeply intrenched in vintage-land. I own my beloved Oval (I'll be buried inthat car) and two early splits. Zarwerks(.com) keeps me very busy, is fun and funds my hobby nicely.
I really wish I could continue to provide the e-mail techincal help I used to, but I just can't do it anymore. I have a "day job" and two kids, you know the drill. But it is very nice to hear that people are still using my site (some of that stuff there is OLD, but still useful). I did just recently update the "What's New?" page a bit...... looks like I need to update that PayPal "Tip Jar" link too. Thanks for the heads up, I miss the occasion "plink" of coin to glass........
Happy New Year everyone.... |

The shaft that the wheel is attatched to is electrically insulated from ground. When you push the horn button, you are grounding the steering column, which completes the circuit to the horn. Anything that grounds the shaft will blow your horn. Something is touching somewhere and grounding your horn. Try turning the wheel with the wire disconnected, with the end just sticking out, not touching anything. Many aftermarket wheel/horn button setups are problematic in this regard.

well i took the wheel off and the spring out and it still honks at one point when i turn the wheel. sounds like something inside the steering column is rubbing. sooo i will just put a horn button on the steeting column, don't want to but it is about inspection time. also i replaced the aftermarket steering wheel with a stock one off a '65. at least now tne turn signals will self cancel!!!

Check where the steering column comes out of the body, before it hooks up to the steering box. Above the mastercylinder where it comes through. I have seen them rub there.

well i found the problem, i pulled the gas tank and saw that the steering box looked like it had slipped down a little and the steering shaft was rubbing on the column. i loosened the steering box and moved it up a little bit which moved the steering shaft up a bit and off the column. now the horn only honks when the button is pushed. thanks to everyone that that helped. keith
