Where do I find the engine ID number? I am restoring a 64 beetle for my brother. Question now is to rebuild the engine or purchase one already rebuilt. If I have the engine that came with the car, I want to rebuild it and keep the car complete.
Is the ID number just below the generator stand? I see a stamped number 7781871 in that location. Engine is a single port, in need of a LOT of work.
Apologies if this has been gone over before. I searched, I swear... |

The main problem that I found with this topic is that, your motor is 20-30 yrs old. Who knows what has been modified to the motor. Ie my 1300 or what I thought was a 1300 is now a 1641. |

Agreed that can be a point of trouble. I am OK with measuring the pistons, cylinders, crank stroke etc to determine what has been done if anything. My thing is that if I have the "correct" cases, regadless of what evil someone else may have done to the engine, I will use the cases in the rebuild. |

Thanks everyone for the help. Can I assume that you derived that information from the table that is listed in the "Archive" section of this site? I had come to somewhat of the same conclusion, but wanted to be sure. |
