There are several things that can happen. The shifter can be loose at the floor, the coupler under the back seat can come apart, the "Hockey Stick" that the shift coupler connects to on the transmission side can wear and pull out of the shift forks. It everything looks good after inspection, remove the oil fill plug on the side of the transaxle, look inside with a flashlight and find the brass sliding gear toward the top left side. You should be able to get a long screwdriver through the oil fill hole and slide the gear ... I think rearward..(it has been a long time) until it feels like ir engages in something. Ok my mind is telling me rearward but my recollection is telling me push it forward but it will only move one way and it will feel like it pops into place. The last time this happened to me I was driving my 74 a little aggressively. I popped it back into place in 1994 and remembered to shift it a little easier but it worked fine until I retired the car last year. |

You sound confused.
Trust your instinct: it is rearward.
It's a sign that it's time for a trans oil change. |

Thats what happened to my 73 and it was stuck in second. I ended up getting a used tranny to put in and I found a hockey stick at www.vwhelp.com and I fixed my other tranny. Its nice to have a spare. Has it been popping out of gear at all or has any gear stopped working? |

If the gear oil level is allowed to drop far enough, you will start to experience problems. That's a fact. The stuck-in-second gear is symptomatic of the detent ball(s) hanging up in the bore(s), which can actually allow engaging second gear and fourth gear simultaneously, which is what you experienced. The detents are there to prevent this, but they can't do their job if they are allowed to go dry.
Another common woe is the reverse pop-out, which is symptomatic of the reverse drive gear wearing out, or having a tooth or two broken off. You can usually get by with just replacing the drive gear, which is brass, and wears more easily than the steel of the 1st/2nd slider gear that operates it. For the adventuresome type, it means pulling the trans out and pulling the side covers, nose cone, gear cluster carrier, and replacing the reverse drive gear, if inspection of the 1st/2nd slider reveals that replacement is unnecessary. If the slider gear is shot, unless you've the special tools, fixtures, and experience, it's going to mean a trip to someone who does.
Under the circumstances, I'd start perusing the classifieds for a good used gear box. |

The only way to replace it is to drop the engine and tranny and remove the nosecone of the tranny and put in a new hockey stick. If you were near me Id let you have my spare tranny. The only thing that was wrong with it was the fact that the hockey stick was worn and casme out of the forks so it couldnt catch any of them and was just stuck. I could be wrong though. Joemac seems to know more about trannys than I do. I couldnt tell you anything about them other than whats in the nose cone. He very well could be right. |

Where did you get that from? There is no brass gear inside any VW transmission. There never has been, never will be. Brass is not strong enough to make gears from.
In this case, the steel reverse idler gear he has is worn out and needs replacing.
When the hockey stick pops out of the shift rod end, it doesn't necessisarily mean that the hockey stick is worn out. Like Darby described, it happened to him once 10 years ago. Its worn out when it happens repeatedly. |

You know how someone says, "he's forgotten more than you'll ever know,,,"? Well, I'm one of those guys, and I'm forgetting.
The cage that holds the reverse drive gear is brass. My bad.
I'm retired. It's been years since I rebuilt my last transaxles.
That doesn't give you, or anyone else the right to jump down my fuckin thoat. |

The syncro hub on 4th gear, and/or the 3rd - 4th gear slider are worn out. Continuing to drive it will cause it to pop out more often.
What's a BAP tranny? |

driving in 4th with shift knob used as hand rest causes the synchro hub to wear. |
