Hi all, little help here. Picked up a '60 beetle that is rough but basically complete and unrestored. My question is with the engine. It is a 36 hp but the engine # reads 1-1017643. Research indicates possibly from a '55? It also has a hand-crank type crank pulley nut. Guess that could have been swapped on? Anybody with a reliable source for determining the actual year of this engine? Thanks

says November, 1955. (1956 model year)

Beetles didn't normally have a crank nut at that time so maybe someone had it in a Bus. Buses did but that is not a Bus engine #.

Thanks for the info...this engine runs ok, but it has been sitting for 5+ years(allegedly) so whats the best method of flushing one of these babies out. I'm sure Kerosene and ATF are ok for old tractors and fords, but what about the VW? Thanks.

Do you want a good running,correct"60 motor?Im selling mine!

KantDriveFast Sun Jan 09, 2005 5:59 pm

I plan on restoring this car as accurately as possible to its orig. state. I guess it depends on how much you want for yours vs. what I can get for mine. My chassis# is oct.'59, do you know the month of your engine? -Thanks

My mistake, I was looking at VIN #, not engine #.

March, 1955 is correct.

The numbers on this site are also from Progressive Refinements

My other comments are accurate.

mine is march'60;i really havent thought about it much, just want it out of my garage so whatever you think is fair. Its a complete motor with heater boxes and properly functioning thermostat, doesnt leave its mark anywhere, and only has 115,000+kms(its an og euro model!)let me know what you'd pay for it,or if not interested ill post it in the 58-67 parts section

Hey Alan, I'll five you $150 for it so long as it is a runner.

Alan Willis Mon Jan 10, 2005 5:46 pm

Make it $200 and its yours!

I'll probably just run this one for now...nobodys gonna be checkin numbers on it anyway. $200.00 is a nice deal for a running spare. Almost worth the 9 hour drive!
