I've got a 2.2 liter subaru motor and tranny kickin around, and I figured I might be able to put it in the 914. Anybody heard of this being done, or not being done for good reasons?

why?

double why? it's got water in it ya know.

Yea, Yea, so its got water in it, but Its turbocharged, and good for gobbs for HP, not to mention, a bit more fuel efficiant.

Have you played with concepts like this before? How many more horsepower would you get from this suburu compared to a stock engine for the car? You can beef up your existing setup to a certain point without doing major surgery with a transplant. I have seen a v-8 in a 911, but that took quite a bit of work to make it fit and run "properly". The car is not designed for things like that and you will run into problems with braking, suspension, etc. You may be able to go faster, but I think you will compromise handling and maybe safety.
Once again, why? Are you just bored and noticed this engine and tranny laying around? Good luck if you try it and please post some pictures, that would be very interesting.

914

I'll be honest, ideally, I want to turn it into an AWD. I've got more than enough subarbu brat, and gl front ends that I could do it. That would be a REAL project. I'm mainly looking to do what you were saying though, take a motor I've got kicking around, and cheeply boost the power in the 914. I was just hoping I'd be able to mate up the vw trans with the subaru motor with very little fuss.

I hardly think modifying your car to fit a subaru motor is the best way to go to

Quote: cheeply boost the power

Sounds like alot of wasted money to me that will do nothing for the value of your car.

Even if the motor and tranny are free its still going to cost money to get the computer morking. The stock subi computer is a bitch to wire from what I've read on the sandrail sites. If you do get it to work please post pics and diagrams. I am toying with the idea of subi power in my baja. If I were in your shoes though I would sell the 2.2 subi motor and put the money into a good rebuild on the stock motor with some performance upgrades. Whatever you do keep us updated.

Having never sat in or worked on a 914 before... how much room is there to work on the engine? Looks like whatever engine you would install has to go in from down below!

A buddy of mine was telling me about the 914/6 after hearing me talk about building a super car of sorts... :D

Dave Roach Thu Jan 20, 2005 11:08 am

I've got the entire ECU, and I've got a quote from a Subi mechanice for $150 to covert porsche wiring to the waterdrooler. I've seen some guys at the track who are running way more power than this little turbo motor, so I think I'll be ok.... might be my last words.....

The more I think though, how cool would that be if I made it all wheel drive. I could pop wheelies backwards and forwards! I'll start posting pics when I start this thing.

Yeah... My home built "super car" is for sure going to have a cage...

I'm curious about the cooling system. Where is a radiator to go on a 914?

70 140 Tue Jan 25, 2005 7:52 am

Fitting a radiator is the least of the problems.

I say go for it that thing will be cool !

yeah that sounds real nice. i have a neighbor who put a chevy 350 in their 914, and they beefed up the chassis and wired the computer and put fender flares with 10 inch wide tires. it's real nice. plus my sister has a stock '73 1.7 litre from those same people 8) . go for that subaru engine and lets hear the stats !

Dave Roach Fri Jan 28, 2005 3:13 pm

Alright, Im gonna do it! Balls to the wall and all four spinnin'
