I have a 63 356 which I need to get rolling. I am temporarily installing a 6V VW motor to get started. I do not want to use the porsche clutch, what kind of throw out bearing do I need in the porsche transmission? Can I simply swap a vw throw out bearing? Anyone else done this? Thanks.

Dude, I had a 6volt VW engine in my Porsche when I purchased her. Not sure if it was a good fit, but it did work. (I pulled out the 36hp engine shortly after) The Porsche clutch will fit on the 6V flywheel if they are both 180mm. Do not mix and match the Porsche T/O bearing and VW clucth. It will never engage 'cause the VW clutch sticks out too far and will be contacting the Porsche bearing. I know that a super beetle (no ring) clutch will work with the Porsche bearing, but it is 200mm and won't fit the 6v flywheel. The Porsche clutch contacts the bearing differently because it is flatter in shape than any VW clutch. To be sure if it will work properly measure the distance from the case mating surface to the part of the pressure plate that will contact the T/O bearing to see if they are close. Right now I have a 2276 with super beetle style clutch and the clutch pedal is super soft. It might not be the correct setup . I never measured it...should have...but it is only "temporary" . I am not sure about longevity of the clutch fingers and T/O bearing (since they do contact different in a VW compared to Porsche). I have used both setups . Both will work...for how long?????

It'll work if you get a 180mm VW pressure plate and solid clutch disk, then pop the collar off the pressure plate. I just did it this weekend, works fine. Then you don't have to fork over $400 to the porsche guys for a clutch kit.
