View original topic: Using an Ipod for a setereo system

Ok, this might be lenghty but here it goes.

So I got an Zen (which is the same thing as an Ipod) for christmas and I have a standard Blaupunkt radio hooked up and it works decently accept I cant play any of my cds on it. So I had this idea that I could hook up my standard house hold charger up to my zen and then get a head phone to rca jack adapter and run my two speakers off of this little Zen while feeding off the power from the charger which could be integrated into the stock wiring system. I was just wondering if this would be physicaly posible. I checked the small charger pack and its rated at 3 volts and I dont think it will suck that much energy. I already have the two speakers in the car now hooked up to my stock radio and just spliced the two wires to the two and figure I can just splie into them again.

there is a radio transmitter for the ipod. you dont have to plug it in to your radio at all. you plug the ipod into the device and it plays on one of four radio stations that you can select. i'm sure they have them for other MP3 players as well because i have seen them for cell phones, laptops, cd players, etc. i'll see if i can find one online for you.

are some cheaper alternatives....

they are called fm tranismitters...and you can get one at just about any electronics store.

In addition to the FM transmitter alternative you can get a device which plugs to the back of the radio where the antenna plugs to. The antenna then plugs to that device and then the IPOD via rca plugs to that device. It sounds complicated but it is not. Here is the link:

how often do you listen to the radio? if you're like me, the only time i want the radio is for traffic info and for that my saphire1 works awesome (and is original) -- plus, who wants to steal that? ever had a radio ripped from a bug dash? i have -- never again.

when i want to listen to music, i use my ipod... hooked to an amp under the rear speaker deck with a y-cable (headphone>>rca). the ipod plays for hours, so there's not a charging issue, but there are a number of car chargers out there should you want one. the ipod rests comfortably in the passenger seat -- i'd rather not have a hard-installed bracket, but again, they're out there.

best part is, you cant tell that there's any sound system from outside the car (rear speakers are under thin carpet -- just a solid shelf). this setup has worked well in many of my older cars... before the ipod, it was a cd-walkman, before cds, it was a tape-walkman.
