My question is, I need to have locking door handles on driver and passenger side (i have been a victim of theft before) . Im picking up my new 1956 oval next weekend :D and I will have to make the passenger side lock also before I can drive it. I also plan on putting a steering wheel disconect and a shift lock and an ignition cut off of some sort. what modifications do I have to do to make the install a locking passenger side door handle. also, do they still make shift locks? I saw a couple in the classifieds for original shift locks for ovals but as long as it locks the shifter in place, im happy. Do these shift locks work with the scat drag fast shifter? I have already searched previous posts and did not find any information on the door locks. oh, and if you have pictures, that would definately help. i thought about switching to later doors just so i can get a locking set but would like to keep it original. thanks

Ok, the stock passenger door handle may not have an outside key lock, but it is lockable from the inside of the vehicle. You just pull the inner handle rearward, and viola, locked door! But if you're more concerned in locking/unlocking from the outside, you'll need to purchase a second driver side door handle. Yes, they are interchangeable and no need for modification to install.

A shifter lock is still available from a number of VW shops including BFY & Wolfsburg West. These cost in the neighborhood of about $60, which includes a pair of keys. This type of lock will only work with the oem VW shifter, not aftermarket like the Scat version you inquired about. If you want/need an aftermarket shifter with a built-in lock assembly, Gene Berg Ent has them for $450+

I don't think that will work. If you have a left locking handle on the right door and you lock the mechanism from the inside, you are stuck. Nothing you do on the outside handle will unlock it. It must be unlocked from the inside.
If you leave it unlocked on the inside, you could lock it from the outside, but if you want it open, you would then have to get out and walk around, plug the key in and unlock it. This is one of the reasons they changed the handles/door mechanism.
For security, all you need is a non-locking handle on the passenger side and remember to lock it on the inside.

Yes, it'll work. But you'll also have the problem you stated above. Another remedy would be to just never lock it from the inside, only lock it from the outside.

I need to remember that...I've made a few mistakes. I don't have a key to my door handles, so I have to leave it unlocked everywhere.

actually, i would rather have the door lock from the outside then the inside. it didnt keep the guy i knew from stealing my 62 ragtop. so do you just install the handle as you would normally? i saw a guy at the last sacramento bug o rama that was matching locks and handles, etc. hmm.. i wonder how much he charges to match the two door handles and the rear T handle? How theft resistant would the berg shifters be? i guess i will settle on a stock shift lock for the time being and then upgrade my shifter to the gene berg later. oh yeah, by the way, l227 your girl in your avatar is quite attractive  (did i just say that?). i saw another post from you in another question about how she is a model  . i will have to look into the gene berg shifters, maybe i can find one at the next bug o rama or next show near sacramento for a good price. thanks for the help, now to come up with a ignition kill switch of some sort. i had a fuel pump cut off switch in my old 2000 acura integra gs-r that stopped them from stealing it when they tried.

Yes, you'd install the other locking handle just as you would normally.

Search the classifieds for Gabriel in Texas. He's the man when it comes to rekeying all your lock cylinder to match. Just be sure you have all the same tumblers. For your car, it should be a SG-code.

The Berg locking shifter is just as good as the VW shift lock ($69), just made a little more stout.

For a cheap but very effective kill switch, just mount a hidden switch anywhere of your choosing. The switch should be wired inline with the coil wire coming from the ignition switch. When you leave the car, flip the switch and the car won't start. Add the shift lock, and the would-be theif won't be able to push the car away either.

I have LoJack. After I had a bus stolen, I figured it was cheap. Go ahead steal my ride------Irvine cops shoot first and ask questions later. :D

VW's are easy to get into, locked or not . If they want it ,they are going to take it!!
Get a good alarm and Good insurance(set the value of the car up front and have it insured for that amount)
have as many deturants as possable(ignition cut off, the club, shifter lock)
Im afraid to take my bug anywhere that i will have to park it ,and leave it !
I had my truck stolen in front of my work
with drivers and customers coming in and out every couple of minutes
when i got it back. It had been in a high speed chase
over the spike strips.wore the front suspension down to coil springs
the cops had to hit it from the side to spin him out, blew the trany,3 of the 4 wheels were shot
I wish i had done a couple of things to make it harder for them!

I park my bug right in front of the window
so i can watch it all day!!!

radrob Tue Jan 25, 2005 10:44 pm

Also when the cop took the report
he said if i didnt get it back in a couple of days that
my chances of getting it back in the same shape wernt as good
He said lojack and onstar are the best chance you will have of getting it back!!

hey, thanks for all your help and information. I asked my insurance if lo-jack would lower my insurance, it only dropped it by 30 a year. I also got good news. I won my claim against the city of phoenix regarding my 62 bug body that they released back to the suspect without my notification. The suspect was or is Michael Parini, he lives in phoenix off of 27th drive. I actually went back out there in august after they released my car parts back to him and he tried to say that he sold it and was no longer in vw's. guess what was in his driveway when i went by. a ragtop (same color canvas rag and it was also incorrectly installed like i had it in, my fenders etc. it was rattle canned a yellow color. i called the detective who was handling my case out and i had 3 books, 12 magazines, and 30 pictures of my 62 rag showing damage that was visible from standing in front of it and differences in suspension, engine, body, etc. the suspect even hand a license plate on it to a 1960s convertable and the pan was an irs, balljoint pan. After all that B.S. I went through, I didnt get it back. :( Finally, after 2 years, I feel at ease that some justice was served. I'm getting 1700 from that, so that will pay for the gene berg shifter, steering wheel disconnect and any other modifications. I forgot what lo jack runs for now a days. but thanks for all your help. Now I need to locate a 6 bolt hub so I will be able to bolt up my bride racing steering wheel to the quick disconnect.

Are you saying your car was stolen and they gave your car back to the thief (after an arrest?)?
If its your car, just take it. Have a few really big friends with you.

gospeedgo1 Thu Jan 27, 2005 6:08 pm

yeah, thats what phoenix pd did. this guy has a history of forgery and drug use. he lives off of glendale ave and 27th ave or drive, i dont remember. to tell you the truth, i was seriously debating through a molotov cocktail at the car when it was at his house the 2nd time and the detective tried to tell me the car wasnt mine. im a textbook taurus, make me mad and i will make you regret it. this guy lied to the detective (a.j. eastin) 3 times when i first found the car. then the 2nd time when i found it in front of his house again after it had been released, he lied to the new detective in charge of my case (detective gray). hey, if you happen to get your car stolen in phoenix, make sure that detective gray of the auto theft detail never gets to be in charge of your case. while i was waiting for regular clothed cops to show, i was talking to him about other cases. this guy does not do his work, he was telling me about guys that had there acuras and hondas stolen and how they would do all the searching and find the car and or parts and then call him and he would then have the parts impounded. he really does not know anything about cars, vws, acuras, nothing. i was surprised that i knew a whole lot more about cars then him. oh well, i dont think i would have taken getting my car back very well either, because when i first found it before the cops came, i saw 2 other bugs with my rims, tires, interior in them. it made me so sick, i wanted to puke. i still have the suspects information, name, address, phone, everything. a suggestion, dont buy from michael parini. he admitted working at a vw chop shop 2 blocks from his house. at least the 1700 will buy some things towards security. so how much is lo jack running for to be installed in a bug. is there a monthly fee?

53 0val Thu Jan 27, 2005 6:28 pm

When I had my LoJack installed it was about $500. There is no monthly fee. I have it set up so it calls my cell phone if the car is moved or broken into. I think that was about $100 extra. This was done 5 years ago, so the price may have gone up. Try this site for information. http://www.lojack.com/find-a-dealer/dealerlocator.cfm?engine=overture!2604&keyword=lojack

I guess the moral of the story is to have your major parts marked with your DL, record your engine number, and take lots of pictures.

If it were me, I would have just taken my car back, and taken all the other cars with my parts on them. Then remove my parts from the other cars and dump the remains. Then contact the guy's insurance co and anonymously inform them that the guy is going to do a fraudulent claim.

well, thanks for the advice. i just picked up my new 1956 oval. gotta get rid of my 1.8t gti now, man that engine sucks. thanks again. now i will just wait for my settlement from phoenix and that will pay for all my security stuff.
