The main question is what motor will you be using? 1966 and earlier cars were 6 volt with smaller flywheels and thus slightly smaller transmission bell housings. If you have a motor made in or after 1967 this would be a slight problem. The bellhousing will have to be clearanced to fit the later motor. However, if you want to put in a transmission from 1967, 68, 69 etc... you shouldnt have any problem. a 1968 tranny would work perfectly fine in your '67 Keep in mind the major dividing point.. '68/'69. The swing axle transmission was used on all cars up to 1968 (all cars with manual transaxles that is..) 1969 on used the so called 'IRS' doulbe jointed axle transmission. Basically, with some slight modification, any year will work in your car, but when in doubt, use the original part that came with the car. It makes it easier when working on it. Especially if you have a manual for your car (1967) but then have to have a 1974 manual for your tranny and a 1963 manual for your motor. Thats 3 books! Hope this helps.

How do I measure, or what are the measurments for the bellhousings so I can look at my transmission. My transmission came with 67 long axles from the last owner (used) but I cant remember if he said it was a 67 car. The car is 12 volt now with a 1600cc Dp motor....

The 1967 transmission differs from earlier transmissions in that it also has a reverse light switch built into the case.

Since your car is already 12v, your bellhousing is already opened up to accept the larger 200mm flywheel.

rear axles and axle tubes are longer than the 66 and earlier also... something to consider for sure.

69 is IRS/double joint 67/68 is 4.12 ring and pinion 66back to 61 is 4.37 ring and pinion. they are swingaxle transaxle(single joint irs) you can use the 61-66 6volt by grinding out bell housing to accept your 200 mm flywheel change the axle tubes on type 3 swingaxle if you cant find beetle 67/68 trans.
