A: Porsche guys.
What I know, I mean really know, about Porsches wouldn't fill a cavity. Been offered what appears to be a helluva deal on a '77 930 Turbo Carrera. This is basically my dream car since I had hairs downstairs. Problem (perhaps a plus really) is that the motor is blown. Not hot rodded, but rather, a barn car (very low miles), loaded up with fluid and sat with the motor rusting inside for who knows how many years. Rebuilding runs between $6k-$8k. Other than that, the car is mint (fuchs, leather that looks like its never seen a butt, etc.). So you Prosche guys (and gals), what would one expect to pay for such a monster? I'm sitting on pins and needles. Thanks. |

| Can't we all just be air cooled people? I hope I never grow up that much. I'll be happy right in the middle. I doubt the engine will be the only financial drain. I would like to go through everything depending on how long it's been sitting. Will you do your own work or do you have a line on a mechanic? If you have anyone to lean on to check the car out with you I would recomend that. I love the 930! Beautiful car! I went for a ride in one when I was... 12(?) and that was the first turbo I had ever felt(I think I became a man that day). I wish I could help, I'll just drool along side with ya. Good luck! |

| Got both (wrenches and a good mechanic). Would have to do the work myself. I have to do everything myself. If I could find a reliable home surgery book, I'd do that too (plastic surgery as I'm pretty ugly and could use an upgrade). I'm thinking I'm going to go back with an even lower offer. Even on the cheap, its a lot of money to have sitting in my driveway while I slowly build the engine (just a lowly government employee, so it might take years to financially be able to build the motor). If they decline, then so be it, I guess. Must be firm. Would be nice to have my '79 super vert as a daily driver and a 930 for those days when I'm concerned about my hairline. |

Oooh, love the 930s. Motormeister will build you a longblock for about $3500 and you sound like you can wrench the rest yourself. You'll have near that in machining, parts and one-use tools needed for a 911 anyway :)
Worth whatever you think you can get it for. Guy in town here in BFE, Indiana has a late 70's 930 that has been sitting in his drive for at least 4 years. Hasn't moved an inch. I stop and talk to him every once in a while and he won't take any less than $10K so the car is gonna sit there and rot unfortunately.
Oh yeah, throw away that K26 turbo and find a decent Garret... |

Maybe the question show be...."Whats better than a VW or a Porsche owner?"
Answer - A VW/Porsche owner!
Bro, you need to take this one to Pelican Parts website and put up a post...thats where all of the 911 experts are hiding. Even if you cant afford to rebuild the car right away, someone on there will be willing to take her off your hands for nice profit on your part. I know the early turbo 911's are desirable cars with not very many made(more so than the 1980's turbos). A general rebuild for a 911 is $5-7k....i'd expect a turbo to be little more. |

| Porsches are like boats- Don't buy one, have friends that own them. I wrench on a friends 356 and Beck spyder and they are NICE cars. I HAVE to drive them on occasion to make sure they are running right. Tough job. However, for the rebuild cost of one engine, you could own a fast show VW. Of course, if I had the means I wouldn't kick one out of the garage... |
