Hi ,
I am a new to the samba and aircooleds, and was wondering how difficult it would be and what I should consider when putting a 1600cc into a 56 oval? The reason is because the oval dosen't come with a motor it just has a tranny in it and i can obtain a 1600. will it work easily? what do I need? cutting?. all advice greatly appreciated :o

If the trans thats in it now isnt the original split case tranny, worst case is you will have to clearance the bell housing for the 12 volt flywheel but remember, putting a dual port motor in an oval compartment is a tight fit but you shouldnt have to cut anything. Is the 1600 single or dual port?

you'll have to trim the front breast plate tin, other than that,it will work.
does it have the original trans?if so you will have to clearance the bellhousing for the motor to fit,or you can use a 180mm flywheel

I would take heater boxes off first!!
Its a tight fit! If the paint is nice i would also take off the generator also!
See if where the 4 mounting bolts have been ground down already.
If not thats where you have to grind.
Actualy i would use a file!
the trany is made of magnesium!
If you hit steel while your grinding and ignite some magnesium powder!
Once it starts burning! You cant stop it! It even burns under water!
A friend of mine lost his car that way!!
Nothing you can do!!

Fire extinguishers can put heavy metals fires out, but only one specific type. A Class D? DON'T USE WATER!

You will have to use a 1966 Karmann Ghia flywheel, unless you convert the system over to twelve Volts. Any other flywheel has 109 teeth, which will not mesh with the six Volt starter teeth. You must use a 130 tooth flywheel, and since the crankshaft is sized for a normal 12 Volt flywheel hub, you can only use a standard 12 Volt flywheel, or the Ghia flywheel, which has the hub of a 12 Volt, but the tooth arrangement of a six Volt.
I'm sure someone here can come up with a part number, maybe even a Ghia flywheel.

Rimco stocks them. They will know what you want.
