The website is fixed!! We buy cores form salvage yards, auctions, and the general public. I guess I should say cores for rebuilding. I'm just looking for a market to save some from scrap. If they are too far gone then they will be shredded and return to life as something else.

Cores are getting harder to find and if I can save some it will be good for our hobby.

The Common Gear Antique Volkswagen Society is happy to announce this year�s �Heroes of Antique Volkswagening� honorees. We are very pleased to recognize this year two people who truly epitomize the spirit of �selfless behind-the-scenes contributions and accomplishments� within the old-VW hobby.

The �Heroes� award program was originated in 1999 to help recognize those people within the antique Volkswagen hobby world who have especially given of themselves to help other hobbyists, often with little to no personal gain or attention. The inaugural recipient in �99 was talented Michigan-based antique VW restorer Dave Crompton. There were two recipients for Y2K: Pennsylvania�s tireless antique VW hobby advocate Jim Siegfried, and New Hampshire�s intrepid antique VW road warrior Bill Collins. The three 2001 honorees were California�s �world class� enthusiast/author/entrepreneur Rich Kimball, Connecticut�s unsung long-time workhorse event organizer Chuck Pisconski, and Missouri's super-enthusiastic event participant/organizer/�do-er� Bill Bowman. Our two honorees for 2002 were Michigan�s �positive guiding light� Bob Case, and California�s amazing Golden Gate Chapter (VVWCA) head man Rick Spohn. In 2003 we gave a much-deserved spotlight to that long-unsung, low-key, behind-the-scenes �doer,� Nebraska�s Matt Joy. 2004 saw recognition of Wisconsin-based master-restorer of drivable classic VWs Connie Holcomb, and California�s long-time vintage VW hobby enthusiast/organizer/promoter Jan Peters. In 2005 the �Heroes� spotlight shone on MA resident and dedicated vintage VW hobby leader Peter Cook, and Iowa�s �ironman� vintage VW behind-the-scenes-doer-of-all-things Howard Query. In 2006, the �First Family of Air-Cooled VW Performance,� the groundbreaking and truly legendary Berg Family, from California, were most deservedly honored. In 2007, our honorees were Arizona�s �godfather� of VW toy, memorabilia, and goodwill Jerry Jess, and VW restoration parts pioneer Tony Moore of CA�s Wolfsburg West. For 2008, the extraordinary (and extraordinarily loved) couple from California, Erich and Wendy Kircher were recognized for their contributions to the hobby and to humanity. In 2009, the AZ-based internet impresario Everett Barnes of �TheSamba� fame was honored for his significant contributions to advancing the state of the (old VW hobby) art. In 2010, �The Godfather of the Antique VW Hobby,� Terry Shuler from PA was honored with well-deserved �Hero� recognition. In 2011, the CVA�s Jeremy Clayton was recognized for his tireless decade of contributions to the Northeastern old-VW hobby. And in 2012, CA-based businessman/enthusiast Scott Dempster, and the �mega-enthusiast duo� Mark Merrill and Ray Schubert, also from CA, were recognized for all their generous and significant contributions to the hobby.

This year�s �Heroes� honorees are California�s Brian O�Kelly, and Illinois� Tom Janiszewski. Brian O�Kelly has �done it all� on the hobby scene, from club organizing activities at all levels, to raising enormous amounts of money for worthy charities via car raffles, and of course old car restoration�and he continues to contribute in countless unseen ways, such as web site design and maintenance for other hobby organizations. Tom Janiszewski has been a contributor to the hobby on both local and national levels for many years, with writing, illustrating, and �general assistance� wherever he can, to help organizations and events run smoothly. He is uniquely able to be involved and interested in, and contribute to the worlds of both modern and antique VW enthusiasm. Both men are undoubtedly �most valuable players� for the many VW hobby organizations that they help out with their creativity, energy, and enthusiasm.

The official public announcement of this year�s honorees, as it has always been, will coincide with Michigan Vintage Volkswagen Club�s �26th Annual Vintage Volkswagen Festival,� May 19th, 2013, at Ypsilanti, MI. The MVVC Festival has traditionally been the venue for the announcement of the annual �Heroes� honorees, ever since noted MI-based restorer Dave Crompton received the inaugural honor in a ceremonial presentation at the 1999 event. The Common Gear Antique Volkswagen Society wishes to thank all those who participated in this year�s �Heroes� award process, including this year�s esteemed nominators: Rick Spohn, Tom Baxstresser, Bill Bowman, and Gary Hanson. Just the other day a guy commented after hearing mine's a '63, "oh, it's 50 this year!". Bummed that I missed the birthday, however, as my car is an early '63 model. Glad you are not too late for your turkis bug's 50th!

Well it's a cool idea but cases and heads comming in for scrap? Is it the stuff that a shop couldn't machine? That's the stuff I bring in for scrap. If it came out of someone's basement and was carefully brought to you instead of thrown in the pile, that's different.

I've tried repeatedly to register and am having no luck at all. Fill out the whole form and hit "save" and moments later, it's all just blank again. Nice idea, but something ain't right.

I don't really approve of this handout type of thing. I saved up all the money I could and always accepted help when it was offered, but asking for handouts is just pathetic in my book. I didn't have any actual job when I was fixing up my bus, but somehow I managed to build it myself, although my parents did help me out somewhat. I would look for a part time job if I was you.

We drove my son's '67 square 600 miles to buy my '69 square and drove them Both home without any major problems! You can rent a tow dolly from U Haul if you break down or would rather tow it home?

The biggest difference is that your more modern car is designed to give up its life to protect yours.

That wasn't a big part of the design process when your bus was built.

Thanks for the replies. I am Sorry about our website not working. Should be getting Fixed soon. I was unaware it was down until yesterday after reading your replies. Anyways, We are located in Gray Court, SC and Able to ship anywhere in the US.

I'm able to edit my profile. Did you originally sign up for this site? I know Chris had imported info from the AIRS list and the people of the AIRS list were not happy about that so he pulled that info off. Maybe he missed yours?

I have emailed Chris and have gotten responses unlike any other site like this.

Nice idea, but when is this actually going to do anything? Right now, I can't even edit my profile. Beyond that, it appears that there is no content. What are we registering for? What indication is there that this isn't some sort of ploy or scam? How about fulfilling the site's promise? You would most likely get the volume of applicants that you desire if that were the case...

I'll admit, the AIRS list is full of bad or outdated information, but it's still better than promises. At least it's something.

Sorry about the caustic nature of this post, but c'mon... It's a great idea, just follow through.

This event was back 10 years ago I'd guess. When you couldn't even carry a lighter on a plane. Old man,,,,,, and I mean old man gets up there and they start hassling him about this taped up circle thing. I hear him go on that his great grandson had been saving up paper route money for whatever the said thing was.
they didn't care. they told him he could walk about 9 miles down the concourse to some place that will ship it for him but he couldn't do that, because his wife was sick at home and he couldn't miss his flight.
In the end, before I could, a guy said "give me that and your address, I'll get it shipped home for you". the old guy bout' had tears in his eyes.

In the end, it was three table saw blades that he'd been given for Christmas. I knew if those pesky terrorists could figure out how to get a tablesaw on board, they'd use it to take down a plane.

I just saw it and was none too impressed. It's lack of bay window coverage other than calling them 'fat chicks' irked me a little. Also there was way too much hippy stuff imho. They didn't really cover the fact that buses appeal to tinkerers and technophiles like myself as much or more so than hippies.

If the total bill adds to more than 50%, their adjuster may declare your beloved bug a complete loss in order to pay that kind of money. If you go that route, ask if you can buy the car back. It will cost you next to nothing, the downside, a Salvage Title.

I posted in the Bay forum last week about the baseball size hail we had which exploded the rear window of my 2005 Chevy and the big dents it left in the hood, top and trunk.

My '78 bus was parked right next to the Chevy, lost no glass and didn't even have any dents in the roof or anywhere else.

Coincidence? I think not.

With him being at fault you kinda have him by the shorthairs there. Not really his choice on how much the vehicle is worth or what they should do with it. Your ins co has declared that your car is worth 6k to replace, and that's what Alfa has to work with. Whatever you do, make sure they source out original parts and make them buy german quality panels and whatnot. The nice part about not being at fault is the ball's in your court, and you decide what you want done, not the other ins co. They're taking blame for their driver and now they've got to pay for it.

Hey,
Was hit in the back today and guy that did it has insurance with Alfa. The damage didn't look bad at first, but after getting it home I can see that both fenders, both rear 1/4 panels, the apron and the engine lid have damage. The bumper is also toast. There is a massive oil spill and it looks like there could be a crack in the block or heads where the tail pipes were shoved into the engine. Question: what might I expect a company like Alfa to do and what is my best strategy? I'm sure on their books the car is worth 1-2K. I have it insured with State Farm for 6K comprehensive. TIA.

I agree that the AIRS list should be on thee most central, air-cooled site in the world. It just makes sense. AND an APP is an inspired idea!

It's a shame it's acting as wonky as a lemon bus. The AIRS list was the inspiration for our documentary, Circle the Wagen, (here comes the plug), which is having it's world premiere in Albuquerque on June 9th, at the Albuquerque Film & Media Experience.

Check out the trailer, it mentions the AIRS list. I mention it every time I talk about the film(which is nearly daily); people are fascinated about it.
