I read your post and have to say: there's a reason you're questioning this car. The car has been wrecked in the past, airbags gone off and you have no other real history on the car. You don't know who replaced the bags, who repaired any wiring or how well they repaired it, who repaired the body structurally and how well they did it. There's too many questions here.
Sure, it's a nice new VW and it's a TDI and it will probably go forever and ever... but every time you pull into your driveway or the place where you work and the chassis flexes just a little bit and you hear that "pop pop pop" of the 1 or 2 broken spot welds they didn't repair correctly: you'll kick yourself.

You have a bad gut feeling about this deal because something about it just doesn't seem right to you. Why get married if you're not crazy about the girl?

Test the fuel pump. CIS requires a minimum fuel pressure; if the fuel pump is failing or already dead, you'll have issues. Also verify that the fuel pump is receiving proper voltage. Once the fuel pump is operating properly, pull the injectors and test each one to verify their spray pattern and quantity.

Replace all of the rubber vacuum line connections.

Rather than swapping out the fuel distributor, clean the old one up first: http://www.vintagewatercooleds.com/tech/Techtips/ATStechnotes/CISMAF/cismaf.htm .

It doesn't matter now, but if the car is in the Southwest you'll want to install an air filter at some point between now and when the car is back to being driven.

As someone else said, use a wrench to see if you can turn the engine by hand. Pull the plugs to see what kind of shape they're in; and check for spark. Verify the timing: http://www.cabby-info.com/Files/AdjustingTheTiming.pdf .

One more thing: the car doesn't have points (unless someone modified the ignition system). The car came from the factory with an electronic, breakerless transistorized ignition system with vacuum advance.

I also would like to know if my fuel pump is in the tank. I've been all over the back of the car and have not found anything that looks like a pump.

Any clues?

I put new CV joints in it. That's the most recent maintenance that's been done.

Or if it wet with gas.

How old is the gas in the tank?

Do you have a Bentley work shop manual handy?

I might can save you money on parts and tools for these cars....

Actually, the problem came after I went to town and put gas in the car. It was in the red a little so I put eight or so gallons of premium in it.

Ha! I don't have a Bentley manual yet, but I am planning on it. I have one for all my other VW's.

Dealer free maintainance is a joke. All the dealers around here used used dino oil since they had to pay for it. It was a long time before VOA made any attempt put a stop to it. All the customers who were smart enough to realize there was no such thing as free and had use change thier oil every 5000 miles sooner than the dealer reccomended interval with Kendall, Redline, Royal Purple or Amsoil full synthetic had no sludge problems.

Hey thanks - I just wanted to add a little handling zip to the TDI - I messed around a little with my old 1986 Jetta GLI but don't know much about the A4 chasis - I didn't think of the brake upgrade from the VR6 model - makes sense!!!

BTW - are you from Lincoln, Nebraska? My wife is from there!

"The brakes on VW TDI and gasoline VW with the 2.0L engine are part of the spindle (steering knuckle/hub assembly) and can't be separated. To upgrade to larger brake rotors or calipers, you must first replace the spindle which includes larger, removable brake carriers, and then you can mix/match the larger rotors/calipers/carriers. Your original "FSIII" front brake calipers on the TDI cannot be reused in the larger brake kits (they were also used on the 2.0L engine cars). The caliper is physically smaller, does not have a removable carrier, and uses a small brake pad. Your front conversion must use the "FN3" used on all 1.8T/VR6 cars which includes any special edition 337/20th anniversary, GLI, GTI (except the golf R32 which uses a 2 piston caliper). If you already have a 1.8T/VR6, you just need to change the rotor and carrier."

Really? I have seen dozens of dealer maintained, synthetic oil only cars come back with sludge. This problem was more of a turbo issue and the lack of sufficient cooling. The turbo cooks the oil and it all comes to rest in the head.
