I'd assume the only person interested in a bastard case would be the owner of a bus that came originally with one

Nope, the pieces are not magnetic and quite light in weight. any ideas?

The bearings are original size so I don't think the case was opened when the pistons and cylinders were changed at some point.

I think I will just store the case for now. I guess the crank and rods and trash now. And keeping and reusing the P&C is not recommended either is it?

One of the heads has cracks between the valves for sure.

Sure didn't win with the engine!

drill out and tap all oil passages and clean them thoroughly before doing anything with that block, seem like it has seen some things in its life...

But I've always thought it sure was nice of the aftermarket to make all those different sizes of P/Cs... not everyone gets the variety of choices we have as regards engine size and performance level.

Not to mention prices---we really are lucky.

Sounds like you are on the right track, most builders aim for 40 thou deck or just a little more, you should be able to find a set of 80 thou spacers, the push rods look identical to my Bugpack chromoly ones, set the valve clearance to a loose zero, do a search on it, its well covered in this forum

I have never had much luck honing and doing new rings, They always burned a little oil when I tried that. But a new set of 4 pistons and 4 cylinders with new rings is only about $150.00. Example:
Texas Air Cooled has them,
so does Air Cooled has Thick Walls,
You may need some carburetor fine tuning. Check your points and spark plug gaps. Make sure valve lash is set properly.

Your return line should be as large or larger than the supply line.
If you return side is restricted it will "back up" the regulator and cause trouble tuning your map.
Anything from the regulator to the tank needs to be as free as possible.
So imagine this, your pump supplies X amount of fuel(call it ten) but your engine only uses .5 at idle or cruize, the remainder of fuel has to make its way back to the tank as easily as possible. If your return line is comprimized you will have uncontrollable fuel pressure at low speeds. and if you have a 5/16 feed and a 5mm(stock tube) return you can see where this is a problem.
If you only run one additional line, I would use the original for pressure and the 5/16 for return. However I would just run two lines. Hope this helps

The engine did have 1641cc pistons and cylinders. Perhaps it is fragments of the previous set that failed and the engine was rebuilt without cracking the case. The numbers on the crank bearing half are 1 07 025 BC 290. I will try and see if these indicate a rebuild at some stage?
The vw trans is extremely simple, anyone with any mechanical aptitude can understand how it works.
The hard part about vw trans is knowing what parts work with what parts, there is no publishing about this.Expirience is key
Your question is extremely vague. You ask how the shifter moves the gears around. Quite simply it does not with the exeption of reverse. The shifter moves operating sleeves(commenly referd to as sliders) that engage the particular gear. Remember "constant mesh" means that both parts of first are always together, as is 2-4. The only gear that is not constant is reverse, hence no syncronizer ring

I'll try to make this as short as possible...

I bought a car a while back with this motor:
2276 in AS41 case
Scat forged crank
Scat rods w/ ARP bolts
FK8 with Scat 1.4 rockers
CB 044 Super Mag Plus heads, 42x37, dual springs, hand ported
dual 48 IDFs
and I just replaced the exhaust it had with a 1-5/8" A1 Sidewinder

So, based on the parts, it should be pretty quick. It has pretty good low RPM torque, throttle response, and drivability, but it just doesn't want to pull once it transitions onto the main jets. I've posted about this a couple of times in the past few weeks so some of you may have seen those posts.

A couple days ago I pulled the carbs and was shocked to find 135 main jets, so I ordered a set of 165 mains which are on the way. Today I decided to go ahead and pull the motor and see if I could uncover anything else that might be contributing to my lack of power.

Got the motor on the bench and pulled the valve covers. My rocker arm side play ranged from .005" to .024"... in fact, four of the eight rockers had over .020" clearance. So I guess that explains why it has more valvetrain noise than normal. So I'll order up a some shims. I believe for my Scat 1.4 rockers I need to order Scat brand shims, correct? There are no other options on shims?

Then I pulled a head to check deck. The piston is .030" under the top of cylinder, PLUS there is a .060" copper head gasket! So the deck is a whopping .090"?! There is a .066" shim between the case and cylinder. The heads do not have any step, the squish area is flat. I don't have the kit to check the head chamber CCs, so I'm going to see if I can find one at a local shop tomorrow so I can determine what the CR is.

QUESTION #1: I guess there are a couple different ways to achieve a proper deck clearance by juggling sizes of base shim and head gasket. However, I'm thinking the best thing to do is to throw the copper head gaskets in the trash, and replace my current .066" cylinder shims with .080" shims. That would give me a .044" deck. Am I correct that this way (with no head gasket) is the way to go?

QUESTION #2: I don't see .080" cylinder shims. Is there any reason why I can use a pair of .040" shims?

QUESTION #3: Can someone I.D. my pushrods from the super high-quality iPhone photo below? They are black, and a magnet sticks to them (not just the ends, the whole thing).

QUESTION #4 Since the pushrods are not aluminum then I can adjust them tighter than the usual .006" that you'd use with aluminum pushrods? What is a good, safe cold clearance? Is .003" okay?

FYI, from 1987 - 1996 I worked at a German/Japanese shop, during that time I rebuilt a lot of VW & Porsche engines. However, they were always stock rebuilds (we didn't do high performance stuff) and then in 1996 I went to work at a Honda dealer where I've been ever since. So I know my way around a VW engine... but as far as a modified VW engine goes, this is a first for me, so I just wanted to ask these questions before I do something stupid. Thanks in advance for any help.
Yep all the lifters are intact.

This is the first bearing towards the flywheel (main bearing?) Shouldn't there be a dowel? Does that indicate a spun main too?

Cheers!

Looks like cast , reminds me of lifters. Just a guess...

I recently purchased a complete 1974 1660dp as a rebuild project.

Once I got it home I found water in the case. I don't think this has hurt anything.

Here are the photos of the case, along with the very loose rod. What I can't work out is where the metal pieces on the rag came from? I don't see any damage in the case.

Hopefully I can salvage the case at least!

1/2 side of case:
Scrape in the case from the loose rod?

So with all this anticipation and talk, I think I am gonna build a lil 1776. Here's what I am thinking...stock crank, 8 doweled, stock rods, lightened flywheel, FK42 cam, CB 1.25 rockers, (.480 ish lift), stock ported (new chinese casting) heads flycut to 47-49cc, and 40 idfs with 32 vents.

Should pull like a mutha down low, be over by 5500 and a great driver. Simple, easy, and cheap. No crazy rod sizes, no crazy shims, or 1800 post threads. Can it be done? A 1776? Is it still possible?? Opinions??

hello folks! i am in the middle of a mexi beetle FI swap in a 71 super. my question is, would the stock (in the tunnel) fuel line be enough to work with the FI? i had to run a return line, and all the lines on the donor car were about 5/16 (feed and return)

am i asking for trouble? fuel starvation, burnt up pump? i already ran the return, and i have a feeling i know what you guys are going to say. fwiw, it's a stock 1600 with the mexi injection
I'm starting rocker geometry and got a question for you guys . The image above is of the new 043 Scat heads and rocker assembly . Once I seated the assembly down on the head pedestal I immediately saw how close the rocker shaft/bolt came to hitting the valve cover surface in the area pictured . It's so close I can only get a .005 feeler gauge in it . Is this normal ? May be a coincidence but the rocker on that side is off quite a bit and only has one shim on either side , All the rest are very close to center of valve stem .

Jbbugs , I'm expecting to have to stretch some metal to get it in , Don't really want to think about that at the moment .

The pictures show the shifter being in first gear and physically moving the gears around to mesh. How is this done on the Beetle?? Anyone have any pictures? Or visual aids?

I don't believe I have ever had it at WOT. I hardly ever have the 2nd barrel open. It has plenty of power with the 1st one. It will pull the wheels off of the ground without dumping the clutch on flat ground with only using the 1st barrel. There is absolutely NO flat spot or hesitation because of the 009 or the carb. I have had it up to 85 mph and still accelerating (I ran out of road lol) at only 3000 rpm (it's got 36 inch rear tires). So I just got the oil pump out of this 1776 I picked up and the end of the cam is flat and has "285" stamped on it. I saw that it was a reduced base circle VW forging when I got the cylinders slid off, but I really have no idea what this cam would behave like. Does anyone have any insight as to what it might be?

It's in a 1776 that had a 34pict3 when the previous owner got it in his bus and it had 40x32 heads on it with single springs and stock pushrods... I'm putting it in a '63 bug that I plan to drive halfway across the country...

I'm headed back out to split the case now!

The problem you are experiencing is called standoff, caused by pulses from the valve closing traveling back up the intake tract. I suspect your mismatched valves with small ports is making this worse than usual.

You certainly should fit those inner springs and better pushrods, but adding 1.25s will probably make your standoff worse without improving performance. But change those pushrods and fit the extra springs before something breaks - it will be even worse to have the wife standing over saying "I told you so."

There certainly have been quality 009s over the years - I'm not sure if any of the current crop qualify?

I just don't believe the 009 is a good match for the progressive and a mild engine. Any distributor on a modified engine tends to be a compromise and if the max advance ends up retarded from optimum or if the mixture is changed to make it work it can hurt max HP.

The main problem with the OPs question is we don't know a lot of detail about the engine and what figure to quote. On a dyno at WOT he probably has close to or a little more than stock HP, but it may well drive a lot better and produce more where he wants it - we actually spend very little time at WOT at the rpm of peak HP in the real world.
It doesn't. People just love to bash the 009

Distributors don't increase or decrease max horse power. They do alter the HP from idle to full advance due to the curve.

Any distributor that has worn or poor quality bushings and provide unstable advance and dwell. And that will hurt horse power.

A cheap 009 will not give the same performance as a high quality 009. But does a high quality 009 exist?

A few years ago, I used fasteners called "well nuts".
They are a threaded insert, bonded to a rubber sleeve, which expands when the bolt is tightened..... like this:
http://fasteners.oemfast.com/viewitems/pop-well-nuts/pop-well-nut-threaded-inserts

They worked very well to secure fuel lines and non-stock spark plug wire clips to the fan housing.

The only downside is that in time, the rubber sleeve will retain its expanded shape, and the well nut must be destroyed and replaced if you intend to completely remove it.
Good luck, Mondshine

Stock heads and valves, the minimal increase in displacement, the ignition ads nothing and the carb helps a little.
I'll be a bit more optimistic, 65hp.

So

All the way back to the crank. the thrust bearing and the small end bearing where almost welded to the crank. There is no way thats oil starvation as it was run for about 20sec in 5 shortish bursts just on the starter and 3 seconds under its own steam. Lots of oil during build and plenty there on inspection.

So faulty bearings?? or poss a bad linebore?? Its the only bit my local engineer didn't do as he's not a vw guy. Hopefully off to his tomorrow or wed to get it all looked at. I think the cranks OK.

An 009 works. Ive spun my brazil one up to 7800 and no float. Now I use it to break in customer's engines-or mine. Are there units out there that work better? Sure. Hard to beat a mechanical 010 or 019 for bolt on performance.

Maybe the heads not being opened up on the intake is actually helping your air speed. Unless you plan to stroke it, id leave the heads alone on porting then. A set of dual carbs , 1.25s, dual springs, and CTF push rods will yield you noticeable power.

For now wean out the possibility of non fire ignition or carbs need calibrating to include the cleaning of jets out.

Me: Is your buggy set up for a 6 volt flywheel? Kid: I'll check, Kid: Yes 6 volt flywheel. Kid: Does your motor come with a flywheel? Me:( A liitle perturbed) YES ITS A 6 VOLT FLYWHEEL. Kid: ok I'll be over and bring my core.

Fast forward a few days. Kid & Dad show up. I look at the core.

Me: Kid this has a 12 volt flywheel. Kid: I had my neighbor check it and he said it was 6 volt. Me: How did he check it?

It came with dual springs, I was advised by a shop that it wasn't required and to just run the outers...yes they were aware which cam I was running too. not going back there.....i still have the inner springs. Can I just slap em in?

The easiest worthwhile bolt on that will give you better mpg and power potential is dual carbs. I really think that first, you should wean out the possibility that theres a problem with the carbs itself on setup or ignition firing.
Yes you can just slap em in, you will need to get/borrow/appropriate a spring removal tool that can remove the bits while the engine is still installed or drop the engine. You can use compressed air, set that particular cylinder to TDC, compress air inside to keep the valve up, then tie a small piece of floss to keep the valve up while taking the valve train apart. Some times the valve will stay in place if your careful applying the spring compressor and you wont need compressed air. Takes finesse!

The shop that did your engine might have decided to just use the outers while using the stock 1.1s ( if thats whats on there) and stock aluminum pushrods. NOTE. You WILL have to do CTF pushrods-preferably HD ACnet aluminums or chromolys if you step up the to dual springs and ratio rockers. This is the most important of all. You already have the right CR in there. By adding 1.25s to the W120, you will bring more potential from your 42 valved heads. Id also match port the manifolds if you have port work done on those heads. If you dont feel comfortable of doing any of this work -as all this is a huge task in itself, take it to a reliable shop to have done.

Yes, the rod can be rebuilt. That was my first job when I was 12 years old. I rebuilt connecting rods for a whole summer. The bolts get pressed out, you cut the cap, put it back together, bore out the big end and then hone it to exact size. It technically makes the rod shorter.

Do you think that may solve the cam compression issue? It came with dual springs, I was advised by a shop that it wasn't required and to just run the outers...yes they were aware which cam I was running too. not going back there.....i still have the inner springs. Can I just slap em in?

right this is a ongoing fault i keep getting a lean miss on no4 cyl

engine is 1835cc autolinea heads
electric pump fuel pressure 2psi (gauge on line)
-6 fuel lines
dell 40s pertronix billet dizzy and coil
ngk d6ea plugs magnecor leads
valves set at 6thou alloy pushrods

i can get the car running great at tickover slowly as she gets warm a lean miss develops on no4

you can drive through it and when you accelerate its ok its just on light throttle/light acceleration when the accel pump works its ok

ive rebuilt the carb and blown everything out and can set it all up and it runs fine soon as you go out and get it warm the miss comes back

could it be the inlet valve/seat?

Its odd that 42x 37 heads arent already dual valve springs. Especially with a w120 cam which is required. Are u sure someone didnt just run the outer springs only? Thats something u need to really look close at and make sure. Are the rockers 1.1 now? If y decide that u want to do 1.25s, dual valve springs is a no brainer requiremwnt, new pushrod geometry needs done and new pushrods cut to fit. Lots of work.

OK to bad, thanks,

I said this in another post but it is good info. I was afraid to low profile tires due to all guys saying when they hit a pot hole they crack a rim.

That problem I was told is not a problem on a rear engine car, two guys can lift the front end, we only use between 17 an 22psi, no engine to come crashing down. Love my 195 50 15 tires and did not believe my handling would get any better but it did, and by a lot.

any reccomendations as far as rockers go? Is there any machine work that needs to be done to upgrade to dual springs?

If your going to get duals, fine buy a snail. Synchronizing a single carb dual is useless since both plates are on the same shaft. Unless yoyr messing woth the idle air bleeda in which maybe. Set af mixtures and the set your idle speed. Done. If youre not getting ANY kind of response adjusting your mixtuee screws something is awry in your ignition not firing or carbs are dirty etc.

Thats very interesting. I never considered the stoich point of the mickey mouse fuel we call gasoline.

I wonder how my setup interprets it. My laptop displays an AF reading with no inputs for fuel type. It shouldn't matter what fuel you are running...the O2 sensor just knows how much air is blowing past it. Now if you are trying to go stoich through math, yes fuel type is important.

My goals are MPG, longevity, some power, getting temps up.

AF for me is not a tuning goal, but rather a reference point for the ECU to use. Once I find the pulsewidth that gets the temps I want...I'll check the AFR and change my targets to that AFR and let the ECU fill in the blanks. Now if my ECU would detect EGT...then you could just say I want "X" exhaust temperature and REALLY let the ECU take over. Then AFR just becomes a talking point.

You should see if the compartment light works when you open the door now, it used to work and something happened. I assumed the light went bad, but it's something else.

I always tune off of Lambda to prevent that fuel change BS. But really it doesn't matter.

If you use a gauge set to display "A/F" for "gasoline", and run alcohol in it, the A/F reading will still work, since it assumes 14.7:1 is stoic. It basically translates Lambda to "A/F" depending on what fuel you have set the gauge to. You can run alcohol, and tune the same as gasoline. Yes it's true you are not at 14.7:1, but if you are at 12:1 you know you are rich, even though you are really at 6:1. Knowing if you are rich or lean is what matters.

And it is true that most guys are too rich and don't even realize it.

good advice! I will give it a shot.. I downlaoded the "how to set your weber" file and did it per that. Got the idle real low, and went from there. Didn't let it sit and run for a full 30 tho...maybe thats the variable? I try it! I don't own a snail yet...i'm guessing this is a must have?
Might anyone know the maker of this Pump / Filter combo? Is it any good?
It's NOS and I'd like to put it on my 1962, 1200, 40 hp. Filter and a little added oil to the total oil capacity sounds like a good thing. No problem with exhaust clearance for me.

with 175 airs, and 145 mains, it's rich at WOT.

with 175 airs, and 140 mains, it's lean at WOT.

tiny little hesitation in progression.

I'll try 180 airs, 145 main, and start to try sourcing 142.5s.

Still hard to really judge mileage, I'm doing to many pulls at WOT.

I've also re-installed the original throttle plates, and drilled a 1.5mm hole in the plate, towards the progression slot. I'm pretty sure I'm now idling @ 750 rpm, with the throttle plate out of progression.

I'll check how closed they are when I swap jets tomorrow.

I think I'm almost there...

You may need to clean your carbs. You can get on YouTube to find your way through it. But first pull your air mixture screw all the way out and make sure you haven't over tightened it. It should come to a needle point. If you over tighten it you could have pulled out the brass fitting. If so you need to pull carb and fix it. Next, above your air mix screw is another brass screw that has a jet on it. Pull that and clean the jet real well. What are you pulling as far as air at idle on your snail gauge? If idle is too fast it can be tricky to set your carb. Before cranking tighten air mix screw all the way in ( not too tight) and back out 3 full turns. Crank car and let completely warm up. Then start turn in 1/4-1/2 turns pausing for at least 30 seconds. Listen to motor at idle no reving. It will run smoother until it starts to run rough again. Back out a 1/4-1/2 turn and you are set. Take note on what your jet is and the other jets are at the top of the carb. Tell us your elevation and engine specs again and some of the pros may be able to help you on your correct jetting.
