Pull off what you can then use a propane torch and a putty knife to scrape off the goo/glue. Won't damage the tunnel more than a little scrape here and there. Do it outside because it gets stinky.

Thanks again. Yeah, removing the rattle can is priority 1. I've read the horror stories of new paint not sticking, or bubbling up. Sounds like I have it in hand. I will probably go around the car once more with 220 to be sure it's gone.

I knew when I started spraying it that it would have to come off. I understand why I did it, but I don't know if I would do it again. I would probably prefer to re-sand the bare metal parts repeatedly then deal with this!

I believe it is a 1.4. I am going to reshoot sunday morning. With my anest iwata gun does 15 or 16 psi with the fan open and the material knob at 2.5 to 3 turns sound pretty close? It has the orange cap. I am also relatively new to the hvlp gravity feed. With the regulator stickin off the bottom and the cup on top it makes for a tall gun and it is difficult to get it in some places without stickin the hose in the paint, things like under the top of the windshield frame. Can anybody tell me or post a pic of your airhose regulator setup.........Steve

As the others have stated, make sure you remove all the spray stuff or it might show up in your glossy new paint job.

I tend to stop at 180-220 for primer, and I'll go to 320 before applying color.

If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that normal "greasing" was in order to keep the door locks functioning. You can open your door, pry back a tiny piece of the weather striping and find one screw adjacent to the door handle. Pull that screw out, then pull the door handle up and out (towards the rear of the vehicle) and it should slide out. Your locking mechanism is attatched to that. Wipe off all the old grease and grime off of it and start working it till you can get the key to work.

Worst case scenario, a new door handle with lock and key is like 30 bucks all over the place...

Yep, 60 is pretty chilly to be painting. Did you get it re-shot? Weather should be a bit better for it now. But it can still be tricky. Does your gun have a 1.4mm tip?

Dont leave any of the spray bomb on there. I think the ultra fine will be ok, but if your worried, hit the bigger areas with a red scotchrite or some 220 again.

Of course being in Fla this time of year that may be a problem. Could use dry ice or a fire extinguisher to quick freeze sections of it as you go. Any heat will just turn it into a gooey mess. Bug and Tar remover will clean up any left on residual stuff.

You know....I love how in this day in age people find it so easy to s#$@ on what other folks like with their opinion. Its ok to have opinions but to make your opinions into what you consider fact and use it to make other folks feel like what they like is stupid or less is just messed up. To EACH his OWN....I prefer patina, some prefer shiny, its a beautiful and diverse world. I like em both.....and I am NOT lazy for loving patina, I appreciate age and the "story" that comes with something that shows its age.

you would be better off stopping at the 220 and spraying the epoxy primer .

I would talk with your paint store and find out what is recommended there products

You should be okay as far as the epoxy adhering to the surface, as long as you mix it and spray it according to the data sheet.

I'd be washing and wiping it thoroughly with a good wax and grease remover first though - that spray bomb primer might cause fisheyes in the epoxy.

It all depends on the quality of paint. Material cost for a complete Nason paint job will run you about $600, while PPG will cost $750-900, and Glasurit is over $1000.

Hello all,

I'm going to drive down to NYC this coming Monday (april 20) and I'll be staying a couple of weeks, eventually heading down to tennessee in my 78 Bus.

I need a dent rounded out and repainted, and possibly some similar work around the bottom rocker panels and a sizeable section of the driver's floor pan needs to be cut out and some metal welded in. (nothing where pedals or anything would likely need to be removed).

Anyways, I certainly won't need to drive the bus when I'm in NYC and would love to park it at a body shop and have work done there while I wait for the next leg of a trip.

Can anyone recommend someone in / en route to NYC (from Toronto, ON) that does good work for a good price & can likely turn it around in a couple of weeks? (is that realistic even?)

Hi everyone,

I finally got my pan back from the body shop after they separated the body and I'm removing all suspension, break lines and all so I can replace the pan halves and paint it. My question is regarding the sticky crap that the PO used to glue the body to the pan (looks like black body sealer) and the Styrofoam filled tar paper that VW put on the tunnel. what is the best method to remove this stuff. I have not tried anything on it yet. What have you used?
