The only vw DNA left is the sheet metal...

Looks like a Buick V8 .. maybe a 61-63 all aluminum 215 under that (Ford Blue???) paint .. or could be a later iron 300

Another Steel In Motion.. in the books... Slow start Sat morn, due to a certain "cat", that was hard to kick out of the garage... .
I got a call 30 minutes before we were scheduled to leave, that pops 67 Mercury Cougar that my bro drives occasionally, "won't start"... sooooo..since I live and breath turning wrenches.... I volunteered to fix it.. ended up being a fairly simple fix.. it had a hung (up), carb float... But it set us back more than an hour...

Off to the races.....rained the entire drive there... After waiting on I 85 to clear due to a flipped car, stops for food and fuel, ...spitting and sputtering.. slooooowly we made it...(thank you Rain X)..

Pretty good day despite crappy weather. Good turn out with people that don't mind getting their cars wet, dirty, and enjoy the drive. Weather pushed the racing way off pace.. and it was late in they day before the track cleared.. so the masses were ready.
But... newly added funny car racing , a few early vehicular mishaps on the track slowed the regular fast pace grudge racing even more..it seemed less regular folk with regular but fast street cars were running this year.. that I missed..
Still lots of nostalgic style cars running hard.. and fast.

What shadows around were getting long, our 51 Mercury was having brake issues, it was getting late and thought it was best to head home with at least the last of the available daylight......
We elected no runs for us .....kinda stinks....but it was still a great day...

I smacked the front sway bar, beam and lower engine support on an asphalt burm running about 60 at dusk.. threw a shower of sparks... Pop said it looked like a small explosion.....sweet...
Loaded down... It was about an inch and a half off the ground... No serious damage thankfully.. l still got to smoke it over....

Ok, so I managed to color-match the paint on the car. Turns out it's a base coat clear coat urethane, so that should make blending any areas a little easier.

I'm dry fitting up the front end and getting the 73 bumper brackets to fit up with the ugly 74 triangular holes. I'm also going to move the bumper about an inch closer in to the body. So today I modified the brackets and started work test fitting one of the brackets. I also have the 73 bumper hole seals.

That looks like a film prop to me, they used VW chassis to makje weird looking cars in Total Recall i think..

I was thinking the same thing. Looks too weird for someone to have thought of as an actual vehicle to drive. Of course you could say the same thing about snorkelstang so you never know.

I'm a newbie (probably pretty obvious). My grandfather bought one of the first 51 Bugs sold in Holland in 1947 by Ben Pon. I found a few pictures, and if anyone has any information about it- I think I'm safe in saying that that's unlikely- it would be very appreciated. The "L" designation refers to the Province of Utrecht.

The first photo was in the Ardennes in 1948.

Thanks for the offer, man! Actually, I am sending the computer to Mario at thedubshop.com because DIYAutotune was not interested in helping me out. Apparantly, they do not work on their own products once they are out of warranty. Instead, they recommend a tuning shop that does all their re-work and out of warranty work. That was a huge letdown for me, because I really don't feel like I have as much support with my Megasquirt as I thought I did. To be fair, they did give me a huge list of things to check, but when I couldn't get any good readings, that's when they stopped being helpful.

No matter, I am looking forward to seeing how The Dub Shop works out.

As far as wheels and tires, I love talking about wheels! How about if I just list off all the pros and cons with all the setups?

1. 15x6 and 15x7 Fuchs:
The front wheels rubbed on the lower balljoint when I put slicks on the car and got a lot more body roll, so I decided that I needed bigger wheels. Other than that, I would have kept the 15s on the car. I liked the look of the smaller wheels with balloon tires, because it's more vintage road race looking. But with dropped spindles, it just did not work. Plus, they probably just weren't wide enough. And Cookie Cutters have the same offset and size, but they weigh less and are cheaper. Smart people would run Cookie Cutters instead, but coolguys would run Fuchs for maximum coolguy points.

2. 17x7 and 17x8.5 Turbo Twists
These required thick 1" spacers due to the late Porsche offset which means very long lug studs, and I just didn't like that. They felt very rough, because of the tiny side walls. But I did think that the 255s on the rear looked awesome. These wheels made me want bigger brakes, because you can totally see everything behind them! I would probably still be rolling them, because they're awesome, but they didn't fit the vintage look that I wanted. If I ever build a later model Germanlook type of bug, I will not use any other wheel. They're light and strong, and they look good. Plus, you can find a set with tires for like $400 on Craigslist. You really can't beat that.

3. BBS lookalikes.
These probably looked the most aggressive on my flat black car. I loved staring at the stagger in them them while I rolled them! They were cheap ($400 at a swap) but they weren't as light as the cookie cutters. Then again, they did fit over my balljoints, so I liked that. These wheels would still be on my car if I hadn't found the 17" Fuchs. A friend bought them from me and is putting them on his Germanlook 73 standard Bug, which is gloss black. He's refinishing them in the stock gold paint, and I am sure I am going to be jealous of them every time I see them. Did I mention that he works with me, so I will see his car almost every day in the parking lot? dammit.

4. 16"x 7" Fuchs
I still have these, with my slicks on them for racing. I stumbled upon these on Craigslist for $350 so I had to pounce! That's so cheap for real Fuchs. But honestly, I hate how they look on the car. I don't know what it is, maybe the lack of a stagger? But they just look puny. They're Fuchs, just like every other custom bug out there. Maybe that's it, they just seem boring to me. Or maybe I need to spend a few thousand dollars on a pair of 16x9s for the rear? That'll never happen, so I will never know. Bottom line, they're excellent for holding up a set of race tires. Light, Forged, and the offsets are seriously perfect.

5. 17x7.5 x 17x9" Rota FakeFuchs.
My favorite, in appearance, by a LARGE margin. They look so vintage race car, yet they are larger diameter so they have a modern feel as well. It's a perfect combination for my vintage looking, modern-powerplant Bug! Not only that, but they fill the wheel wells just absolutely perfectly. I would never have paid the money for them, but since they came on a project car that I bought, I gladly stole them. They do ride a little bit rough with the short stiff sidewalls, and tires aren't hte cheapest, but Tthe look totally makes up for that in my opinion. They weigh a ton, and I wouldn't really trust them 100% on a real race track. I would autocross them if I had to, but I like that I have the 16" genuine Fuchs for that. These are just prettyboy street tire wheels.

If I had to choose just one set to roll, I would go with the 16x7 Fuchs, and paint them silver like these 17" Fuchs, for that RSR look. And I would actually prefer to go with 15s if I could fit them over my balljoints.

Thanks. It's on hold until I get the DC done. I'm hoping I'll be back on this some time after summer. I've got some big plans for it!

I love driving it. Only problem I have is the roads in Oklahoma aren't the best for low cars.
