Molly's vet trip ate up half my day and $600. She has a touch of pneumonia from all of that throwing up, plus a fever and some serious Esophagus issues. She eats the cat crap that the neighbor's cats leave in the yard, and at 2-1/2 years old, she has already cost nearly $4000 in GI issues alone from "snacking!" I keep telling her how our last family yellow lab lived to be 21 years old and never had such expensive vet bills, but Molly's young and she don't care!

ANYWAYS....Congrats on the long marriage! It's cool that you have someone that wants your car done as much as you do! Welding on a rusty VW is a great way to better your welding skills, if they need honing. There is a lot to learn when doing sheet metal work too, but it can be an extremely fun experience. Your seats turned out nice BTW! Keep up the good work! It makes me want to get off my butt and finish my VW projects! I really need to at this point!

Sounds to me like your transmission mounts are bad. Do you have your accelerator cable tube in place between the body/engine? Replace those mounts!

For the braking system we will be using a German FTE dual master cylinder from WW. I spent a month trying to find a new reservoir to sit on top. I ended up buying one from VW for about $130 I tried every vendor online and they all stated they could not source one. The local VW dealer showed 3 available in the U.S. I bit the bullet in the name of safety. I will be using an original 66 reservoir in the stock location to fill the dual reservoir sitting on top the master cylinder. The entire braking system is being replaced with German parts from WW. All of the replacement suspension components have also been sourced from WW. I destroyed my pedal assembly trying to remove the pin from the clutch pedal but was able to source an original pedal assembly at a local swap meet. Have the rebuild parts for the pedal assembly so it should be like new when we finish the pan. We are using Boge oil filled shocks, German bearings and ball joints for the front end and tie rods. The steering box is original and appears within spec at this point. Pics to follow
Finally feel like we are moving forward!
This a first in several ways. In my late 40's, and
this is my first VW, and my first project car.

My initial dream of taking it out this summer with
my wife wine tasting in the Sonoma hills has
faded away. It won't be ready for that THIS summer.

I'm looking at having it running by the end of the year.

I'll post more pictures as notable progress is made.

Sonoma is overrated anyways! Keep spending your time sitting in the car at night making "Vrooom Vroooom" noises for entertainment. Much cheaper than actually filling the gas tank up! haha

It has been a little over a year since I updated this post. It has been a slow year as we have been deciding which way to go with the car not to mention three boys in sports and my job. I have been slowly acquiring OG metal, 66 only parts, and German replacement parts. The body and pan have been separated, I did not build my one man lift. I found more rust than I expected, but I told my boys this just means more opportunity to hone welding skills. We have finally found the end of the rust and have the majority of the replacement parts for the pan and body. In the next few weeks we will start our upward path of restoring the pan, and by the end of the summer when the heat here in Florida subsides we will be ready to tackle the body. We have enough replacement parts to keep us busy and I will post the latest pics soon. I will make sure we update as we move forward and sometimes backwards.

Subject: Help!, weird throttle problem. Take a look!
So I was driving home from the gas station today and my throttle kept getting stuck. The problem is that. It's only when the clutch is let off and in gear... Example: In neutral or clutch pushed in and in gear, the trottle is fine, revs up and down nicely. However, once it is in gear and i start to release the clutch pedal (to get going), if I press the gas more then 1/4 of the way down, I start driving uncontrollably with no effect of using the gas pedal. Now the throttle sticks until the engine revs up to 5k, or until I push the clutch pedal in. However, if the engine is still at a higher rpm, when i go to shift gears, I push in the clutch, shift to 2, or 3rd. Release the clutch, the engine will start revving up again. Again!!! This is all without using the gas pedal...

Now. I raised the car up on jackstands. Got the back wheels off the ground. Try to imitate how I was driving it to get it again to drive out of control, yet everything was fine. I went through all the gears and the throttle did not get stuck once (maybe because there was no load on the tires)?

One thing that I did notice though is that when I lifted the tires off the ground. I can take both of my rear tires, and pull the axles in and out about 1/4 of an inch. Only one side had a loose bearing cover. Working on buying the parts to repair the loose axles, however, I'm doubting it is going to fix my weird throttle problem.....Anyon e have any suggestions?

Looks like you have to adjust your choke to open up fully.

Did you connect up the wire to the choke?

Did you oil up the throttle shaft on both sides of the carb??

The return spring on the carb that you are pointing out in your video. It looks like it is binding up and not letting the throttle plate get pulled back into position. You see how on your video the spring is staying slightly extended. That is wrong. It should look like the picture below. if you get it to keep from binding up the car will return to its normal idle provided nothing else is going on. You may have the spring on backwards so that it is getting jammed in the linkage or maybe your throttle cable is binding up somewhere. But my guess would be you have the spring on wrong since it was ok before you changed the carb out.

I bought my first '61 bug back in January. The PO put a 2007 cc engine in it, and it's a blast to drive! I had a 74 Thing about 9 years ago with a stock 1600 cc engine, slow, but really fun. You can imagine how much more fun my bug is! It has one of the dip stick replacement temperature gauge, and it got hot on me last weekend after a 40 minute easy drive (no faster than 55 mph). Had to pull over and let it cool, but made it home safely. I have now installed the cooler to the underside of the parcel shelf in the rear but that's all. My bug has a full flow oil filter behind the rear tire. I also have an in-line thermostat and not sure where that goes. So you see I'm in a pickle here, not sure what to do next. The cooler has 1 tiny line diagram, but nothing too specific.

They are -6 but I've since replaced the regulator. It came with a setup I bought and I never liked it. I just used it for a mockup waiting for my other one to come in. I wouldn't recommend the regulator it felt cheap and just by the shitty construction I didn't want to use it.

To tell if its lower I would say mount the tires and see if its lower. But what I find interesting is how the bolt for the rear shock was installed backwards when the car doesn't look like it has had the body off in a very long time.

I don't know whats going on with these Empi Universal Throttle cables but I go through one every 2 months. They snap at the cable as it exits the dogleg end. I have a '59 pedal assembly with a cheap roller pedal (previous owner). I'm running a 40hp with a pict28 and carb spacer for alternator clearance which is why I buy the longer HD cable. The the weak point is where the stranded cable is wedged into the dogleg. I don't remember having this many issues with cables in any of my cars. Are these cables garbage or does my roller pedal look like its pulling the cable outward or something. I'm thinking about converting to a stock pedal, but I have to figure out if this is a cable issue or a roller pedal issue first.
The factory only specs what the unladen setting of the rear spring plates are, and the ride height is a product of that. Short of measuring those, all you can do is get a relative comparison beside a like model car. There should roughly be about 1"-2" of distance between the wheel opening of the fender above the tire diameter.

Photo is not the best angle but the spindles don't look like they are dropped, the speedo cable would be ~2 1/2" higher if so. Here are some photos to compare them to...

Pull the negative cable off the battery and put a test light between the cable and hte post, if it lights up you have a draw. Start pulling fuses until the light goes ouot. then start looking at hte things that are on that fuse for a draw. At least you don't have to wait half an hour for all the computers to go to sleep to check for a draw like I haveto do on some new cars......

The wrist pins should be a pretty tight fit in the pistons. Aluminum has a much higher rate of expansion than bronze or steel. In the factory manuals, they often show the use of a heating element/tool to expand the piston slightly on assembly and dis-assembly as well.
Having them checked at a machine shop is a good idea, but you should take along the correct specs for them to go by. If you don't have a Bentley manual, you can find the proper tolerance and specs here...

Sounds like it's time to pull & disassemble the carb, then let it soak for 30min to an hour followed by a thorough blowing out of the passages and jets.

First thing you need to do is figure out why the throttle isn't closing like it should. Main causes that come to mind would be a binding throttle cable (you can check this by disconnecting the cable at the carb to see if the throttle snaps shut properly), the accelerator pump linkage is binding on the generator, or the nuts that hold the linkages on the throttle shaft are overtorqued (least likely, but possible). Until you can get the carb to reliably fully close at idle, you can't really do much else.

Car makers will often plan up to four or five years ahead for that years production of cars, and VW was/is no exception. The US market was/is a major factor in what went on the cars when. Hazard lights were a requirement for all '66 US cars, but you don't hear much about them. They were well aware of what needed to be done to a particular model for compliance years in advance.

There is little official information to back it up, but my theory is a lot of the changes were made to comply with the impending '68 US Federal safety regulations. Things such as dual circuit braking system, visible door lock buttons, flush inside door release handles, un-covered headlights, reverse lights and vertical mounting of the rear license plate are prime examples of this. There were also more stringent anti-theft requirements coming in '68, thus the new double profile ignition/door lock cylinders/ keys are an answer to those too.

As for the revised/lowered rear chassis settings, remember that guy Ralph Nader? No doubt this was done to address the then current issue of ill handling swing axle equipped cars.

I believe the 1500cc engine was simply their response to the horsepower race of the '60's. Many period magazine road tests of the time were asking "how long can VW keep selling these cars?", and more power did a lot to quiet their voices.

The 12v electrical system was only changed in the US market, and again that might suggest they were trying to make the car more user friendly for buyers in the States.

You can test for battery drain as described on Jim Mais' invaluable site here -

http://www.speedyjim.net/schem/drain.gif

FWIW, I measured a mere 40mA draw on my (6V) system which isn't a lot but took a new(ish) Optima battery from starting right up on the first turn of the key to struggling to turn over within a week or so of the car sitting idle. The numbers suggest this shouldn't be the case but there you go I remedied the cause of the small drain (got the residual current down to 6mA) and everything seems much better.

<img src='http://robrien.orconhosting.net.nz/VW/P1010237.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://robrien.orconhosting.net.nz/VW/P1010237.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.

12V electrickery is probably a lot more forgiving
Every time I get new moon caps (no logo, just smoooth...oh my) for my '61 Beetle, the chrome peels off within a couple months! And mostly my car just sits in the garage under a car cover! I've purchased 6 extra caps so far! I can't find a higher quality cap...all I see at the various online stores is a $10-14 hub cap. A local chrome plating shop quoted me several hundred dollars to strip my current ones & refinish them.

Isn't there ANY happy medium here? Does anyone know where I can get higher quality moon caps for my girl???

Every year of VW has the "one year only part syndrome" Seems the 67 has more. Glad I do not have one anymore.

No, unless the radio is malfunctioning. With a good battery it would take at least a couple months. With these cars there are only a couple things that can cause a draw. Dome light, alternator/regulator, headlights left on. My guess is probably a battery

Rod can't be tight-- you need space for oil to circulate from rod bushing to pin. No pressure lube from pin to piston, just splash-- it does not need to rotate or have any clearance; it is not a sliding friction surface like the rod bushing.

Are they off just a little, or a lot? If they are sagging, I would slightly open one door at a time to where it just passes the running board and place a bottle jack near the door corner. Use something between the jack and door like a piece of wood, thick rubber, a few towels, etc. Carefully start jacking up the door - but don't go crazy - and then back down to check your progress. Hopefully this is all that needs to be done.

I think there are two check balls. One between the bowl and diaphragm, and the other between the diaphragm and outlet into throat of carb. Sounds like the first one is clogged. I cleaned out one a while back and I think I used a small tap to remove the brass plug located inside the bowl. I couldn't believe the amount oxidation that was found.

Hi All, as the PO of my beetle was pretty clueless about what was what I am learning new things about it as I go along....

The rear end has been lowered (I think) not sure how I check this though! but the main worry was that there are no rear bump stops in place (see pic below) I have ordered a pair & will fit these when they arrive.
Do I need to cut these down & if so how close should the top of the bump stop be to the bit that hangs above it?
<img src='http://i1067.photobucket.com/albums/u436/r2ooo/605FB26F-F670-4BA3-B52D-AFA9C8446BB4-1666-00000215247B32C6_zpscf2b3fb4.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i1067.photobucket.com/albums/u436/r2ooo/605FB26F-F670-4BA3-B52D-AFA9C8446BB4-1666-00000215247B32C6_zpscf2b3fb4.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.

As for the front suspension, well there are a few unknowns on that too! I know its been lowered & has an adjustable beam fitted. The PO told me that he 'Thinks' it had dropped spindles too!, I have attached a pic as I don't know what I'm looking for here:

The narrowed beam seems to be 65/66cm wide or there abouts, what is the width of a standard beam on a 1962? Also any ideas as to the type of narrowed beam this is?
Subject: An Update
Posted: Today 2:54 pm (GMT -7)
Topic Replies: 23

Hi Guys, thanks for all the replies. Here's an update of what I have found after dropping the engine & doing a full nut & bolt rebuild.

99% sure it was a combination of:
No rubber heat seals in the engine bay.
Sticking oil pressure relief valve which had crud stuck around the little piston, poor timing and possibly a faulty fuel pump leaking some fuel into the case resulting in thinning of the oil.
This in turn has caused one of the valves to stick and bent one or two of the pushrods.

We Sealed the block back together today; new cam, lifters, cam bearings, main bearings, oil pump

Apart from some slight wear on the camshaft nodes and main bearings all looked good inside the case, no cracks or nasty surprises!

Fingers crossed!!

I have made a decision to fit a standard mechanical fuel pump to start with and then switch over to electric posi once I have the engine back in and running. Then if there are any issues I don't have so many new changes to check over.

As I understand it from a video on YouTube, 4 gaskets on top of the pedestal will give a suitable fuel pressure for dual weber 34 ICT.

I have a aftermarket radio in my 63, which has been converted to 12 volt. I drove it last about a week and a half ago, went to drive it yesterday and it wouldn't turn over, just clicking. The battery was just charged and checked to be good before the last time I drove it. Could the memory on my radio drain the battery in that little time?

I have read that the closer to the carb(s) the regulator is the better according to Holley and several other manufacturers of electric pumps. It's nice to hide it behind the shroud on the firewall or directly on the shroud. Just make sure you can get to it to adjust it

If you have an electric pump, put it under the tank with the pump. If you have a mechanical pump, shim the pump and don't bother with a regulator.

BTW... my friend's Thing burnt to the ground due to a leaking cheap regulator like the round chrome one.

ok cleared the passage of the ball bearing as you said. I assembled the diaphram again. I tried pumping it a few times filled it with gas and It doesn't pump. I was wondering about the hole on the right under the diaphram it doesn't seem like when I fill the carb with gas any of it flows out? I also removed the main jet it was a lil dirty cleaned that out. I just ordered another rebuild kit also.

The wrist pins through the bushing are perfect, no play at all with just a little bit of finger force, my question pertained more to the fit through the pistons.

There's really no answer to "how tight is too tight?", but the thing I'd do is take the pistons and rods to a local automotive machine shop and get their input. You can "peck" the wrist pins in with slight hammer taps and not be too tight, but how hard is a hammer peck? I like the wrist pins to push through the piston with hard finger force and a little tighter through the bushing in the rod.

Perhaps you should spend a few more dollars and get the rods checked for straightness and have them re-bushed. This is cheap insurance.

I recently welded in a new lower driver side hinge pillar on my '67 and it's just not quite right. Ive tried to adjust my doors to the point that what hair I do have left is gone. I also can't seem to get my passenger side good either and the hinge pillar's are intact

I know doors take sometimes hours to get them right but I am at wits end. Does anyone know of a VW shop in the Orlando area that welds in new door hinge pillars and adjusts doors? K&K, Fisher Buggies, R&S Performance and Triangle dont do that type of work

Thanks!

You may be right. I was thinking it was a grafted original VW ragtop that was just laid ontop of a cutout in the roof, thus the obvious margin around the perimeter.

Have those king and link pins checked. When worn they can snap and you lose all steering control!

It's probably a job for a shop unless you have the tools and know-how. But once they fix it, be sure to lube it regularly, and also check the link pin adjustment every lube job (6 months or less). They last a long time if lubricated, not so long if neglected.

Adjusting tie rods depends on the tie rod ends-- some have clamps, some have a pair of nuts and a lockplate. I'm not sure what your model has.

This gallery photo shows both types: the near tie rod end has a clamp, and the far end has the two nuts.

<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/993127.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/993127.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

They are adjusted like a turnbuckle-- each end has opposite threads... loosen the ends, rotate the rod to lengthen or shorten it, and then tighten. You are shooting for a slight toe-in at the front (about 1/8 inch)

Do not sand them; you'd never get them smooth enough to not wear our quickly.

The pins can be a tight fit into the pistons, but they should be an easy slip-fit into the rod bushings.

1967 is not the only year with one-year-only parts, it just has a bunch of them. VW was always making small improvements.

VW did not have any "let's break it to the public slowly" plans; they made changes when it made economic sense, and as the market demanded it. As the Bug became more popular, and VW profits went up, they could afford more R&D and so the pace of changes increased steadily.

In the late '60s the reasons got a little more complicated, due to safety and emission regulations in the US.: imnproved bumpers, cleaner engines, collapsible steering, gas tank venting, etc.

But none of the '67-only parts are for these reasons; that started in '68.

There plenty of threads describing WHAT the 1967 one year only changes are, but I'm curious as to WHY. Was VW trying to transition the public slowly for the big changes that were to come? Why ?

In the process of putting my 1200/40hp engine back together. I had the heads redone and the pistons and cylinders cleaned and cylinders honed. I am going to use the original pistons and cylinders and install Grant rings. My question is, the wrist pins had to be hit out with a socket and extension and are tight on the pistons, do I have to sand the pins or the wrist pin hole? How easy should the wrist pin be to install? Is it hammered in as well or should I be able to install with minimal force? I'm also planning on using Ultra-Gray silicone around the base of the cylinder instead of the paper gasket, is that ok? Anybody have an extra wrist pin clip for a 77mm piston? One is a little worn down from a pin
I don't think the bows are flat. It looks to me like it is a streetbeat ragtop. You can tell by the raised ring around the roof hole. If it is street beat the bows are like that and the fact that it is not a factory roof graft that could hurt the value.

Too bad! If you had a 1965 or up bug and lived near me, I'd donate a pair of nearly complete (still fully operational) doors off a '66! You can probably get some scrap sheet metal from the local HVAC fab shop though for free. Then it's simply cutting and welding! I am NOT jealous of the work you have ahead of you! I'd even consider selling those rims in order to have money for doors to avoid all that welding! You can always buy new ones after the car is finished.

Don't worry about the dog laying down on the job though....my lab is doing the same thing right now, the difference being that she has this minor issue which is causing her to throw up all over the place (started yesterday morning )! Last time (3 months ago) it was only a mere $1250.00 vet visit....Part of the fun of playing this game is guessing how much the next visit will set me back!

And everyone wonders why my VW isn't running and I haven't been on a date in years! I already have a hobby AND a greedy girl that drains my wallet...her name is Molly!
