Just because it seems to not have any slop, doesn't mean it doesn't.
I just replaced mine a few days ago, along with the shift rod bushing, and my clutch cable. Almost shifts like new, with the exception of the syncros that are starting to go out in 1st, and 2nd.

If you guys want a "stock" bug, then build it yourselves, by hand, or something. Bizob should definitely keep track of changes that he makes, though. I would be fine with my modified car if I knew all the changes that have been made to it, but the P.O. is an idiot. The only solution for my OCD is to put a kit on it, that way I know all the right parts are there.

Thanks so much for the great reply. I really appreciate it! There was only a little bit of stale gas in the car when we got it, but still it fired on the first try after sitting at least 6 months. I will get the carb rebuilt and see how she goes! Thanks Jim

I think storing a car is retarded and is worse on them then actually using them. I am a car fanatic, have had several VWs, and other semi-valuable / rare cars. They are all lifeless pieces of metal and just because maybe there were less made with a certain option or a larger engine or whatever, someone said "hey, that's a rare find!" They are all just cars. I hate to see cars like this hacked up too, but it sounds like this guys mind has been changed form what he originally planned on his own car. I could go buy a brand new car, and on the same premise, be afraid to customize it or drive it at all but whats the point of owning a car if youre not going to drive it. Makes no sense. Take it back out of storage, drop it on the ground, Supe that sucker up and drive it!
Replace your shift coupler, and then check the shift rod bushing. Too much slop, and soon you won't be able to shift into any gear. It also could be a fuggled hockey stick.

Well first thing is to get the gas leaks stopped because if you don't, you may have a Car-B-Que.

Next, there are a few things to look at. You need fuel, spark and compression for the engine to run.

You have compression or else it wouldn't have gotten you around the block. And unless it blew up and threw a rod or dropped a valve, you should still have compression.

So you need to check for spark & fuel.

You probably have spark! But we'll get to that latter.

It sounds like you have fuel issues. First get the carb rebuilt and cleaned out. Make sure the float is floating and the needle valve is closing. And make sure it's CLEAN.

Next, if the car has been sitting for a long time, you really need to install a fuel filter. And you are NOT going to put it in the engine compartment!

The best place for that filter is under the fuel tank in the rubber hose that goes from tank to the steel line in the tunnel. If you jack it up and remove the right front wheel, you can get in there easy to do it.

That filter will keep any crap that has been in the tank from getting past to your fuel pump and carb.

Next find out what side your fuel filler neck is on and then jack up the OTHER side of the car. Then get out your flash light and take the cap off and have a look inside.

If you see things rolling around in there, it might be time to remove and clean the tank. Water will look like little jelly balls on the bottom of the tank.

You can also drop out the fuel pick up from the bottom of the tank. In the tank, the pick up tube has a sock screen over it. Sometimes that screen gets totally clogged and fuel can't pass through.

So if you see a lot of crap in the tank, you may want to pull the tank, clean it out and replace that sock screen. If you don't, this issue is just going to keep repeating itself!

Once you have the fuel issues all worked out, you need to check for spark. MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO GAS FUMES WHEN DOING THIS!

The easiest way to check for spark is to have the neighbor's kid stick their finger in the end of the plug wire while you turn the key. but if they arn't around, or are too smart for that, you will have to try something else.

Take the cap off the distributor and pull the rotor off. Open the points and take a look at how they are doing. If they are OK, while you are there, get out your feeler gauge and set the point gap. Then turn the engine until the points are closed.

Now go turn the key to "ON" and with a screw driver, open the points. You should see a spark jump when the points open. If so, put the rotor and cap back on.

If not, replace the condenser. If you get spark then, you are ready to go. If not, replace the coil. If you get spark then, you are ready to go. If not, go back and check you have the points installed correctly and they are not shorting out on the distributor body.

If you still don't have spark, come back and let us know! We'll try something else.

If you do have spark, fire her up!

That is good to know. It has kind of been put on the back burner this week but my plans for the weekend fell through so the starter will be coming out tonight and I'm going to take it to a VW shop tomorrow. I hope this is the fix, my wife is getting tired of me driving her car. I have three and can only drive one. I'm a little tired of it to. Thanks for the link I will make sure to get one of them.

Yeah, good point there too. If the engine is dirty down there, you might have to do some cleaning to find the casting number, but it looks like this:
That German F-block I used as an example above, this is its casting/part number-
This is what it looks like with the engine assembled (aftermarket case)

I'm trying to track down some of the owners of Beetles down here in my neck of the woods. In the last week, I've seen two purple Beetles (not sure what year, one was a convertible) and an orange one. Anyone on here who may be the owner? Just trying to find people with VW's in my neck of the woods. Thanks!

Mine does the same thing. Check the points then when your done, spray a little WD-40 in the cap. Living in the PNW, the monsoon season is upon us, and a little WD never hurt. When was the last time you did your valves?

Also check what Swhitcomb said. I had an 019 blue screamer give up the ghost on me, spacers went bad. IF the points don't fix it, change the distributor.

OK I got a chance to take a peek under the deck lid. Well it looks like the deck lid has been replaced with a later model year lid. The deck lid that is on there right now is pretty rough so I need to decide if it is to far gone to cut and section in new metal or just replace it. first things first though, I need to keep my butt from dragging on the ground through this holey rusted out floor.
Being that replacement engine cases or whole engines were a standard item at all VW dealerships, AND some states required the original engine number to be stamped on the new engine, even if it was a bigger later engine.

Best to check the part number cast on the right lower side of the case, just below the push rod tubes.

I had a similar issue with my 65. The heat is generated by resistance due to bad connections. Mine would also turn over sometimes, but after cleaning Y splices ( inline splices for battery feed and other leads) Fuse connections etc It fires right up everytime.

So clean every connection for battery feed and starter sw. Even do others, my Blinkers work better as well as my dome lite.

Good luck!

Let us know how it does!

Anybody know the order of the wires for a 111 953 513 F headlight dimmer/turn signal switch. It's for a 1974 beetle.

Wires coming off are yellow w/black stripe, brown w/white stripe, brown, black, black w/white stripe, and green. I just need to know the order they lay down in the plastic holder.

I googled the part and found photos but I couldn't tell the order of the wires.
Thanks.

All I'm saying is that if you're going to use blocks to support ANYTHING, you might as well arrange them in the most structurally sound way you can. It doesn't cost anything, and it takes 5 minutes to re-arrange. Are the blocks cracked? Are they weak? I don't know, but you're better off safe than sorry...wood is one thing, formed masonry is another.
BOTH! Car had been sitting- engine was filthy, but it did run and I drove it around the block (once). Now AFTER the cleaning it doesn't want to stay running and does leak out a lot of gas onto the carb.

Before you lift the body off to set on those blocks, why are you taking it off? Just to work on the pan, or do you need to do work on the body while it's off?

The body isn't real heavy. 2 guys can lift it off. If you have to do work on the body while it's off the pan, you might want to build something other then your stack of blocks that would allow you to get better access.

Building a body dolly on wheels so you can move it around isn't that difficult.

I own a 64 hard top, best to go with a handle from a 68 vert that way you know it will work. I'm sure the classified, CL or Evil bay will have one. If you are luckier then me you might even have an old air cooled VW bone yard in your area. Here where I live they stopped recycling the air cooled parts about 5 years ago, sucks. Now its all on line for me.

Man, listening to you guys talk about those blocks you would think the body weighs 80,000 pounds!

One of the first things I did when I bought my Bug was to rebuild the carb. The float looked good, was not leaking. The carb was very grungy and was missing two of the five screws that hold the upper and lower bodies together. I had a bit of trouble sourcing them since they are an unusual pitch. I ended up getting some from a local VW shop that had an old carb laying around for free. The 28 solex is more simple than one of the units off my bike. I'm not an expert. This is my first VW. I've just owned alot of vehicles in my 53 years. When I was about 6 I tore my grandfathers Briggs and Straton lawn mover engine apart. Thought he would kill me, until I put it back together and it ran. I was always tinkering on something or the other. My other toys enclude a 74 Honda CB 750K4 and a 72 Honda CT 70. Still wish I had my Kawasaki triple though, that thing was a rush to ride. I just spotted a 72 Kawasaki H2 I almost bought for $6000 on Craigs List for $6500. I guess it was too much bike for the guy who bought it? First and fastest year the 72, and this bike was super clean. Custom hand made tomcat chambers perfect blue paint...sweet. Ah now I got tears on my keyboard ah crap LOL

I have to do this myself, or mgiht have a young helper...but we will not be lifting the body at any stage..This is my plan thus far.

1. Jack it up, & place it on jack stands. (so I can crawl under to spray, socket, or drill the pan bolts just depends on how rusted it is I reckon, to low to tell atm)

2. run 2x4s across the blocks front/back to support the body.

3. remove jack stands and drop the frame/transaxle (no motor) and roll it out of the way.

4. Using blocks, jackstands and jack, lower the body onto the ground. or 1 block high off the ground (havent decided) we have high winds though.

OR 5. drop the body onto a 4x4 trailer with 2x4s across to support body and leave it on the trailer(have to talk my dad into letting me use a trailer)

I will eventually either sell the body, or learn body repair/painting from my dad using the body...and then sell the body. I have no intrest in keeping the body.

Anyway thats my plans, I know I could make a nice frame to do what I am doing with blocks, but I think the blocks will work, and want to work with what I have.

Thanks for all the feedback/disscussion/ideas

X2

A body dolly makes seperating the body and pan an easy process. Once it was all unbolted it took one guy front and rear to lift the body straight up and take about 4 steps to the right and set the body on the dolly. The dolly is simply constructed with 3" wheels. It clears the front tires on the chassis so I can roll it around in the garage if need be.

It also allows the body work to be done at a good height. With a rolling shop chair its very ergonomically correct.

Got the blocks flipped around, stronger this way?

I dont like the fact the 2x4 will have to sit on top the blocks, the other way I could have slid the board through the holes in the block to help keep it from moving.

Anyway til I can get a replacement jack I guess thats all I can do, included a pic of the POS jack just because.

Definitely rebuild the carb!!! It's not that hard, and your float or float valve my be stuck causing your endless leaking.
One thing I'd be very careful about is starting a VW with a leaking carb. When you do start it, keep a fire extinguisher handy, and turn it off right away if it's leaking fuel.

Last week I cleaned 40-plus years of debris of the engine in my '67 Bug. It will start, but then quickly stalls and won't start again. The carb is now leaking gas everywhere. Should I not be scared to give the carb a rebuild?
I bought all the new Bosch parts to give it a tune-up, but I think it will still be a fuel problem. It ran fine before I cleaned the engine.

If you're going to go the block route, go wood. Those blocks aren't made like they used to be. They used to pour the blocks and dry them, the new ones are made from a compacted powder.

I'll have to second what Drscope said. Yeah crome looks cool but you need to buy an OG handle and put it back to stock. I pulled on my E-brake one day too hard and it came apart. Argh! My John Muir book was hilarious, Muir tells you how stupid you are for allowing your parking brake to get out of adjustment and now you have to take it all apart to fix and adjust it. Bull Sh*t, all I had to do was unlock the two cable nuts, back the adjustments all the way loose. Then reinsert my button and pawl assembly into the handle. Line it up and with one hand I flipped the pawl up into the rachet gear and released it. Done. Then I adjusted the cables for 5-6 clicks on the handle and was good to go. The main reason your handle does not stay adjusted is as Dr Scope said. The clearences are too loose (read sloppy stone age Chinese made by political prisoners)on that aftermarket handle so the pawl will not stay lined up with the rachet gear. When you pull on it it falls to one side or the other and your brake fails to stay locked. The Chi Coms still use sand castings on some of their junk. On your last picture you can clearly see how the pawl is flopped over to one side, on a VW handle it lines up straight and stays in contact with the rachet.

I did my passenger door just the way you are planning. I did not grind any flats on the reamer, I just got it nice and tight in the hand tap. Use cutting oil, make sure you get it started straight, and it's really a piece of cake. Don't use a drill. You have much more control reaming by hand.

You have two different problems. The black, sooty smoke is usually a sign the engine is running too rich. The white/gray smoke is oil smoke and, when it appears as a puff at takeoff from idle, is often (although not always) indicative of bad rings.

With all due respect to the opinion of others, I don't think driving it hard is going to change a damn thing, but I'm not always right. Try it and see.

As far as adjusting the choke goes, the fact that the idle varies does indeed mean it is working on some level. I tried to find keifernet's instructions on adjusting the choke with a search, but didn't have any luck. He's the expert, if you can find that thread read it, but in case you can't:

Remove the air cleaner and look down the carb throat. You will see the butterfly valve of the choke.

Loosen, but do not attempt to remove, the three screws that hold the choke element in place. Push on the throttle lever so the fast idle cam (that thing on the side opposite the choke that the idle adjust screw rests on) is free to move.

Twist the choke element gently in place. You should see the butterfly valve open and close as you rotate the choke element.

Rotate the choke element until the butterfly valve closes, then back a little so it is just starting to open. Then lock the element down with the three little screws.

You may have to experiment a little bit, as choke elements are not all the same after they have aged a little. Once you find a good setting for the butterfly valve, make a note of where the idle adjust screw comes to rest on the fast idle cam. Then you can adjust the choke without having to remove the air cleaner.

The choke should be adjusted anytime the temperature varies significantly. In northern California, you may get away adjusting it four or six times a year. Here in central Texas, where the temperature can literally go from frost to ninety-seven to a frost again in the span of ten days, we have to adjust the thing almost everytime we start the car in winter. In late May, though, we can back the thing all the way off and forget about it until late September.

If adjusting the choke doesn't make any difference, other common causes of a too-rich mixture are a poor needle seat and excessive fuel pump pressure.

As far as the oil smoke is concerned, I personally would do a compression and/or leakdown test and see just what the condition of those rings is; but others will tell you just to keep driving. Again, it's your call.

My second beetle ( 1964/65 ) is a project car, and it was a pretty big mess to begin with... I have put it together , replaced and welded a lot of things on it (both floors, chassis head, heather channels, lower A piller, front tire well and apron and so on ) ... but, because it was such a mess to start with , it will not be perfect, but it will be a daily driver, ...

Anyway... because it's doors are total crap, I am considering replacing them with newer style doors ...
i am thinking 67-70's ( they are easier to find where i live )

Will they fit ? ( i am not interested in period correct )

greetings, did my search'n, not quite the answers im lookin for so ill ask directly. WWW reamer and 2nd oversize pins. im cautious,i want to ream by hand. doors off, will put hinge pieces in vice and get door at good working position to ream. the cautious part, prefer to grind 4 flats on drill chuck end for hand tap rather than run the drill slowly once through. i want control. anybody done it this way? it might seem like a silly , obvious question. no messing this up,no 3rd oversize i know of.

the cheeseball way would be to take off the front shocks and drop the back 2-3 notches, cost = an afternoon of labor. Or the good way is a narrowed adjustable beam ($200-400) plus front shocks and misc ($100-300) and install notched plates in the back ($100 plus shocks and misc $100) so a basic setup with new tie rod ends new bushings and bearings etc would be $400-500.... if you cut and weld and do your own beam and notchplates deduct $300, in other words, new shocks etc misc parts and you do all labor it's only $100-200. You could also spend a thousand or more for premium stuff, thousands for a bagged setup.

The stop switch is part of the wiper motor transmission and causes the output shaft to stop in a consistant position each time. There is a splined arm attached to that shaft. You can change where the wipers stop by reindexing that shaft.

The T handle deck lid also has a round hole for the handle. The newer latch type has a rectangular hole.

Probably somewhere along the way, this car got mashed in the rear and the lid was replaced with newer style parts.
