I can't see them lasting very long... no thanks.

If you can get an OG bowden tube do it.

Angled to the side probably means either the trans bracket is bent or the clutch tube in the chassis exits at a weird angle. May cause excess rubbing at the trans end if the bracket is bent out of position, but otherwise the direction of sag has no effect on the function of the bowden tube.

Most I have seen are metal, an this one doesn't seem to sag down the way it should- sags to the side, if that makes sense. Should I replace it with one of the metal- ended Bowden tubes? Shimming makes it bend, but sideways, not down. Any guidance?

I have purchased a 12v starter with 6v shaft and gear. So do I need this relay? And/or will the 12 v system burn it up?

Check to make sure the cable is straight when it attaches to the pedal linkage. If it's being pulled to the side it puts extra strain on the cable end and the strands break right where they meet the cable end. JUST like in your picture!

Ok, I'm starting to understand this now (sorry, I'm a little slow ) So let me go step by step, please correct me if I'm wrong:
1) Mount cooler to under side of parcel shelf
2) Screw in Fan Thermostat to the "inlet" port of cooler w/ Teflon tape
3) Connect barb to "outlet" port
4) 1 Hose from engine case (there's 2 hoses) now goes to the "inlet" port of the cooler
5) Attach the "outlet" oil hose to the full flow oil filter
6) Then from the filter, the other hose goes back to the engine case
7) Tight hose ends with hose clamps
Wire black & blue wires (not sure to what or where. I'm electrically ignorant)

Does this sound right?

The thermostat goes on the inlet side. Sorry I forgot to address that. You want it to measure the temps going in so if the oil is hot enough you get the extra cooling of the fan as it passes through.

Ok maybe not clear here, was late.do I NEED this relay? Why would someone put this on? Can we just remove from the setup? The VW schematics and info I have seen in my repair books do not show this. The new starter is in... Just have too many wires, and don't know which or what to use. 3 coming from engine compartment and the big battery cable from back seat...
Stuck and wanna drive...

So I should just automatically discount what these 2 mechanics think with their combined 55 years as VW mechanics? Hmmm k. You're saying they wouldn't pick up on an exhaust leak? Ouch.

Lets say that the mechanics are right about the cam. Is it still safe to have the timing slightly advanced?

Does anybody know who manufactures the one CB sells? Mine looks almost identical but it's a Carter P60504. I got it based on recommendations here. I put a gauge on it when I installed it, and it was putting out right at 3.5lbs. Been on for two years now, with no issues.

You can take a smooth running stock engine and give it a mild intake manifold leak and it will sound and idle like it has a cam in it.
With a dial indicator you can measure intake and exhaust lift and duration at the rocker arm, but you need to know what rocker arm ratio's are though.

Topic Replies: 5

I've been searching and searching and couldn't find any info on this. I am running a 1500cc with a Solex 30/31 carb, 009 distributor. Valves adjusted to spec, new points, condenser, coil. I've timed it at 7.5 BTDC and 28 degrees at 3500RPM. It has the "flat spot."

I've tried everything. The accelerator pump stream goes right where it should. I found that the only way to make this engine run great it advancing the timing to 12BTDC at idle which brings the advance to about 32 degrees at 3500RPM.

First question, is this safe? Also, my mechanic as well as my old german neighbor down the street who was a VW mechanic for 30 years both say that it sounds like it has a cam in it. Probably an Engle 100 or 110 but i guess i'll never know unless i take the thing apart. Is there separate timing procedures for an engine with a mild cam in it?

Thanks

Get rid of the roller pedal and you'll find its a lot nicer to drive.

Check to make sure the cable is straight when it attaches to the pedal linkage. If it's being pulled to the side it puts extra strain on the cable end and the strands break right where they meet the cable end. JUST like in your picture!

Also make sure the cable is able to move freely and rotate in the hole. If it binds and doesn't move freely, again it will break the strands right at the cable end.

Wolfsburg West has everything you need to replace your after market crap with decent OEM type parts. You'll find they work much better and you'll be able to drive the car more and enjoy it rather then fixing the cool after market stuff over and over again.

Your problem is NOT the link pin shims! Its the worn king and link pins!

The shims serve a different function.

You state this has been happening over a period of time. As things wear out, you are seeing the results at the steering wheel.

Worn king pins allow the steering knuckle to move in ways its not supposed to. That movement changes the toe setting. When the toe setting on one side changes more then the toe setting on the other side, the steering wheel changes position.

Your front end is WORN OUT! You need to have the king & link pins redone and while you are at it check the tie rod ends for play and wear. If there is play in the tie rod ends, they can NOT be adjusted – they are worn out and they need to be replaced.

You set toe by adjusting the tie rods. Make them longer you get toe out, shorter you get toe in.

Your front mount transmission mount is bad. When you let the clutch up and the drive train starts to put power to the ground, the engine/transmission assembly starts to rotate up in the front and down in the rear.

That actually pulls the throttle open without you touching the gas pedal.

Replacing that mount with the engine in the car can be done, but its so simple to remove the engine that its just silly not to. Pulling the engine will make the job of replacing that front mount much easier. it will also allow you to replace the rear mounts at the same time
Yeah, my own fan shroud-mounted external oil cooler in Arizona on my 1835 engine since 1976 must NOT be working !!! I guess I didn't make those two dozen trips across the desert to California and back, in mid-day and mid-summer at 75 -80 mph. And I typically used the dealer-added AC with the power-hungry Tecumseh compressor too. I do use hood standoffs and a 1970 sedan 2-vent engine lid.

Yes, I did have to replace the flexible oil hoses after 31 years, the ends got hard and a little oil was seeping out.

We did the same thing for our 63 bug. I can't remember the wiring but you need to use a relay and have it wired so it only functions with the key on. The in-line thermostat can be attached to the cooler but I can't remember if it goes on the intake side or the out side. The cooler plumbing will be part of the external filter and the fan will kick on when the oil reaches 180 degrees.

Looks like a Ford starter relay. Do a search for "hot start relays" and you will probably find your answer. I have never used one, but a lot of folks do.

The cooler has two ports, an "in" & and "out", but there's nothing to tell which is which. Does it matter as long as it's connected? Then there's two wires, a blue one & a black one. I take it the black is ground and the blue is power? Where do I connect those to? Finally, I have a in-line thermostat, where does that go in the sequence? This is why I asked for a step by step or actual pictures that unfortunately isn't covered in the video. Thanks guys.
Do I need to cut these down & if so how close should the top of the bump stop be to the bit that hangs above it?

I haven't had much luck cutting them down. They aren't completely solid, so once you cut the top of, they kind of lose their usefulness. First time I bottomed out on the ones I cut down, they just split like a banana. Of course, those were the original ones, so they may have just been really old and dry . You may have better luck with fresh ones.

For the braking system we will be using a German FTE dual master cylinder from WW. I spent a month trying to find a new reservoir to sit on top. I ended up buying one from VW for about $130 I tried every vendor online and they all stated they could not source one. The local VW dealer showed 3 available in the U.S. I bit the bullet in the name of safety. I will be using an original 66 reservoir in the stock location to fill the dual reservoir sitting on top the master cylinder. The entire braking system is being replaced with German parts from WW. All of the replacement suspension components have also been sourced from WW. I destroyed my pedal assembly trying to remove the pin from the clutch pedal but was able to source an original pedal assembly at a local swap meet. Have the rebuild parts for the pedal assembly so it should be like new when we finish the pan. We are using Boge oil filled shocks, German bearings and ball joints for the front end and tie rods. The steering box is original and appears within spec at this point. Pics to follow
Finally feel like we are moving forward!

This a first in several ways. In my late 40's, and
this is my first VW, and my first project car.

My initial dream of taking it out this summer with
my wife wine tasting in the Sonoma hills has
faded away. It won't be ready for that THIS summer.

I'm looking at having it running by the end of the year.

I'll post more pictures as notable progress is made.

Sonoma is overrated anyways! Keep spending your time sitting in the car at night making "Vrooom Vroooom" noises for entertainment. Much cheaper than actually filling the gas tank up! haha

It has been a little over a year since I updated this post. It has been a slow year as we have been deciding which way to go with the car not to mention three boys in sports and my job. I have been slowly acquiring OG metal, 66 only parts, and German replacement parts. The body and pan have been separated, I did not build my one man lift. I found more rust than I expected, but I told my boys this just means more opportunity to hone welding skills. We have finally found the end of the rust and have the majority of the replacement parts for the pan and body. In the next few weeks we will start our upward path of restoring the pan, and by the end of the summer when the heat here in Florida subsides we will be ready to tackle the body. We have enough replacement parts to keep us busy and I will post the latest pics soon. I will make sure we update as we move forward and sometimes backwards.

So I was driving home from the gas station today and my throttle kept getting stuck. The problem is that. It's only when the clutch is let off and in gear... Example: In neutral or clutch pushed in and in gear, the trottle is fine, revs up and down nicely. However, once it is in gear and i start to release the clutch pedal (to get going), if I press the gas more then 1/4 of the way down, I start driving uncontrollably with no effect of using the gas pedal. Now the throttle sticks until the engine revs up to 5k, or until I push the clutch pedal in. However, if the engine is still at a higher rpm, when i go to shift gears, I push in the clutch, shift to 2, or 3rd. Release the clutch, the engine will start revving up again. Again!!! This is all without using the gas pedal...

Now. I raised the car up on jackstands. Got the back wheels off the ground. Try to imitate how I was driving it to get it again to drive out of control, yet everything was fine. I went through all the gears and the throttle did not get stuck once (maybe because there was no load on the tires)?

One thing that I did notice though is that when I lifted the tires off the ground. I can take both of my rear tires, and pull the axles in and out about 1/4 of an inch. Only one side had a loose bearing cover. Working on buying the parts to repair the loose axles, however, I'm doubting it is going to fix my weird throttle problem.....Anyon e have any suggestions?

Looks like you have to adjust your choke to open up fully.

Did you connect up the wire to the choke?

Did you oil up the throttle shaft on both sides of the carb??

The return spring on the carb that you are pointing out in your video. It looks like it is binding up and not letting the throttle plate get pulled back into position. You see how on your video the spring is staying slightly extended. That is wrong. It should look like the picture below. if you get it to keep from binding up the car will return to its normal idle provided nothing else is going on. You may have the spring on backwards so that it is getting jammed in the linkage or maybe your throttle cable is binding up somewhere. But my guess would be you have the spring on wrong since it was ok before you changed the carb out.

I bought my first '61 bug back in January. The PO put a 2007 cc engine in it, and it's a blast to drive! I had a 74 Thing about 9 years ago with a stock 1600 cc engine, slow, but really fun. You can imagine how much more fun my bug is! It has one of the dip stick replacement temperature gauge, and it got hot on me last weekend after a 40 minute easy drive (no faster than 55 mph). Had to pull over and let it cool, but made it home safely. I have now installed the cooler to the underside of the parcel shelf in the rear but that's all. My bug has a full flow oil filter behind the rear tire. I also have an in-line thermostat and not sure where that goes. So you see I'm in a pickle here, not sure what to do next. The cooler has 1 tiny line diagram, but nothing too specific.

who makes a better quality cable? Most shops I've dealt with have one brand in stock depending on who they purchased from, usually from brazil or china

They are -6 but I've since replaced the regulator. It came with a setup I bought and I never liked it. I just used it for a mockup waiting for my other one to come in. I wouldn't recommend the regulator it felt cheap and just by the shitty construction I didn't want to use it.

To tell if its lower I would say mount the tires and see if its lower. But what I find interesting is how the bolt for the rear shock was installed backwards when the car doesn't look like it has had the body off in a very long time.

I don't know whats going on with these Empi Universal Throttle cables but I go through one every 2 months. They snap at the cable as it exits the dogleg end. I have a '59 pedal assembly with a cheap roller pedal (previous owner). I'm running a 40hp with a pict28 and carb spacer for alternator clearance which is why I buy the longer HD cable. The the weak point is where the stranded cable is wedged into the dogleg. I don't remember having this many issues with cables in any of my cars. Are these cables garbage or does my roller pedal look like its pulling the cable outward or something. I'm thinking about converting to a stock pedal, but I have to figure out if this is a cable issue or a roller pedal issue first.

The factory only specs what the unladen setting of the rear spring plates are, and the ride height is a product of that. Short of measuring those, all you can do is get a relative comparison beside a like model car. There should roughly be about 1"-2" of distance between the wheel opening of the fender above the tire diameter.

Photo is not the best angle but the spindles don't look like they are dropped, the speedo cable would be ~2 1/2" higher if so. Here are some photos to compare them to...

Pull the negative cable off the battery and put a test light between the cable and hte post, if it lights up you have a draw. Start pulling fuses until the light goes ouot. then start looking at hte things that are on that fuse for a draw. At least you don't have to wait half an hour for all the computers to go to sleep to check for a draw like I haveto do on some new cars......

The wrist pins should be a pretty tight fit in the pistons. Aluminum has a much higher rate of expansion than bronze or steel. In the factory manuals, they often show the use of a heating element/tool to expand the piston slightly on assembly and dis-assembly as well.
Having them checked at a machine shop is a good idea, but you should take along the correct specs for them to go by. If you don't have a Bentley manual, you can find the proper tolerance and specs here...

On the smooth hubcaps, I've heard the 356 guys just re-chrome the Chinese re-pops and sell them as quality reproductions. They are about $30 each from Pelican parts.

First thing you need to do is figure out why the throttle isn't closing like it should. Main causes that come to mind would be a binding throttle cable (you can check this by disconnecting the cable at the carb to see if the throttle snaps shut properly), the accelerator pump linkage is binding on the generator, or the nuts that hold the linkages on the throttle shaft are overtorqued (least likely, but possible). Until you can get the carb to reliably fully close at idle, you can't really do much else.

Car makers will often plan up to four or five years ahead for that years production of cars, and VW was/is no exception. The US market was/is a major factor in what went on the cars when. Hazard lights were a requirement for all '66 US cars, but you don't hear much about them. They were well aware of what needed to be done to a particular model for compliance years in advance.

There is little official information to back it up, but my theory is a lot of the changes were made to comply with the impending '68 US Federal safety regulations. Things such as dual circuit braking system, visible door lock buttons, flush inside door release handles, un-covered headlights, reverse lights and vertical mounting of the rear license plate are prime examples of this. There were also more stringent anti-theft requirements coming in '68, thus the new double profile ignition/door lock cylinders/ keys are an answer to those too.

As for the revised/lowered rear chassis settings, remember that guy Ralph Nader? No doubt this was done to address the then current issue of ill handling swing axle equipped cars.

I believe the 1500cc engine was simply their response to the horsepower race of the '60's. Many period magazine road tests of the time were asking "how long can VW keep selling these cars?", and more power did a lot to quiet their voices.

The 12v electrical system was only changed in the US market, and again that might suggest they were trying to make the car more user friendly for buyers in the States.

You can test for battery drain as described on Jim Mais' invaluable site here -

http://www.speedyjim.net/schem/drain.gif

FWIW, I measured a mere 40mA draw on my (6V) system which isn't a lot but took a new(ish) Optima battery from starting right up on the first turn of the key to struggling to turn over within a week or so of the car sitting idle. The numbers suggest this shouldn't be the case but there you go I remedied the cause of the small drain (got the residual current down to 6mA) and everything seems much better.

<img src='http://robrien.orconhosting.net.nz/VW/P1010237.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://robrien.orconhosting.net.nz/VW/P1010237.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

12V electrickery is probably a lot more forgiving
Every time I get new moon caps (no logo, just smoooth...oh my) for my '61 Beetle, the chrome peels off within a couple months! And mostly my car just sits in the garage under a car cover! I've purchased 6 extra caps so far! I can't find a higher quality cap...all I see at the various online stores is a $10-14 hub cap. A local chrome plating shop quoted me several hundred dollars to strip my current ones & refinish them.

Isn't there ANY happy medium here? Does anyone know where I can get higher quality moon caps for my girl???

Brad. Thanks man. I went out on a limb and tried the chrome powder coat. I think it's cool, and think it should look good under the finished car. It's a little over powering as it sits now.

Every year of VW has the "one year only part syndrome" Seems the 67 has more. Glad I do not have one anymore.

No, unless the radio is malfunctioning. With a good battery it would take at least a couple months. With these cars there are only a couple things that can cause a draw. Dome light, alternator/regulator, headlights left on. My guess is probably a battery
