good to see you're getting along so well, despite your trials and tribulations.

Well, the old wbx finally is past any band aids. I bought my van in Dec of 2011, and I have put 12,000 everyday miles on it. When I bought it, it was getting 14mpg, ran ok, had a Swiss cheese exhaust, 1/2 a tail pipe, horrible spark plugs, weeping water jacket seals, etc, etc. Took it on a 1000 mile road trip, where I blew out the slightly S shaped coolant pipe from the passenger Cylinder head to the coolant tower. At the time, I thought it was just an old hose...

In order to get home, I "morymobbed" my pressure cap and have run it that way ever since. The coolant overflow had a touch of slippery brown liquid in it when I got home. I started wondering if I had a blown cylinder head gasket instead of an old hose. The motor has always used a little coolant. "Maybe it's just leaking a little somewhere," I convinced myself. I got 19-20 mpg on the trip, with 7 passengers, AC on and bikes on the back.

As the time and miles have worn on, I have continued diligently top off coolant, check the oil, replace maintenance parts, and enjoy the van. I upgraded the throttle switch with a VSM; last month I even pulled the trigger on a TenCent/Rocky Mountain Westy exhaust. As of last fill up, the van was running very strong and my in town gas mileage jumped to over 18 (an all time commuting high - 11 miles each way, 45mph roads with 5-10 stop lights). Then came the beginning of the end last week...

I drove all the way to work when I realized my kids car seats - that need to be in m wife's car- were still in my van. Crap!!! I told my boss and headed for home in a rush. I always drive with a firm foot; it was a little firmer as I rushed back home, then back to work. The van ran like a champ; I was feeling very good about it overall. When I came out to the van after an especially long day, there was a large puddle of coolant under then water pump. "Awesome." I checked the coolant tank and decided to drive it home. The drive was uneventful and I was hopeful (more vanagon self-delusions) that it was just a fluke overflow burp. When I came around the back of the van upon arriving home, I could see the dripping from the weep hole. I went inside and ordered a new water pump and engine reseal kit. I went to start it up today; it fired up quick. Unfortunately, the coolant was quick to start dripping AND the oil was quick to start filling up the coolant tanks. And that brings me to now:

I will be either rebuilding or replacing the WBX with the help of Rocky Jennings's parts or longblock.

If I rebuild, I will be buying his performance AMC heads, port matched intake, and rebuilt rods. I'm debating on 96mm p&c's; any feedback back would be welcome.

If I buy a longblock, I am very, very torn between the 2.2 and the stroked 2.3.

The money difference is about $2,000 between the total rebuild cost and the 2.2. The time and anxiety savings with the longblock is definitely weighing on me.

So, what does everyone think? Rebuild? Longblock? Conversion is out. My skills mechanically are not an issue and I have all the tools I need.

Well, I'll post what my set up has been doing...
I have the 40w panel and 20w panel wired in parallel, and the most I've seen them put out is about 3 amps. This is in full sun, about 75º ambient temps, and with the connected 12v 115ah battery at about 3/4 full.

That's the only way I've found to judge maximum output, since as r39o says, the controller will put out less amps when just float charging a full battery.

I did do what I think is a decent test of the system though...
With my Truckfridge TF41 set to 36º, I left it running in the van for about a week. The van was parked in a spot where it got about 5 hours of full sun per day...so not a ton, but maybe close to an average situation.

The TF41 seemed to pull about 3 amps on startup and then about 2-2.5amps while running. At night, the battery always read 12.6 or 12.7v.
After 7 or 8 days I pulled the fridge and brought it inside the house. Within 3-4 hours or solar charging, the battery was full.

So I'd say the 60w panel setup will just about keep up with a TF and other minor draws (stereo, lighting, etc). And if I were parked somewhere with 7 or 8 hours of full sun/day, I bet it would have topped off the battery every day.

I'd feel comfortable running the fridge 24/7 for a couple weeks at a pop, as long as the panels get decent sun exposure each day.

Anyway, those are my real-world findings! Nice when the "real-world" is pretty close to what things say they should be on paper.

Howdy,

I just passed NJ Inspection on my newly rebuilt 2.1L WBX engine.

Here are the readings.

At IDLE:

HC ppm - 19
CO% - 0.00
CO2% - 12.8
O2% - 2.7

AT 2500 RPM

HC ppm - 26
CO% - 0.10
CO2% - 14.8
O2% - 0.2

Although it passed with flying colors, well below the allowed ranges, I just want to make sure I'm not running too rich or too lean. As I have no idea what I am looking at with these numbers.

If you have any idea, please let me know. Also how would you recommend me correcting it with turning of the air box screw if needed.

Thanks

If jumpering the 3 pin connector with it unplugged from the switch gets you a high and a low speed then what is left is the switch. Easy enough to change. Be sure to use the later switch spec'd for 2.1.

What about A/C? Are you using it during these times?
But driving around, it goes straight to high speed. I've listened closely for the quieter low speed...it never goes on.

I did a Bostig conversion a few years back but the low speed on the fan never worked with the WBX. I'm in the process of enabling the factory AC, I think the low speed on the radiator fan will be needed? I concur... the switch!
"It's a bit heavy". Can you define that better?

Heavy for a teenager?
Heavy for a 30 yr old contractor?
Heavy for a middle aged office worker?
Heavy for your Wife by herself?

Is is not so much heavy as it is awkward for one man to carry?

It's a really nice box and provides food for further thought.
I'm just wondering how a "gently" aging couple would do with it..........

While the engine was out I thought it would be a good time to repaint the bay.

I settled on truck 2 part truck bedliner. In the past, I've sprayed bedliner on with a Schutz gun but this time decided to roll it on. After a quick prep with degreaser, I scuffed and wire wheeled the sheetmetal to give the coating something to hang onto, then just rolled the material on. There are a lot of little nooks in the area above the tank and behind the springs and so I used a brush a bit as well.

Add 2 hose barbs and a piece of clear tubing to check levels.

Early diesel tanks seem beefier, and used a metal pressure cap, might work if you can find one.

Ok, little time to do anything today.

Went into the car, it turned on perfectly.

Tested voltage at the alternator. 14.5
Tested voltage at the starting battery 12.9
Tested voltage at the house batteries (connected through a blue seas ACR) 2 6v golf cart batteries - 14.1

How does the starting battery which has a lead to the house batteries have less voltage than the house batteries?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I can confirm the doable-ness of the semuc road. With caveats that is must be dry, (late rainy season damage may pose an issue), and that the driver be of steady constitution and the vehicle be in good shape.

You know, that's a thought...

I got a tray for under the van like the one some vendor here sells or is planning to sell for $600, made for $50 in Mexico. So I'm sure I could get this done probably for around the price of a new plastic tank.

The problem with those is that it's not trivial to check the level... Call me old fashioned, but I like that I can see through the plastic tank and have an idea of how high the coolant level is there. I know there's a sensor, but I like the double checking...

You should definitely replace it. I just had to pull my syncro trans out to replace mine because I was too lazy to do it when I had the trans out three months ago.

Dont forget the felt seal!

You might as well throw a rear main seal in too, since you're in there anyway.

The trans had been rebuilt along with the engine by the previous owner. They only had 3000 mile on them when I bought and the clutch began slipping almost immediately. The main seal is fine, no oil leaking. I will check the pilot bearing as I said. Thank you.

I was going to suggest the top shocks for your roof but it looks like you already have them.
Can you tell the size of your tires, and what springs and shocks you are running? I'm looking to do the same with my 16" GW wheels.
Thanks ,and safe and fun travels.
mark

I went with the 215 70 16 package that Go Westy was selling. I know it's possible to go a size bigger, but I didn't want to change the gearing that much, especially when I planned to run with the stock 2.1 VW engine for a year before doing the engine conversion. I like the current gearing with that size tire, although the 2.5 engine is new, so I'll know a lot more after my big summer trip. Going from 14 to 16 wheels makes a huge difference. I replaced the springs and bumpers before the wheels and they really made the stock 14 wheels look puny. I remember at the time that the new wheels and tires looked huge until I compared them with another modern truck, and then they looked “normal.”

The springs are the Go Westy 2-inch springs that I think are on sale now. I had a broken spring, so had to replace them, and at the time there weren’t any other choices. I was not looking to add any to the height, but that was all that was available. The shocks are Old Man Emus, that I think I ordered from Van Café.

Thanks everyone for words of wisdom, humor and advice. I thought I'd give an update. State Farm allowed the high retail value from NADA classics of $9700. Which seemed fair to me, as I don't have a showroom condition van. Then I got an appraisal at one of their approved body shops for $2092 to repair the damage. This was using a rear hatch I found in El Paso for $150. I hadn't caught on to letting the body shop quote the highest estimate, but, live and learn.

The rear door I found was at the wonderful shop we take our van to in El Paso, but I drove down to look at it anyway. The door was good and they even swapped it out for me.

The hatch is two tone, the bottom half a mustard color, but the top is such a close match to my van, its amazing. It really doesn't look half bad.

So I'll get a check for around $1845, and be able to get not only the rear hatch painted, but probably my front end, that we rattle canned last year, and my off color driver's side door. Then will order the go Westy basic black bumpers, I think.

The pilot bearing and felt seal are only like $5. You should definitely replace it. I just had to pull my syncro trans out to replace mine because I was too lazy to do it when I had the trans out three months ago.

Dont forget the felt seal!

You might as well throw a rear main seal in too, since you're in there anyway.

Just a heads up. None of the forest service gates in north lake Tahoe are open yet. Not sure about south lake but I doubt it as they have more snow than we do. The ranger I talked to said they are waiting until every last inch of snow has melted before they open them this year.

I camped on the Carson river outside of Markleeville last weekend. Great free camping. Spotted a red Doka and a few other syncros doing the same thing.

My wife and I designed it in collaboration with a woodworking buddy of ours. He did all the construction on it. It's a bit heavy, but works really, really well. The width of the chuckbox is the same as the depth of the rear cargo area in the van, so it fits nicely into the right-half of the cargo area. It could also ride behind the front passenger seat.

To go with it, we browsed, shopped and tried nearly every camping cookware set out there. In the end, we decided on the TexSport set and are very happy. We ended up buying both the Scouter and Trailblazer, which all nest together "almost" perfectly. Individually, each set is a perfect nest. When both sets are combined, there is one pot that doesn't fit perfect. Great quality for camp cookware.

When I was an undergrad in Michigan, I wrote a letter to the head of Oldsmobile asking for a job. Changed my life and I held the best job at GM 3 years later, then again at Lexus after that. It all starts with asking...

RE wires. A lot of European bulbs have a "city light" in the reflector for urban areas where it is required to turn off low beams. This small bulb then illuminates the headlamps dimly for safer driving without providing glare the authorities are trying to reduce.

Are you going to replace the pilot bearing as well?
My clutch is fine but occasionally experience not being able to shift into first or second from a stop as if the pilot bearing is damaged.

Once I tear it apart I'll be better able to see what is going on

Yes, new pilot bearing going in if needed. Otherwise I will just lube it up.

John,

Sounds like the classic main bearing loosening in the housing. First thing I'd do in your situation is drain the trans into a clear container. It's a pain to refill, so have a plan for that. Funnel duct taped to clear tubing, clear tubing taped to van's window and pour into funnel with lower end of tube in trans filler hole. Be sure you can loosen the filler plug before draining.

I suspect you'll find silvery flakes in the oil as it drains and the drain should have a magnet that will likely be covered with metal flakes as well. Take a picture of the magnet so some of the experts can see it - a lot have done it here on Samba to get comments.

Exactly what my trans sounded like before I rebuilt it.
A forum repeat it seems, but I've never seen the clips. Looks like they will have good footage of the Syncro mechanicals.

Nice job!

Are you going to replace the pilot bearing as well?

My clutch is fine but occasionally experience not being able to shift into first or second from a stop as if the pilot bearing is damaged.

Once I tear it apart I'll be better able to see what is going on

I have a similar issue after the Soltice trip to Moab. It was a mystery at first to hear a clunk while driving and couldn't really tell where it was coming from, then a distinct 'plunk' after stopping. The bottom of my tank was sucking in a bit then releasing which I figured out after sitting there waiting for it to go plunk.

I read through this great post and did some tests, but now have a question. How hard should it be to blow through the canister?

1. At first I just undid the bottom tube and tried blowing through the canister with the other hoses connected and the gas cap off. It took a fair amount of mouth pressure to move air through it more that I would 'think' a breather system should require.

2. Then I removed both top hoses and plugged the small one that normally connects to the hose going to the front and I tried blowing though the large one, same thing pretty restricted, but air does move with a fair amount of mouth pressure.

3. When I just try to blow through the tube that goes to the front, it is also fairly hard to blow through. If I suck, it seems easier.

4. If I take my figure off the smaller top nipple and blow through the upper large one, it flows freely out the small one. This is all with gas cap removed.

I am trying to figure out what this is telling me. I am guessing the canister is clogged but don't really know how a new one feels or how free the line to the front should flow. Can anyone tell me what I should expect? Thanks

OK, time for our monthly update on this thread... (anyone still reading?)

We spent about a month in Guatemala, and it was great!

After the first few days, we were in Quetzaltenango, on the west of the country. It was a Thursday, and looking around the web I found out that that weekend was Bug Camp in Cobán, closer to the north of Guatemala:

http://fuscacoban.blogspot.com/2010/06/el-bug-camp.html

I got in touch with the organizer, but just to say hi mostly, not thinking we would make it there. He insisted we had to go, and ended up convincing me. In the drive there I broke my rule of never driving at night, and paid for it: after a speed bump taken at full speed, the van died. It turned out to be the ignition switch, but until I figured that out we had spent one night at a gas station, the first time in our trip we do that.

Bug camp was awesome, and we made a lot of friends, among whom was Pancho, the organizer guy who convinced me to go. Here are some pics:

It was excellent, and we ended up staying in Coban for a few more days, in a cabin belonging to Pancho the organizer.

Then we went the treacherous road to Semuc Champey. I spent the night before researching that road, and it seems like the only VW people with blogs who made it there were BodesWell, Bumfuzzle and some guy with a Syncro who broke his oil pan in the attempt. All the locals said to only go with a 4WD vehicle. Anyway, we went, and made it without issues, even though it was scary at times--there are some hills you go down on the way there that you think there's no way you will make back up...

<img src='http://www.vanenvan.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/20130427-P1080604.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://www.vanenvan.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/20130427-P1080604.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

Just after we did it, I found about two other Vanagons who also made it at around the same time: our friends from andamosdevagos on their 86 (with a Tencent engine, I was envious even though my GW 2.2 works beautifully!) and Drive Chuck Drive.

We then made it back to Antigua, and met some family who were coming to visit from California for a week. I got a care package of a brand new distributor, spark plugs, another ignition switch, and brake pads. Yay!

Going to lake Atitlan we crossed a river:

<img src='http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8400/8709836505_31d428836e_z.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8400/8709836505_31d428836e_z.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

and then we camped by the lake, it was spectacular:

<img src='http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8113/8710960250_6695380716_z.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8113/8710960250_6695380716_z.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

Now we've been over a week in El Salvador. A few days in the beach, and now in this little colonial town, where I discovered that my coolant expansion tank was leaking. Read about all that in my other thread.

It's not a bad place to break down:

<img src='http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8278/8755858780_3ff6d6f838_z.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8278/8755858780_3ff6d6f838_z.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />
<img src='http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2860/8755878630_3a80ce6975_z.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2860/8755878630_3a80ce6975_z.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

Now I'm hoping that my expansion tank patching abilities are enough to get us out of here and into Honduras. A new tank will be installed either in July when I come back to Panama from SF, or maybe a bit earlier, if a good friend who is planning to meet us in Costa Rica in June can make it and doesn't mind getting some cookies from Van Cafe.

You can see more about our trip in our blog: http://www.vanenvan.com

After driving the van today, I think the tranny is shifting from 1st to 3rd and skipping 2nd gear. It starts in 1st and revs high, then shifts directly to 3rd. Would this be 2nd gear brake band related?

The muffler is a Gibson 789400S. I should have just gone straight pipe. lol
It was a "honey it has a muffler on it! " Relocating the diverter valve away from the hot turbo to increase its longevity, it's supposed to give a better part throttle response and colder intake temps. The Mez pump has a little whine to it. I could dampen it a bit more. I wired it up off of the alternator through a relay. So when the alt is on (warning light out) the pump is running.
Upgraded coil packs and ICM delete parts are on the way.

Our 84 has a (brown) steel dash. The only padding is right along the edge and plastic is limited to vents, ashtray lid, dash pod, etc.

So far (3 decades of sun & fun) that design seems bullet-proof. Too bad they didn't quit while they were ahead.

I will reiterate the importance of disconnecting the four multi-pin engine connectors that sit very close to the EGR valve, cleaning them thoroughly, applying a contact enhancer, and carefully re-connecting. To be clear, I am not talking about the connection at the ECU itself, although the same procedure used on it would not hurt. The four connectors are exposed to the elements both in the factory SVX set up, and even moreso in the Vanagon SVX conversion.

Do your best to check for vacuum leaks. On a Vanagon conversion, the brake booster vacuum supply hose can be a hack job and would create a large vacuum leak if that hose is compromised.

If the above does not assist, then try these items:

1. AFM: do the factory service manual (FSM) check (part 2-7, page 68 )
2. EGR solenoid valve (FSM page 84 part 2-7)
3. EGR temp sensor (FSM part 2-7, page 100)
4. EGR system ( page 104)
5. Throttle position sensor (part 2-7, page 78
6. Coolant temp sensor (Part 2-7, page 65)

In recommending that you check the above, I am proceeding based on the symptoms you describe.

Finally, note that the ECU shuts down the fuel pump (using the fuel pump relay) if it senses voltage is below 10 volts. Bad connections and bad grounds can give a faulty voltage reading to the ECU.

Glad you found a charger that will work. You'll be fine running it without the manual switch, I just wouldn't leave the charger plugged in all the time to maintain the batteries. It'll be fine for camping.

If you were to install the manual switch though, it isn't that big of a deal. None of the battery load goes through it so it's just a light duty switch, nothing massive.

Couldn't find the right size at Wally-World (where I usually get my batteries) so had to go to O'Reilly's.

Take a ruler along -- I found not all batteries in the same group were really the same size. The height is critical and some were just a skoosh taller than others (and too tall for my comfort).

What you use for an aux battery will depend very much on where you plan to put it.
With trying to pull off a makeshift repair there is no guarantees. You might
even just let it be for now and run with it tomorrow Keep the amount I'd heat/cool cycles down to a minimum so it will last as long as you need it to.
I tried to do some research on what vehicles you would have parts
access to and could be adapted but the specs are not detailed
enough to really determine compatibility. Your gonna have to
wing it with the locals.

Yep. It's so hot here, and the roads are so steep up and down that I don't think it matters really how many heating cycles I go through...

Anyway--I'm in contact with a VW mechanic not terribly far away, who is checking to see if he has or can find a tank that will work. I guess I can always get a tank without the sensor hole and keep an eye on the temp needle, which I do constantly in any case.

Hello, we have a 1993 Eurovan and the turn signal switch is broken. It also controls the high beam and the cruise control.
The part number is 701 953 513B 01C. Volkswagen discontinued this part and nobody seems to have one in stock anymore anywhere, not even the classic parts division in Germany.
I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has an idea of what we can do?
I truly would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you in advance

Pulled the transmission on my 89 Westfalia to do my first clutch job. I had been dreading this job for quite some time, but it was not bad at all.
So, I have a new Sachs PP, disk and TO bearing, took the flywheel in and had it turned at a machine shop to specs. Purchased new boots for the axles and a new boot for the shift rod.
Cleaned up the bell housing today as it was full of black dust and then gave the whole transmission a bath. Cleaned the engine behind the flywheel of the same black dust and I am now ready to put it all back together tomorrow.
Woohoo!
Old TO bearing.

Hopefully it hold but if it don't just run it vented and watch your levels.

I recently did the tank on our 87 2WD. There aren't really any hidden costs, so it's just a matter of adding up what you decide to replace. I replaced about everything except the straps and vapor tank stuff (only replace hoses on them). Most parts came from Van-Cafe.

Van-Cafe:
Tank - $174.85
Sending unit - $59.95
Tank re-seal kit - $109.50 (aluminum fitting type)

FLAPS:
Some extra hose clamps - a few dollars
Replacement hose for filler neck breather line - about $10
Paint and bed liner (spray can) - about $25

So, maybe close the $400 if you replace most things. A lot less if you don't need to replace the tank. Don't know on the straps. If you are not having any fuel problems, and your tank doesn't leak when you fill it up, you might want to just replace the rusty straps, and call it good for now.

My tank leaked when you filled it, but I could have fixed that with a new cross over tube. I wanted the peace of mind of knowing things were new, but it wasn't absolutely necessary.

I've looked and searched, FAQ quide, site:thesamba etc etc. BTW the "camping equipment list" in the FAQs seems broken. At one time someone had worked up a comprehensive list of what was in their Westfalia. Parts, camping gear, essential items and such. I loved that list, printed up my own added my own preferences. Now its gone. Dunno what happened to it and cant find it on TheSamba (grrrrrrr). As I remember I stumbled on it, lost the thread and it took me a long while to find it again so I don't think it was in one of the stickys...

Since the OP is asking about a syncro(i assume same van as other thread) rust is a non-issue.
The tank is worth pulling for peace of mind that you will never have to do it again and since the tranny is out now is the best time.
Swapping out new rollover valves, new sending unit, new fuel lines and removing debris collected from gas pumps over the decades is worth the effort.

Break it down...84 so by norm not a Syncro and if was a converted

to a Syncro they would be bragging that it was..
Issues with 3 and 4th makes it a manual...

Seriously though it should be mandatory that its in your signature

OK. After my last fix (epoxy, then a "washer" made of a plastic from a jug around the sender connector, fixed in with even more epoxy), it seems to work for now. I turned the engine on and run it until the radiator fan cycled once. I'm now letting it cool, but there's no leaks.

I'll cycle a few more times today, hoping the leak doesn't come back. Hopefully this will allow me to drive until I get a new tank...

I can do jun 28-30

Am also wondering if some people with mon-fri jobs would like to use the holiday weekend of the 4th. You tell me what days you have off.

Jun 28 is a Friday. I'm guessing the mon-fri volks would need to meet on Saturday instead. Please post your availability preferences here. Lets make a plan happen.

Nice - good planning on the housing ports. As noted, some of the stuff I typed quickly will be tended to by AA or is eliminated if you change starters, etc. Sounds like you'll be well setup. AA will also be using a 3/4 slider that solves the issue, so no worries there - your trans is in the same hands I'd give mine to.

DG 1.9 was an option up to 1991...
My 1985 ambulance has a 1.9 DG engine on it but also the early cooling system with front mounted thermostat...

That 1.9 engine is DG and rated at 78 HP, carburetor.

Supposedly used for several years in Syncros, along with the 2.1 engines and 1.6TD.

I have found an Syncro for sale, here in Europe, that has an 1,9 litres gasoline engine.

I did not know that there was these 1,9 engines in T3's.
Thought they just had MV and DJ 2,1litres engines.

If this is correct, what name is that engine and how much horsepowers do they have?.............

There is what looks like the differential pan; it has 10 bolts and the CV joints come in just above the pan. This whole area is thick with black sticky wet crud. So this is full of gear oil. The axle and CV boots look dry and relatively clean. Is it common for the pan gasket to leak? I'm thinking I should service this. I'll have to spend some time cleaning before I can even find the 17mm allen head drain and fill.

Just ahead of the differential is another thing that looks like a reservoir with a tube going into it (dipstick tube?). I am guessing this is the ATF reservoir? This looks clean.

Thanks everyone.

Hello Samba Forum,

I have an 84 Westy with a loud transmission whine mainly in third and forth gear. The trans has around 40,000 miles on it. More pronounced with a load on the vehicle. Anything I can do other than replace it. First gear is fine second gear has a slight wine also.

I added slick 50 to the gearbox about a year ago when I could start to hear a slight wine developing.

Thank you,
Any advice on whether or not to dive into the tank and what the total cost (ballpark) would be for those who've done it?

Hi everyone!

I have found an Syncro for sale, here in Europe, that has an 1,9 litres gasoline engine.

I did not know that there was these 1,9 engines in T3's.
Thought they just had MV and DJ 2,1litres engines.

If this is correct, what name is that engine and how much horsepowers do they have?

Thanx to all people who take their time to help me out here!

No adjustment that I am aware of; I had the same problem once tried bleeding without luck and found one of the two bolts on the clutch slave (engine compartment) that was missing a nut and when I pushed the pedal the slave raised away from mount. Replaced nut torqued and result was strong pedal. Of course you can bleed but check all the usual spots for weeping i.e. pedal cylinder, clutch slave.

That makes it sound like the switch. If jumpering the 3 pin connector with it unplugged from the switch gets you a high and a low speed then what is left is the switch. Easy enough to change. Be sure to use the later switch spec'd for 2.1.

What about A/C? Are you using it during these times?

Can't do it that way because I need to take off the intake manifold to access all the vacuum stuff. Subaru was trying to hard at aesthetics on this engine, so they hid everything. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I think I'm going to actually look at the electrical connections to the fuel pump first though.....but I don't have the Bentley yet, or even an owners manual. Could someone be so kind as to inform me of the general location of the fuel pump and fuel relay(s)?

I'm barking up this tree because my symptoms very closely match Vanagon Syndrome. According to: http://www.benplace.com/vanagon_intermittent_syndrome.htm
the one thing that could still cause the dreaded syndrome in a subie repower is electrical/fuel delivery.
