There is a cupped washer that goes on axle 1st then thecv, would keep cv against clip. If u don't have an old stock one i would put a flat one on, may take some fitting to get snug as u will be fitting one from a hardware supply. Know anyone around that owns/works on vw's for a washer?

Your 'Sears mechanic(??) don't have a clue about a WBX alt other than to just replace it. Simple, remove 2 screws and replace reg/brush holder as a unit with alt mounted. Never paid over $20 bucks for reg, usually just brushes worn out. Get a Bently and a $20 meter(needle type) and save yourself some money. We all started at the bottom at one time.

Hey.

I looked long and hard at importing a syncro from south africa and found that in the end it would be cheaper to buy one locally. The place to find south african syncro's have seen good syncro's for around 8-12k aussie on www.gumtree.co.za. You could go this route but after paying 4 grand shipping YOu'll need to buy pre-1989 if you want to avoid the current adr compliance. Ofcourse factor in a couple grand for quarantine and lets not forget import tax/duties $$$$ . ADR compliance is also necessary though not a big hassle on vehicles pre 1989. Buy a newer syncro and it will need to meet compliance to current adr standards which can easily cost $10000 plus depending on how much work is required on specific models.

I see very nice syncro campers pop up here in oz for $16-20k some with a reconditioned motor and gearbox .I recommend going that route. Empty vans them pop up on ebay and the likes for arund 6000 with complete transmission rebuilds. I don't know your budget but for an extra 10 grand you could even have a newer 2000+ subaru conversion done. There are certainly options out there but you do need to look harder to find a t3 syncro well looked after.

Not too hard to do.

FWIW, on my '81, I installed discs on the rod between steering rack and relay box then slipped it into place. Should be the same for your '82.

Use new nuts.

You may find that a torque wrench won't fit into area at base of steering column. I know I did. I just did it by feel. No issues. The nuts are self locking.

You can adjust steering wheel (remove/refit) if "out".

Check for any obvious play at rubber bushings connecting the thing with the two pins while you're in there.
Are you planning on bringing it back or selling it there ? You can send it over as a tourist vehicle but you have to bring it back with you or pay all of the duty .
It is going to cost you at least 3k to get it there. If you plan on using it in Europe and you are going to put all of your supplies and food in it ,your only option is to put it in a container. If you went "RORO" Roll on rool off it is still well over a grand ,then you can have nothing in the vehicle , they want the jack and everything out. And they still steal stuff like batteries ,hubcaps and stereos.
We had some vans sent over from Germany to the states in a container with other parts, not stated on the bill of lading and had a set of Alumnum gates stolen and the axle from a trailer and we are not even sure what else.
So the lesson learned is to list everything and declare it all or don't cry when it goes missing.
Remember that when it gets to its destination that there will be unloading fees, port fees ,cleaning fees if there is dirt on it (Mad Cow) and lots of other little surprises .If you do not have someone to collect it when it gets there they charge a fee for daily storage.
While it sound good it gets expensive quickly.

If those were purchased in 1990 ,they would have been fully assemled with two line up pins in each one.
It wasn't until VW allowed them to be re made that they did away with the pins and left the hardware off.

Topic Replies: 1

I had a tranny fluid leak at the rear drivers side axle flange on my Syncro so I disconnected the CV joint. Turns out that the end of the axle had ground a hole in the plastic covered metal cap that is pressed into the axle flange! In the picture below you can see the outer perimeter of the blue cap, but the center of the cap is gone.
<img src='http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/6843/1002224.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/6843/1002224.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />
Here is a picture of the cap removed.
<img src='http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4100/1002225.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4100/1002225.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />
The picture below shows how the end of the axle has been ground down all along the outer perimeter where it has been scraping on the cap.
<img src='http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/5982/ground.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/5982/ground.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />
I think the CV joint is sliding too far down the axle allowing the end of the axle to scrape against the flange cap. I also noticed that when the CV joint is slid toward the center of the axle there is a significant gap between the spring washer and the joint (see picture below).
<img src='http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/9692/gapr.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/9692/gapr.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />
Is this normal? I have a vague memory of the CV joint fitting very tightly against the spring washer on my other van.
Anyone see this before?

What do I do with the VC once I have removed it? Peace, Johnny

I had to loosen the front subframe bolts and pound a wooden wedge in to gain enough room to get the housing that contains the VC off the front diff. Some haven't had to do this, not sure why the difference.

The decoupler is a piece of cake, good time to change the tranny fluid all together.

I believe AA trans axle will buy the VC off you for a rebuild.

Vanagon/Eurovan :: legal engine conversions for a California auto tranny van?

Looking at conversion options for my California westy with automatic transmission, it looks like I don't have many choices.

Subaru svx seems to be problematic with the auto tranny, 1.8T not available for auto tranny, Zetec not available in California, what do I have left? The subaru 2.2 which doesn't sound like a big gain in power for a heavy westy, diesel?

I don't want to change to manual tranny or stick with wasserboxer if I have a choice. I would love to do the svx 3.3, that is my first choice, but there seems to be a problem re-gearing the transmission. I do have 15" wheels though.

Any thoughts or experience with an svx auto tranny van?

Go fast enough to stay on top of the soft sand, but having no idea were your going, big lights or not your just hoping for a "through point" in the bushes at speed. I think my wife was literally yelling at me "not to slow down." Getting lost, slowng down, we sunk to the axles. If we were not with a group it would have been all over for us, we were remote to say the very least.

as my van was getting buried I'd give it a little thottle.... Back wheel spinning? check..... Front wheels spinning? mmmm turing? mmmmm slightly budging mmm? no check. WTF.
VC waisted, totally useless.

This was also my first experience with airing down your tires. Major difference. I don't think I would have "Dug the baj'isian Vanagon grave." had I been "aired down." Made the high speed roads much more pleasant as well.

I was with the GoWesty party in 2005 in Baja. Crazy Crazy, and more Crazy. lifetimer for me. A Vanagon at 65=70 mph on heavy rattle board roads is pretty impressive. It was the BIG rollers that bottom you out. Good times but really hard on your van.

I'll probably never abuse my van that way again, but wow, that was a serious trip. And getting stuck in the sand at night time made me feel pretty isolated.

That's why I quit taking my Westy to Baja. 'Got stuck in the sand too many times, and was beating the crap out of it. I only have 2wd so I never went in too far. I saw a EV down there that had aired down so far he broke the bead on his tire out in the deep sand. What a mess.

It is a SA vanagon not legal for import into the US unless something has changed recently. WBX 6 is a like a US WBX but with 2 more cylinders. Motor info- http://www.wbx6.com/

I can finally afford to put tires on my new to me '95 Winnie. Here's my problem. Winnebago manual says 195/70 R15. My gut says Vanco 2 8ply 215/70 R15 (2271 max load) but even cheaper is the Vanco 195/70 R15 (1984 max load).
Keep in mind the GVWR is near 6000 lbs. I won't be towing anything, but I'd like to keep the sprung weight down to a minimum to prolong the life of its moving bits.
This is a very clean example which runs great, the check engine light is intermittent, with only 49k.
Thoughts?
And yes, I checked the stickies.
P.S. Anyone got a middle seat?

Subject: bat light, alt issue
Posted: Yesterday 8:09 pm (GMT -7)
Topic Replies: 1

hey all...so my (85 w/ 2.1) truck didn't have enough juice to start a couple of days ago.
my battery is a Die Hard s I went to Sears to see if it had given up the ghost early and it was time for a free one.
they call me and tell me it's my alt and it needs replacement. I say ok.

I go to pick it up and they show me the bracket is busted, but the new alt is still mounted well enough to drive.
however, the batt light was still lit up solid. they said it was probably due to the broken bracket and they couldn't get enough tension on the belt.

so, next day I pull it into the shop and take it apart so I can weld the bracket back together.
I weld the nut (for the bolt the alt pivots on) onto the back end of the bracket so I don't have to thread it on from the back side (I read about the Go Westy modified bracket the night before) and I put it all back together. I still get the batt light on the dash.

I call my mechanic and he says I may have gotten by just changing the brushes for $40 rather than a whole new alt for $198.
so since the new alt is still giving me the bat light on my dash I go back to Sears and ask them about all of this...can I have my old alt back so I can swap brushes and give you back your bad reman alt ?

the manager says well...ok, you can have your old alt back and swap brushes and 'press out' the old diodes and put in new bearings but it'll cost you more then the reman from us. or we can install another reman alt for free cause the one we installed was obviously bad.

my mechanic didn't mention 'pressing in' new diodes or the bearings (old alt seems to spin freely so the bearings may be fine)

so...I'm not sure what to do. is it worth just replacing the brushes ?
or should I just have them install another alt ?
they also mentioned my old alt may have other worn out bits that caused it not to set off the batt light on the dash.

I don't know anything about 'rebuilding' alternators but I've changed brushes on grinders many times.
if it needs a bunch more stuff than just brushes maybe I ought to just have them install another one.

oh and how much belt deflection (tension) is proper ? I burnt up an alternator on my bug once
I'll second the horn ring info - a brass ring pressed into the steering wheel makes a sliding contact with a little metal tab in the wiper/turn signal retaining plate in the upper steering column. Don't let that problem persist, as the little metal tab can get trashed fairly quickly.

When I service this, I pull the steering wheel to lubricate the tab/ring - use some brass grease. You might be able to work a dab of this into the contact w/o removing the steering wheel. The tab is on the side facing the driver, and if it has gotten trashed (mine did), there might be enough left to re-form into a contact.

I am planning a trip to the EU in the future. How does one get their vehicle freighted acroos the Pond. (by ship of course) I am looking for the nuances of moving a vehicle overseas. An agent, insurance, costs or other pertinent info/ideas would be appreciated. I'm thinking about picking it up in Ireland, ferry to the UK, the Chunnel to France (or would a ferry be better), and then gingerly feather the accelerator around the rest of the continent.

Any way you can setup the FW to spin around a reasonably steady axis, and polish from like grit 60 up to 1200 or 2000, using plenty of WD40 or some other light lube and cleaner. Initially I bolted them to a crankshaft and turned it by hand on V-blocks. Later I made a holder I can put on my lathe. Whatever you can make work with what you have around.

Just outside of Gurerro Negro heading W. tword the Ocean with no roads, passed 3, fairly deep, water crossing, and at night time.

83.5 is the model year. I just converted the pressurized coolant reservoir from the early 'diesel' bottle setup to the 1984 bottle. The old one was crazed, and leaked only during running (until the pressure went down).

So now I just need time to get to work on it! Westy pop-top onto the van, and the whole interior from my donor, and it will look pretty sweet!

And sorry guys, not parting anything out just yet!

So perhaps I should have asked: what is the max RPM at which you think she can safely be driven for extended time? Is 4k pushing it?

What year?

The wire for the temp gauge sender can do this also if it comes off and touches metal or if it touches the exhaust and it's insulation burns through so the inner wire touches metal.

Mark

keithwwalker wrote:

So I put in a new pressurized coolant bottle and sensor in my doka last weekend.

Everything has been normal, until this morning, I start it up cold and the LED on the coolant temp gage is blinking, and the needle goes to max.

I turned off the doka, and turn it back on again, same problem.

Finally, turn it back on, still blinking, I rev the engine to 3000 rpm and the LED stops blinking.

What is going on?
For the first time in a while, I am not losing ANY coolant, and the levels are good.

I have read that aftermarket coolant level sensors are buggy, is this true?

Trying to find a clean bodied syncro to swap to a westy. I just did a westy swap onto a 91 carat, so now I have the itch to do it to a syncro. Its lots of trouble and partway through the conversion I started swearing the only way I was going to do it again was with a syncro.

Dude! i just saw an pretty clean '86 syncro with only 93,000 miles go for $750 on craigslist about 10 miles from my house. I thought about it hard, but I have no room for it right now.

Keep looking, they are out there.

Man, for $750 I'd have room, in fact, I think I might have enough room now!

> show me a running poptop for less than $3,000

I agree, that other samba link is to a van with blown engine:
"-Coolant is leaking from head gaskets
-Some oil smoke from the exhaust
-Brake rotors are rusted
-Upper balljoints and control arm bushings are cracked
-Radius rod bushings cracked
-Power steering lines rusted "

Thats nothing like your van. You did some really nice work on your AC system. Im sure any buyer will be lucky to get it, and I think your asking price is fair.

I dont need another van, so just here to say, sorry about your heart, and very nice van, fairly priced.. imho, any van under 5k, probably needs a motor, yours obviously has that base taken care of already.. and btw, its rare to find a van with working AC, or any AC at all, yours is a cherry.

And its a Wolfsburg!

nice piece, would be good for the grandkids, mention that to your wife and she might let you keep it..

I worked there for over a year. farmed from my job as an Audi tech at a Dealership to move down there. i love and miss some of the guys that I worked with there. i want GoWesty to continue to be a driving force in the vanagon world and I want my friends and their families who work for Lucas to prosper and continue enjoying a job in a wonderful part of the world. That said, I know more about GoWesty than most. I've seen the inside and I have seen the "horns" side of the bull.

I left GoWesty simply out of philosophies of business. That said, and the irony of it all, is the car/repair automotive business is filled with dishonesty and agressive business behavior. I suppose you could call me a sissy that way, but my momma raised me right. Right is right and wrong is wrong. I had to go.

BTW, if it were not for Taylor @ GoWesty, GoWesty would not be here today. Lucas you better believe that.

It's all well and good, I rant, I apologize. Would I buy a van from GW if I had the money. You bet your butt I would. I'd be happy to help provide the paychecks for the employees, they deserve it. Would I count on fair warranty behavior if I had a problem, nope, not a chance.

it is what it is...love it, hate it, or both. I do.

Big asking price and no real interior shots- the ones he has shows his recent purchase at food joint up front. He would have a hard time selling it for 1/2 of his asking price. I wouldn't really consider him a interested seller.

I realize the economy sucks and this is a poor time of year to sell, but show me a running poptop for less than $3,000 and add $3,500 in part receipts plus lots of work on my part, and $3,500 is an unrealistic, low-ball valuation.

I'd check your rear heater valve for leaks.
It would release coolant to the inside of the van, and then leak out the sides as you've described.

I was out at the Pick 'nPull in Moss Landing on Wednesday, and met a fellow Samba member for the first time...Sycrodoka. He was kind enough to give me a Bosch 99 variable relay.

Today was the first day that there was rain to really try it out. What a difference it is being able to adjust the wiper speed to the conditions! Totally cool mod! Thanks, SD!

What is the best process for disconnecting the lines from the compressor? Is there a certain sequence? Pitfalls? Bentley isn't so clear.

"Where were you when you figured out your VC did not work" OR "OMG I hate being a noob!"

I found myself out in Pismo Beach. I had driven there (alone) from SLC Utah to give my van a test run before getting the family stranded somewhere. This was it's first real test. I bought it two months ago and made a few small upgrades. I drove down on to the beach to camp (I hear this is the only beach in California you can drive on) and didn't make it 6 feet in the soft sand before I dug in. I have these skinny and super studded snow tires on right now. SO I get all cocky and engage the rear diff lock and proceed to dig myself right down so the exhaust and engine are chillin' on the sand. It happens in like 10 seconds. At this point I am pist in like 5 ways. What is up with the front end? How did that locker screw me? Did I just mangle my exhaust? Will I get this out in time to enjoy some frosty beverages?

Anyway, I air down the tires, and have some Toyota dude pull me out. This would normally be embarrassing but this is pretty common in the wheelin' community. Just happy someone was there to help. Airing down helped enough as long as I kept those wheels moving and stayed away from the soft stuff. In the end I found a nice place, backed up, popped the pop top and some wine and checked out the bio-illuminescent waves all night (which was really awesome) and dreamed about what it would be like to have a functioning four wheel drive.

So yes, a few hundred dollars of exhaust repairs (they were coming anyway but I was putting them off). The thing was nearly dragging behind the vehicle as I was crossing the Nevada Desert. Looks like the VC failed the non-seizure way as well (not sure what that is called..."open?"). I have a straight shaft and decoupler that I was not sure about installing, especially considering the icy/snowy roads we get here a few times a year. But my new opinion is, why fight the VC thing? That is just a shitty, finicky, finite pile of mediocre engineering. Totally cool contraption, but IMHO a dead end as the years go by. Would love to see a replacement product because I love a good AWD system. On the other hand, I have twice blown a single tire and replaced all 4 (yes, I hit a curb one of those times).

I figure you only figure out your AWD blows when you really need it functioning. I am sure there are plenty of cool stories out there.

OK, I feel better now. I am going to go lock myself in the garage for the weekend and install the decoupler, and maybe the straight shaft if I get lucky.

Anyone have any good pictorials of either process (or other info tidbits)? What do I do with the VC once I have removed it? Peace, Johnny
_________________
...on a mission, the destination is the excuse.

He chooses his language carefully and has a lawyer in his back pocket. When push comes to shove, the owner of GW will win. I hate it about him, but he's a pretty smart mofo.

Yes, GW warranty is lip service, but dollar for dollar you can't find better vans for the money. The crew at GW know there stuff and do it right.

BTW, he does help get things right with his customers, but they always pay more money, always. I don't know of any GOOD vanagon shop in the Seattle area that will work with him on his warranty work? last I heard he allows 35/hr for warranty work at repair shops. Most shops in seattle are 90/he or better. The customer makes up the difference. They always pay for warranty work. warranty...mmmm..

mc

I don't think the warranty is lip service. I worked with GW on a van I considered purchasing. They send you a detailed list of what repairs will be made, what parts will be replaced, what the base price of the van is, and what the repairs/services will cost. It's all spelled out. All the work they do is fully covered. There's no guesswork involved. The warranty states this explicitly. They're not trying to pull one over on anybody. No where does it say it's a bumper to bumper warranty. If they worked on it or replaced it, it's covered. Period. Just like any mechanic should do. They will also perform the warranty work or labor in their shop free. Because you live 1000 miles away, they try to give you additional compensation through offering replacement parts and what they pay in house for shop labor, not what you pay at a different mechanic. You know that ahead of time and it seems fair to me.

I don't want to argue but I don't see why people bad mouth this process. It's more than anybody else offers or you would get from a private seller.

I'd suspect this belongs to the owner of the shop.
So he throws some toys onto his personal rig, even though he doesn't need or use it (look at the underside of that skid plate, not a scratch), but it looks cool, and now maybe he wants to build up a new toy.
So, if you want to sell it for 35-40,000 isn't it easier to get that by listing it at 75? Folks always want to bring your price down. "I got it at half price! Brought him all the way down from 75 to 37,000!"

To the OP, check out the "Good deals on nice vans" thread.
It would give you an idea of what a van priced to sell looks like.
And she does just let me drive it. And fix it. Buy parts for it. Clean it.(she helps with that)

The best part of all...she loves the jalopy as much as I do! And calling her wifey works for me!

Today I used my Westy for work, well I've been using it for work alot more lately. I've had to deliver some wine racks to various accounts and they just don't fit in the Tiguan.

The Westy has been running fine and driving nice, but and there's always a BUT! That damn S.O.B. Murphy of Murphys Law fame raised his ugly head today. It was raining very hard and my Westy died in an accounts' parking lot an hour from home.

So I had to get out in the rain and open the engine compartment to see if I could see something, anything? Yup, it's the new starter I put in a week or so ago. Wires I tell you! Secound time this week! First time it's the small wire on the solenoid that comes off, while I'm at the Napa store where I bought the starter. Fixed that though!

Today it was the two bigger wires, nut had worked it's way loose and no starty! Tightened that down and got me back to town. Where I could get out of the white shirt and tie and into my grease monkey clothes, to have a closer look. Everythings really tight under there now so I hope there will be none of that again.

I've got to hand it to the Bentley, but more importantly to all you fine folks here on the Samba that make everything alot more understandable and explainable and enjoyable than some book. I know that I was not alone in that parking, you were all there with me. Thank You all!!

First position of course is OFF , next is front fog lights ON and the next position is front and rear fog lights are ON.

If you have a problem with connecting the wires let me know, I will pull my switch and will take a picture.

So there is a warranty on what they do. If they install a new engine and tranny, it's covered for one year or 12000 miles. What they don't cover is old parts they don't replace. Anyone can buy an aftermarket warranty for any vehicle though. It makes total sense to me.

The only reason that I have brought any of this warranty stuff up was because someone mentioned earlier in the post that the reason to hypothetically go with GW over the other guy when spending your $75k (!) was that you get a warranty with the GW van. That word alone covers alot of ground, so I thought I'd chime in with exactly how much of an advantage that really is since I have examined their warranty when it came time for a friend to lay the money down. Compared to the guy in the classifieds, a GW warranty is a feature worth considering, but it isn't a bumper to bumper kind of deal. I guess that when we are talking about $75k vans, the comparison would be between, say, a GW warranty and those from Sportsmobile, et al.- which I know absolutely nothing about.

However...there are a couple of details that aren't so crystal clear on their site that affect the reality of the warranty. You get a little more detail when you start negotiating for purchase.

For instance, a fair number of the vans they have been selling of late are on consignment from people that ordered them in the past couple of years. The 12/12,000 on the engine, trans. started when those parts were installed. So, if you are buying one of their rigs and it has a "rebuilt" engine, they don't restart the counter at zero for every new buyer after the original install. But this is reasonable enough, who would perpetually guarantee something that has been out of their hands doing who knows what for any length of time?

The key part of their warranty is that they state "Finally, and most importantly: If you experience trouble with your recently purchased vehicle, you have our promise that GoWesty will work diligently to resolve the problem in a fair way, whether the item that failed is warranted or not. Period." ..and from what I have read around here, they do live up to this for the most part, just as it reads. But, thats a promise not a warranty. I expected a little broader warranty coverage before we looked into it, but now, after I have considered their position a bit further, I agree that the GW warranty is fair enough.

As for those aftermarket warranties, they are fairly restrictive, which is also understandable when you consider what it is that they are actually purporting to cover- "any old car with any kind of history", etc. They would have to protect themselves somewhat or the business model would fail on the first couple of claims.

The aftermarket warranties that I have experience with require you to put an additive into the coolant (hey' is that phosphate free?!) that will indicate if the thing has been overheated. Next, they require that maintenance is done by an "authorized" shop. The company that GW links to for these warranties, "AUL", states on their website that, if you have any mechanical trouble, and you are within 60 miles of the "dealer" you must take the vehicle back to the dealer. If you are beyond 60 miles from that dealer, you must first call the company "administrator" for approval before having anything done. Now, knowing the propensity for things to break at the worst possible time and place, and given the nature of Vanagon drivers to wander, it sounds like it would end up being a losing proposition to try and sort this service out on the fly. Then, just imagine where a company such as that would send you and your beloved Vanagon for repairs in the wilds of North America. Most VW dealerships don't know what to do with Vanagons. The aftermarket warranties that I have seen also require you to have the oil changed by an authorized shop, too.

Most of us are involved with these things to customize and repair them at will. Even those with the most limited mechanical abilities like to change their own oil...

BTW, I just got done working on one of those GW rigs, and I must say, it's a damn nice van and you can tell that they tried to make it as nice as they could, warranty or not. That's how they get the big bucks.

The Canadian rebuild is not know for its quality.

I'd say 3,500

Edit: Thinking about it a little more, I have the same year, same color, full camper and I just did a rebuild myself and sent the trans to German transaxle for a preventative rebuild.

If I were to sell it now (it still needs brake and suspension work) I would ask
5,000-6,000. (never would sell)

I don't think I would get it. It's just that I put so much heart and soul in it that I think it would be worth more than it is.

get a plastic milk crate, or something about the height of the bottom of the slider door. This way you will be able to rest the door on the crate as your getting the door off.

Other than that it's pretty straight forward.

if you haven't done it before, as with all things, the learning curve kinda stinks. but this the crate you won't get the "wholly crap thats a heavy door!" effect and drop/twist/torque something you shouldn;t have.

take it slow and think about it while you doing it. its not hard but the door is heavy and weird to support while doin it. A helper is always good.

I've replaced every part of the system to no effect(even the silly proportioning valve). Also had it checked by the local vanagon specialist who changed a vacuum hose and said it was better for a hundred bucks. Now gathering parts for the Taurus rear brake conversion in the next few weeks (didn't have a 15mm wrench on the last pickurpull trip), we'll see if that helps. Be wise about throwing parts at it, didn't help me. Expect well-intentioned replies about adjusting the rears and bleeding.

Cheers!

I've never been introduced to cable shifting before, though I'm a complete sucker for these types of upgrades, and two questions come to mind.

It's mentioned earlier that this is intended to give a car-like feel, and someone states they wish these would have come from the factory. Is this something found on modern cars? I've never stopped to think what modern cars use for shifting linkage.

Given that they are the best darn cables known to man, do they stretch at all? Over time? Initially? Are there going to be occasional adjustments to make to take out slack? Thanks.

Hey guys. I've read through all of the posts about various coolant leaks and their causes and solutions, but I didn't see the same scenario described that I've just discovered on my '90 GL.

The other posts have given me some clues as to the source of the problem, but I have a feeling someone out there will know precisely where the problems are given the following description.

I've never seen any coolant on the ground around this Vanagon, but I've only owned it since June. We've had fairly cold temps at night lately, in the mid 20's, and it's been sitting level in the driveway. I've been driving it about once a week. I just noticed a small puddle of coolant about 1.5 feet in front of the driver's side rear wheel well. It's coming from one of the drainage holes just on the inside edge of the body panel. I can't see the source of the leak. I noticed a corresponding puddle of coolant in the same spot on the passenger side. It also appears to be coming from inside the body panel. I can't readily see the source of either leak. Does the location and description of these two near identical cold weather drip spots pin it down for anyone? Thanks!

Sorry I had you confused with another poster.
Whatever, buy a set of 2 of these for the winter 195R14s and put them all the way around if you have the dough. You will be well served.
