It sounds like the carb is leaking internally somehow and flooding the intake with fuel. It could be that your fuel pressure is too high or a faulty needle seat on the float, improperly adjusted float or any of a number of reasons. I'd start with the carb.

Well, brakes are adjusted, fluid levels checked...... All is good under the car!

Took off the Steering Wheel to see how this ignition key cover is installed. Turns out that there aren't any screws needed as the 1973 has.
All one needs to do is loosen the Four Multi Function Switch Screws......
Pull up a fraction of an inch on the assembly.........
Snap the cover on around the key, make sure it is mated with the trim housing around the column
Push the Multi Switch back down into place and reinstall the screws.

The two little hooks are held in place by the white plastic of the Multi Switch.

I say stuck float or check timing. My car didn't really like a certain timing spec, it would run great cold but wouldn't start warm. After a small change of timing it was good.

By you saying you have your foot on the floor, that sounds like a float out of adjustment to me.

I like bonnet - all the European and Australian guys on the Fiat Spider forum use that term for the hood.

Last post for today - should bring us up to date. This morning we got the front fenders off, and that required dealing with some wiring removal as well since we had to get the headlight and turn signal wires out of the fenders to get them off.

Second day of work found us getting the doors off and the starting in on the fenders. We had to drill out three of the door hinge screws, but eventually got them out and got the doors off. Then we got the car up on stands and took off the wheels.

<img src='http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo136/seubanks-photos/1969%20VW%20Bug%20Restoration%20Pictures/03%20-%20Wheels%20and%20Rear%20Fenders%20Off/DSC09944.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo136/seubanks-photos/1969%20VW%20Bug%20Restoration%20Pictures/03%20-%20Wheels%20and%20Rear%20Fenders%20Off/DSC09944.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.

We got the rear fenders off, but like the doors it was more work than expected. Three of the fender bolts were spinning the nuts inside the body, and we couldn't get a wrench on them, so we ended up cutting the bolts. We also removed the front and rear deck lids, and got a head start on the front fenders by getting the lights out.

<img src='http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo136/seubanks-photos/1969%20VW%20Bug%20Restoration%20Pictures/03%20-%20Wheels%20and%20Rear%20Fenders%20Off/DSC09951.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo136/seubanks-photos/1969%20VW%20Bug%20Restoration%20Pictures/03%20-%20Wheels%20and%20Rear%20Fenders%20Off/DSC09951.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.

Quick question - for the sake of using the right terms. Do you call the front area the trunk, and therefore the lid is the trunk lid, and the rear area the engine bay, and therefore the lid is the hood? I just can't get used to calling the front lid the trunk and the rear lid the hood.
On our first day of work, we started off easy, just trying to get the doors off and clean out the interior a little. It was a good introduction to the patience required when working on an old car because three of the door hinge screws were rusted in place, so we sprayed them with penetrating oil and let them sit.

So we spent the morning removing the tar paper (or whatever it's called) from the floor to see what kind of condition the pan is in underneath. We found some surface rust, but overall it was in pretty good shape, and the area under the battery is intact, even though it looks a little rough. Some additional clean up and rust preventer should give us a good foundation to work with.

Subject: WHAT WAS VW THINKING?
Posted: Today 1:58 pm (GMT -7)
Topic Replies: 2

I've restored several vintage cars (52 Jag XK 120, 49 IH KB 1 Panel delivery), but I've never seen a worse system for hanging the doors than in my 78 VW Beetle convertible that I am currently restoring. The bottom hinge pin on the passenger side was broken off when I bought the car, and getting the broken pin out proved to be a formidable challenge.

First of all, what was VW thinking when they riveted the door half of the hinge into the door? If the hinge was screwed in instead of being riveted, it could be easily removed, put into a press, and the pins could be pressed out. In addition, I've never seen a system where the pin has to be pressed through the top ear of the hinge during installation. Without the VW tool, this is very difficult because if the door is not off the car, there is no easy way to support the bottom of the hinge.

Now that I have the door off the car and the pins finally removed, I'm going to switch to a more sensible system. VW used 8MM pins which are about .004" larger than 5/16", so I am going to ream the hinge pin holes to 11/32" and use regular 11/32" hardened hinge pins which are readily available in any auto parts store. If the door ever has to be removed again, these new pins will be able to be driven out with a punch. I'm tempted to do the driver's door at the same time, but getting the pins out is too much trouble.

Been lurking and learning on the forum for a while, and wanted to jump in at this point and begin posting progress on the '69 standard that my son and I are restoring.

We've had this deal since he was about 4 years old that when he turned 15 I would buy him an old bug and we'd spend a year restoring it together, then when he got his license at 16 it would be his first car. Well, he turns 15 on June 1, so started looking for good project cars a couple months ago, and actually came home with this '69 standard Beetle in mid April for $1450.

<img src='http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo136/seubanks-photos/1969%20VW%20Bug%20Restoration%20Pictures/01%20-%20Bug%20Comes%20Home/DSC09749.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo136/seubanks-photos/1969%20VW%20Bug%20Restoration%20Pictures/01%20-%20Bug%20Comes%20Home/DSC09749.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.

It drove well enough to drive it home about 15 minutes away. There are seat frames (no pads or covers) and bumpers, but other than that, what you see is what you get.

This is the first bug in our family, so we're not real familiar with the specifics, but I've been doing work on my 1969 Fiat Spider for a couple years, so while I'm no pro, at least I'm not a total noob around cars.

Surface rust in all the usual places, but no major rust-through anywhere that we've been able to find. We've already had a few work days, but I'll throw them up as separate posts so I don't get too many pics in one post. There are more pics at Photobucket. http://s369.photobucket.com/user/seubanks-photos/l...mes%20Home
We're obviously excited about the process ahead, and will appreciate any and all input, feedback, pointers and advice from the forum.
Thanks!

You MUST pull the assembly and slide the brake pedal out of the assembly. It rotates on an inch and a half cylinder that PB Blaster will not penetrate and clean. Polish that up and you'll be good to go. If there's one hard learned lesson i have, this is it. Forget the broken spring.

I have removed and reinstalled the engine from my 68 Beetle several times (to experiment with different camshafts) and do this by myself:
-jack stands under torsion bars,
-remove two bottom 17 mm nuts & left top bolt,
-floor jack under sump & remove top right 17 mm nut,
-lower engine to floor,
-jack up one side to provide clearance to slide engine out behind the wheel.

Sorry ashman I meant one of those leads goes to the BATTERY not the starter. At any rate the Haynes manual was indeed referring to removing B+ wires from the regulator, to run voltage and current check tests from the generator. But for whatever reason I cannot start the car if I remove those B+ terminal wires from the regulator. Following is word for word transcription:

Generator - no load voltage check

1. Disconnect the wires from terminal 51 (B+) on the regulator and make sure the positive ends cannot touch any nearby part and short to earth.
2. Connect the positive lead from the voltmeter to terminal 51 (B+) on the regulator and the negative lead to earth.
3. Start the engine and increase speed slowly to a fast tickover. The voltmeter should rise to a reading of 7-8 volts on a 6-volt system, 113-14 volts on a 12 volt system, and stay there. If there is no reading the fault is most likely in the generator. If the reading is incorrect then the regulator is most probably at fault. Nevertheless, both could be faulty in either case.

Should I be able to start the car with no problem even if those B+ regulator wires are disconnected? Because I couldn't at all- but immediately after I plugged them back in the car fired right up.

In years LONG gone in the USA, many States used the Engine number as the vehicle ID number.

Occasionally a "sleeper" will surface with paperwork that way but rare.

Stamp whatever darn numbers you wish into your case! As Johnny said, even your girlfriends phone number..... No one will care.
Now...... Messing with the modern Vehicle ID plate...... Different story!

Ok, where do you guys get this incorrect info? ALL Supers for US import had slots in the front apron. NO Beetle shipped from the factory with A/C ... it was an accessory added by the dealer.
At first I thought I needed a later throw out bearing, pressure plate and operating arm (71-72?) but now I wonder if this would require machining the later operating arm to fit the transmission. Is this also required to convert to the older throw out bearing? I was hoping it was just modifying with this adapter and new parts.

Your rpm ranges are pretty normal from what I've heard. The bus tends to be a little higher in the rpm range on the freeway than the bug.

As for how high you can take it? Some say don't go over 5k if you can avoid it. Your car in stock configuration isn't making any power past about 4500-4700. I have my shift light set to 4700

Truth is I dont think of black guys owning VWs at all anymore these days--that idea just doesnt fit the current time we live in-- but this story reminded me of one time way back in the 80s when my dad and I were in the bug at a gas station, parked under a street light so we could see putting oil in the car. Well under this street light was where the gas station allowed a lot of owners to park their cars for sale, and a black man pulled up in an old truck and asked if ours was for sale, and I just now realized that at the time I didnt think it odd at all for a black guy to own a VW. Weird.
Or you could go to the technical section and do a little research. Lots of pics, owners manuals, wiring diagrams, paint and interior colors, etc.

Maybe the OP was just trying to show that vintage VW owners, in particular, are a closer-knit community--no matter how different we are.

He mentioned that the old dude was black. I immediately wondered if a Chevy or Ford passerby would stop to help the guy for stereotypical reasons. Whereas, old (and young) V-dubbers tend to stick together a bit closer, regardless of race, or age, etc. In other words, I'm making a broad, general statement here. And it's this:

Dubbers don't care who your daddy is!

For instance (although I wore my hair down to the middle of my back for years, but don't now), I saw a kid in an oncoming Bug a few weeks back, and he flipped me the peace sign as he passed me. I waved back, of course--like I wave at all VW owners. But I had to smile a little. Although, I had my fun in the '60's, I've led a fairly conservative life for many years--although I'm not THAT conservative, mind you. The point is, although the kid and I may be separated by time, experiece, and lifestyle, we both share a special kinship as a direct result of knowing something that others don't (if you have to guess what I'm talking about, you don't own an old bug, by the way).

Yes, I use skin color, race, etc. to describe people. I also mention size, proportion, hair color, eye color.

To be honest, mentioning the race of the old black man, improved the story for me, by reminding me that we do, in fact, share an unspoken bond.

Now if anyone disagrees, you may now go to a Mercedes-Benz web site and eat your Triscuts and drink your prune juice and complain about how the country is going to hell in a handbasket.

Yeah that's also the problem, it's 45 years old (engine).
So anything could have happend to that engine.

If it's an 1600 engine from 1968 (if the first number is the original) then I'm happy. My dad's neighbour used to work at Volkswagen in the 70's.
He was the one who said: "This cannot be a 1300, this is more powerfull".
That got me thinking
One of the last major annoyances of my Bug is the windshield.
Cracked
Badly Pitted
Delaminating
Discolored............. That white haze?...... IN the Glass!
I ordered a new one from Chucks Convertibles...... After sourcing a New one locally which ended up being for a Super Sedan!
I got that glass for a song! But...... I Paid too much in the end.......It's mine.....all mine...... .

Anyway, I took the short "cheap" cut already, time to do it right Stupid!

FedEx just rolled in and handed me a surprisingly small box......... Inside was a windshield.
Completely engulfed in expanding foam and foam pellets!
<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1062677.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1062677.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.

Not wanting to force or flex the glass I cut away the box from the glass and began to carefully pull apart the foam.......
<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1062679.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1062679.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. It's a 73. As far as I know there is no AC. I could be wrong where would it be at?

As far as problems, got some shimmy at around 40, pretty sure thats the tie rod ends.

And I am pretty sure one of my pistons exploded. Pulling the engine today. Was gonna take pictures but forgot my phone. Will take some once I have a chance.
He was found pining away for someone to love and drive him behind a garage. So I fell in love, bought him, and brought him home. He needs some work, was running until about a week ago, but hopefully with some love and care he will once again be cruisin the highway and byways, turnin heads, and causing people to get punched in the arm.

Excellent question. Because that engine is original 1971, and the intake manifold has never been removed from the engine, so I went out to take an additional look.

The stud threads into the right hand side of the engine case. There's a part of the left hand side of the engine case that slides over that. There is only one nut.

So the order is, from right to left: right side of engine case with stud installed/left hand side of case/center section of manifold/lock washer/nut.

I typically would get the dropped engine onto the ground under the VW, then use a 4x6 inch block of wood on my jack on the transmission cross-support to lift the VW rear up, then slide the engine out.

I don't typically do the "remove the wheel, then out the wheel well" thing, but that does eliminate the need to jack up as high.

There is actually a lot of discussion and information about engine numbers in these forums........
Some have the old number spot milled away and a new number stamped in........ Or not.......
Numbers stamped on top of numbers.......
Some have tags like you have.......
Some have a new number on the right side and the original number left as well.......

Letters, numbers, symbols...... I find the history aspect of it all quite interesting...... but as Johnnypan noted, it is of little, if any, value 40 years after the fact.

Thanks a million!

Not sure what a picture is gonna tell you. You have to figure out where TDC is on YOUR engine. The distributor drive can be in any of 12 different positions depending on where the gear was installed when the engine was built.

You can't always tell where #1 is from a picture.

This point has to driven home, YOU MUST locate #1 firing Top Dead Center before you can proceed. Keep in mind, all cylinders will reach top dead center twice during a combustion cycle, once to fire, once to exhaust.

Two revolutions of the crankshaft = one combustion cycle.

On the firing TDC both valves are closed.
On the Exhaust TDC the Exhaust valve is open.
When I remove the engine from my Beetle I leave the car on the ground drop the engine to the ground inside the engine compartment then jack up one side of the car, remove the rear tire on the lifted side. I then slide the engine out through the wheel well.
On my Bus I removed the rear apron and slide the engine straight back,no lifting.
I was intimidated by lifting the entire car, but last time I took the engine out of a Beetle, I tried lifting the rear of the car, just forward of the transmission and it wasn't as difficult as I had thought. Just make certain your front wheels are chocked!

Yes, you're going to have to jack higher for a bug.

I have a floor jack with a 23 inch lift, so, for me, it's no big thing. Others have smaller jacks--with less lift--so they use boards on the jack face to get more lift.

The place to put the jack plate is at the center of the "Y" on the frame forks. Jack here until you can pull the engine out from under the car. Some have an alternative method, where they don't jack as high, and they tip and pull the engine from one of the wheel wells (after removing the tire).

68 swing axle will be long axle with long spline. To put the short axle short spline wide 5 drums on you will need these spacers between the drum and nut

http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C13-22-5281-7

Might be better in the long run to swap in some 66 and earlier short axles .. that way if you want wide 5 rims and extra clearance you're all set.

My 68 Ghia I am swapping out the long axles for 66 and earlier short axles for more tire clearance, but I want to keep the four lug. So I am going to have to mill down the snout on the 4 lug drum 5/8" to be able to get the nut to go on.

That is the front side (FIF) of the bearing with the dust cover that can be carefully removed to add in new grease.

There is no VIN number on the case, nor is the engine number used for verification...therefore the legal issue is moot..a builder can stamp whatever he wants on a case, generally its an indicator that the case has been machined. As for what sense do the numbers make that the builder used? it could be the builders internal code, his girlfriends phone number, whatever he felt like stamping at the time..I don't trust any numbers a rebuilder stamps on a case to indicate linebore cut size or crankshaft dimension, the case could have been machined at a later date and left unmarked...measure and verify.

CD looks almost new. Note the straight sanding lines across the friction material. Those are from the finish manufacturing process of the friction material.

FW surface is going to have those marks due to normal wear.

Looks like your FW seal is good since you do not have any oil on the CD. Have had to score up the FW surface on engines that have a slight amount of oil getting to the FW surface. Otherwise the flat surface of the FW and CD with a little oil can act like a suction cup causing early morning shifting problems. A drill bit held by hand so the side of the tip of the drill bit does a good job of scoring "W" shaped marks on the FW surface.

PP is probably good, we would use it for now. Though never have liked the diaphragm type of PP.

Replace the operating shaft (VW called the cross shaft that) and make sure the throw out bearing is centered in L/R relation to the transaxle input shaft. Failure to do that will result the TO bearing getting shoved side to side when pedal is pushed. This in turn wears out the OS arms all too quickly. Which looking at the image might be what happened to yours.
Have had to buy special washers to shim the OS to the right a tad to get the TO bearing centered, and even then you might need to ever so slightly bend the arms L/R to get that last bit to as centered as possible.

Get the right early TO bearing retaining clips. The not so good ones as just "U" shaped. The much better ones have a full spring loop in the bottom of the "U" shape.
Like this:
<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/896023.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/896023.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

The other problem is the new replacement early style TO bearing (as shown in the image above) are getting a lot of bad reviews.
If you can find the older style of TO bearing they are better and can be re-greased to make them last MUCH longer.

Even with the NLA TO bearing, do not sit for very long with the clutch pedal pushed down. Say if you pull up at a traffic light, better to just shift into neutral, get your foot off the clutch pedal and let the TO bearing rest.
Not sure what a picture is gonna tell you. You have to figure out where TDC is on YOUR engine. The distributor drive can be in any of 12 different positions depending on where the gear was installed when the engine was built.

You can't always tell where #1 is from a picture.

I think what he is asking is why his number plate would have BOTH numbers stamped into it. My guess (and it is absolutely a guess) is that your engine was rebuilt at some point to those 1974 specs, and--whether or not they used the original case again-- the rebuilders stamped the original case number into the new tag along with the number designation for the new engine type case. I dont know why they would do that unless it was a law thing.

What year is your car?
The brake light switches are screwed into the master cylinder housing, kind of angled downward just a bit on the drivers side of the master cylinder. From my Haynes manual, #7 in the diagram:

<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1062597.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1062597.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

You should have two brake light switches, and if your car is stock original with the dash mounted brake system warning light, you may also have a third switch screwed in between the two brake light switches for that (#23 in the diagram.) Chances are you only have the two though.

Epic fail on what looks like a HD cross shaft. That and a T/O bearing need to be replaced. The PP looks new inside but beat on the outside but you think it good? I will need to find a 7mm wrench to measure the clutch. Can you tell by the marks how used a clutch is? It almost seems new until you spot those marks. If it should be replaced, I figured a simple rigid one would k.i.s.s.. Flywheel has what I believe are marks from the clutch? No oil. Based on the pics, what advice can you give? Hello!

I have removed an engine from a 1977 bus before... and I was able to slide the engine off the transmission, and then jack up the back of the van over the engine.

Now I am going to be removing an engine from a 1968 beetle, and all of the information online that I have found talks about jacking up the entire car. I would like to avoid this if possible.

Is it possible to do it with just jacking the back over the engine, the same way I did the bus?

Thanks.

The only way the price should be higher based on original paint is if the car is a candidate for a show quality survivor...in my opinion that is an extremely rare proposition...most times the 'survivor' tag is a hustle by someone searching for a sucker.

The engine case rarely lives the full life of the car..yes,they can be machined and reused but depending on the way the engine failed it may be a different case.

Okay, so to know for sure I have to remove that tag?

When I search for the 2 numbers separately I get this:

B 5649:
Well, I wasn't sure, but my problem is that it's being advertised as original paint being a survior so to speak therefore the asking price reflects that in the higher amount. I just thought that all original bugs came with black fender bead....? Yes or No? The car color is a pastel creme/beigh/yellow which is an original color. (not sure of the proper name for it) and the bead is the same color. I do have another beetle that color with the matching color bead but I DO know it has be repainted. But just not sure on this other car with what I consider a higher asking price due to it (supposedly ) being original paint.

BIG THANKS<

I'd bet a shiny new nickel you either have crossed wires at the flasher relay, or crossed wires at the double filament turn/running light bulbs at either the front or back of the car or both.
The guy who painted my car crossed 4 or 5 of the wires when he put the light lenses back together, and I had the exact same problem about the dash turn signal warning light flashing one time when you first hit the turn signal switch, and then wouldnt flash again. You have to have the correct wires attached to the correct filaments on those bulbs to allow the flasher relay to work properly.

Guys, I'm not making any accusations of racism here, not am I being sensitive. I'm simply making an observation that, as people, when telling a story or something, often throw a person's ethnicity into the details when it has no bearing. I find it odd is all, not offensive. For a people or culture who is trying to get away from things like "race cards," we still do a lot to draw attention to it.

Maybe we shouldn't be. A person is a person is a person. That's all I'm saying. My apologies for inadvertently turning this into something it wasn't.

I know you said you talked your client out of the EGR but I can appreciate her wanting it to look original (I share the sentiment). Can't you plug the hole at the manifold but leave the valve and tube and dead-end it where it passes through the tin? In this way you would not need the EGR filter and it is not visible anyway. This is my plan for when I replace my current muffler.

That's a owner/mechanic added crimp to that black wire.

I can't tell from your photo or description where the other end of that yellow-crimped wire actually goes, trace that out.

Most likely that goes onto the positive terminal though, because anything else that needed a ground would almost certainly be grounded directly to the pan or body, and not have a wire snaked all the way back to the battery, no need to do that. Track down where that wire leads to, post a photo.
