Check that your adjusters are installed correctly. The shoes, and the notches where the shoes engage, are cut at an angle. It's easy to install the adjusters upside down and make the shoes too wide.

I would first check the arc of the shoes against the drum, then grind off a small amount at the top and bottom of the shoe where they meet the star wheel and cylinder. Maybe 1/32" each or less should do. Be sure to keep the same angles.

baxsie, for your rear engine tin, you can easily make a small filler section to close the open gap. 22 or 24-ga. sheetmetal or even alu flashing. It is an "offset pizza slice" shape, with a 1/2" bent-down edge to fit into the engine seal, and a single hole for the tin screw. I used a fender washer on mine so it's held in place using the tin screw at the far left of the large tin. Painted it black and it's nearly invisible in the engine compartment since the view is mostly hidden by the cooling air hose.

You can also make suitable covers for the preheat tube "hump" in the rear tin if you plan to use dual carbs.

The engine in my '77 is currently out for an unforeseen reason, or I'd have taken and posted a photo of this section for your benefit.

I'm thinking about changing the original basket weave seat covers for the similar ones TMI sell.it looks like the frames and padding are ok, just the covers have been sun damaged over the years.

Has anyone done this on the forum - any tips or advice is appreciated.

are they any other/cheaper alternatives apart from second hand seats?

Who sells REAL GERMAN brake and suspension parts?

The reason I ask is, I bought a tie rod end from a local auto parts store that when I ordered it, I specified that I wanted German, NOT Chinese.

When it came in, it was a Meyle brand. German wording on the box, not cheap, looks to be good quality. But, when you look at the bottom of the box, it clearly says " P R China". ????

Now, I'm replacing the ball joints and all the wheel cylinders on the pan rebuild and I want REAL GERMAN. I see some suppliers like Wolfsburg West give you a choice of German or Brazilian, but is it the same deal like the tie rod end I ordered?

Any experience with anyone getting the real stuff?

Thanks,
Thanks a lot Jeffrey, Ok then I will see if I can get 195/70/15 as they will go best with my 5.5 rims plus look taller and be more meaty. If not, I'll see if I can get 185/70 as there's not too much difference.

On a slightly related note, I was in the process of lubricating the star adjusters and springs for the brakes but I got over zealous and lubricated the backing plate in an effort to halt surface rust. Stupid in hindsight I know. Today I have seen that one of the rear shoes has absorbed some oil, it's not on the surface but sort of inside it:

Is this terribly dangerous or will it wear off? All other 7 shoes are fine.

Edit: hmm well it came off with some celulose thinner. I also read ether or heating the shoes up will work.

Tried swapping hubs round at the front but the 'tight' one is not tight on the other shoes. The hub is not the problem, so must be the shoes on the left wheel. But with the star adjusters at their minimum what else is there to do other than grind off the inside of the hub?

The other three drums all turn freely with the hub over the shoes, but the front left is both difficult to get on and, when it is on, it's an effort to rotate it. I have adjusted the star adjusters to their minimum point so the shoes are furthest away from the inside of the hub as possible but still, too tight.

Any ideas??

Regarding timing at full advance at 3500rpms or at idle:

Which do you drive at?

See, I misunderstood originally and thought that I had to be on 30 degrees at idle since I don't know anything about the RPM because I don't really know cars and I don't have a tachometer or anything to tell me where the RPMs are at. It was suggested that I try anywhere between TDC and 7.5 degrees. I see 7.5 mentioned all the time. Though my pulley does have a notch at 5 degrees after, it has to be important somehow.

The Bentley confuses me with the range since it says on page 53

======================================

Table e. Ignition Timing

1970 cars and fuel injection cars with Automatic Stick Shift

0 degrees before TDC

Carburetor cars from August 1970 to spring 1973 and fuel injection cars with manual transmission

5 degrees after TDC

Carburetor cars only from spring 1973 (engines with a single vacuum hose to the distributor)

7.5 degrees before TDC.

====================================

Since the engine for the car originally had one of those distributors with the 2 hoses (vacuum and retard) I suppose the 5 degrees after setting was right. However, since the new distributor I have doesn't have the retard line to connect to the carb I suppose the 7.5 degrees before is the logical choice.

Though I do still have the original distributor with the vac and retard can on it.
Reason for the new distributor (less than a year old) is the original didn't mechanically/centrifugal advance and was seized and later i freed it up but still lack some shims and other internal board stuff to get it functional again)

It's all been a confusing ride. Someone should show me exactly what tool (picture or link) to use to actually measure the RPM's, maybe then I could really get it set right.

While driving to work tomorrow I'm going to listen to the engine and see if it feels better.

Up to 1986 Mexibugs were still being made for the European market in 1200 form and as 1600s for the Mexican market. They are all but identical to the late 70s German Bugs. I have an '82 Mexi and have had no issues with Mexi only parts.

You're welcome - and I do applaud your dedication to "doing it right" and not wanting to go along with some of the functionally adequate alternatives. And yeah I also get annoyed when I read the words "all original" and immediately spot a lot of stuff that clearly isn't correct, such as this. I do appreciate those 1-in-100+ cases where that description actually is true though.

Not worth it until I find one with all that stuff, which may be a long time. I guess my point was that lots of folks on here have kept saying "get an original air cleaner" like its no big deal. Its a BIG DEAL people when you cant find all the parts you need to make it work properly.
Anyway thanks for all your help with this info.

Well, I'll be soon be starting on this build.
This is a good example of what I'm going for.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1460961
The plan for her is to convert the bumpers, tail lights, turn signals to '67 and to lower it like the one in the link. Redo all the interior to a stock '70 beige, put the correct tin, stock exhaust with zoom tube, dual webbers, and the original vacuum dizzy. All new rubbers all away around, all new electrical, gauges, and redo on this stereo system. Also need to replace the floor pans and the panel behind the rear seat. THEN I think I'll be happy with it. The owner who owned this before me did a lot of cheesy, hokey things to this car... So I have some work to do!
Yeah, that 1968 was a one year only air cleaner. 1969 (and 70 I think was the same) was a bit different with only the right-side inlet. Still, it used a cable to operate the warm air flap. I guess I should have included this illustration as well:

Following the body+paint guy's advice, we got going on the paint removal. 80grit with the DA on the big sections. Detail work with the bead blaster:

Thanks for that info glutamodo-
My problem is NONE of those air cleaners looks like the one that was originally on my 69. Mine looked closest to the one in your first photo but had no driver's side snorkel- only the passenger side like this:

<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/316341.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/316341.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

and this one definitely has a flap cable-- you can see it in the back. So how is it controlled?

Now, concerning that vacuum-tank one - thats the one I found on bug city website, and it looks like I could ACTUALLY use that one, because my intake manifold has the vacuum port for my autostick! I would rather have stock original but would this work??

I am trying to identify places I need to disconnect. I know about the bolts under the sides of the pan (18 or so....) and the four in the back, and the two or so in the trunk... but what about these 3 in the front and one one ach side in the rear?

It sounds like you still haven't gotten the front seperated. Have you gotten the large bolts out of the front body-chassis spot, around the passenger and driver feet area? I'm pretty sure there are 2 or 4 of them. They would be on the bottom left and right of this pic, and accessed from underneath. 19mm maybe?

THere is a lot of other things that need unbolting that you may have missed.

The steering box and idler arm need unbolting from the body, the 2 bolts on the tunnel bracket next to the pedals?
there's 2 bolts in the back of the spare wheel well bolting the body to the frame head which are easy to miss.

he said that because the channels rust so easily you use this instead. I think you could take the tubes out in the summer and "shut off" the heat by a switch of some sort

It is still there and I can always put it back. If I didn't cut it though, my gas blows out were you fill up. It is a temporary thing. the problem is though it is the metal line to the back of the car that is clogged. Do they sell replacement metal lines to the back. That is all i need I believe and then I can reconnect the rubber part.

Do this properly, save money, and use the existing tube!

Take a broken clutch cable, or a few feet of accelerator cable (the braided kind not the solid kind) or even some bicycle brake cable. Make sure one end is slightly frayed, but not bushy. Put the other end in a drill, and voilá, instant roto-rooter. Make sure to spin the drill the direction that WON'T unwrap the braided cable. push it slowly while turning at a moderately slow speed and it should clear out the tube. This works well for clogged bathtubs as well, just use a larger frayed end on the cable.

I think I located it, Can someone help me identify its location. My understanding its toward the back of the car transmission,. it appears to be on top. so would I have access to it from under the back seat. or do I need to just spending time deep under the car and do it. How hard is it?

Woah there- hold your horses!

Have you made sure that the fuse container is attached to the positive side of the coil with a clean, rust free connection? I pulled a bug out of storage once, and wiggling the wire was all it took to activate the lights.

When you find the reverse switch(es) on the side of the trans, check to make sure the connections are clean, (and attached!)

THEN if it still doesn't work, check to see if the switches give 12v or not when the key is in the run position and reverse is selected. Don't leave the key in the run position for very long, or you'll burn your points/condenser.

THEN if it STILL doesn't pass the test, you can replace the switch(es).

In all seriousness, a google image search shows TONS of bugs with surfboards on their racks. Just make sure you get one that uses the roof, not the rear decklid like the snow-ski racks.

My aunt said it was the original paint. Also, when she gave it to me the transmission was busted so I had that fixed and now its actually running. It does stall quite a bit with a cold start but that's probably something I can have fixed later considering I live in California.
Can you tell if that is the orginal paint.

VW only used a cable control from 1968 through 1970. In 1968, it was like this:

<img src='http://members.trainorders.com/android/VW10/1968BugOilBathAirCleaner.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://members.trainorders.com/android/VW10/1968BugOilBathAirCleaner.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

In 1971, for one year only, they used a wax-style thermostat to open the flap.

<img src='http://members.trainorders.com/android/VW11/1971AirCleanerThermostat.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://members.trainorders.com/android/VW11/1971AirCleanerThermostat.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

Then they went to the vacuum style, which carried over once they changed to the paper-element air cleaner. This is how that vacuum style works:

<img src='http://members.trainorders.com/android/VW06/PreheatVacFlaps.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://members.trainorders.com/android/VW06/PreheatVacFlaps.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

Anyway, I'm happy with the 1300 smaller-style air cleaner I have on my 1600DP Baja, with just the "primitive" gravity/air-flow flap on the arm, with the smaller 25mm hose that I ran to the fitting on my heater box... (I sought out such a heater box at a swap meet many years ago just for this purpose)

<img src='http://members.trainorders.com/android/VW10/BajaPreheat1300Filter.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://members.trainorders.com/android/VW10/BajaPreheat1300Filter.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Yes 30° BTDC would be WAAAYY too high at idle!! We said several times to do it at 30° WITH THE ENGINE REVVING!

Another thing, if they are swearing its supposed to be timed at 7.5° then ask them why there is no 7.5° mark on your pulley. HMMMMMMMMM.....

OK here is what I would do. Set it at 30° BTDC at 3500-3800 RPMs (remember to DISCONNECT the vacuum hose and plug it when doing this.) Then let it fall back to idle and see where the timing ends up there. If it is less than 7.5° BTDC at idle, or anywhere between 0 and 7.5°, just leave it. If it is anything MORE than 7.5° BTDC at idle, then redo the timing at idle at 7.5° which would be a good idle time AND will get you as close to 30° BTDC at full advance as possible without going too high.

You may even repeat this procedure 2 or 3 times to get what YOU feel would be the perfect timing.

Compromise is the name of the game.

Really, the current that goes through the gauge is small, nothing like what would cause something to smell "burnt". Hmm.. maybe some previous owner might have rescued some parts out of a burnt-out shell of a VW?

A person I know on facebook contacted a friend of theirs that lives within 60 miles of my location and they sent me a text message said timing it at 30 was way too high. That I should time it at around 7.5 at idle. Someone else I talked too that heard the engine said that idle timing should be at that too, that the 30 was just when reving the engine.

I had adjusted the timing so that it was at 30 degrees at idle without reving so that's why I've been having problems.

So I thought maybe I've just been misunderstanding the instructions you've been giving me.

As for now it sounds a lot better. Just need to wait for those plug wires to get in. Got genuine German.

I changed the fuel gauge sender unit seal ring tonight, the new ring came with new bolts and washers so I swapped, and the old bolts all had a distinctive burned smell to them! What in the world could have caused that?? I can think of a dozen different reasons why the gas in the engine bay might smell like that, but bolts in the sender unit?? The gas in the fuel tank itself smelled pretty much OK and fuel gauge works fine.

Did some year's dizzys need no felt? Or did some not need this bit of oil, from time to time?

Exhaust sounds great! Not a typical Beetle sound, very mellow throaty sound. Was on the car when i got it, not sure where it came from. Took bug to a good ol boy aircooled shop (to pick up parts) and the mechanic loved it, said he hadn't seen one in awhile, called it a mando style.

Change all 4 plug wires, and then do the timing however you want- just about everyone on here has said 30° BTDC @ 3500-3800 RPMs, do the people telling you not to time it that way know that you re doing it @ 3500-3800 RPMs? That is full advance, be sure they know that. Or you can do it at idle at 5° ATDC and then rev it to 3500-3800 RPMs and see where your timing falls.
I am glad to hear your pinging was actually exhaust pipes

If your distributor and your distributor drive gear are setup properly the 009 rotor should point to the 5-o'clock position (as viewed from the rear). But if the drive gear has been installed incorrectly the rotor could point to any one of the other 11 positions (12 toothed gear). Did you happen to check that your distributor drive gear looked like this when you removed the distributor?

a little more information too add, so today when i got home from work i was playing with the steering wheel and the buzzing noise, i dont have to be driving but the key has to be on.

Also when i disconnected one of the plugs under the column and turned the wheel the buzzing stopped. i couldent get it too buzz. also it only seems to happen at about 9 or 10 oclock position wise. also the noise seems to be coming from inside the steering column area.

Hope this helps, where do i go from here? thanks

Plotch, I made huge progress... I found the problem. The heater channel on both sides were trashed and everything from tack weld to rivets were holding it together a dozen different ways. I will be replacing a lot of metal but I will have it apart by the weeks end I suspect!!

I will snap some pictures in the morning and post them tomorrow.

It was on the inside of the cylinder sorry for not clarifying but I'm calling a mechanic tomorrow because my car doesn't want to go in gear when the car is on so I am going to have him put the seal in and take a look at the oil leak I would do it myself but I'm graduating high school in a couple weeks so I have no time and I want it running well soon so I can go on a road trip! I will look for risers and maybe a deck lid with the slots this weekend at the bugorama I will keep you updated whenever I can
How do you route the hose FROM the expansion cannister in the trunk, OUT of the trunk and to the hard line going back to the charcoal cannister.
I am talking about a STANDARD beetle, not the supers with the expansion tube going across the back of the trunk. The expansion cannister sits along the right side fender well in the trunk. I cannot for the life of me figure where to route the hose, I see no holes for it. Does it just go under the gas tank somewhere? Everything else for the EVAP system is in place, this is the last puzzle piece. A picture would be amazing! Please don't post the diagram of the parts, that shows me nothing.

You probably just had the muffler loaded up with gas. As far as your max advance, I would suggest 28 to 30 as a good place to be. 36 is pretty high IMHO. And you idle is whatever it is. Usually will be somewhere between 5 and 10, but it really doesnt matter.

Thanks 77 Kafer. I ordered the exact 3M molding tape that you recommended, and I ordered a 1952-63 stainless steel, high quality chrome molding 7 piece kit, the 51-59 Wolfsburg white background hood crest with the mounting plate, and 2 high quality 67-79 chrome headlight rings through cip1 last night.

I'm going to try my best to use the 3M molding tape that you mentioned in order to tape on the the 67-79 plastic white clips all around the car and on the hood after I cut off all the pieces on the back of the clip, since I don't actually have any holes in my body for the clips to mount into. After I tape all the clips onto the car, I will then add some molding tape to the surface of each clip and then slowly tape the chrome pieces into place around the car. I know that these clips aren't the correct clips for this type of molding, but I can't use the actual pre-67 molding clips since they don' have a surface for me to stick the chrome onto. I plan on using extra clips to support these bigger chrome pieces to make sure that these pieces are stuck nice and flush to the car.

If these clips end up not working, then I guess I will have to use something else or another means to stick these to the car. I'm sure it won't be too challenging, although it will take much longer than just putting the thinner chrome pieces onto the car. I just really want the pre-67 moldings on my car. I think these chrome molding pieces will fit okay onto the car and line up alright. If not, then I guess I will have to customize them a bit to make them look right and fit.

I also plan to tape on the VW emblem and hood crest as well. Probably last, although I'm not too sure if they should go on first or not. Putting these on should not be too much of an issue I think.

I know there are differences in the hood, but I think that the center part where the chrome actually goes onto is about the same. I looked vigorously for hours at pre 67 hoods and hoods from the 50's and compared them to later model Beetles and Mexican Beetle hoods and seems like the chrome molding piece on the hood should go on fine. It might have to be shaped a little bit, not sure, but should go on well if I'm careful and work with it a little bit.

Any advice or extra info would greatly be appreciated guys!! Thanks!

I'm probably not going to be able to work on this until mid summer. I could not have the parts sent to me here right now so I had them sent to my parents home in the US for now. so I'm going to wait until they come over next or just have them send me the parts over here later when they send one of their care packages. Again, thank you all very much! Such a wonderful website.

My step-dad listened to my bug run. He covered the tail pipes and the rattle/pinging noise stopped, he says it's my muffler that's causing the sound.

Seems #4 spark plug wire has a break in the rubber of the line just before where it plugs into the plug. Guess this is causing it to miss every so often.

First thing, you should add your model and model year into your signature so you don't forget to add that info next time. It can be very useful.

Is this the connector? (Adding a pic when you are asking about some unknown "thingamajig" is also very useful)
<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/347420.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/347420.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

This is the connector that ran to the flywheel position sensor which was located on the right side upper flange of the case. It wires the sensor back to the rectangular diagnostic plug (seen in the background).
That's what I would think, air leak in the intake somewhere. At idle, shoot some carb cleaner at all the intake connections/gaskets (heads, center section ends, carb base) and see if any make the idle speed go up. Fire extinguisher ready of course. Also, you can take off the air cleaner and while idling, plug the carb with your palm. If the engine doesn't quit quickly, you probably have an air leak.

Digital multimeters routinely go on sale at Sears for $15 or less. I actually have three of theirs.

Absolute best piece of test equipment for this would be a DC ammeter, but would need capacity of like 100 amps or more, and those are expensive.

I know you said you had a standard and I'm sending a pic of a Super Beetle but it might give you a clue. The yellow plastic hose in this picture is the one that eventually connects to the charcoal canister mounted under the left rear fender.

The hose routes through the same holes that the brake lines and speedo cable go through. After it exits the car under the gas tank it connects to a metal gas line and runs across the front of the car under the front edge of the gas tank, it then turns to the rear and goes back under the passenger side.

Auto parts stores usually don't test sp gr. But, their testers do shave _how charge under load and maximun drain at the battery's rated amps. They are more likely to fudge toward the battery showing bad so they can make a sale. I would put a lot of stock in their test if they tell you it's OK -at least the ones in my area are pretty trustworthy.

You both have good designs and what I like about both of them is that you added an external switch to fill the carb bowl when it is empty. Many folks forget this and it is a pain to start the car if it has sat for awhile or you do a carb swap.

I don't think that I would call it normal. However, without all of the inforamtion, it is hard to give a correct diagnoses. A picture of your aircleaner setup would be helpful. Do you do a lot of highway driving? how long has it been since you last looked at the aircleaner?

You may have some blowby issues. Instead of buying a breather box, buy a long section of breather hose and loop it around the rear deck lid hinge brackets, then to the carb. This loop can act as an oil trap and not oil up the filter.

Isn't that what the battery test that most auto parts stores do for free show?

jusr putting a voltmeter on a battery doesn't show squat. It can be defective or under charged yet still show 12 volts. Batterys build up whats called a surface charge. To truly test a battery you need to measure the voltage when it is under a load. Most people can not afford these meters, so for the home user, a hydrometer is the next best thing. It shows the specific gravity of the acid/water solution (electrolyte) and is a good and inexpensive way of seeing what condition your battery is in.
