Hi guys, I need your wisdom once more

I have just bought a NOS period correct voltage regulator for my 54 preA (one of those large black regulators)

It is one like this http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1455731

I have problems to install it as the current regulator (a regular sixties voltage regualtor, I believe of VW origin) has 4 connections to connect with the 4 cables, whilst the new voltage regulator has only 3 connections.

Can anyone help??? Picture of where each of the 4 cables need to connect with the 3 connections would be of great help

Many thanks!!!!

Hello Fellow Enthusiasts!

I'm a proud owner of this Hazet 450 19/17 wrench.

As you can see on the photo the "Germany" marking is on the right front side of the Wrench next to the number "17". The backside looks perfectly normal like the front of a usual Hazet 450 series wrench i.e. same as the front (in my case) without "Germany". I know that this wrench is 100% authentic, all I can think of is a production error because I just can't find any information on this, but that's just a guess, all pictures of older Hazet wrenches I could find have "Germany" on the back.

Can someone provide any information on this particular kind of Hazet 450 wrenches? Many thanks!
My understanding is June/July 1952 was the first of the syncro gearboxes in production cars. The production notes on my car (11657 built Sept 1, 1952) shows no gearbox number but the chassis number before mine shows SY93, per Steve H.
As an artist they didn't permit me even to finger paint in school.

As a mechanic everyone attempts to keep sharp things away from me.

So, as are the pros here, I am awestruck by what you have achieved. And even my completely inartistic eye can appreciate the "Porsche" before the tagged wall.

Had already contacted Steve Heinrichs with regard to the lack of information on my Kardex. It seems quite common to have blank Kardexes. I hoped he would chime in and be able to answer the gearbox dating.

The gearbox, as I had stated could have been replaced, but why have I got a cranked shifter in the later position?

Roy, I'm afraid its not your old car. This chassis is a little earlier.

Maybe I'm 'speculating', but surely prototyping was done a number of months before production and I doubt someone on the production line would have had the money to own a Porsche.

No one knows how difficult this type of project is until they try it or at least watch it being done. No one can understand the frustrations that can get in the way, just on a technical level, a knowledge deficit when it's a first-time approach in building/forming a body like that......beyond even the basic design.

I just heard a few minutes ago that one of my 'heros' growing up, Harry Tidmarsh, had recently died. I had worked briefly with his old sidekick, Don Diehl, but I knew Harry from going to watch him work at his shop when I was a young man. Among bodies for BMW 507s and M-B 300SL Gullwings, Harry and Don used to make aluminum deep bas-relief full-size automotive prototypes for Alcoa to be used in trade shows and car shows of the '60s. Pretty heady stuff, impressive.

Fancy stuff that was hand-formed, planished and polished, not painted.

They were both fantastic metal fabricators, Harry better at gas welding aluminum, teamed up with Don, the better TIG welder of the two. I wanted to be just like them, but there are unteachable intangible aspects involved beyond "eye, artistic bent and feel" that may come from repetition IF one also gets "lucky." It is now, literally, a dying art.

Juan, to get this far is truly unbelievable. I am sincerely impressed. Keep it up, knowing you have a small group of fans here that are behind you 100%

(I also like the juxtaposition of the car posed against the graffiti'd wall.)

Best regards,

I have a question. It seems our late 52 car was only 10 digits after the first one that you mention.

Another question maybe an interesting one for me:

My brother owned for many years a 1951 Split screen 356. It had until it failed the VW crash box. We then had the 1952 car which we should of course restored. But in the 70's well.. But, we did remove the excellent full syncro 1952 gearbox and place this in the 1951 split screen with a few modifications to get it in.

In the last few years we have tried to locate the split screen just wishing to know where it is and if its still drivable. The chassis number of the 51 is
10964.

Is it just possible you have this car?? with our 1952 gearbox??

Worth the question
That's the other issue. I've got the original Kardex (copy) and there're no specification written about this vehicle. In fact its written 'No information available about this chassis'. The first registered owner is noted as an 'employee' of porsche.

The reason why I questioned this is my Sep '51 has a syncro box fitted. Of course this could be a later upgrade but the gear shifter is mounted in the later position and there is no evidence of a modification.

I can't identify the gearbox number as its mounted in the car.

According to Brett Johnsons's Restorer's Guide, the 519 Synchromesh began in October '52, which is the beginning of the 1953 MODEL YEAR. So, that means with chassis 11779. Of course, as with all things early, exceptions could exist....

Thank you Capt O, that is interesting. You learn something new every day. I seem to remember even my 1962 Austin mini did not have syncro on first gear? Or is my memory failing

Porsche actually prototyped the first fully synchro'd gearbox for VW/KDF in 1940/41, project number 126.

Cheers!
