Are they stuck from being rusty? If so, give them a squirt if penetrating oil and gently work them until they free up.

way back then we used to drill and tap the auto-stick oil pump for a full flow filter
now there are better ways to do the full flow filter

The pump will eventully sieze and break the shaft. Where it will break is a gamble. I wouldn't bet the farm on a $45.00 oil pump.

If you wanted it to look the part, with todays technology couldn't someone lazer etch a body number into a loose front apron and then weld it in place? I'd think a laser etch if you could get close to the font then a light sandblast to even it out after it's painted should look pretty good. I'm not suggesting anything dishonest just closer to original.

One other factor is that LEDs can have different fields of view (narrow angle and wide angle), which changes the way it shows. Wide angle LEDs will fill out the lens area better than narrow field LEDs. Plus the bezeling of the glass will be a big factor in spreading the light. So will the distance between the light and the lens. So basically, it's all subjective as to the look one wants.

I haves LED tail-lights with 5 HP LEDs on the face, and it spreads the light pretty well across the lens used on the ovals. But then, it's a repro, and not an original lens and there probably is a difference between the 2. But a customer in Colorado tried these lights out in his oval and said, "They Rock" He did remove the diffusers though and said that made a big difference. I can see a big difference also in my repro lenses with the diffuser removed.

I know what you mean by some LED's are different than others and all that.

I wasn't clear I guess. What I meant was that 14 LED's will not illuminate like 53 in the sense that with 14, it will look like a trucker taillight with very seperate points of light. Overall brightness may be the same, but it will not look very "VW-ey" in that sense.

It's not a brightness issue, it's a visual appeal issue.

To my amazement, after putting it on the little 6 volt battery charger for 1hr 40mins I set out for a spin, turned the lights on and BEEP. I kept going till I got to the market, purchased some distilled water, topped her off, cleaned the connections and I am now a honk-at-nite kinda guy thanks to your common sense tip.

Rear brakes. Took my 57 German drums to the machine shop for turning. That was the hardest part, coming to grips with removing metal from ancient relics which are in short supply. Then I took my shoes to shop for relining with thicker OG spec material to compensate for the larger drum size after turning, properly curved for 100%(nearly) contact. It took only a few clicks of the adjusters to set them up, and my hand brake cables now fit the handle correctly without any threads pushing past the adjuster nuts.

I had a body Shop suggest the same thing and I just want to be honest and do the right thing and the best solution for the restoration, so its good to hear the opinions.

I thought it would be more important to keep the Pan and Engine matching and replace the Body...any thoughts?

I got those cotton pickin' brake lights to work. Corroded wire and loose screws on the connectors were the culprits. A trip to Lowe's for some Dremel diamond coated bits really helped clean up the corrosion in the fuse box and scrape away corrosion on the wires. No, I didn't use the Dremel motor. I just used the bits by hand to get into tiny wire holes and terminals to "sand" them. Worked great. I bought 1 tapered and 1 straight bit. These will be used extensively to clean up other wiring connections. About $15 for the pair.

Exactly. They look like they'll work as taillights, but they don't show a pic of them lit up (that I can find anyway), and call me a skeptic, but I just can't see how 14 LED's will even compare to the 53 LEDs in Chips setup. I've seen them in person, functioning in a car, and the running lights look just like stock, only 'bright'. Then the entire taillight lights up with the brakes. It's incredible.

$100 vs. $150, you get a LOT more for your money with Chips setup IMHO.

Low battery, your car is running off the generator. The generator doesn't put out enough amps to feed the lights and horn at the same time. Charge your battery up and try again.

Yes the 6 volt horn and everything electric works great, until - I turn the lights on.
Then, horn is too weak ta beep. Anyone else ? Remedies?

NICE!!! Last Sept was the 10 year anniversary of my completion of that '57 BTW. 11,300 miles later it still looks fantastic. Especially in the bright sun (like yours!).

Gave her a wash and loaded her up with a bunch of toy trains. Heading tomorrow morning to Pasadena for a 3-day weekend toy train swap meet (660 mile round trip). Think I'll take a scenic route down Hwy 25 from Hollister to Paso Robles, then cut over to I-5 for the rest of the trip. I've been looking forward to this trip for the past 3 months. Finally gettin' out on the road and away from the office.

When I get back, I need to refurbish the semaphores. They're a little weak. Other than that, she's ready to go.

Find them. I've seen NOS 58-64 blades at swap meets go for $100 which I think is absurd. It seems as though split wipers come up for sale more often than ovals. Maybe some of the experts that are reproing things can make the rubber to insert into the metal blade section.

Hello-

I had to slightly bend my tube when I installed an aftermarket damper mount on my '57.

If you need one, the buggy places sell them for $10 - 15. There's one near the end of the page.

yeah i think the tube you buy from CIP 1 is straight, so you can bend it the way you need to to get around the damper... i haven't done it yet though...

On newer cars they moved the hole where the fuel line goes into the tunnel.

Some one makes a bolt on bracket to attach the damper to the beam tube, but I can't find it now.

Hey Motorhead, Real nice '55. Mine will look really similar, (horizon blue '57). What kind and where did you get the 6 volt relay?? I'm plotting to tap in about the same place although I have no idea what I'm doing. What color wire and what are your install specifics if you could. Appreciate any help on this. Don't want to blow my brake switch or blink along w/ blinkers. How to ground, picture of relay, ect.

Same thing just happened to me. I test fitted a new damper and it goes right on top of the fuel pipe. Im guessing they bend it to go around the damper.

Looks great for the price, but it looks kinda universal the way the LEDs are lined up. I can't wait to get a hold of one of the Chip B. productions. All the LEDs are placed specifically where they need to be, the way VW would've done back in the day if the technology were available.

Those grill lights are unique. I even tried selling VWs for about 7 months back around 1972 (almost starved to death) and never saw these on any of the VWs, new or used. Anyone actually ever have these or seen them? Wonder why they didn't catch on, especially on the older cars with the dimmer tail-lights.

Anyone think there would be some interest if I resurrected them with bright LED lighting? They could be red tail/brake lights, or just come on when the brakes are applied, or be amber for additional turn-signaling only. Let me have some honored "Samba-esque" opinions if you have any spare time.
