The most interesting thing to me other than the possible milage was the location of the service station that did the oil change: 2195 Junipero Serra Blvd. Daly City, CA. Daly City happens to be about 40 minutes north of where I grew up, Palo Alto, CA!

So, unless the car was out in the San Francisco Bay Area on vacation, this might have been a native California car! We'll see, I'm going to give the previous owner a phone call next week when he gets back from vacation to see what he might be able to tell me." so you've more than likely cross paths with this car before

Correct or not they ain't gonna like it! And you're probably going to have a very difficult time trying to convince them its correct.

About the only thing worse is trying to convince them the only brake light on a split is in the tag light housing!

I need some help please!

1. How do I replace the brushes on the thin slot generator? The thin slot restricts access to the small screw that secures the brushes in place.

2. Is it possible to replace the transmission cradle mounts without taking the transmission off the car?

3. The current oil cooler seems to be a later one, I would like to change it to the correct one, which I believe had a curved top? Is the one in the pic below, which is advertised as 25hp, correct? Were 25hp and 36hp coolers the same?

altewagen, hi, its nice to meet you. my names briyen. i drive my '54 everyday, everywhere. weekly drive is a minimum of 360mi. hell i've drove 150 today and i still need to get home from work. cars are meant to be driven.

Id have to say the vw community is getting more and more elitist in its sections. Split vs oval vs 58-64 vs 65-67 vs late standards vs supers. Thats not to mention the off road guys and the volks rod scene. Same in the bus world, barn door vs press bumpers vs small hatch vs large hatch vs low light bays vs late bays vs vanagons. How about the slammed vs stock debate or the patina vs hood ride. How about the good ole redneck vs nerd?

I get that we all love these cars for whatever reason but I think it all comes down to hanging out with a group that you feel comfortable with. Most people wont want to hang around someone that talks shit about everyone who isnt just like them or likes the same exact things. Being a mechanic I like to hang around people who work on their cars. We can discuss solutions to problems, share sources on hard to find parts, borrow tools, exchange fabrication techniques etc. Its hard to talk shop with someone who takes their car to a mechanic.

As we grow and evolve over time tastes change and minds open (hopefully). Being an individual is something most take for granted but one must also realize there are those who wish equal rights was just a bad dream.

Just because Hitler created the VW doesnt mean you have to think like he did!

Hey this guy is alright in my book
I just think its rad when somebody can keep one on the road and not write fat checks doing it. I love talking with shadetree mechanics or restoration guys running their biz. Sometimes people just knock other cars to make up for their own insecurities. Hey that's cool whatever.

Hi.

I have an 1961 356 engine which I want to fit into my early 55 oval. But just looking at it and measuring, I cant see it fitting in. I think I might have to cut some on the right side of the car to make the head/valve cover fit.

Does anyone have any experience, or pictures where you can see how much needs modifying and cutting.

My car is rustfree and never before welded, so I only want to cut ONCE! (I have now spent 2 years thinking about whether to cut or not ).

Any help is well appreciated, thanks.

I managed to remove mine. I kept filling the conduit around the sticking point with PB blaster, and working a wire (actually the clipped passenger side heater cable) under and around the stuck cable end. I worked from the back end, and would occasionally feed the wire in the front end to try to jiggle the stuck part loose. I inserted wire from both ends, tapped with a hammer, and kept feeding in the PB blaster. After a few hours, I got another wire to run around the blockage, and kept at it. I resisted the urge to try to pound it forward with a pin and hammer. After getting it to budge forward twice, it finally pulled reluctantly free with a steady, non-jerky pull with pliers. It looked like a Texas geyser coming up with all that penetrating oil. The fitting at the end had clearly just picked up enough grease and grit to wedge.

Hi quick question just doing some pre MOT checks on my 55 im just going through the lights and want to check my rear lights are wired correctly
they light up as follows

heart shaped top lense lights up when brake pedal is pressed
flat oval shape lense lights up when driving lights are on

is this correct?? seems a bit odd to me

h of where I grew up, Palo Alto, CA!~I'd love for it to be in drivable condition right now but it isn't which is ok.

I spent the past couple of days taking pictures after picture to fully document the current state and then just today stated taking her apart. Bagging & tagging and snapping pics as I go.

This will be my first auto restoration, ever.

I do however have experience restoring other collectables such as soda pop machines, gumball/peanut machines, jukeboxes, popcorn machines, antique telehones, antique radios (home & auto). So, I have some experience with the paint, powdercoating, chrome plating, zinc plating and sourcing reproduction and NOS parts except on a much smaller level compared to a 1956 VW Beetle!

tmb077 - Such a small world! how exactly do you know this car? Do you know any information about it?

Here's something that I thought was kind of cool. The odometer on the car reads 07053. I assumed that it must mean that the odometer has rolled once and the actual mileage on the car is 107052. I did some research and found out that the average mileage driven in 1956 was around 3500 miles a year. Based off of that and being told that it was only driven for 10 years until it was put into a barn in 1966 didn't make any sense. Even if you changed the average miles driven to 5000 per year over a 10 year period you still only get to the 50000 mile mark.

Hmmmm.... Without knowing exactly where the car came from and what it's full history is, I was left scratching my head. I mentioned earlier in this post that I was taking some pictures today. One of the pics I took was of the jamb side of the drivers door. There was Gulf Lubrication tag stuck to the door and I figured it was picture worthy. I couldn't make out any of the writing on the tag until I downloaded my pics and looked at them on the computer. Here's the tag:

Loren is helping me out with a Ghia pitman arm. The parts book speaks of an early arm and a later. This is likely a late 50s from his recollection.

The Ghia steering column must be a lower angle. This pitman arm allows you to rotate the steering box to line up with the steering column while keeping the tie rod angles.

The Alken articles I read talk about needing a Ghia pitman arm likely for the same reason. Since I have to mount the tank backwards I think it will hit the column and need "banged in" to clear. I don't think this will help with that situation.

This Beetle sketch shows the angle of the steering box with no angle.

Hi guys,

I have a feb 55 New Zealand CKD car that needs an exterior repaint.
Being a NZ CKD car, it was painted with locally supplied paint and our colours were slightly different from the german/australian ones.
I am having a hard time deciding which of the 2 colours I have narrowed it down to, to use.
I have a birth certificate for it but it didnt not state colour as it was CKD
I would like some input...

The colours I think it could be, are Silver Granite, and Shetland Grey

My dilemma is that Silver Granite is meant to be a Vert only colour, and from my research, it never had the option of Green interior... However, it is correct for a 54/55 car.

According to the samba archives, Shetland Grey is a 57/58/59 colour so is a bit late for my car. BUT, it DOES have the option of Green interior. and I have a pic found on the net of another car thats supposedly Shetland Grey sporting green interior...

Upon furthur research, I found some info saying Shetland Grey was available on earlier cars around 54/55 but mainly verts...

They are both nice colours so its a hard decision, but I am leaning toward Shetland Grey.

The other possibility is that it was painted a Jowett colour as they shared the factory with VW in the Auckland assembly plant. There has been rumour that they interchanged colours...
Jowett has a 1953 colour called Athena grey... I cant find any good pictures of it though.

There is a high chance I am going to hand strip the interior red respray and under the hood, engine bay etc and sport the original paint, so should I just polish up a few sections and get the paint shop to colour match it?
If I do this, then I still dont know what colour to "call" the car. If its a just a custom mixed colour match, then saying its one or the other would be wrong...

What would you guys do? I have spent hours upon hours researching this site and I would like to order some paint soon.

Toe that changes drastically through the suspension range WILL cause that "floaty thing." It is the most common issue when people lower their VW.

I am using rhino ramps under the wheels. Yeah I'm considering dropping the engine.

Say, does anyone know how to replace the brushes on the thin slot generator? I've replaced them on later generators with ease, but this thin slot restricts access to the small screw that secures the brushes in place!

I am curious if you found a solution to this? My driver side cable with the end attached has stopped solidly, about 4 inches in. I have filled the tube with PB Blaster and will try the accelerator cable on a drill tonight, starting from inside. I'll also try using compressed air to see if I can get some of the dirt and grease to blow out with the PB.

If you found a solution, though, I'd be really glad to hear. I am just now reassembling the car after paint, and this is the last thing I wanted to happen.

So, this past weekend was quite a good one for me. Not only was It Father�s Day weekend which meant many hugs and kisses from my 4 kids but it was also the weekend that I re-entered the Vintage VW world!

A little bit of backstory to start off with. My father owned a 1966 VW Beetle��Until I came along! With the addition of another child, my family outgrew the VW and it was sold sometime in 1976 in lieu of a Pea Green Datsun Station Wagon (yuck!). A few years later, my father lucked into another 1966 Beetle and couldn�t pass up the opportunity and brought �Das Ugly Bug� home.

We owned it until 1990. That was the year that my father passed away and also the year that we ended up having to basically give it away due to downsizing and moving into a condo (no room). I also had to get rid of my 1970 Type III Fastback that had been given to me for the same reasons. Letting go sucked, big time.

My father and I had spent a lot of quality (and not so quality time!) working on the old �66, going to VW shows & swap meets. The �lifestyle� was ingrained into me to say the least! I ended up enlisting in the Navy in 1991 and never looked back. Living a fairly transient lifestyle for 20 years didn�t leave much time or space for any large projects, especially a car.

Flash forward from to now. I am now retired from the Navy, work in the electronics industry and have settled in sunny Southern Indiana. The most important stuff, I have an awesome family, a historic house and a GARAGE all to myself! I always told myself that someday I would get back into VW�s when I was finally settled. Part of it was for nostalgic/emotional reasons of the fun and memorable experiences spent with my dad the other part was because of my unfailing love for vintage VW�s!

So��

I had been hunting for my �first� VW for quite some time, probably for a year or so but more serious in the past few months. I originally started out looking for a 1966 Beetle but as my search increased my desire for ONLY a 1966 decreased. It also became apparent that the US Midwest wasn�t kind to VW�s like my home-state of California was! The few cars that I did find that were affordable for my budget were that way for a reason if you catch my drift. A lot of the VW�s I was finding were WAY past replacing the pans & heater channels and in my opinion weren�t right for me. The search continued.

About a week ago, I stumbled on a Craigslist ad for a �1956 VW Beetle�. I looked at the pictures and read the write-up and called the owner. We spoke for about 30 minutes as he described the car as it sat and we also talked about my history with VW�s and his. He owns an auto garage in NW Ohio and has specialized in air & water cooled VW�s for 40 years. He also mentioned that he used to race souped-up bugs and had even been featured on the cover of Hot VW�s magazine! It was great to know that this �56 he was selling was in the right hands.

The L331 Horizon Blue 1956 Oval Window Beetle had spent all of its 57 years in Ohio with 47 of those years in a BARN! The last year it was plated and driven was 1966. He told me that most of the fender damage was due to rough treatment in the working barn that it had been stored in by the previous owner and not hard treatment during its roughly 10 years on the road. He had purchased it with the intent of someday restoring it but had decided to divest himself of it in the name of scaling down his collection.

After some planning and negotiating with my wife (LOL!) and acquiring a trailer, Myself and my 5 year old son set off on an adventure last Saturday to �just take a look at� the Oval Window Beetle. It took us about 4 hours to reach the shop where the car was stored. The owner�s son met me there right on time to show us the bug. The first thought that went through my mind when I first saw the car was, �I might be buying an Oval Window today!!!�

After inspecting the car for quite some time I felt comfortable getting down to the business of purchasing the bug. A deal was struck, money was exchanged and the bug was loaded onto the car hauler and strapped down in anticipation of the trip back to its new home.

My 5 year old son had a blast! The yard behind the shop where the bug was located was filled with all sorts of car parts, a few wrecked cars, old Cub Cadet riding mowers and other VW�s that kept him busy looking & touching and just being a little boy. The shop also had two resident junkyard dogs that kept watch, a Rottweiler and possibly the largest German Sheppard I had ever seen in my life. Turns out they were both super-friendly and had been put in the shop to keep them from licking my son into oblivion!

We made the journey home with no problems, only a little rain but nothing else to speak of. My son and I with the help of a friend got the Beetle unloaded and parked in front of the garage. He was so excited to check it out, sit in it, touch the engine, and so on. It was fun for me to see him having so much fun. I broke out a can of window cleaner and some paper towels and we gave the windows a quick bath. Shortly after that, my wife and other 3 kids arrived home. My oldest child is a 15 y.o. girl, her initial reaction to it was �It�s SO CUTE!!� My wife and other son (3 y.o.) were both all smiles as well.

I done good.

So the fun begins! I plan on doing a complete body-off restoration of this gem. It has its share of problems but that�s half of the fun. My wife has already informed me that she loves the color and that it will not be painted any other color than the original Horizon Blue! That makes my job *easy*!

Far easier to just undo 4 17mm nuts and a couple of heater connections at this point and drop the engine.

You will certainly need a transmission output seal and main crank seal if it has sat so long without running.

Drove 793 miles over the course of 3 days for show in CT. I was able to maintain 70mph with a stock 36hp. Throw a significant hill at me and I'd dip down to 50mph

Poor alignment angles will not casue a "floaty feeling"

The car will either pull to one side (if camber is dramatically different side to side) Caster differences side to side are the biggest cause of this condition but with a beam front end it isn't really aplicable unless the beam is bent. You have a new beam so hopefully it's not bent!!!

It can be twitchy on uneven or on loose surfaces (too much toe out) do to the wheels fighting to go in either directions or be very stable but scrub tires off (too much toe in) or if the there is too little caster will wander around the road at higher speeds and feel very unstable.

Poor tie rod agles will give you a lot of bump steer, that is every time you hit a bump the car will try and turn itself in one direction or the other. The further from level the tie rods get the worse this effect will be.

Bottom end has been dummy built to check everything clears, which it now does.

All striped down for final clean up then it can be built up and measured for the custom J&E pistons.

I swapped out the rusty bolt on the center of the roof rack for a stainless one. It is the one that is under the lock cylinder, and it adjusts the tension to secure the rack to the roof rails. The cost for each bolt was $1.70. Seems like something the manufacturer could have done.

It's a 58 or 59 judging by 3 things: ice pick door handles narrow it to 56-59, but add in the back window and the skinny peanut turn signals and its narrowed down to 58-59. Although the one thing is that throws me is the dash handle. If its not aftermarket, and was factory, the car could be an earlier 60

Look under the back seat and see if it had a booster fan installed in place of the heater muffler.
