I will try to get some pics and post tonight. I think there needs to be a good reference thread for every tiny detail on these cars.. and now we have one for the hood release tube!!

wow I have never seen an ashtray block off plate like that before. That was pretty cheap by Volkswagen back in the days, that they even opted out on an ashtray in their standard versions. I thought everyone was smoking during that era.
I don't see really added $$value to the block off plate being in the dash though, because you can't tell the difference from the actual ashtray being in there...and as we all know, zwitter ashtrays are pretty rare to start with.

My early but after Jan '54 Std oval already has the usable ashtray and it is 100% bone stock never touched.

Yes there is a difference in the oval versus split decklid. Do a search in the gallery and you'll find pictures. The license light hole and design is the primary difference.

No, I do not believe there is a difference between split and oval decklid mounting brackets

I have a few questions to anyone that can answer them. First is there a difference between a Split window W deck lid and an Oval window W deck lid?
Next, what is the difference between the deck lid mounting brackets on a Split window and later beetles? Are the split window mounts smaller? I am talking about the mounting brackets that are U shaped.

Ah, that is an excellent question. According to my Aug 1954 parts book, the ashtray housing was redesigned for Jan 1954, with the familiar chrome surround, part # 111 857 521B. Rev A for this part could have been the non-chromed version for Standards, but is not listed. This leaves the 111 857 521 as the original version used up to Jan '54, which has a different mounting method. So, my guess would be that early Oval Standards up to Jan '54 could have had the Zwitter style block-off plate as well. Someone on this site must have a Standard Oval from that era, that we could check?

Interestingly, the Zwitter ashtray block-off plate is not listed in the parts book either......well, at least I could not find it.

I have this dashboard and someone asked if it is for sale.
But first I just want to know what at least it is.

OK, the big holes beside the speedo where added later, but you see the zwitter typical ashtray front without chrome frame and without handle.

The two little holes are later selfdrilled to hold something.

But the rear is very unusual.
The front is just a flat blind. Held by three turned latches.
Unmoveable.
