I am restoring a 1952 standard, and had the chance last month to buy a driving 1959 ragtop euro standard. The brakes have not changed in that period, that's for sure.

From your question, I assume you want better brakeperformance. But good adjusted cablebrakes have the same performance as good hydraulic ones. So you'd better give them a good treat!
Most of the time it is just the lack of adjustment of the brakes, because they require more maintenance than hydraulics.

But I can name you one solution to "upgrade" your system: work with later hydraulic VW model brakeshoes that are wider. But these will only fit by carfully cutting out your drums.
I saw a German standard last year september, with a small caravan on a meeting. The owner explained me this type of upgrade, to be able to drive safely with his 400kg caravan and loaded oval for the holidays.

One thing will not change, the calf fitness you receive when applying your cable brakes. This is the only comfort advantage I see when comparing to hydraulic brakes. You gotta love the system (and the system will love you)

We set off from the UK tonight at to get the ferry for 4am, stopping in Brugge 2 night then meeting with BBT and heading to the show. See everyone over the weekend, we`ll be in a grey/blue Bora on chapayne coloured AMG wheels.

Im looking forward to getting more int the aircooled scene again, seeing VW38 and more really nice vintage VW`s

I have a Jan '54 rhd. Not a switter but only a few months different. RHD cars park the opposite side to LHD and the arms are bent in the opposite direction. The cam inside the motor is mounted 180deg opposite so the park is opposite. The components of the motor are the same but they are assembled differently so it is possible to convert an LHD motor to a RHD motor. (The same but different). For interest sake I believe the side the wipers park this is a legal requirement on modern cars and I have had to change it when doing a conversion.

progressive refinements shows the "new style" parking zwitter ones. (one speed only) being different for export models.... thus the different looks maybe?

old split photos I see have them parking with the drivers side arm in the middle down low, maybe larger wiping angle means different direction?

LOL Bob, I was just telling someone here about that windshield seal and how it washes the car's inside... I'm bringing some duct tape anyway...

And yes, I'll come early and get behind you. Why? That '49 has atrocious (cable) brakes. As I said in '11, if I crash into anyone, it will have to be a car that you own!!!!! (The blue '48 has much better brakes...) .

Dec '52 owners manual shows them parked on the right. I'd use that as a reference....

I'm all amped up! Around here we are getting ready to head to the airport this afternoon to head over to Brussels, landing on Tuesday and going straight to BBT for beers and then a long "jet-lag" induced snooooze. As Bob mentioned above, our group will hang out and assist for the next few days at BBT in any way that Bob will let us. Bob and his crew always put on an awesome Thursday afternoon party, and the streets around BBT will be full of wicked old VWs from all over Europe and many hundreds of happy party-goers. Thanks again Bob and your crew for all that you do to start off the H-O weekend with a huge bang! The caravan to H-O will be incredible!

Alright, bags are packed, got my wallet and passport, here we go! We'll see you very soon Bob, as well as everyone else who is going!
