The Tempo Vinking has a small Heinkel-engine inside, so it need the loovers behind the doors. The Matador is lager and has a watercooled Austin A35 engine. Without loofers...

Incredible! Just watched the whole video. You can feel the thrill of this great discovery!

Love the part from inside the car at the end:

<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/621092.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/621092.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

Can you imagine driving along and discovering a sight like that? I am sure every VW nut dreams of this (or rather discovering the car in unmolested condition )

So who made this vid and are they in some way related to the people from the Lithuanian VW club who found the car? Can we get the whole story?

Oh, and I said it before but again: Christian your the best!

the video is a mix of german in the beginning and russian (latvian?) in the end. I think the germans are saying "look what we found" and then they comment about the snow. i think!
Where did you hear german words. The only german noice is the german sheepdog talking with a cow. The vidio is absolutly cool and I am just wondering what keywords have been used to find it at youtube;-)

My opinion, People should know what they are selling before they post it up on here or Ebay. Many people were "inquiring" about this car and he told everyone that someone was buying it (I am guessing the guy from TN, not sure though) and now it's on Ebay?

The left one with sharp edges I found late eighties from CMC-Kenya, a VW dealer since fifties to E.A. There were several hubcaps and some split/oval era stuff under heavy dust. So I don't believe it could be any kind of repro. The right one is much later found from a VW dealer here in Finland and has those three small nubs and 2 x holes for remove.
Those on the left are bit lighter and the chrome is really thin and gets easily corrosion and inside is painted with a semigloss silver.
I'm willing to rechrome those left ones ( especially if those could be like more originals ) but need to know the best workshop here in EU directive controlled wunderland

I'm not so sure that either WW or WCM has the proper rubber pieces for the splits. Seems like the proper pieces for doors, hoods and decklids are spread amongst about three or four vendors.

Zwits are cool since they were only produced for a short period; they have some unique things about them.

So whats the market like for them now? I have no clue as to what mine might actually be worth, but i figured I would go with it.

I don't think my sale counts, it's to a friend.

As far as standard/export goes, it's kinda the same as busses. Deluxe models got the ivory knobs and stuff, have alum. trim. Standards got the black knobs and stuff, no trim, and had cable brakes.

obviously this car is nothing new. it has been around for some time and i'm sure it was just pushed aside as a regular old beetle until ze germans came along.

the video is a mix of german in the beginning and russian (latvian?) in the end. I think the germans are saying "look what we found" and then they comment about the snow. i think!

i wonder how many old VW's are still in parts of the eastern bloc

Just looking at the photobucket photo's and there seem to be a lot of 'standard' parts.
Those with the '51 and later deluxes often forget this, as they have the door switches also. '50 and earlier, and later standards do not.

I always thought that switch was kind of funny. Want the wipers on AND the dome light on at the same time? Sorry, VW decided you mustn't do that.....

I think these wings will be parfect for the serious restorer ,even if there are some minor differences .There is nothing worse than a pre67 car with those shapeless repros .I have seen many a nice resto spoiled repro wings.
As for accuracy even vw wings varied slightley even from left to right .

I have a couple of genuine wings a few years apart which have slight profile differences around the headlamp .I would guess as the presses got older the pressing would change slightly and the curve around the headlamp seems the most affected. The reality is though is that unless you made a gauge you would not notice .

I am restoring a couple of oval wings and can say that its not easy .There is a lot of stress in the wing so if it has been bumped or the lip is creased that exact curve around the headlamp is forever lost. That to me makes these wings look a very attractive option.
1. In regards to the 4 lights on the speedo pod, the two on the right are for the generator (green) and oil pressure (red), but the two on the left in my car are not wired to anything. Can someone clarify what the two are for? i think one was for high beams, possibly? and no idea concerning the other.

On the left side, the top is a light (red) to let you know you have your turn signals on. The bottom light (blue) lets you know your high beams are on.

Quote:

2. Secondly, also on the speedo pod, there are two switches, as you know, one for headlights/parking lights (right side). And the other for the wipers. On my wiper switch, only one side of the switch works. when i toggle the switch to the right, the wipers do their thing. But toggling the switch to the left has no function. And i have no idea what, if anything, it was supposed to do...lol

One way turns the wipers on, the other way turns the dome light on. (dome light is located between the split window)
the repro on the left is actually a bit closer than the repro on the right, but both are obviously wrong.

a real split era hubcap should:
have none of the three "nubs" seen on the edge of the rim of later caps.
have a thicker bar between the V and the W.
have a matte chrome finish in the indented part of the logo, but a smooth chrome finish elsewhere.

a true NOS cap from the '50s should have a foil VW sticker on it like most of your better NOS chrome parts from the '50s.

split hubcaps are pretty much unobtainium. the early chrome was not the best quality, hubcaps are easily damaged and they are easy to change, so most cars lost their original caps along the way. in my observations, 10 out of 10 restored split beetles at any given show will have later hubcaps.

anyone ever seen an original split era hubcap for sale?
anyone have real split era hubcaps on their car?

Hello all,
This serves as my first post here, so let me start. About 6 months ago i picked up my 51 split deluxe sunroof and have been searching through the forums and cant find my answers....as simple as i know they are...

1. In regards to the 4 lights on the speedo pod, the two on the right are for the generator (green) and oil pressure (red), but the two on the left in my car are not wired to anything. Can someone clarify what the two are for? i think one was for high beams, possibly? and no idea concerning the other.

So as simple as the questions are, at the same time, i havent been able to find the info on them. Thanks for your time, and thanks in advance for any clarifications!

With the rarity of nos split and oval wings now, anything that has no rust will automatically be a repro

That is part of the unfortunate problem as I see it. That puts the onus on the seller now to prove the part is original lest he/she sell it for a "repro" price.

mrsherbie wrote:

and anyone who buys a repro sold as nos just has'nt done their homework first.

And you think that will happen? NNNNNOO!

That of course after the seller has ground off any mark the manufacturer has put on it....

I do believe though that no matter how accurate a repro, there will always be a way to tell it from an original. I know a few people in this hobby who just love to get into all the "details" of parts.......

In my era of Beetles ('62) the original hubcaps have a very small serial or part number (not sure which it is) stamped on the rim. I don't know if it's the same for split windows.

Since 1956 the german number plates are white with black letters, up to 1997, they got a blue corner like all european number plates. Dealers or garages are allowed to get "red number" they could use for different cars. The numbers started with a letteercode for the district (for example "OB" for "Oberhausen" and a couple of numbers, starting with a "06xxx". Sincde a few years, vintage car collectors are also allowed to use an own "red number"and could use it for historic cars wich are elder than 30 years. Theese numbers are looking very similar, but have the nubers "07xx". If you want to dreve a car without a regular redistration, it was able to rent a red number from the gouverment. It was allowed to drive with this red number for maximum 5 days. These red numbers have the "04xx"-code. After the using of the numbers, you had to bring the numbers back. The problem was, that not all numbers came back, especially after the iron wall felt down. And nobody - like the police - could see at what time the registration and the inssurance for it has ended. So the gouverment changed the rental-red-numberplates into oneway-plates, where everybody could see the final time of the plates. These plates are white with black letters and a yellow corner in the left corner. Inside, you coul see the date. The code is the same like for the old red rental numbers: The first for the district ("E" for "Essen", a large city in the neigborhood of Oberhausen) and the "04xx"-number.

For international export, it is also able to buy an export-number. This number has a red left corner. In the past, Westgermany used white, oval numberplates with black letters for Export.

How do I know which one is an original hubcap. I have a set from a dealer bought 15 years ago and now I have one called NOS, but there are many differences. There where propably several aftermarket ones available at VW dealers shops as well, but when we can say this is a repro and this is not?

But I already knit

You really think thats going to happen? hmm

thom wrote:

I don't care about a stamp

I think a stamp is irrelevant in this case, history has proved that so far no repro anything has ever been identical to any 60yr old og part ( especially a wing, being one of the most complicated vw parts to repro anyway)

With the rarity of nos split and oval wings now, anything that has no rust will automatically be a repro and anyone who buys a repro sold as nos just has'nt done their homework first.

But I also think that anyone who stops many people fitting those junky black brasilian wings to any pre67 car is a hero!

Brezelwerks wrote:

It may be eventually that the focus on the most sought after cars will not only be the prettiest cars available, but also the best documented original condition cars available.

Yes, terribly I already find I walk past most fully restored cars automatically and there are very few I would even want to own.
Very interesting video find.

Somebody sure knew that it was a very different cross over because they spent a good deal of time focusing in on the modifications.

This story is wonderful. Can you imagine what might have happened to this car if it had been removed by someone else?

Keep up the good work Christian & Team, and Undis, please thank your man in Lithuania again for allowing us all to be involved from such a fantastic beginning......

Would you be so kind as to post an update every few months? Your die picture makes it easier to wait. Add me to your list for a set of fronts. I'll wait a year or more if necessary. If you can put yours next to an original and it is difficult to tell them apart, aside from the funky green color, that is what I want. No more fixing rusty and mangled fenders!
