The slotted adjusters are tapered. They attach to the brake shoes only one way. If they are installed incorrectly then the shoes are out to far.

Do you have the tubes inside the tunnel? How about the ebrake bracket?

If you have the tubes and the bracket then all you need is a handle and the cables. if you don't...you might have to go custom.

Either way switching over to rear discs won't make it any easier.

I have the 110 volt Hobart 135. It will not weld .120 DOM with any penetration. Good for sheet metal or 11 gauge IMHO. I purchased the Hobart 187 220 volt welder with gas and it does a very good job on anything you would need to weld up to 3/8". They don't make the 187 Hobart anymore...It was replaced with the 190 Hobart. Spend a little extra now and you won't be wishing you had a better welder.
I personally would never trust a 115 volt welder to weld any cage that I need to trust my life with. You will not get 100% penetration with .120" wall tubing. Spend the money and get a 220 volt welder that can weld full 1/4" with 100% penetration. A welder is a piece of equiptment you will have for many years and you can make extra money to pay for it by helping your friends with their project.

Get the Hobart 140 (Model# 500559)... Be sure its latest model with 5 heat ranges instead of previous 4 heat ranges, it also has improved wire feed block assembly and better design ground clamp.... Once you switch to shield gas you will never want to go back to flux core wire....

http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/hobart-handlerreg%3B-140-mig-welder

Check local TSC store...

Wow save a whole $10 at Northern tool....

Though the 140 does everything I need to do (at the moment) if your pocket book can stand it go with a 220v model like the 190... It is easier to turn own the voltage/amperage, but if its just not there its hard to turn it up... And you never know when you may need the extra heat...

I want an e-brake in my buggy, however the buggy has none of the components - not even the handle. Is there a complete kit available? I can't seem to find one.

Would it be better to buy a rear disk brake kit with an e-brake?

As long as your cage isn’t using thicker than 1/4 inch you should be good...

But yes I would get the 140, bigger is better! Hobart is a great welder; I have a Miller, both made by the same company in the USA FTW!

And get the shielding gas setup, so much nicer to weld then fluxcore.

We have a Hobart 135 at the shop that I used to do all the fabrication work and all the work on my own cars, including cages. Very good welders. Thinking of picking one up for home.

Good to know. That's what I was looking for. I don't know if I will build the cage myself, but I figure I might have at least have to weld seat belt mounting points to it or do other modifications at some point to it & was worried about it handling the thickness of the roll cage.

I have the 125. Get the 140 and get shield gas for it. wvbowtieman bought the equalivant to the 140 (prior model to the 140), added the gas and I did his complete roll cage with it. It is a fine welder for building buggys with.

I am actually going this afternoon to pick up my steel for my Sears Rascal build. It will get a 2 X 2 boxed perimeter. This will provide a 1 inch raise in the body, (body lift) and the 1 inch down that a normal pan has. 0.120 wall so it will act as a structual member, give a great place to attach a roll cage to. It will receive a flat floor instead of putting in new pan haves. Makes mounting seats easier. I am also getting 1 X 1 tubing to go across the Nepol Hat and 1 X 2 to go across the rear section. Floor will be 14 gauge, all other roll cage and boxed/rectangle tubing is 0.120 wall.

thanks Joe,

OK got it.

I am planning on splicing in the ends of the napolean hat. I will be using some DOM tubing around the pan perimeter to reinforce the pan and provide a body lift. I havent decided on a size yet. I saw a thread where you did the same thing with vwbowtieman that looked great. this tubing should overcome any structural deficiencies caused by the thinner metal on the napolean hat.

for the bat wing, well, I guess she is gonna have to come out. As much as I would like to keep the OE metal, it is what I cant see inside the head that worries me.

lets see what she looks like when she comes back from the blaster..........

thanks again.

Yes, "Bat Wing" is the bottom frame head plate. Different one for the L&P -vrs- the Ball Joint. The after market bat wings are decent, they are thick metal and come pretty close to fitting.

I agree on the Nepol Hat. They are thin and do not fit very well. I buy them and graft in the parts that are rusted badly, (curved areas, flat areas I use proper thickness sheet steel).

Chances are any used frame head you get will also need repair in some area.
I'm hoping not to have a doorstop/anchor that would get annoying REAL quick. I can handle a rebuild, but $900 in new cases ontop of everything else is not what I had in mind. If it comes to that I will still do it, just take longer than desired.

thanks Joe. so that is my dilemma. cut it all out and replace it all, or leave as much of the OE metal as I can and just repair the bad parts. this goes for the napolean hat as well.

By bat wing I assume you mean the frame head bottom plate?

If I could find a good quality OE bottom plate then I would love to remove the whole thing and just replace it. No brainer.

Of course, the one i saw at my local VW shop had thinner metal than OE.

The napolean hat I bought from there had thinner metal as well.
So I bought another napolean hat from another shop and it was the same POS.

so where is a good shop where I can get good quality parts for this repair?

my third option is look for a replacement frame head at a junkyard. No luck with this so far.

stumped.................

thank you all for your help
When I get them in that shape, I usually replace the full "bat wing" and move on. For me, it saves time and then I know I have gotten all the weakness out of an important structural frame area.

so I am thinking on cutting the bad metal out to check out the integrity of the steel inside the frame head. If it looks OK, then my plan is to fill in the holes with weld and then weld the cut piece back in. Put some POR-15 inside maybe?

I have sheet metal I can reinforce this area with.

Anyone have experience with this kind of repair?

started to address the bottom of the frame head. there was a small rust hole on one side of the bottom framehead.

so I decided to wire wheel it and see what I am dealing with. Not exactly what I was hoping for. all these dimples showed up in the metal after hitting it with the wire wheel. a poke with a screwdriver, and the hole in the metal was complete. then another, then another until finally:

<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1064289.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1064289.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

the rest of the bottom of the frame head looks OK. went around with a hammer hitting all over and the metal seems pretty strong. Just this one spot is hurting.

So I said enough of this and sent the pan, along with a few other items, on to my local media blaster. no more yellow front beam!!

I want to know what I am dealing with and don't want any more rust surprises.

back of the pans had some rust issues too.

One side I was able to just fill in with weld and a small piece of sheet metal
<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1064291.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1064291.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.

the other side I had to cut out the bad metal.

<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1064292.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1064292.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Swap the drums left to right and see if the problem follows the drum. Also, I would double check that you don't have an adjuster installed upside down.

BL3 That was my thought as well.

We have a 1947 Stinson Aircraft in the family and it has a Franklin engine in it. The short story is we just overhauled the engine a year or two back and have NEVER cut the crankshaft. We installed new bearings that were just starting to wear after nearly 1300 Flight Hours and 30 years. Much of the rest was inspected and reused as well including the cam, gears, etc.
This stuff is tougher than we think. I just didn't want to throw away good german stuff in favor of Chinese stuff.

My rule of thumb is, if you have something that old taken apart already just replace with new. They are not expensive. FAGs are about $10.00 for inners and about $25.00 for outers.

First, if there is a difference in feel in the r/f wheel, then it probably is affecting overall drivability; even braking. How do the bearings look? Clean them really well and look carefully at the surfaces of the rollers. If there are ANY scratches on them, these bearings need replacing. Is there a badly worn area where the seal rides? or where the bearing rides? If there's a worn area for the bearing, you take up all the thrust of that bearing when you tighten the retainer and will cause a sticking condition. That spindle needs work if that's true.

I guess I'm a little confused or a little too old school, but why put the larger cylinders on the rear THEN put the smaller ones back on the front? I'm not a purist or anything like that, but neither am I a friction systems designer or automotive engineer. Over the lifetime of the cars, we couldn't count the billions of dollars spent structuring the VW braking system, testing the results, re-designing it, etc., then we want to go and change it in our driveway.

If you want larger cylinders on the rear, then just do the rear and leave the original brake design alone on the front. Or, I could see adding an adjustable proportioning valve if the body structure is heavily modified, such as for off-roading, dune buggies, kit cars, hand-crafted specialty VW's, etc.

I am not doubting anyone's reasoning for reversing the wheel cylinders, but I haven't researched these reasons. Is there enough data to show that the braking is more effective, it fades less, reduces wear, or is any safer than the original design?

Ball and roller bearings are case hardened, when they even start to wear they rapidly self destruct. If there's a flaw on the bearings, you'll see the damage. Thoroughly clean and inspect them with a magnifying glass. If you see any defect at all on the balls or races, they're bad. If you don't see anything (pitting, galling, grooving, spalling, brinelling), they're fine to re-use and likely better than the replacements you'll be sold. They actually re-use the bearings when they overhaul jet engines which have turned millions of more times in much more severe conditions.

I am building a similar buggy now with a 34Pict 3 and was wondering if you would share the carb jet info with me ?

LeeVW wrote:

You may or may not be able to use one of the distributors out of the FI engines. You would need to determine the strength of the vacuum signal you get from whatever carb setup you plan to use, then see if it matches what the distributor requires in order to actuate the vacuum advance.

For what it's worth, I'm running a stock cam 1776 in my buggy with a rejetted Solex 34PICT-3 carb and an SVDA distributor from Aircooled.net. The engine is extremely smooth and has plenty of low end power. It's all done making power by 4,000 RPM, which is fine because it's a buggy with an off-road focus and it runs between 2,500 and 3,500 RPM most of the time anyway.

With a 110 cam, you would benefit from a set of duals, but keep in mind they typically have a lower vacuum signal than a stock single. The cam profile also affects this. Most dual carb setups used on ACVWs just run a mechanical-only distributor, which runs just fine and greatly simplifies the task.
One of my questions is about cases in general. Is the case for a 1600 the same as an 1835 or even 21**? Just different pistons and jugs? Or are cases different aside from clearenced for larger pistons?

I'm not putting any faith in the motor running at the moment. Breaking loose would be nice though. Like I said, I'm looking forward to tearing into it and then breaking out the measuring sticks.

If you aren't sure how old the bearings are and you did not check the play when everything was together, you may want to consider replacing all the bearings since everything's already apart. Last time I did this, the good quality ones were getting pricey and hard to find, so shop around. You will also want to replace all the spacers with specially hardened ones. They fit right in and withstand the stresses from those oversized rear tires and offset wheels a lot better than the stock ones.

Other than physical appearances of outside, the no telling what you are dealing with.... If you can free up motor (rusted rings to cylinder-maybe) then you may be able to get it to start or maybe not.... IF it will start and run fairly clean (no rods knocking or what ever), you might have gotten lucky...

Only real way to diagnose what may be wrong internally is to crack the case and inspect everything....

It was great seeing and talking to you at Buellton. Dale is amazing and he is still "playin" a lot more than I do these days. Highlight of our great Buellton weekend was also meeting and talking to Bruce and having him sign the Manx. That is a cool picture of your Safari, hopefully someday we can get the buggies out for a run. Thanks for the compliment on the Pismo pics and in my gallery I posted our pics from the Manx Buellton event.

Good point on getting the facts. When I bid on this it was said that it did not run and had stopped turning over. The battery was dead so I have never tried turning it over with the Key/ignition system. I have only tried rotating the crank clockwise with a wrench at which point I was only able to tighten the bolt a little. To be exact, the big bolt on the crank, not the gen. I have so far attempted to rock the car while in gear to no avail. At that point I pulled the plugs and added mystery oil to the cylinders. Tomorrow I will say a prayer and try the crank bolt again.

The PO said he paid a local mechanic $3700 to "fix" (I'm guessing rebuild) the motor somewhere in WY. He was supposed to end up with a 1835 bored out to a 1904 and the case is supposed to be stamped with GEX on the pass side case. He drove it for a week and then parked it for a month or two and it never ran again. He went to find the mechanic who he said had skipped town by then and he has no paperwork proving anything. His words were something to the effect of "for all I know he changed the spark plugs"

I won it on eBay and had it shipped to SC where it lives now. I knew it wasn't running at all when purchased so it was no surprise. I figured a rebuild would be needed. The biggest problem is finding out what I'm working with in the first place. Any help with that will be appreciated.

As always, I'm open to suggestions.

Dino Sr. passed away. His son Dino Jr. is still running the company, but in between his regular job. He is the only source for the nice buggy windshields. He will return your call. It took him about 3 to 4 days to return my call on the last WS I bought 2 months ago, but it is worth the wait.

After the order was placed, I had the fresh WS in about 1 week, maybe a day or two less.

OK - lets back up a sec - Motor wont turn over means what? You turn that key and nothing happens or it cranks and doesnt start? Big difference, If it doesnt crank. - first make sure that your have power to the starter. Now - look at the starter a little closer. I am assuming that you have a good battery and the cables are connected.

You will see a big heavy wire held on with a nut and a small wire that is a slip on connection. Make sure the car if not in gear and you should block the wheels. Take a screwdriver and jump across the big and small terminals. If it cranks, then you have an issue with the wiring or ignition switch.

Post where you are with things and then we can go from there. Be clear in your descriptions.

All, I thought I'd do myself a favor, get some exercise and upgrade the brakes at the same time. Pulled all the wheels and moved the large wheel cylinders to the rear, and the smalls to the front. Adjusted the brakes while there too. All went well until I went to reinstall the r/f drum. Tight going on. Come to think of it , it was tight coming off too , but it did spin easily. Put it on and off several times, it appears to be an issue with the front wheel bearing seal and the spindle lip that it rides on.
Anyway, I put it on and got the wife to pump brakes so I could bleed them. Took it around block after and the brakes are horrible. Mushy , low pedal, grabs left when stopping. I am thinking i need to go back out tomorrow and re-adjust, re-bleed . Still don't have a clue why r/f is hard to put on and off. I did jack up the front end and r/f tire does not want to spin freely. It only moves as far as my foot forces it to. Not good. More investigation needed there.
My question. What is the proper way to bleed the front wheel cylinders? They mount with the bleeder in the middle of the 'reservoir' and that leaves the upper end un-bleedable. I did gravity bleed them pretty well before bolting them up tightly. i held them level, line tight, took cap off master cylinder and opened the bleeder. It appeared to get all the air out.

Any thoughts? Has anyone else encountered the 'tight' wheel seal issue I've got? Anyone else encounter the bleed issues when reversing their wheel cylinders?
Thanks for the help guys! Bob

Subject: Heartland SR badges on ebay
I have to say that this one is a bit odd. I had a Heartland SR hood and the badge on it was not ABS...it was diecast metal.
I recently found these on e*** and the description for the auction states that the seller found 5 ABS badges in the Heartland SR he bought and he is selling those badges.

I looked at the image and it appears to me as though these were molded in a silicone mold and are cast out of black resin. If these were injection molded, there would not be the number of voids and dings in the edges surrounding the badge itself. The void areas would have been raised up in the mold...which would be highly irregular if Heartland was producing these.

I am in NO way stating that the seller is trying to pull a fast one on anyone. I just know that the badge on my Heartland hood was something different than what these are. Just do more research if you decide to put one of these on your Heartland SR

If you have shortened the brake pedal pushrod you need to make sure you still have functional duel circuit brakes. You should have somebody open the bleeder valve on a front wheel cylinder (or rear if you have larger bore wheel cylinder on back) while you push down on the brakes. You need to make sure the pedal comes up hard a safe distance before hitting the firewall when a bleeder valve is opened (simulating a 1/2 brake failure.) If the pedal hits the firewall the safety advantage of a duel circuit braking system is forfeited.

With the top on, it's very comfortable. You get the sensation that the humidity vanishes.

The other advantage is that, as you know, we drive long distances. With the back part of the sear warmers, it acts as a muscle relaxer and I don't have back pains even after 2+ hours of driving stints.

Art,
You sound motivated to getting your buggy ready for the trip.
Have you seen the map of per posed route? It is on the Manx club forum.
Almost 6,000 miles of driving there and back. Some are transporting buggy back to California after trip there. Others are having buggies transported both way.
Taking the time to drive both ways and attending Manx on the Banx event will be about 2 1/2 weeks of being away from work and home for most that plan on driving both ways.
There is always the weather to contend with. It not always going to be flip flops, short pants, and Hawaiian shirts days.
Most weather moves from west to east, If it rains it could last for days as it follows us.
If you have traveled before across the country on a motorcycle you have a better insight on what to expect.
Reading about Vincent & France's adventures of traveling to 49 states and Canada can give you and idea the fun they had on the trips.
If you can get your buggy up and running by the first part of July, there is the Manx Club run at Big Bear. Vincent & France are driving from Quebec to attend this year in their Kick Out SS.
Last year there was about 140 buggies in attendance. Even if you don't have a buggy ready, you can still come and see all the buggies Saturday morning before the runs. You might even find a empty seat to go on a ride on one of the runs.
Seriously tho if you are not into welding it, You can use aluminum tape (not duct tape) Hvac tape.. molds well around corners.. just run several layers..
I did this to several pin holes on my pan ( after por15 ) then sprayed with self etching primer then rubberized under coat.. worked very well.. cheap and easy..
Or you can use fiberglass cloth and por 15 to saturate cloth.. dries rock hard.

Although metal work is best.. do not use foam filler or good stuff or anything like that..
Yeah, my project lives on HF dollys too. The have the same load capacity as the job specific car dollys & are way cheaper. I bought a few more of them for other stuff. I've got an antique stove on one & my work bench chair is rolling around on one.
I don't want the body to warp & had bought 2x4's for support pieces under the body. I plan on hanging mine like you did with the 2x4's under it for support except my ceilings aren't as high as yours so the hoist would make it hang too low. I will just put the hooks directly above where the boards stick out.

And with each application of pedal pressure it makes situation worse....
Thanks for explaining that. I was having a similar problem as the OP and fixed it by adjusting the pushrod. I thought it was related to heat build up in the fluid, but what you explained makes perfect sense.
After reading all the reviews, even if the mystery oil works I'm going to pull the motor and do a complete rebuild anyway just to see/know what I have and whats going on. If those are not case numbers, when I find them should be 123A and 123B or 123 and 124? Just trying to find a path to follow. Thanks again for all the help.

My end game is to have something reliable which on occasion will pull up the front end.

If you're really worried about the rafter supporting the weight (although I don't think you should) you could always go up in the attic and nail in a couple of 2x4s accross the rafters and put your lift points into them. That way all the rafters support a bit of the weight instead of only a couple. That said, I've hung my body from the ceiling without a problem just using tiedown straps looped under 2x4s and the body sitting on them, from a couple of rafters.

If it is going to hang for a while and the garage is hot, I would reccomend resting the body on a couple of 2x4s and have the cables suspend the wood insted of directly on the body so the body doesn't twist or warp.

Pick up four of these ar HF. Find them on sale for $8. My project lives on one set, I can move it, spin it, roll it under the hoist I got there too.

http://www.harborfreight.com/1-ton-chain-hoist-996.html

I Hoist my body on and off my chassis, install the engine, lift the chassis on and off the mover dollies. All one man operations.

I have a 12 foot ceiling in my garage and I store the body above the work being done from a pair of cheap block and tackle rigs.

Not a commercial for HF but all done for about $80 and I don't need to wait for help, I can move at my own pace.....

Awesome! I picked up four 4-1/2" hooks that are basically the same thing. I started to get eye bolts, but I figured if I have a few people to help me lift it, I could just tie a bowline knot at each corner then while it's being lifted it would only take a few seconds for a fourth person to put the loop over the hook.
Seeing that pic is very reassuring.

I picked up my Oval body off the pan with 4 - 1/2 inch eye bolts screwed into the 2 X 4's over head in my garage. I also picked up a long bed off of my Chevy truck years ago so I could paint behind the cab.

I know both of those weigh more than any buggy body I have owned.

There are two push rod lengths. They are factory set (even though its very easy to loosen the lock nut and change it). Leave the pushrod length alone unless you know its wrong and adjust the freeplay according to the book with the pedal stop.

The body is thin, thinner than my late production Manx II, but very even thickness and has survived very well.

Hey guys,
We just got back from the Kit Car Nationals in Carlisle Pa this afternoon and I'm still in the throes of an out-of-body experience so forgive any typos or other faux pax. Needless to say, we had a fantastic time. To paraphrase Peter Egan, we had one of those weekends of which everyone gets just six or so in their lifetime. You don't know when or what they will be, they just happen and you find yourself seeing them in full light only in retrospect. I think this was one of ours. We met and talked to lots of folks, met friends we'd only talked to on the net, saw so many cool cars it was too much to take in and overall, just had a great time. Neil's poor, overworked truck was the unsung star of the week as she dutifully carried we and cargo the 2400 miles without so much as a hiccup all the way there and back again. We switched off driving every three hours (tank of gas) or so and she just rocked on. A veritable "Hobbits Holiday". We plan to be very good to her.
We "represented" for the often overlooked and oft abused Laser 917 crowd and stole the thunder from under many a fine car. I suspect we left many disappointed and confused folk in our wake! That should raise the respect bar for us Laser owners and give some people pause to be a bit more interested in the back-water kit car guys!

For me, one of the high points of the weekend was meeting all of the guys that we've interacted with on the web. In addition to meeting Jon, Tom (again) Rod and his son Jesse and many others, I finally got to meet Doc and his wife in person at last! Doc is a member of our Laser917 forum on POHT. Hey Doc!!!!! Good to see another member in person at last! We had a fine time and the time we had went way too fast. Could have talked for days, but (sigh) it was not to be on this trip. Nevertheless, it was a couple of hours I'll treasure. Thanks for coming all that way you guys! One of the first orders of business for me was to take hat in hand and get forgiveness for not recognizing Doc's trip to Zuffenhausen to put footsteps ahead of mine at the Porsche museum. Thanks Doc. Good to meet in person at last....

<img src='http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w290/quizzats/carlisle01_zps7a207cd7.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w290/quizzats/carlisle01_zps7a207cd7.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.
Doc and his wife with yours truly hanging and talking. Notice the two of us have great taste in pants.... Must be our military backgrounds.....

The whole story would take too long to tell (and some of it "won't" be told in mixed company) so here's a few highlights.
The photo below is what Neil and I saw as we pulled into the campground on thursday afternoon. I suppose you can but imagine that I was feeling a bit downtrodden when we pulled into our site next to both a Ferrari P4 and Porsche 917 replica! Had I been driving, I'd have just pulled back out and headed home. As it turns out, the owner of these two magnificent replicas was there to hawk his wares, not enter them in the show. The ONLY reason we dodged that particular bullet. Neil and I had a great time talking to the owner and his wife. One or more of the two of us (I won't mention which one) spent some time drinking Mai Tai's with Ron and his wife while watching The Allman Brothers band on DVD. The bathroom was much further away later that night for some reason..... Ron was a great guy and has recently become the American distributor for Bailey Replicas from South Africa; the maker of these fine examples of excellence. Neil and I sat in our lawn chairs saturday night while Ron and his wife went downtown in the P4. She was driving, the tiny dog was in her lap. Ron was in the shotgun seat waving at us as they went by. For some reason I'll never understand, it seemed completely normal to see a Ferrari P4 idle by on all 12 cylinders with Ron's wife at the helm and the dog planted on her lap. Life is weird sometimes....
<img src='http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w290/quizzats/carlisle03_zpsfc57bea3.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w290/quizzats/carlisle03_zpsfc57bea3.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.

Here's our camp for the three day show of shows. The weather treated us to fine days and nights, raining only as we packed up to leave on sunday.... That's Neil's Uber-sanitary Bugatti replica we stuffed in the trailer on top of the Laser. He's made a punk of many-a would-be trophy winner at various regional shows with that one. He drives it around pretty often.

The working end of the P4. Yes...it's a real Ferrari mill under that. As Ron said though: "It's ONLY the little Ferrari motor. Scarcely enough ponies to push this bucket past a couple hundred or so.... The 917 clone was sporting a tiny 3.2 liter carbed Porsche mill running through a 915 tranny. Rather mundane. I'd give some serious body parts just for a chance to SIT in it....

Other various chaff sitting around. Neil counted more than 40 or so speedster replicas.

Here's your humble (hung-over) reporter with trophy in hand. No one....and I mean no one.... was more surprised than I to find the note on the windshield. Neil and I spent the day of judging drooling over a field of cars that offered more than we could possibly take in. Lots of veterans of this show said attendance was way down. I'm personally glad. There's no way I saw anywhere close to all of what was there. The Sterling mob alone had more than 10 cars there.
Here's how we got 10 pounds of sugar in our 5 pound bag. The trailer isn't long enough to fit both cars so we stacked them.... It worked fantastic and we had nary a problem with any of the logistics.
Last but not least, here's the bomb they dropped on us. The judging is by a committee there. They spend the day friday looking at all of the cars that are registered. There are no classes. It's all one lump. From all the field, they choose 10 cars they think are the best and each of those gets one of these. There's no "Number one". Just the 10 best of the entire field. Neil and I got back from our thousand mile walk looking at all the jewelry and found a note on the windshield notifying us of the judges decision to include our car in that number. We're happy and shocked. It'll take some time to process the weekend.

So there you go guys. Thanks again to everyone we were able to talk to and especially to Doc and his wife for joining us. That was great. Special thanks to Neil for the weekend and being an inseparable part of the build. Now...on to another project. We're working on that one.....
