Being the most of system is new, I'd really hammer it to the pedal to ensure all bleeders and any questionable lines are flowing clear. It sounds like it can only be air. I HAVE had this happen on two occasions, and as was suggested, keep bleeding em. By really smashing the pedal through, I believe it tends to explode the trapped bubbles out of the system. One last thing. I have had one MC that was supposedly new, that just plain didn't work. I got it from a friend who claimed this. I knew it must be operator error, but I'll be damn if I couldn't get the cuss to work. I gave up. Swapped back to a used one I had and bammo! Instant brakes. For the record, I almost always rebuild all brake cylinders and MCs with great success. Hope you saved your old pieces, they're the real McCoy.

i could go on. the point is that the drums/backing plates etc aren't "hard to find". these are just the ones listed on the interwebs anyway. i always just turn the drums and move on. i have yet to find any that are "out of spec", only out of round

Check you're Bentley manual for the drum specs. I believe it is 9.90" for the 1-ton drums, but I would recommend looking it up, it might be 9.91".

I find that the majority of the 1-ton bus drums I see are out of spec.

Good used 1-ton front drums are hard to find, and when I needed a set of new front drums for a customer three months ago I called everywhere and there were none to be had.

The flaps should hang down when open, not roll up.
The vertical legs of the velcro are supposed to extend downward past the fold, to give the flaps something to hook to so they will be out of the way when open.

The spring is identical on both ends this photo shows the one end popping off after I put the door in the closed position. When it is in the open position it stays on fine.

I would prefer not to buy the whole beam, but that definately seems like the quickest and most affordable way to get it all at once. If I am measuring drums, what is the minimum thickness to have them turned and still be usable. I do have some drums that I have been using for rollers, I just figured that they were out of spec.

Copper tubing is not safe. Brass would be safer. The steel is what came on them and it's thicker walled, plated or coated.

that setup is more realistic because it comes with new cylinders, but i still think for $300 you can buy a complete used front end

Thank you for the input. What is the acceptable spec on turning bus drums? I could buy drums and do the work on them, but I would prefer to just buy them new. I really need everthing, drums, backing plates and all the guts for my new front end so this also looks pretty good.

I'm still thinking about buying that 63 panel,But the guy seems like an arse on the phone,I also found that panel that was in the woods in Quebec,not much left,I got the mplate,dove blue block off,and the gas door,The roof was crushed,rear hatch and side doors were so so,and front bumper was also good,just didnt have the right tools for the job

Here are some pics after washing, compounding. If you look in the begining of the thread you can see the before and after pics. I thought that was the wrong speedometer. My other 55 is at Josh Hibblers getting finished up. When I get it back I will be able to compare the two.

Yes I do love the deluxes but i do also have a 54 panel which I find myself liking more. Lets face it we love them all.

They appear to be advertised correctly. Price seems fine to be for brand new drums. Good used in spec 1-ton front drums are HTF and I think many suppliers are sold out of the new ones.

If you want 20 amps inside make sure the wire you run from outer to inner box is at least 12 gage 3 wire.

Hey guys, I just brought my '66 Westy home. As I stumbled across this thread I figured I'd share some pics of my canvas. Evidently this has been replaced in the past, the material is striped with flaps that hang down covering the sreen up. What do you make of this? It looks as though it's at least 25 yrs. old...

Wrong speedometer. Looks like a bug speedo from the pics. Probably the same bug the radio faceplate came from. It should also be a clear needle, without the chome ring between the center of the face and the numbered area.

Ok, I hacked off my 10 gallon split neck and headed off to napa. The outer diameter of the neck measures 2 and 5/16ths. The biggest napa said they carry is 2 and 1/4, and there is no way that that hose is fitting over that neck. What size of hose are you guys running? Any other places to get it besides napa? What is the technical name of this fuel safe hose?

sure...if you want to go through the gear box and reduction boxes to reseal the side covers ...it is the proper way...i will agree.but if you just want to reseal the leaky covers the paper gasket gets cut of course at the top and installed...the fluid in the box will not leak out of the cut it is way below the fluid line where the cut would end up...just the way i would do it and nothing more than a opinion...

You probably know this, but if you decide not to replace the brake cylinders, at the very least ensure that the pistons are moving. It is not uncommon for them to seize yet not leak.

your mexican heads could be the problem. i had a set on a 1641 w/ mild cam and dual carbs and it was a gutless turd. turns out that the mexi heads were cut so deep it lowered the compression. i installed a good set of rebuilt german heads and that engine performed like it should then.

you don't need to buy a kit. just use another brake fluid bottle slightly full of brake fluid. snake your plastic tube from the bleeder nipple down under the level of fluid in the bottle. then bleed away. this keeps air from getting sucked back in the line since the tube is submerged in fluid. got it?

Have you actually looked at the bores? They might just need a quick hone, wipedown and reinstall. On the fronts, often the bottom bores will be wasted but the tops are ok. Water in the system settles in the bottom cylinder. The back ones are often totally ok. You will know they are bad if they are leaking.

I have never heard of cutting paper gaskets in order to fit them behind the side plate.
Three or four gaskets are used so, if there is too much play, you can remove the plate and rip out a gasket, then check the play, without having to remove the whole axle tube and RGB to add a gasket. To remove the axle tube, you have to split the RGB cases, remove the small snap ring, then bearing, remove the side plate, and pull the sucker off. The axle can be left in the side gear but I would recommend removing the large snap ring so you can pull out the axle and check the condition of its end, the side gear, and the fulcrum plates.

I followed this bus from the oval thread where the seller was asking questions about 4 ovals that he had found along with this bus. I pm'd the owner and we talked about the bus. This is when it had already been put on ebay. He listed the vin in the ebay ad and I knew it was a 55 so I struck a deal with the owner. The bus hasn't been on the road since '74 and was outside with corrigated roofing on top and a bed built in the back which saved the cargo floor and in turn kept the bellypans solid as well. Today i washed the bus and compounded some of the drivers side and the dash around the speedo. I will post pictures later. As far as metal work that this bus needs doglegs, front floor, and the rear wheel wells. I will make a list of the differences from Aug to Sept. that I can see on my 2 '55's. One I noticed today was my Aug 55 has a clear needle speedometer and the Sept does not.

I seem to have misplaced the pin that is at the bottom of the shifter. I found one that belonged to a beetle and put it in. It shifts fine for a couple of shifts, then pops out of place and I cant find any gears. My question: Is the pin the problem or is it something else? Is the pin the same for a bus (67) as a bug (unknown year).

Yes the WW kits are nice. I don't have the wrapper handy, but they are resold through WW and have an orange circular logo. The outside of the lines are green, have a plastic-y feel (the Teflon coating), and they bend by hand easy enough to not need tools to do the job.

If you are up for taking risks and have the free time to fab the lines, go for it, but I'd buy the kit and spend my time ensuring they are properly installed.

^Yeah and yep, what those guys said... plus the kits are cheaper then buying assorted lengths of line from the auto parts store if replacing all the hard lines.
In other words, just buy the kit, and new rubber grommets for the frame.

The line kits that Wolfsburg West sells are Teflon coated to prevent corrosion damage.
I think a full set of lines cost about $50.00 plus shipping and they are already made to the correct lengths you need.

Here are some of my new lines compared to some original lines.

after a discussion on the performance forum i hvae an interesting choice for
my next engine. 1915 or 1776 or 1745 or 1791. 90.5x69, 76x88.5, 78x85.5.

they all will cost around $1100. the 1700s will probably work best with my sp
heads and dual ICTs though.

all will probably be around 80-90hp, its just a question of which is more
reliable and has the most torque between 1000-5000 rpm.

if i dont stroke it i'll use the stoke crank.

everything balanced, full flow, 1.25 rockers, hd shafts, eagle 100 cam, scat
lube a lobe lifters, my heads have had some work done to them. single hd
springs also.

my wife wants me to use the type4 1.7l i got for $10 though. thanks atleast
1500 to build as a 2l if i use the ICTs.

to build a 2007 with the cip1 kit and my heads and carbs is around 1500.

but the ICTs are limiting me, which may be a good thing. i think i will have to
stay under 1800 in engine size or step up to weber IDFs and dual port
manifolds.

My comment to the OP.

Here's how I think those heaters work. The fuel pump pressurizes the system. Yours seems to work. It's the solenoid on the heater itself that lets that fuel in to the combustion chamber. Have you checked yours? It may be that solenoid that isn't shutting off fully that lets fuel drip in to that hot combustion chamber that is causing the smoke you see. Maybe something to look at??????

Another thought would be to check the ignition side of your system. Have you checked your point gap? Also the gap between the electrode and the ground in the combustion chamber???

I never even noticed that my extra 67 westy didnt have the electrical outlet at all! Its a smooth top with no destination codes at all but US specs with two popouts and a steering lock. It also doesnt have the child's cot brackets. After looking at other euro westies it seems to be a pretty common configuration.

I'm trying to wire a 6 volt SW heater to work in my 12 volt truck. Can anyone tell me if this looks correct? I intend to wire the motors in series so that they're only getting 6 volts.

I was going to try to hide the joint of the large gray plastic trim piece behind the hold-down bracket clip. I don't know where the factory put the joint. Do you? I see you have yours on the side.
Is there any reason not to do it the way I was planning to?

Very true. If you think PNW rust is bad then you have never experienced true North East rust.
I looked a single cab in a field the other day and there was nothing left of the underside.
Only frame rails and those were full of holes too!
