Thanks for the info. I've looked through the "Archives" before, but didn't make note there are different types of slats. I thought they were all mounted on top of the ribs, not in the valleys.

I got it working! It took several iterations to actually get the contacts properly adjusted, but it is now again making sounds! Only thing now I need to trace the wiring and clean contacts as the sound takes a little while to actually build into a horn sound. When hooked straight to a battery it is much more responsive. Thanks for the advice and information.

Calder stuck with me the whole day, he just loves to work on buses. He did all the hard to reach screws and is really quite adept with tools. He even carefully removed the house paint off the head of each screw before installing a panel or cupboard. He is seven and says if he could have only one bus it would be a red pressed bumper westfalia. I like his style

With the help of my awesome family I was able to get the interior re-installed and camp in it this weekend. All 3 boys and my wife helped to gently put the fragile 55 year old camper interior back together.

I sanded off two layers house paint to get to the original wood and then put 3 coats of finish on the wood, the first coloured 'classic oak' and the last two clear. This was to match the original patina on the rear cabinets which did not get refinished. Overall I am happy with how it turned out and I managed to use all the original wood except for the subhatch, which is baltic birch. I may try to glue limba veneer to it at a later date.

This stuff takes up a lot of space when not in a bus.

The floor had some vinyl glued to it which was a huge job to remove. I ended up heating up (gulp) with a heat gun and melting it off, praying that I didn't light the dry-as-a-match og limba at the same time. It ended up coming out okay.

After all the refinishing the first step was to put the long panel back in, Liam helped.

Then the bulkhead panel. I have two and was trying to figure out how to switch the side piece for the one that has the original CampingBox sticker in good condition. Everything was so fragile I chickened out.

decided to cut the floor out as its pretty buggered.

after reading firula's build thread i decided to have a go at making my own floor pan.
unfortunately i couldn't use my current floor as a template for the ridges because most of the top had a new panel welded over it and the other half was missing anyway. So i printed a copy of the plan firula has in hie thread and went with a 'best guess' policy. ive left the outer big enough to give me a bit of give / take if i need it. I guess we'll find out a bit later in the build if it worked or not - its very possible you might see a green floor pan in the garage in a few weeks haha.

hmmm not much other than endless paint stripping..damn its going to take forever but it will be worth it...but what really happened was my speedo randomly started working. ive had it all hooked up but it wasnt working and i havent found the time to check it, well today it randomly started working. oh well!

yesterday filled the trans,adjusted the clutch, adjusted the brakes, fixed and adjusted the ebrake, removed and fixed/lubed the shift rod. its funny how the little things really add up to make a more pleasant experience. Also removed and flattened/dried the marble mat and replaced the sub-hatch seals.

Hey guys and girls.
Ive been a lurker here for quite a while and think ive read just about every build thread on here.
I picked myself up a 65 a couple a weeks ago so thought id start a build thread.
Ill apologise now for the long gaps between updates - due to other commitments (house to do up, land to look after and motorbikes to ride) my budget isnt huge.
The wagon needs a lot of work and i pretty much intend to do most of it myself so any pointers would be great.

if i can figure out how to post photos ill put some up! Do i have to upload them to the 'gallery' and link to them??

Mine kept cranking one day 3 months after installing a new starter. Turned out to be a bad Solenoid.
If it keeps cranking with the key off then it is likely the starter solenoid contactor is welding itself on. The Ignition switch would have to be doing something very strange for it to be the problem. On mine the solenoid wire from the ignition switch at the starter end is on a spade lug. If yours is, then next time it happens. While it's still cranking put her in neutral and lock the parking breaks and climb underneath and pull the little wire off of the solenoid. If it is the Ignition switch it will quit, If it is the starter solenoid it won't. My Solution.

I believe its the ignition switch turn to on position the starter spins. Not every time but I'm pretty sure thats the issue. Need to check if I burned up the starter. I also think the mechanical fuel pump went out. It whistles when. I move the crankshaft pull

It has a few issues to work on to get running, but is not as bad as some. Motor turns free, but will do leak down check this week. Master cylinder is stuck. Shifter flops around everywhere. Will be placing some orders this week to get me started. Just gonna get it running and drive it while addressing rust repairs.

The wife and kids got busy cleaning the bed up today.

Found some holes that were filled with nails and bondo in the bed in four places front to back in nice rows. Must of had something mounted over the bed at one time.

Does anyone know if the bastard cylinders at the case were also a different size than 40hp?

I read in here that the heads and cylinders are different in size than 40 and 36hp. What about the case ends though? I have 40hp heads and cylinders Id like to swap on though. The bastard engine I would like to do this to has a replacement case with no number stamped on it.

Also it has 3rd generation heads, are they good?

just trying to determine whats interchangeable so I can out the most reliable engine together, dont care about making a 100% correct bastard.

the guage needs power, and ground(body of guage case ground), thats what makes it ready to process the sending unit wire signal. With those 2 hooked up, it still wont register at all, unless the sending unit terminal is directly grounded or grounded through a resistor of 90 or less ohms. For instance, use a 50 ohm resistor and the guage will register somewhere near 1/2. Ground it with a 25 ohm resistor will make the guage register higher maybe 3/4 tank. Lower the sending unit resistance, the higher the guage will read. The guage power/ground can be grounded anywhere on the guage, just make sure the metal on the guage is clean, not rusted, and shiney. Dull or corroded metal makes a very poor ground. The mounting posts is where the guage normally gets its ground when installed but the whole body of the guage can be used for testing purposes.

Been reading some about that. Seems they'll work, but get "pegged" over very hard on start up and break the needles often because of that.

I have heard that, but never had that problem.
Been running a 6V fuel guage in my 66 kombi, and put over 30K miles on it in the last 3 years. Works fine

-Loosened the paint around the hand brake, got it working, and installed a shiny new button and boot.

-Got the safaris back from Wolfgang and got them mostly installed.

-There are still plenty of adjustments and touch-ups, as well as a couple more panels, the table, the spice rack, the over-head cabinet in the back, and any upholstery rear of the jump seat... But as soon as the sun comes back out, I'm calling her road-worthy!

I decided to not leave any loose ends and wrap this thread up for others coming here in search for answers (it can be confusing to collect bits and pieces from other threads):

The initial set-up:
1959 Bus with a big-nut tranny (drum to drum) conversion

I got a late cable:
EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLE, 1964-1967 Bus, 3465mm/136.4 inches

that would fit the big nut drum and had it cut to 123.5" here:

They were cooperative (getting the cable shipped from my vendor, shorten it with a new metric size adjusting thread, and then ship it to me).

It seemed a little short in the beginning when I started the instal, but turned out to be perfectly sized (I am anticipating stretch of the cable over time).

... what a relief now - much more relaxed parking and a little safer driving!

realistically, all you would need is a high ohm resistor from radio shack and that would solve the issue of 6v guage on 12v. Just go get their variety pack, try the higher ohm ones till you find the sweet one. Install that resistor in the supply line and done.
Yes I can see if your looking for a 67 only 12v guage...your gonna be waiting a whhiilleeeee. Guessing it wont be as cheap in price either. Id rather pay 50 or less bucks for one that will work or 100 bones for a nos 67 one.

A lot of people Never switch out the fuel guage when converting to 12v. I just made the voltage drop regulator just because I could. I ran my fuel guage on 12 for 15 years with no issues.

I've got 12v going to the gauge. I grounded the other post and the needle did nothing. From what I've read so far, that is a bad gauge. No?

I would use a sending unit to check if it works properly, one with a float arm.

Well what looks like ATR inside the horn should be the screw, but the head is outside the horn.

More than likely it will have a phillips head.

Havnt tried to fix a fuel guage. mine hasnt broke yet. Ive heard of one guy that does repair them. Dont remember the name. If you just want a fuel guage and arent a stock nazi, any split bus fuel guage will work.

Actually my horn is a 12V and it did have machine screws and square nuts on the underside. They looked very old and as if they belonged there.
The adjusting screw is the question. Is this the part which looks like a piece of all-thread? The outside of the horn has a lot of either undercoating or some other very sticky nasty stuff at the point where this screw protrudes to the outside.
Is the end of that screw hex head or a normal slotted screw head? Trying to anticipated what I might have to look for on that side.

The blue one's are made to open. The black ones you have to get rid of the flare on the grommet that the mounting screw goes through then the cover comes off. The all aluminum ones are even trickier but all of them you can hack into.

If the problem were in your switch, the starter would spin anytime the battery was hooked up and the key switch was in the "on" position. If it doesn't start to spin until you turn the key to "start", the issue is in the solenoid. Replace the starter and all will be well; there is probably damage to it from over-heating that will give you grief later if you manage to replace just the solenoid.

I had the same problem on a British sports car, bad starter bc if I hit the starter with a wrench it worked. Swapped the starter out and on my way. Last week my US car did it till the starter burned out, swapped the starter out and done.

We are in Dubai, we should receive the car today or tomorrow then take a ferry to Iran but the cargo wasn't planned to arrive now (as our agent in India told us), it was planned for wednesday and will not arrive before Thursday. Our visa to Iran will expire on Friday.

Think you mean you drilled out the rivets.

1. Yes, sandpaper. Yes, undo the screw. Easier to carefully take apart, but make sure you put it all back together the same!

2. For adjusting just set the points apart. Apply dielectric grease to the points to help keep corrosion away for as long as possible. Close up the horn. Attach quickly the power source you have for electricity. Take off the power source and turn screw 1/2 turn in direction to get points to close up. Repeat till horn works and fine tune as needed.

Good to add a tiny bit of RTV sealant to the horn paper seal, and a little paint over the adjusting screw edge to keep out water from getting in and causing corrosion..

There is no published 'checklist' of parts that I've ever seen. There is the official 'parts list' at http://www.oacdp.com/5867part.html but it isn't just a list of parts for one specific year/model, so you'd really have to know what you were looking at to make a checklist out of it.

The only way I know to make sure you have everything to make it a driver is to build it and make it drive. As stated earlier, your best learning tool is this forum...just read every thread you can, digest the pictures and start looking at your bus as it relates to what you see here. I had quite a few years owning, working on, and parting out buses before I found the Samba (VW Planet!), and I still learned a ton of new stuff from reading. And still learn new stuff all the time.

As to your engine rebuild question...impossible to say what the price covers, as you'd have to get that info from the builder. I don't think you can get 1500 pistons and cylinders anymore, so upping it to 1600 is a good way to go. (That's what I did.) If it needs a major rebuild, you can shelve it and often find a cheap running motor that will get the build going while you sort out the original.

There are LOADS of people who offer engine rebuild services, and many of them are great. Some of them suck. Try to get involved with local clubs, find some Samba members close to you, etc., to help you weed out who is a good rebuilder.

Get your bus home, take pics, post them in this thread and you'll likely get lots of help. Local bus people (or at least a/c VW people) are an invaluable resource when finding parts and services.

Two questions:
I have a 69 beetle convertible. The horn is not responding. I had to drill out the screws but I was able to get it opened up and have the same interior as the above pictures.
These probably are rather dumb questions but I ask them anyway.

1. How do I clean the contacts? I assume with sand paper. Do I have to take the screw out that connects the cable to the points ? That insulator between the points seems to be in the way when cleaning. Any special sand paper? Do the points come out completely?

2. How do I adjust the horn?

My Safaris leak and instead of searching for the holy grail of seals I was wondering if anyone has any good temporary solutions.

I was thinking of getting some white low tack artists tape so that I could tape up the windows if it was raining to give me some temporary protection.

Does anyone have any similar solutions? I'd prefer a PVC tape, with low tack adhesive. Something like what they use to protect painted surfaces, but I haven't found anything in narrow widths.

Oh, and it needs to be cheap!

My first decision has been made...I will get this baby starting and stopping first. I would love to do paint and body but it is just not in the cards right now. I really want to be on the road this summer...possible? not sure

great comment on the last post, how do I know everything is there, is there some checklist of parts that I could refer to. as soon as I get this thing home, I will spread it all out in the garage and try to photo everything get it posted on here and get it done.

I am going to get my new toy thursday, and can't wait.

as for another question, and decision, I have decided to have the original 1500 single port rebuilt to a 1600. I have two rough quotes of 1200-1500 for that type of work, what else will I need to have a turn key engine, is that price just the engine and then I still need fuel pump, ignition etc...or lastly do you buy a used engine and store this one away, whatever I go with, again don't want to overspend here for now, but will not part with the original engine that was in the bus

seems like there has been alot of bozo's posting busses for sale lately that they have no plans of selling. with phrases like " Make me an offer" and" just testing the waters."When you try to pin them down as to what it would take to buy the bus they pull thier ad and then don't respond to your e-mails. This is just as bad as the loosers out there that make offers on cars that that can't back up. Don't waste my time people. If you don't want to sell something don't post it on thesamba for sale. If you want to know what it's worth get it appraised.
