Adjusted brakes shoes on all 4 wheels. What a difference!
Every time I do this I say to myself: why I haven't done this simple job before... It just took me 30 minutes, including removing rear hubs to clean shoes and inspect seal for leaks...

Do your brakes adjusments today!

This is very true. I use a 1500cc oilbath on my s/p 1994cc Limbach engine with 34pict4. I did allready notice a loss in power in the higher rev's after installing the flap and hose. It runs smoother tho, especially when cold.

Zenith's need a lot air, but also lot of preheat... Removing this flap will cause new problems i'm affraid. Creating new holes in the filter housing will act just the same as removing the flap. I'm also planning a 32zenith on my engine, so i've thouht about this matter. I haven't found a real solution jet.

I have a second oilbath lying around, maybe i will try this modification to see if the difference is big enough to make it work.

A bigger diameter preheat hole+hose might be a gain also?

The fuel shut off...yes, it worked out even better than I expected...even the longer automatic stick starter fit with all this hanging there. The details are pretty simple...

I started with a steel stock tank bung nut...I've found that many are aluminum though. Then I scrounged a steel 1/4" NPT 45-deg male/female fitting from my junk drawer...I cut the male 45-deg member off leaving just a female threaded bung that I TIG welded to the stock tank bung. I'm sure your favorite hardware or farm & tractor store will have steel fittings in the hydraulic isle. I cleaned up a good tank screen sock to fit inside.

I then used a steel 1/4" NPT 90-deg male/male fitting found in my same junk drawer and with some pipe thread sealant I threaded it into the welded bung. I found a 1/4" NPT gas compatible female/female ball valve at ACE Hardware and a little more pipe dope it was on. I drilled an 1/8" hole in the valve arm and used an old bus headliner rod because it's fairly stiff and slightly less than 1/8" diameter...I twisted it around a 15mm deep well socket for a finger hole and put a dog leg in the other end for the ball valve arm.

After getting the valve tightened within 1 final turn under the tank I installed the rod and completed that final turn then tossed the rod on top of the passenger side frame rail just forward of the upper shock mount. I left the valve pointing at about a 45-deg toward the nose cone of the tranny for the best actuating angle of the rod and valve arm. I then used a small "P" clamp normally found holding your hard brake lines to the frame and drilled a mounting hole in the inboard lip of the frame seam which holds the rod in place. I then used a large rubber lined "P" clamp to mount a steel bodied fuel filter to the upper mid section tranny bolt...bent a 1/4" steel brake line from there to up near the fuel pump...a couple 3" lenghts of 1/4" fuel line and it's connected.

I simply reach in the fender well to the cavity between the frame and fender well just forward of the shock mount where I find the looped end of the rod...pull for "off"...push for "on". Of course this will only work on stock height or lifted buses...sorry you lowered guys

In one slight defence, camping interiors are just much more practical than 3 rows of seats

What I did to adjust my passenger front door was loosen all but 1 bolt (tight just past snug to hold door position) up on top, then tapped bottom hinge inward with all bottom hinge bolts not tight. Snug but not tight. I did this because I didnt want to put the hinges in a bind. Also discovered that my top hinge on this door is apparently bent forward. Hence the reason my door was tilted upward.

Tomorrow will the vinyl be put on. Its almost ready now. Wheels are changed to stock wheels painted in dark blue. No hub caps...not yet.

Generator - if you want a correct '56 generator you will need to find one first but you can probably take it to a local electrical place to have it redone or maybe someone else can suggest a known good place to send them out.

People are asking about welding videos. I am really looking forward to making them for you. I have not received from Klassic Fab enough of the parts needed. No floor or bed yet. They say good things come to those with patience. I hear the new stampings are worth the wait. I have done what I can with parts I can get for now.

I am holding the old upper support for the gas tank separation panels up to the good used one I just welded in. Only 50% of the metal was remaining in my old one.

This is the bad section of my old bed structure. Thin sliced Swiss cheese! The top of it crumbled in my hands. This is the backbone of a single cab other than the frame. Two of them support the entire length of the load bed. I was happy to find a good used replacement.

It would have been possible to replace this all the way to the separation panel but I wanted to keep the original angle bracket and those beautiful factory spot welds. It would have been difficult to replicate the factory welds and that part was not rusty. I cut and welded only the rusted out section.

I knew 20 years ago the rusted beam was going to be a problem. The bed had a hole in it that filled the bed structure with water and dirt. Back then I could not imagine how I was going to go about replacing that part. Rotisserie and bed removal were incomprehensible. Look at me now!

The white part is the replacement bed structure beam. I will blast it next blasting session.
It is good to have started putting metal back on. All that cutting metal off was getting to me.

So....this weekend I scored some 6.70-15 BF Goodrich Silvertowns on craigslist for $100 (all 4). In good shape, nice deep tread. Mounted them up at the local llanteria and voila! Was going to do the Grabbers or BFG A/Ts, but I guess we can kick it old school for a bit...

i despise the chrome trim. i will pull all of that off when it gets paint.

There are a couple of quirky things that the previous owner did that I question...

I don't mind doing any other work on my SC... however I want everything on the mechanical side perfect... Starting with a clean slate.

Looks good otherwise though. I sure wish I had the funds to do a project this way. I generally have to rely on myself if I want to get it done the right way. However I must say this mostly applies to putting things together other than the engine and tranny internals.

Phosphorous acid works a bit better by getting into the very cracks between the brass pieces.

Naval Jelly is one of many rust removers that has this acid in it. Plus it does not attack plastics or glass.

X2, unless you can find OG NOS in the squiggly blue box get the German stuff you have rebuilt, even some of the rubber and grease in the NOS stuff is pushing 50 years old so that'll need work too.
I don't know what it's like in PG but there's still a few shops around here that'll rebuild a generator, there's a few Samba members that can rebuild distributors or supply rebuilt units if you don't have a core, carbs and fuel pumps too, nothing works or lasts like the OG stuff.

Best to rebuild the carb if it's an original German one. I don't know if they reproduce 36hp carbs.
6 volt generators are available from specialty VW parts suppliers. Be sure to replace the regulator too.
Fuel pumps and distributors can also be rebuilt.

I have busy lately especially during the last concluded national and local elections whereby I had to work and represent come candidates at the canvassing. So doing my weekend restoration of the split bus has been affected. Although I have sanded the sealing wax red and applied fillers on some tiny and small depressions, hopefully, I will be able to paint the split and apply the SWR paint again. Yes, you are wrong unfortunately. The distance that matters is where the flange of the axle tube mounts, the outer area. The thickness of the plate, like 1/4" steel, will only make it stronger and you might need to use longer bolts to attache the plate to the flange of the axle tube.

Modified axle tubes use non-offest spring plates.

Non-modified axle tubes use offset spring plates.

Standard straight axle is the best recommended way to lower a Bus and you can either a) modify your springplates and tubes b) buy wagenswest plates and modify your tubes c) buy busboys kit includes brand new plates and modified tubes.

Offset springplates allow you to avoid modifying your axle tubes because they kick the plate further into the wheel housing. I personally don't like them because of the lower shock mount relocation "thingy".

Like WideFive said, if he used the axles that are in the picture, and also used the springplates from Wagenwest that are in the picture, then he has the wrong combo. Period.

I phoned them. They pulled one tube from stock and measured it for me. It came up just short of 20".

How about a link to a tutorial of "how to make long axle short castings axle tubes" ?

I'm not sure that there has been a step-by-step write up of the process with photos, but I'll look around.

Essentially what you need to do is lengthen the axle tube with a short end casting to match the width of the bus torsion housing. That amounts to approximately 1 1/8" longer tubes. Easiest to just use original tubes, as they are very common. Probably much cheaper, too. If you have a long axle tranny donor, you can use one of those axle tubes for the section donor to your pair of short tubes.

Here's a general step by step overview. Those that do this more regularly, please chime in for additional steps or advice.

Start by measuring the overall length of the existing short axle tube setup. Write that down.

Drive out the pin that holds the casting to the axle tube.

Press the casting off the tube.

Weld 1 1/8" section of a donor tube to the end of the axle tube to be modded.

Press the end casting back into place, noting that the overall length needs to be 1 1/8" longer than it was when you started.

Drive the pin back into the casting.

Thanks for that. that is kinda what I thought. I just was wondering if the CIP axle tube were long enough that I would be just cutting them to length, rather than adding length. (just cleaner looking and less chance for misalignment).

I think I will just order them and see what transpires from there as I build them to match the other axle tubes length.
I will take pics as I go so in the end we will have a tutorial. (of either what to do or what not to, depending on the end results.)

If you buy those new ones from CIP, measure them and post the total length here for us to reference. Otherwise we have no idea how long they are.

Since I spoke with the guys at CIP1.ca they changed the listing of the item, so it now includes all dimensions of the axle tube. Good guys, well done.

If you go down the VIN/Engine # page you will see that is a 1500cc engine from 9/1964.

It looks like I will have to phone in a favor just to get the tmi kit with a long panel delivered from Cali. Left coasters have it easy when it comes to picking up interior bits!

Today, I fitted the deluxe trim save the rocker spears, my Cunado just sent some reference pics! It's getting closer to paint & for some reason, I'm nervous!

You're right, it was an inflammatory question unfair to most Brits. My question was half joke, but my humor translates poorly (and isn't funny). I'm only curious because that floor pattern seems out of place in alot of otherwise color-matching interiors I see in the UK. OK, I have a motor question. My case has 0695613 stamped on it. The tech section shows 6642050 as the number that started in march '62. I couldn't find any case numbers starting with 0. I did find the section that shows one with the letter "O" stating '63 1500 no cam bearings. Anyone have any ideas?

I just painted both front and rear bumpers with WW L-82 and they look awful. Looks more like pearl white than silver white. I have an old nose emblem that was shot with single stage L-82 about 10 years ago and not even close in color match. I am going to buy the Krylon tomorrow and repaint at least one bumper. I will post pics for comparison.

The Jersey Lookers were done many years ago when it was cool, and buses were cheap. Same with wood bumpers and shoddy rust repairs. These days, for the most part, that shit is merely a token of the past. (thankfully)

At the same time, we continue to see checkerboard floors and camper kits installed into a startling number of UK based buses. Not in the past, but right now.

Don't get me wrong, what a guy does to his bus is his business. I was just surprised to see that the movement has reached the point of a marketer seeing the need for a DIY kit.

If you think of a old muscle car with a "deep dish" wheel on the rear. That is negative offset.

No worries man....yea at the price he got it at, most folks would be dumb NOT to get it. In my eyes being a walk-through it gets a special pass on some issues.

You guys are funny....This thing was bought by my best friend yesterday and drug home last night, yes its rough but not as bad as it looks...will prove to be one badass cruiser when he's done with it. Im going to go check it out in person this week.

Wow!! Not what I had in mind. They are all dodgy.
Was there never a good fitting kit.
And before anyone says 'buy a camper'. I have a camper but was going to get a pickup for a work horse and thought it might be a fun summer project to try and build a cool retro style (maybe aluminium airstream style) demountable caravan for it.
