The green one is the correct one to use if going to SVDA. You'll need to T them together and then to the distributor. But it may be hit or miss if you actually have vacuum enough to use an SVDA. If not, get a hold of John regarding the North American 009 it can be recurved slightly and work great. Forget about the Mallory route... they aren't the same quality wise as they were several years ago.

When it comes to aftermarket carb set ups and ditributors one is limited. Unless you wish to switch over to EFI.

Thanks for the ideas. I can't seem to post pictures but as soon as I get my bus rolling I will take the time to figure it out??? I have taken them so I can. I will update with any thing I've learned (if it works)
I ended up swapping bell housing and drilling a hole in the shift rod to the recommended spot earlier. Seems to shift properly now where as before it was no good. Engine fired up tonight and tommorow night ill hook up the cv joints and test it out. Only can work on nights and weekends but the pressure is on. Plan on driving to bugarama in Sacramento this weekend.

Chris

So far! I didn't do anything but drive it from the garage to the street when I made this thread. Since then, during this afternoon I have driven it around town, and even felt ballsy/foolish/adventureous enough to get it up to 65 mph for a minute or two.

Yesterday, during the final install and test start/idle, I just about lost my mind. It was idling just fine for about two minutes, then I hear this frightening, horrible squeal, like a bearing about to melt. Panicking, I shut it down, but couldn't think about what the heck it could be. So, after concluding that fluid levels were correct, and there would be nothing gained by staring at it, I decided to find the source by restarting it and listening/working around. I also presumed that if there was an imminent failure of something really imprtant, it was probably just about wiped anyway

I found a really nice vacuum leak at the base gasket because 'yours truly' failed to tighten the corner nut...WTF?! I am so glad it wasn't anything else!

I'll have to say that I am extremely happy so far. I am very pleased how fast the response is on the accelerator, both in engine performance and acceleration from a dead stop. The tranny readily shifts when getting up to speed, and after putting on a new-in-box SVDA electronic distributor with my partially rebuilt contoversial Weber DFAV, it seems like my engine performance has greatly improved. I re-jetted the idle jets per Redline's recommendation during the carb overhaul. Gone is the erratic idle, flat spot during acceleration, backfiring and dieseling. When the engine is warmed up, it immediately starts within one or two cranks.

I think one of the output shaft seals on the final drive is already leaking, and I'll keep an eye on it. At least now I know how to address that problem!

I've got a lot of little things to attend to before it's a daily driver, but right now I'm pretty happy with it. My 11 year old son was even more excited by it, and he has helped me quite a bit along the way. Including not being offended by my gruff behavior when things went bad!

So you don't think your key switch isn't working all the time? One way to check that is to see if your inside light dims when you try to crank? If not, then either the ignitions switch is bad or its a relay between there and the starter solenoid or it could be a intermittent wire connection somehere. If it dims then it's bad battery cables or transaxle grounds or something or it could be a bad starter or it could just be the solenoid that is if it dims!

VW sent the bus through 2-3 dips or robot sprays of high build primer followed by a sanding to fill/smooth the spot welds and grinding marks, orange (and a few other light/transparent colors) got a base coat of white before the pigment went on to make them pop but I've never seen filler aside from some lead where the top of the nose panel joins the roof.

After paying a personal visit to the shop that started the "super boot" product, they said that they are out, and the manufacturer is no longer. They don't know how long it will be until they have new ones, but they do have a nice sample on their counter if you'd like to look at one, and you're local to Phoenix, AZ……

With the heat here it's easy to see why a high-quality boot is needed.

What is the consensus on best brand to buy otherwise, if the super boots are out? My EMPI boots are cracking after exactly a year, around 12k miles. No vacuum leaks yet, but I'll be replacing in a few weeks…

Hello again everyone,

I decided I would check my hydraulic lifters today on my 1978 FI, as I have only put about 50 miles on it since I first got it fired up after having been sitting for 10 years. They seemed to be totally fine - I couldn't get a .001 feeler between any of them, so I buttoned everything back up. Upon firing up the vehicle, I'm suddenly getting a very loud clicking - almost a knocking - coming from the valves on the right (piston 1). I didn't adjust the valves at all, and I didn't leave anything inside the valve cover (I checked). Any idea what it might be?

No, I haven't read all 9,432 posts, but I did read many. The beauty and fault of forums that have been around this long - there is so much knowledge and threads, but it can get increasingly complex to wade through - especially someone like me who is not mechanically minded and is unclear the the correct terms to search for.

It's a manual.

The unique part about my problem is that it either starts up quickly and normally or it seems like no power is getting to the starter at all. No sounds, no clicks - just the dash lights coming on.

The battery is fairly new and seems fine. Perhaps a grounding problem that is only effected at certain times for some reason?

Well, I 've got it down to the short block.
Hardly a bit of mouse nest material under the tin, pretty clean, actually.
And it turns over very hard by hands gripping the flywheel.
This thing ALWAYS turned over very slowly. I guess I should have taken it apart right away.
My guess is it got water in the crank case and the crank rusted to the bearings.
It has a hell of a knock. I hope the case is still good, but we'll know soon.
BTW, I was wrong about the engine being out- the clutch disc has a "remanufactured for VW of A" sticker.
But every damned screw and washer and fastener seems to be in its right place. EVERY screw came out okay! I did have to use the cutting torch on ALL the exhaust system bolts. Most of the exhaust parts are too rusty to use, I'll probably use the manifolds and the U-pipes. I've got a cutting torch and just cut a head off every damned bolt holding the together except the joint between the manifold and u pipe.
I'm not quite a pro with a torch but I can cut bolts pretty well without burning the garage down. I get set up so I can just cut everything without shutting it off. Acetylene is so expensive now. Propane is used by metal scrappers, but I spend most of my torch time WELDING. And just gotta have the extra degrees that acetylene gives.
I guess i should take this time to talk about safety when cutting. gloves and green eye shield are the main things. You can't believe how long after cutting a steel piece can still burn your skin.
And the other thing about safety: MIND YOUR SPARKS! Make sure no gasoline or cardboard or clothing for them to hit. Make sure you have a large clean area. And Water AND a fire extinguisher. I start shit on fire all the time with a torch. A spray bottle of water will control it 99% of the time, BUT GET THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER OFF THE WALL, MAKE SURE IT'S NEEDLE IS SHOWING IT'S OKAY, AND HAVE IT WITHIN REACH. A helper is always a good idea. A smart savvy helper is priceless. This is a good time for your dad or your child to spend quality time with you. The cars and my dad are gone, but the good memories are still there .

Any pre trip info ?

This weekend I am going to Bug-O-Rama. Instead of going 299 I am going 101 to highway 20. On my way there I am going to stop and check out some camp sites. Here are my thoughts

Friday: Camp out along 101 (Last minute preparations/meet and greet)
Saturday: Explore the Lost Coast and camp out somewhere on the Lost Coast
Sunday: More checking out the Lost Coast then saying goodbyes

If the best camp spot I find is near the Shelter Cove end then we will go north to south, if the best spot is near the southern end then we will go south to north.

Get those buses ready everyone!

299 is a bummer on your brakes anyway!!! But there are some damn good sasquatch/bigfoot sculptures!

Has anyone done the road yet this season??

Scroll up. Those pics are from this season. We have had almost no rain up here compared to most years. It will be dry and dusty.

AC Mack wrote:

If the trip go's south to north. The Sinkyone State Park would be best for a group camp-out. It's about 10-12 miles in from Hwy 1. Almost impossible to find the entrance from hwy 1 though. It's purposely not marked. The locals tear down any signs that are posted. I forget the mile marker to look for . Something to watch for while your out there coastalaircooled. A good detailed forestry map also works great. Usal rd is almost never on any Ca state oriented maps.

Thats where I was thinking too. I have good maps and will report back what I find.

The guide for the fuel pump rod generally will block off the galley and prevent this from happening. I don't think that leaving the rod in there affected anything one way or the other so long as the stock guide is actually there. If there is some kind of homemade jury rig pushrod guide then who knows.

The plug is a bugger to deal with as the guide is right in front of it. You will need to drill through the guide to get enough depth to tap the hole. If you want to do this with the engine together you are going to have a harder time dealing with filings than when doing the other plugs as there will be more filings and more places they can be left behind in the engine. You might just consider JB Welding the plug back in and doing additional peening to help hold it there.

I have heard of people tapping the inner bore forward of the guide and plugging it off. Don't know the pros and cons of doing so.

This area is NOT a pressure point as the oil is only for lubrication for the
pump pushrod. But, if this plug came out the others are Not far behind
and they ALL need to be repaired.
I have done many case plugs and this plug is the most dangerous one to tap
and plug if you have not done them before.

Tap the passage or reinsert the original plug. Peen it and cover it with sealer as
Busdaddy said.

Page 3 in my gallery pics Shows up-close of this oil passage area.

I recently redid the foam for my westy bed, rear pad and jump seat. I originally bought a thick 5-inch memory foam topper and decided it is just not ideal for this application. I learned (after the fact) that memory foam is temperature sensitive and will get softer in warm weather and harder in cold weather. This may be passable for a top bunk, but since I needed it for the seat bottoms too (you could feel the wood bottom when sitting on the memory foam) I decided to shell out the money for the right foam. As you stated, density and firmness are important when considering foam. I ended up going with the LUX-Regular foam from http://www.foambymail.com/

They have some other options that are even higher quality and you should be able to find something through them that fits your preferences should you choose to buy from them. I am impressed with the lux so far, it has a firm feel and is a good compromise for seat bottoms/bed for firmness. I would say it is slightly firmer than the original foam (although after 40 years who knows what it actually felt like when new!). You can have them cut the foam for you or you may be able to save some money if you buy it as a mattress and then cut it yourself depending on the sizes you need.

I would think that would be the way to go! I read the velocity rings greatly increases air flow, and in Colorado at 7000 feet and above that is needed due to the air being so thin it doesn't cool as well.

Yes there are lots of part places, The Dog house shrouds are the way to go unless you go with something like an after market oil cooler, But you can just put it back together stock too. Kinda Depends on how hot your oil gets. Looks like your out in Colorado where you would likely get her pretty hot climbing passes like Wolf Creak or Monarch. There are really only three things you need plus a oil cooler seal kit and tin screws.
1. Dog House Fan Shroud complete with Flaps and Dog house tin,
2. Dog House Oil Cooler mount base,
3. Dog House Oil Cooler.
Most of us vw guys have the old coolers laying around with the mounts from cases that were bad. The hard thing to find is going to be a good working in nice condition used Dog house Fan Shroud complete with Alternator Tin and with flaps?
Do you have a Thermostat?
Also the 75 models I think come with the velocity rings which help too.
There should be some vw junk yards in Colorado too. I need one of the Dog House Fan Shrouds and some flaps too for the engine I am building!

I was going to make a thread about this, but it runs the possibility (98% chance) of being a stupid question:

Did the factory ever use body filler under the original paint? This bus was originally white/orange, and was poorly repainted blue. I'm doing spot-rust-repair, and in grinding certain places, I'll go through the blue -> OG orange -> OG primer, but in others, I'll go through blue ->orange -> bondo. Others are just blue->hi-fill primer (or very thinly applied bondo).

I think it's more reasonable to assume that it was in an accident at some point during its orange life, wherein they repainted it orange afterwards, but I can't be certain. I know I've heard that lead was used to smooth seams back in the day, but in 1974? I have my doubts.

I'd like to return it to OG paint, but I'd hate to start buffing and sanding and find out that there's nothing original underneath anyway. This determines whether I change it back to white/orange instead of repairing the white/blue that's currently on it.

Aluminium pushrods are fat and aluminium in color, while steel pushrods are skinny, just about the diameter of the ends, and steel gray in color. You don't really need a magnet to figure out which is which. A very few engine with solid lifters will have aftermarket chrome moly pushrods.

Solid and hydraulic lifters just feel different as well when you go to adjust them.

What transmission set-up and tire package are you planning?

I'm aware that tires, gearing, driver, where you live ( hills, flat, etc) all factor in to each persons average MPG. I'm just trying to get each persons average and that's also why I asked for a brief description on what was done to the swap.

For the immediate future I will just couple it to the VW auto trans that's (going) in the bus and go from there.

I just did a 2.5l conversion into a vanagon with a automatic, I used the 3.3 ring and pinion and it is awesome. 70 mph is at 3000 rpms. It has a external cooler on it. I haven't checked my fuel mileage yet. Only on my second tank.

Not from personal experiance, but looking at the swaps already done, MPG range seemed to be 18-25 depending on final set-up.

What are you doing for conversion components?

I sure hope my engine was built correctly....Ok, so it would be best to go with the doghouse cooler. Now the question is can I get the kit online or am I going to have to do some digging in VW shops. Where I live there is not to many VW parts shops or anything like that. Maybe if I drove an hour and a half to Taos.... any suggestions for online retailers?

People will say that chrome doesn't dissipate heat as well. That's true however there is no heat generated by the fan shroud to dissipate. So chrome the shroud if you like it that way. Now your cylinder tins do have heat to shed so chrome isn't good there.
Also the GOOD QUALITY doghouse style 36 HP shrouds are the shroud of choice and used on just about every high performance upright engine where a lot more heat is generated than on all of stock engines. But use the doghouse shroud you have. Do some more research and reading about sealing it with the front tin and the Hoover bit.

I'm not saying chrome is bad, but from the SP style oil cooler I'm speculating the shroud was the cheapest aftermarket POS the builder could find, chrome you do yourself on good parts is fine, but cheapo already applied chrome to tart up an already lame product like an aftermarket shroud with no diverter vanes in it is just a way for unscrupulous sellers to appeal to the bling market without making a part that actually works. Buyer beware, just because it looks dope or sick or whatever doesn't mean it won't strand you bigtime.

#1= yes, that's about right.
#2= when they are worn, there's charts with pictures all over the interweb and a dwell meter will tell you when the points are done, both items can last 20K miles or more with proper maintenance.
#3= most type 1's have solid lifters but if it's a Mexi crate motor it may have hydros, a look at the side of the sump will answer that. If in doubt adjust as solids.

I know people have CHT gauges but does oil temp give you any meaningful indication?

All in all I think I would rather have both OP and OT gauges than just the light. I don't think you really need a CHT gauge on a type 1 engine. You run out of HP long before the heads get to hot.

Agree with Randy on this - had one on a T1 engine, 1600 DP that was often run for extended periods above 5000 rpm - cam, dual carbs, ported heads, headers etc. It was pushed up grades on hot summer days in 4th. The CHT never budged more than a few degrees. In fact I was skeptical of putting one on the 1977 engine for that reason however T4 heads really spike while T1 heads are cool in comparison. They do crack after many heat cycles but not like what T4 heads go thru.

I goofed, I only saw the year in his sign line, not the country forgot that Europe had mostly TI till the end
My system is total overkill for a TI, but I like to know what my engine is doing (to a fault, sometimes) May not be needed for most people, I got my gauge for my piece of mind & some plans I have down the road.

I doubt the pushrod was the sole cause of that but it drfinitely exaggerated the issue you already had, go buy a lottery ticket because it's a damn good thing you caught that in your driveway. The fix is remove all the plugs and tap the holes for threaded pipe plugs, you could hammer it back in and do the peening and JB weld procedure but if that plug was that loose the others can't be far behind, roll those dice

Regardless of that, Balboa Island just shouts out how it is a total ACVW haven. Can't think of anywhere else where Dubs would be better suited and more at home. Particularly a real cool bus like yours.

I know people have CHT gauges but does oil temp give you any meaningful indication?

All in all I think I would rather have both OP and OT gauges than just the light. I don't think you really need a CHT gauge on a type 1 engine. You run out of HP long before the heads get to hot.

By the way, what is too hot for a TI ?

I havn't taken my dubs across but did have a run in with that ferry once. A sudden lull in the wind and a sailboat is dead in the water. Not from personal experiance, but looking at the swaps already done, MPG range seemed to be 18-25 depending on final set-up.

What are you doing for conversion components?

Hey I have a 68 bus with a stock motor.
1) I have read I should change the oil (and add the zinc stuff) and adjust the valves every 3K miles? Is that correct?

2) How often for plugs, points, and condenser?

3) Shouldn't this bus have solid lifters? I don't know how to check etc. I am familiar with adjusting valves though, at least on other cars and I do have a Bentleys.

We would like to address a couple concerns. First was the concern that someone may overlook their low oil pressure warning as a hot oil warning instead, causing them to continue driving and ultimately seize their engine. Respectfully, this would be in direct contradiction to our instructions and is also a problem that hasn't been reported in over 40 years on the market. We find just the opposite to be true and offer a link to our testimonials page as well as other forums on this site: http://www.savemybug.com/testimonials.htm

We also read that oil temperatures have nothing to do with head temperatures. We tend to agree with Gene Berg, who believed elevated head temperatures first show up in the oil temperature. While we will not argue against knowing your head temperatures we will argue that oil is the lifeblood of an air-cooled engine. Our Sensors are the least expensive, easiest to install and provide the quickest way to monitor its temperature. We shipped to 23 countries last year and are proud offer a No Questions Asked, 30-day refund policy. We encourage you to try one of our Sensors today. If you're not 100% satisfied for any reason you can return it for a full refund of the purchase price.

Thank you again for the discussion. We will continue to monitor the thread and invite any additional questions. You may also contact us directly using the information on our website: www.savemybug.com

I've had my head temp go from 350 to 415 in around two minutes, while oil temp never moved. Your oil light combined WITH a single CHT would be fine for most TI engines.

People will say that chrome doesn't dissipate heat as well. That's true however there is no heat generated by the fan shroud to dissipate. So chrome the shroud if you like it that way. Now your cylinder tins do have heat to shed so chrome isn't good there.
Also the doghouse style 36 HP shrouds are the shroud of choice and used on just about every high performance upright engine where a lot more heat is generated than on all of stock engines.

BTW.. i don't pretend to be a Type 4 specialist, i've never seen chromoly pushrods for a T4.

And I correct?

I'm no specialist at all,,,

From what I know solid lifter pushrods are different from hydraulic lifter push rods on type4. Atleast that's what I've read and heard.

And if the current owner suspects the PO has changed things it's always best to check??

I hope the info I've been given is correct? I have one type4 running chromoly steel pushrods with solids lifters running loose zero lash(modified)

I have another engine (stock) hydraulic lifters steel pushrods with standard 1.5 turns preload valve lash.

And also have another currently in my 79 Westy ( modified) running HD aluminum push rods and solid lifters at .006 valve lash.

I sure do not want to be giving out any bad information on the subject so if I'm wrong someone please clarify.

We appreciate the discussion about our Hot Oil Sensors.

Has anyone done the road yet this season??

you old cooler blocked part of the air flow to #3. Thus #3 ran too hot and did nasty things like drop valves.

I think you will want to add a doghouse fan and backing plate to that set up.

That is the best and the correct fan shroud to use. It is the doghouse shroud that was used on '71 buses only and bugs starting in '71. So that info will help you locate the appropriate cooler and cooler adapter for it. Since it's also a standard bug system you can get the parts at about any VW parts supplier. And you will also need the '71 bus specific front tin for the cooler air flow to exit. Also you will need the wider cooling fan. A doghouse fan is wider than the prior fans. So just round up all the '71 stock parts. The only remaining question is which case you have since early cases used a different size seal on the cooler mount.

And the other big issue is that your engine has an adapter under the cooler to divert oil to a filter. That's what those hoses are for and that's a bad setup so get rid of it. A filter is a tremendous upgrade but do it by fullflowing the case or using a Maxi pump. But don't tap into the system from under the cooler like yours is now.

INFO- Absolutely nothing wrong with chrome on a fan shroud.
But use the doghouse shroud you have. Do some more research and reading about sealing it with the front tin and the Hoover bit.

<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/226593.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/226593.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />
that's the front tin you will need.
And unless you want cabin heat then the engine will flow and run better with the J tubes than with heat exchangers. Although they will need some simple heat shields.

Steel tips equals aluminum tube equals solid, right?

Aluminum tips with steel body equals hydraulic, right?

Are there more combinations?

Can I remove the rocker arms without having to re adjust the valves?

Listen to Glenn. It's the tubes you check not the tips. All tips are steel.

Ok, I was just trying to work smarter not harder. I've read a ton of threads on how to check for solid versus hydraulic and they are all different.

Now I have to research how to remove the push rods. Any tips or things I should be aware of before I do this?

I would think a pencil magnet would be able to check push rods without having to remove them. If you choose the route of removing rocker assembly I would buy a Bently and refer to it for your year. There are special torque specs for the rocker stand nuts so be sure to follow the instructions or you risk a bigger problem. You will also have to recheck and adjust valve lash after this process. Very important to seat pushrod in lifter and rocker cup before torquing anything.

Still think a small magnet would be able to test pushrod without removing. Careful not to drop it down pushrod tube.

There are also tons of threads on checking for solid or hydraulic lifters I would suggest you find what you have prior to doing any adjustments. And not site I would drive it anywhere till that was squared away. Not sure of .006 lash on Hydraulic lifters would cause immediate damage other than poor performance but long term probably not good.

With Bus Depot - the only problems I've had with them is that their site will say an item is in stock when it turns out it isn't. I usually pad out my orders with stuff "just to have" to dilute the shipping costs, and on just about every order I've made they called me to tell me such-and-such is on backorder. The bummer part of it, is that on a couple of those occasions, the backorder item was the first thing I put in my basket, the thing I wanted the most.

Other than that though, no problems with them. (well, actually there was one instance where they didn't ship me something I had paid for - but that was my fault for not checking off the invoice when I got it, I only discovered it a couple of months later, far too late to complain)

Oh, and sorry, I missed where you said you already measured your clutch. I started digging and looking for a picture of a type IV engine with a VEGE tag on it (no luck, obviously, since I didn't post one) and didn't read your whole post. my bad..

It's the green one. I'm hooking up the new SVDA dizzy tomorrow, hopefully the vacuum advance works properly.
Oh, and yay! My half axle fell off while driving around today. Passenger side at the wheel hub. Five bolts had shimmied loose, and the last broke off. Shattered the bearings in the CV joint. Any tricks to getting those things to stay in other than torquing them properly? It's hard to avoid getting the moly grease on the threads...

If you could see the late style cooler you would understand immediately, it is offset towards the front of the car and lives in the part of your shroud that bumps out. The air that is heated by the cooler is dumped forward and down under the engine, not over the cylinders.

ok here is the short story of this.... mechanical fuel pump was leaking oil... put in a delete plate and shortened the fuel pump rod per recommendation here on the forum...... about a couple months ago started getting a oil leak, oil leak got worse... dropped engine thinking it was rear seal, found shortened rod has now knocked out the little plug that resides in the same oil port..... what do I do? the obvious is I will be taking the delete plate off and taking out the rod.... that is one thing that I do know..... BUT how do I address the cute little plug that popped out?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdating.php

But my engine code (5577 CJ 477328) doesnt exactly fit anywhere in that chart.

Maybe its a engine from a 77 model year?

The reason I need to find out is so I can order a new clutch and get this project on the road. I measured the old pressure plate and the diameter was 9'' (228 mm).

Also do you guys have a favorite website to order parts from? Or is http://www.busdepot.com/ my best bet.

Mahalo!

Ok that makes sense. So is there a kit out there that I could buy? Or do I have to buy each piece individually? Could somebody put what jakokombi said into lamens terms and describe each piece a bit more? maybe a link or two? Sorry I'm trying to research as much as I can and trying to find parts and just getting frustrated and confused. Thanks!

Welcome from NY!
I'm suprised you need to pass inspection, in NJ if you have historic/QQ Plates doesn't that exempt you? In NY anything over 25 is smog exempt.

There's a GREAT camp out coming up on Long Island, June 7,8,9 it's "Buses by the Big Duck" you should try to make it over for the weekend. Would be a great way to break in your new camper, on a reasonably easy ride.

It is worth it for the improved cooling, including the flow over number 3 cylinder.

It is especially worth not using a crappy aftermarket shroud!

I had all the parts laying around, but they can be had from the adds here. Can you find a junk beetle motor locally?
Even a blown motor can provide many useful hardware and tin pieces.
Steel tips equals aluminum tube equals solid, right?

Aluminum tips with steel body equals hydraulic, right?

Are there more combinations?

Can I remove the rocker arms without having to re adjust the valves?

So all of this would be worth it to get the extra cooling? Or would I be better off with just the other chrome tin? Where did you buy your parts for the cooler?

I am looking for foam pad for upper bed of my 1976 bus. There are several options on density (1.9 or 2.4) and firmness (25lbs or 33lbs or 40lbs or 50lbs), which combination is suitable?

Hey Dug,
As charter member of the GSBG, I of course, want one of those decals! Where did you get them made? And Stu, I will be at the Colby Cruze and at VW Alley. And how about all the campers at the Alley, form up our own "campground"?
Just a thought,
So I double checked my work today on the valve adjustment and I had to do a couple of them over again. I figured I would have needed to simply because I didn't tighten the adjustment nut tight enough. It went pretty quick the 2nd time around.

To check if the pushrods are steel or aluminum do I just test the tip with a magnet or do I need to take them out?

After the adjustment I went for a ride and the engine sounded really good and was smooth and easy going.

As for safety; no broken bones but I did scrape one knuckle:(
