I dont know the year, and im not really worried about it. Its a square and thats all that matters, he did say it was irs though. i dont remember if he said it was stick or auto, but i would prefer stick.

Can i fit other engines besides a VW one in there?

I know some of the baja guys put hondas, subarus, all kinds of different motors back there, but there is also ALOT more room for the larger engines.

I will have to go look up the specs for the subaru engine, i had found them somewhere at one point...

edit:
oh, also i got a free bug beam the other day, will it fit in a type three?

its not that hard to take them apart with the engine in
BUT If I Had A Space

if its F.I. you would have to take the top part apart to take the heads off anyways

I would try the spring loaded ones first if its only 1
did you bend a push rod

I have a quibble or two myself. If they're going to recommend only two sources for parts, are the ones listed the best representatives? I recommend Bill & Steve's, who have a larger selection of T3 original German parts than probably any other place. Also, is the stock fuel injection more desirable than today's carburetor choices? Thirdly, if their preference is for '68 or later, the big difference between '68 and '69-'73 models is that IRS started in '69. So why include the '68 model? That's one of the problems with articles that don't include reasons for their recommendations.

At any rate, I'm glad that a magazine with as good a reputation as Automobile has (IMHO) thinks that the Squareback is a Collectible Classic.

Topic Replies: 2

I love the look of the square!
I have a baja bug and i beat the heck out of it.
But i love the look of the square.

So im thinking of selling my bug and getting a square instead.

I found one for $150.
It has no engine, and it might need all the glass.

It seems like its in good condition rust wise, and the guy said that it has a really straight body with almost no dings at all. Interior is complete and supposedly in good shape.

Paint looks old and dry.

My questions are:

1. How much should i expect to spend to put all the glass back in?

2. What engine besides stock will fit in there? I am thinking of putting a subaru engine in my bug, is it possible to fit a subaru engine in a square? How much should i expect to pay for a used stock motor for it? Will a $free$ 1600 bug engine fit in it?

3. Im not a purist, just a lover of the look, so how much pain am i gunna get put through by not putting all the stock, oem, factory, correct serial number parts back in? Are you guys gunna help me get it on the road? (hopefully yes!)
saw this bug for sale today, real clean, straight body ,og interior, 1600. and the guys was out taking offers. i decided to talk to him. i was looking at it for a while. and well... i was considering getting it. i thought i would sell my fastback and buy it since it was alot better condition. and then it hit me that that idea that i would be selling my fisrt car the one i've worked on soo hard, for a shiny beetle, was just horrid.
That ad is wrong. That is a 66 only master cyl. (with the blue stripe, disc brakes). Has an extra internal check valve.
T-3's used several different bore master cylinders. Depending on whether it is a notch, or squareback.
Also, you will have to redo all the metal lines. Note that on the bug master cylinder, all the lines come out the top. And on the type 3, they all come out the bottom.

And then you still end up with a cobbled brake system. Do you want to trust yours and other peoples lives to that?

I just want to be clear about this also. The requirement to braze together and make a long pushrod is cobbled and unsafe enough alone to avoid using the bug cylinder.

Take a look at the valve stem hole, the top one is defiantly a type 3 trim ring. Ghias had a type one offset, except possibly a year or two. I did a writeup on theSamba, a search will bring it up if needed; do not want to go off on that rabbit trail.

One note, see the damage on the type 3 trim ring? That is from using a pry tool to take off the hubcap, versus the proper puller.

thanks guys.. I was just wondering if anyone had some comparison shots of the later type 3 rings. (4 lug).

I am having difficultly determining if any of the classifieds are the correct ones. I do have T3 rims so I want the right rings.

thanks!

so if I am looking at these two pictures.. and making an educated guess...

Picture 1: this looks to be a correct T3/Ghia trim ring ... you can see that it fits snug and the valve stem seems to come close to the center most point of the slot
<img src='http://www.type34.org/images/articles/20030316134838162_3.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://www.type34.org/images/articles/20030316134838162_3.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

Now in this color picture.. I am guessing these are likely bug or aftermarket trim rings... they dont appear to be too tight, and you can see the valve stem is nearly resting on the outermost portion of the hole.
<img src='http://www.type34.org/images/articles/20030316134838162_5.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://www.type34.org/images/articles/20030316134838162_5.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Yikes! That's not much to work with. Thanks for the information.

I figured I'd drill a couple of holes to get my bearings right.

Does the clutch tube have to have a specific angle to it or does that not matter so as it's just welded in place?

On the right side of the tunnel, you will want the bottom of your cut to be about 3" off of the floor, more is better. Try to cut shallow, as the fuel line stands off of the tunnel about 1/4". Look carefully down the inspection cover, and down the shifter hole.

Severing a full fuel line with a cutoff wheel is no good.
There's a power line into the switch and a power line out to the compressor, plus a ground. Usually power in is red, power out is yellow or blue, and black is ground. A VOM will tell you for sure. The power out to the compressor should also run the condenser cooling fan, if so equipped.

The rotors and calipers changed in 8-72 on the type 4. Until that point it used the same caliper AND rotor SIZES...as the last models of type 3.

By that I mean....a late type 3 caliper and rotor will bolt right onto a 411 through august of 1972....and vica versa.

To actually be 100% accurate, the type 3 caliper was a different part # than the 411 (but the rotor was identical). It used an internal pin and clutch in the piston to keep the piston from cocking in the bore when the rotor flexed during hard turns.
The 411 caliper through august 72 was identical in every way (size, bolt pattern, dimension and rotor) except for that internal pin and clutch.

I think we discussed this a while back. I think it was Tram or Russ who noted to me that the caliper with pin and clutch was a type 3 part. My type 4 part # list for 411 does not show it being used.

I can only speculate that the 411 did not need the caliper with the internal pin probably because the front end of a 411 is a good deal lighter than a type 3...and possibly did not have the rotor flex issue.
But in effect late type 3 and early type 4 rotors and calipers are 100% interchangeable.

Late type 4....AFTER August of 1972....all use a totally different rotor and caliper than the late type 3....and also differrnt steering knuckles than the early type 4...so nothing on type 4 after 8-1972...will fit either 411 or type 3.
For your searching amusement....the front brakes (rotors ,c alipers, pads from a411 through august of 1972...are identical to Porsche 914 through the same dates...august of 1972. They are also the same for Porsche 914 and 412 after August of 1972.

So...caliper and Rotor for a Porsche 914 up to august of 9172...will bolt right onto your late type 3.
Ray

The early 411 brakes were not Euro only as they came here in 411's all the way until August of 1972. Ray

Yes...any of the cone shaped electrical ones from a rabbit, golf, jetta, volvo, renault, saab etc etc etc.....will work just fine. They have nothing at all to do with the operating temperatures of the vehicle they come from.

I mean the ones shaped like this
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://z.ab...f%26sa%3DG

The differences in the some 40 or 50 models that are available...are (a) time to heat up and close...meaning am I warming up for 5 minutes or 8 minutes (b) hose connection sizes (c) the shape of the orifice and plate angle inside...meaning a five minute warm-up from open to closed on one model may give more or less bleed air at one point or another in that 5 minutes (d) adjustability. Some have an adjustable set-screw on them to set cold orifice size.

But in general all of them work just fine. Its just an electrically operated air leak. Nothing more. I have about 15 different part #'s of this style AAR. If you need to find one that has hose sizes that fit and want to know how long it takes to close at freezing...let me know and I will pull one out and test it in the freezer. I can then tell you the Bosch Part #. Ray

Haven't updated this thread in a while.. thought I would add some updates..

The car is running awesome. I am very pleased with my progress so far.

I'll start with the "bad" (not too bad actually).. I was rear ended, but it was just a bump.. enough to make a little ding in my overrider and make some small dents where the bumper pushed into the drivers side rear fender. The other driver took care of the damage. The paint match kinda sucks but I am eventually going to have the whole car painted so I don't really care. They fixed a dent that wasn't caused by the guy so I'm happy.

Now the good..

I just swapped my old stock calipers and rotors with new parts from TRD. They look nice and feel much better than my old warped rotors. No more shimmy when I hit the brakes.

I bought a NOS set of tie rods and ends, but realized I don't need them. When I would turn I could feel a slight flat spot and the steering wheel felt like it was catching on something. I was going swap them when I did the brakes but realized someone had already replaced the tierods, or at least the ends.. The reason the steering was screwy was because whoever installed the passenger side tie rod end didn't remove the plastic cover!! I took off the cover and the end looked new and the steering issue is gone.. AMAZING! Guess I have a set of back up rods and ends now.

I also had to get my new motor repaired, but under warranty. One of the valve retainer clips was broken, luckily it didn't do any damage to the motor. Coming up on 5k miles already..

Projects on tap..

I still need to finish the dynamat. The reason I haven't finished is because the stock material I pulled off left fuzz glued to the sheet metal.. I would rather work on mechanical stuff all day that sit and clean/scrape this stuff off. I need to get cracking on this though. The road sounds are driving me a little crazy. Also bought a late model stereo bracket so I can finally listen to something besides my ipod.

Type 3 :: Clutch Tube Repair on a 68

Subject: Clutch Tube Repair on a 68
Posted: Yesterday 12:47 pm (GMT -7)
Topic Replies: 4

I have a friend that is having serious issues with his clutch engaging.

The tranny mounts are good and the transmission doesn't lift at the nose under load. The clutch cable is new. The Bowden tube was replaced and it does need shims to give it more bow. However, when he installed the new clutch cable, he noticed that the clutch tube was loose.

This weekend we will be covering all the bases to eliminate any possible problems. The engine will come out to check the throw out shaft and bushings as well as the clutch and flywheel. The Bowden tube will get shims. The pedal assembly will be inspected. Last but not least, the clutch tube will be addressed as well.

Now, the question I have is about the metal fuel lines. It's a 68 so it had FI at one time. He now runs dual carbs and he's running the fuel through the fuel line on the right side of the car. I know about the access panel at the head of the pan but by looking through the access hole with a flash light, can you see down far enough into the tunnel to see where the fuel lines are located in the tunnel?

Can anyone tell me how far from the bottom of the pan the fuel lines are mounted? I'm going to cut into the tunnel on the passenger side of the car and I don't want to cut into the fuel line. I've seen diagrams made for bugs on this procedure but not on a Fuel Injection Type 3.

The fuel tank will be removed and the line will be cleared before I do any cutting.

Thanks in advance.

Ok I just bought a nice 69 Fasty. I am just looking for any history on the car. The car was built in Cali from what I was told. The guy I bought it from got the car for his daughter. When she graduated and moved out the car was stored in and outside for 7yrs. The F.I. was removed last fall and carbs put on. Other then that I am in the dark. Just looking for info prior to me and where I bought it.

What is the bore on the bug master cylinder??
That ad is wrong. That is a 66 only master cyl. (with the blue stripe, disc brakes). Has an extra internal check valve.
T-3's used several different bore master cylinders. Depending on whether it is a notch, or squareback.
Also, you will have to redo all the metal lines. Note that on the bug master cylinder, all the lines come out the top. And on the type 3, they all come out the bottom.

And then you still end up with a cobbled brake system. Do you want to trust yours and other peoples lives to that?

The attraction to using a bug cylinder is the price. This is about as cheap as I've seen.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=689090
2 biggest problems using the Bug master cylinder is the length of the rear brake line and you will need to weld some length to the pushrod. You can ream out the threads in the collar.

How does the inside of your old cylinder look. If it is not pitted, hone it out, and put a kit in it.

Hello all,

Is it possible to use a new Type 1 master cylinder on a Type3, or should I have the old one rebuilt? There is a considerable difference in the two!!

You can see the differences in the picture below.

<img src='http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k428/blitzvw666/Image031-1.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k428/blitzvw666/Image031-1.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

New Type 1 on left, the one that came out of my type 3 on the right...

So, can the type 1 master cylinder work? Would I have to adjust the pushrod?

This is going into a RHD fasty...

Due to the offset difference, when T3 rings are placed on T1 beetle rims the centre of the trims doesn't seat on the metal but is 12mm above the centre seat of the rim ( so you can't fit the hubcaps).

Beetle rings conversely sit 12mm out from the outer rim edge when placed on type 3 rims ( but the hubcaps will fit).

An easy way to check: Looking at Type 3 rings from the side the centre is visible 2-3 mm further out than the outside edge, whereas T1 sit below.
saw this bug for sale today, real clean, straight body ,og interior, 1600. and the guys was out taking offers. i decided to talk to him. i was looking at it for a while. and well... i was considering getting it. i thought i would sell my fastback and buy it since it was alot better condition. and then it hit me that that idea that i would be selling my fisrt car the one i've worked on soo hard, for a shiny beetle, was just horrid.

but ya i thought i'd let u all know that i'd take a rough around the edges type three over a shiny beetle anyday. i'm done ranting now

Glad you kicked yourself in the tuchus and found a clue. I don't care how nice it is- a beetle is just another beetle. It's a giant leap backwards after a Type 3.

Wow you said something NICE to a Fastback owner? Its about damn time see the pills are working
Tack you made a smart move. As Tram said its just a bug.

What can I say? Even a Fastback is better than a Beetle.

I do have to agree but you caught me off guard even being nice to one of us:)

I have run into those hubs on Type 1 engines before. Typically, they were with rebuilt engines. Like when the linebored the case, they also cut the seal area.
I have a T-3 case here that needs that done to. The engine had been run with a loose fan. I replaced the crank and fan, I still had a leak at the fan hub.
I was figuring on just putting a sand seal in the case.
