There is nothing like having the experience of having to put a few cars back to original set-up that someone has screwed up to make one want to make all repairs as original as possible. When looking for a new Old VW to buy which would you want?

I seem to a bit stumped on the wiring of the steering column.
I have the early type US I think. Termanal block only has 4 posts.

My question is:

What wires go to the four posts block?
Where does the red wire with black stripe go?

I have done a lot of searches and am still a bit cloudy....

in my 71 fasti we opened the c pillar in order to fix the rust under the 4 defrost opening [each side] in the rear. the drain hose is gone rusted.

the opening are only from 71-73

what will be your advice?

1. restore the hose like original
2. weld the 8 opening like the 70 model no holes
3. close the 8 holes but keep the shape from the out side?

At the trans shift rod, it only requires about 20 degrees of rotation between 1sr/rev and 4th/5th. If you are dropping down more than about 2" (on a type3 it's more like a 4"+ drop), you won't be able to drop all that way at once. Carefully measure and divide in half.

If you do this, it will shift very well but your shift pattern at the shifter will be backwards. To correct this, use a 73 - 76 Porsce 914 shifter.

Now read that again while looking at the photos on page 4 of my build thread and it will make a lot more sense. . .

Honestly, I don't see why anyone would choose to use framehorn mounting over a rear mount bar. . . using the framehorns only causes them to flex and twist, causing you to have to brace them. All that adds weight and complexity to a build. The factory porsche front mount along with a modified bus bar makes for a bulletproof mounting system that doesn't flex or twist. You also don't have the wheel hop issues that are always associated with a framehorn mounting.

Porsche stopped using framehorn style mounting when they began production of the 911 for good reason. A well sorted 3.2L Porsche -6 will produce way more power than your 2276 and it does it with a front trans mount and a rear engine bar.

After looking @ Pelle pix's the one where the shift rod is not hook to linkage rod....that's where the "ISSUE" is! I was going to try lowering my shifter...little diff on my app. as I'm using a 69 pan 4speed pan but did the same & used some "riv-nut" rather than weld & bolted the bushing bracket to shifter as is on the early 911's Porsche...my issue again is the amount of dog leg & when that "rotate's from going thru the gears the side to side motion hits the damn E-brake tubes & or heater control which I wanted to leave intact so I can use them...yeah I already fudged a bit! I hope by dropping the stock shifter housing down it will make it possible to just squeak by the sub frame nose bolt. I guess it may come down to open tunnel surgery & then "tube thru sub frame" but that will only work if your shift tube is like bug! OK the photos from Europe are great stuff! But I'm doing early frame horn to hold it together VS; using trans. case & engine case as the sole stress carrier. Reason lot of power & I figure it's needed as ...I'm using the Bug @ 5Speed nose cone but not the shifter

what the shifter look like before & after install on type3 pan & how does the shift tube from linkage to trans look LIKE!...this where I have issue clearing the "SUB FRAME" nose BOLT inside tunnel & then drops from there!

NEED MORE PHOTOS!!! I want my 2275cc Notch to kick my BMW M5 in the butt! It's old E28 with minor mods put's out about 310HP but also 34-3500lbs!

Over on STF RonW has a 300hp turbo scooby motor bolted to his 901 and he autocrosses the snot out of that 912. He is upgrading to a scooby trans but his 901 hasn't sploded yet.

I have a question about the tins as well. My 68 Squareback is originally from Oregon, so should I have #27 from the diagram? What about #9, the small deflector tin? It appears its either #9 OR #27 because it doesn't appear both would be needed. I have everthing else, but the bottom portion of the engine only has #22, the sleds. The car is in central Texas now, so would the #27 tins be a good idea to add when I freshen up the motor this summer? Thanks for the info.

I was thinking (if the Boss approves) we could continue this thread for people to post up for stuff they need... ONLY IF you've tried the Classifieds and eBay FIRST, and it's a part that's really holding up your project.

I know about "want ads" but have never had any luck with them, either here or anywhere else. That's why I thought I'd post a thread rather than a WTB and then wait weeks for no results to roll in.

If it's OK with Everett, maybe we could even pin this up above.

Those reflectors are stock for South Africa, required for registration back in the day. Have seen a number of Sth African imports in Australia which have them ( also red reflector disc for the rear too ).

I was afraid of that, I have a crazy idea of drilling a large hole through the subframe (depending on where at the front of the subframe the rod comes out) and welding some tubing in it to stiffen it back up.

Picked up the chassis from dip stripping yesterday and dropped that off at the powdercoater, the other smaller parts had been done already which I collected at the same time.

When I got back to work and inspected the job I wasn't all that impressed, really nice glossy finish but sloppy workmanship in some areas with several pieces needing to be re done.
Rather than leave it I took those pieces back right away and reminded them not to f*ck the pan up because if its not right they will be stripping it and re doing it.
This sloppy work seems to be a trend here where they employ the lowest paid workers who just don't give a crap and your instructions fall on deaf ears.
The front beam was the worst, heavy handed on the grit blasting blowing through the paper and duct tape getting grit inside the beam which meant removing all the needle bearings and all of the old grease which in hind sight isn't a bad thing to clean out 50 years of old grease as well as cleaning the bearings for the 1st time in its life

You'd have to swap the entire subframe. No where to mount a trailing arm on a 65 subframe as it is swing axle, where the Fastback was IRS. The spring plates have different mounting pattern and lengths.

And you'd have to change the transaxle, cv's, and axles too. Since your Fastback was an auto, the axles are different lengths.

Since the battery was dead after I left the lights on, I decided to take it into town and get it tested at the local parts store. Good thing I did as it failed their test. The battery was only a few years old so I wouldn't have expected this but I'm glad I caught it.

After installing a new battery, she started right up! You can see the temporary splice in the video. I'll do a more complete tune-up over the weekend, and if I'm bold enough, I might break out my heathkit exhaust gas analyzer and finally attempt to adjust the MPS.

I have a 911 shifter installed at the moment. I got the bug@5-speed shifter but it requires the shift rod to come out of the tunnel through the front mount for the subframe. I have a plan to overcome that problem later.

Car has been performing very well. It's really fast and sounds great with a stock muffler. It started running hot at one point, and after pulling the thermostat and wasting a bunch of time I figured out there was a loose bleed valve that had allowed air in the system. Still working on the plumbing one piece at a time. I've also gathered most of the turbo parts. . . more pics to come after I finish the radiator mounts this weekend (hopefully)

its funny you said that, i just had a look at it after getting home from school, and the top of the pump had been leaking fuel over the course of a few days.

Replace pan seal etc and foam brush on silver/black Master Series on the pan/chassis. You will more than likely save 1+ years/work in getting it back on the road. Get the seats/carpets all stripped out of it & make a plan. Cut the back up on the slope behind the battery box & the front 1" back and straight out the side.

Swap the hoods/fenders etc until you have the best parts on the square. Sand them with 320 grit/filler etc and primer them for now. Might as well get it all the same color primer.

should I swap the whole trailing arm from the fastback to the notch? or just the hub. seems to keep the good bushings and brake lines easiest is to just take the whole trailing arm.

I did see that ad, that a/c sticker is fabulous- but hey lets hear it for air cooled w/ no a/c in NYC summers!

I actually took the plunge on the one in WA state that Tram pointed out. After shipping it was still a really good price. It's on its way to OH for a bit then I'm hoping I can drive her here. I posted some pictures just for fun. Her name is Susie Moss Back after apparently sitting under a tree for a 2 years or so she was covered in moss.

She looks to be in pretty good shape, the worst of the rust is just under the drivers side front turn signal. The guy I bought it from cleaned up the fuel lines and filters and aside from possibly needing to replace the master cylinder it looks to be pretty solid.

D/A/N, I did want to ask how do you handle parking here? I usually don't have a problem in my neighborhood but I'm thinking how I'll need to get new bumpers and don't want them sacrificed to the gods of street parking. Also- can you recommend any good body shops or mechanics in the area? I'm learning but would like to have a place just in case I get in over my head.

According to his cross reference chart, it should be the correct pump.

However, like W1K1, I've gone to using a rotary pump, as they're about the same price as a mechanical one, as I've had a bunch of mechanical pumps just up and die lately. I've been using the Mr.Gasket brand S42 low pressure pump, that's available at any Autozone, Advanced, or O'Reilly's. I also had a similar problem to him with my 65 Notch, as the pump itself would vapor lock in hot weather. Heat soak finally killed it. But, I'm using an aluminum case engine in that car.

you'll need some heat to shrink the inside lip. If it starts to pucker, then you could warm it up with a torch, to get it "soft" enough to bend. Like I said before, you can bend it, but you'll have to take your time and not get in a hurry.

It sounds like you are boiling the gas and it is vapor locking.
I had that problem before and switched to a rotary electric and it hasn't happened since.

The only place I know of that would work is off of the 22 fwy and Beach Blvd. This would mean that you guys would take the 22 east transition from the 405 south, then we'd cruise down the 22 and then hop on the 5 fwy south instead of the 405 south. Both the 5 fwy and 405 fwy intersect right there at the Classic but I don't think it's as straight a shot as the 405 south like we've done in the past. If this is no problem or if any of the other OCT3 guys are alive and chime in with another suggestion, I'm all ears. Frankly, I haven't heard from anyone regarding the cruise.

Ok, Guys...I need some help. We think the fuel pump on our car is dying because, the car will run/drive/idle for a while (10-15 min) then shut off as if some one turned off the key. Then will crank for days, but not restart. If we let the car sit for a few hours, it will restart and repeat the process. The ignition switch is new (about 4 mos old) and I believe that we are getting spark, so I am suspecting the fuel pump. We have already changed all of our fuel filters too. We have what I think is the longer fuel pump push rod at 4-1/4" or 110mm...is this the proper fuel pump for that length rod (see the link below)? I was able to find this one at my local auto parts store...but they had no idea about the proper push rod for it.

We already tried what we thought was the right fuel pump (It was a Carter pt# M60176) and broke the actuator arm clean off! I guess I'm a tad chicken to just throw this new one (pt#M60175) on...now that we broke one pump...I keep having visons of the motor scattered all over the ground...

I also realized that we do not have a fuel pressure regulator on this car, do we need one with the dual solex carb set up?

Great trip and photos! reminds me of the reverse trip I did in the mid 80`s from Baton Rouge to Los Angeles in a 67 bug. Only issue was a set of burned points in the middle of nowhere West Texas. The local Western Auto had a "very old" set in the back room. What a great adventure you are having

Awesome! A trip like this is for sure on my wife and I bucket list.
That is some awesome fuel mileage as well. Is the motor all stock and still fuel injected? Do you have alot of gear inside? 41 mpg's rock on!!! Your doing it right and take your time soak all the scenery in.

Rear fender is easy to replace- just unbolt it...70-73 is all the same. The other part is harder to fix; doesn't unbolt, it's called the rear apron. Check the classified here and you'll usually see a couple listed. That will involve cutting and welding. Don't be tempted by the fiberglass version

Pelle- are you using the bug@5speed shifter? what did you have to do to make the shift linkage work?

Nate- I have 914 901's so no way to compare the nosecones but basically it doesn't have the speedo drive gear so the gear box can mounted forward about 20mm or something like that. The front mount bolts to the bottom of the control arm mounts on the torsion housing, and the rear mount just makes it easier to mount to frame horns. I got the trick shifter and the 944 sized output flanges too. All of it is extreme quality.

I just bought my first car, (I am only 15) and I was hoping to restore this 73 VW Squareback. The back bumper mount is destroyed, and there is rust through the right rear panel, enough to fix, but I can't weld and would rather replace it as it needs new paint anyway. I was just wondering, would 70-72 body parts fit on it? By the way I'm still new here, so I might have posted this in the wrong place, done something wrong, I don't know. Made my u-channel today (thanks Joe!) Only problem is that we used 1/16" thick 1" square tubing and that may be too thin to bend without "puckering". I guess I'll find out when we try to bend it Any ideas? Heat?

i recently rebuilt my carburated 1969 fastback automatic, and installed it back in. after charging the battery, it took me a while for it to get fuel, but when it did, it ran for a few seconds and then died. after that it wouldnt start.
does anyone think i flooded it? i havent been able to tweek the timing without it running. and the same goes with the carbs. or mabey i need to clean the carbs? they have been in a clean dry box for at least 2 years.

any thoughts would be great :p

Yes I am using AT axles and, I will get better numbers for you, Narrowed approx. 2in each side. I may have to modify the CV's a touch.

I started this build first with the rims I wanted and then modify the car to fit, so I still have some details to work out.

So I'm back messing with this little thing again in a quest to get it back on the road. I tore it down about a year ago but had to put it aside a while. So I picked up the motor and brought it over and began tearing it down. Just a basic teardown, cleanup, replace gaskets and seals, get the fi running properly, and replace valves and guides. And with all of this I have some questions. I'm focusing on the top end right now and need to know what is the allowable piston to wall gap so I can see if rehoning and reringing is an option. took a few pictures of my ongoing misadvenures as well

I have a crimp tool like this that does a good job crimping, that was only $20 at the local electronic wholesaler.

there are some good crimp connectors that you crimp and then heat shrink that make the joint waterproof. I am a fan of using heat shrink tubing over the crimp connections too, less ugly than the colored ends and couplers.

I've got 1 similar to that, that I've been using for 20 years now. Works great, and will do almost any kind of connector.

I have my trusty old Knipex version that I bet I've had since at least 1980!

Brian- that's no ground- it's a power feed to the FI system and that wire WILL shut you down faster than Mohammad Ali in his prime.

Since you have a 73, I'd recommend pulling the engine and trans IF I were seperating the body from the pan. I only say that, as otherwise you'll have to support BOTH once the body is off.

If you do a search of the forum, you'll find some diagrams of where all the bolts are located (I know I've posted up a pic or 2 of them), as there's 9 down each side (18 total), 2 above the rear shocks, 2 under the rear seat gray caps, 4 under the seat that are 8mm, 4 up front near where the master cylinder resides, and 2 on the front beam mounts. Then there's the wires for the brake light switches, hose or hoses for the fuel tank, the bolts for the steering coupler, the hoses/pipes for the master cylinder, speedo cable (I forget about that 1 once in a while ), wires to the starter, and wires to the engine itself (gen and coil wires). If you still have FI, you'll have to remove the ECU from the body,, along with 3 other FI wires, before you pull the engine, along with both fuel hoses to the engine. I think that's it. IF not, someone will add to it.

Later bodies like yours already have a bit of a pocket in them as seen in the photo. I don't know if that body change happened in '68 or '69, but I know my '67 Square nor my '65 Notch do NOT have that. A '69 that I have here at the shop does have the factory pocket which helps give more room.

Anyone care to show photos of the bug@5speed parts side by side to stock 901 parts?? How do they differ from the stock 901 stuff??

For heaven's sake, put a type4 and a Porsche 5-speed in that thing. . . It's the right thing to do!!
