On swing axle cars, the trans oil lubes the wheel bearing on the rear wheels. If you have trans oil coming out the drum, you have a leaking rear seal. I wouls recommend buying 2 rear axle seal kits and do both sides. Hopefully you didn't ruin your brake shoes by driving it that way. If you did, drive it, no big deal. Just pick up a new set of rear shoes and change them too while you're in there.
Tram, thank you so much for directing my attention to that post. I spoke with the guy selling it, and it looks like I will soon be the owner of a lovely 1971 squareback. I appreciate the mention of the transport company as well, all of it is very reasonable and totally doable. The car looks and sounds like it's in great shape, apparently the previous owners took really good care of it, it sat in a field for 2 years and then he replaced fuel lines front to back with correct german replacements, replaced fuel filters, adjusted pressure to make sure the FI was runny properly, replaced spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor points, condenser, cap and rotor, as well as a new coil.

I look forward to getting more excellent advice as I work to maintain and continue to improve it!

Thank you all for the good advice!

If no fluid looks to be running down the axle, you may need to remove the drum to get a better look at the cover plate that protects your rear bearings. I recently pulled the rear brake assembly off a 67 fasty in a yard. In taking off the drums, shoes and assorted springs, links, etc., I removed the back brake plate and in order to get at it, I had to remove the cover plate that houses the rear bearings. Interestingly it had what I considered tranny oil too. I thought the rear bearings were packed much like the front ones but these had oil. You may want to see if the leak is coming from there. I think once you removed the drum, you’ll know. Maybe your bearing seal or brake plate is loose. Could be a leaky rear brake cylinder?
Hope this helps.

Came out to my 67 Square today. There was trans oil flowing out of the right rear brake drum and down the street! The axle boot is not split, I actually changed it a few weeks ago. If its a seal can anyone point me in the right direction as to what to look for and a fix?
Thanks!

Been researching the last couple of hours for c-channel or u-channel steel in 13/16" x 13/16" or close to it. So far no luck, although I did find it in aluminum (1" x 1"). I guess I could cut one side off of 1" square tubing to make c-channel. Or use aluminum? Any thoughts?

That's some great progress. You've had the chance to look the rear portion of the car while off the pan, what's the verdict on the rear fenders? Are you going to be able to get them removed or are those on there for the life of the car? On the bright side, from what I can see, the pan looks to be in good shape so that's a plus for you. Thanks for sharing and look forward to your progress pics.
With the cost savings of paying less than half the other rust bucket's price you could likely have Four Corners transport it to B'klyn and still have enough dough left over to fix the brakes!

I lived in Ohio for many years and drove these cars there. As you doubtlessly know, that Ohio rust is like an iceberg- what you see is just the tip. UNDER the hood can be very nasty as these tend to rust heavily at bumper mounting points and inner fender wells, especially if it was "rustproofed" at the dealer at delivery.

Honestly- I would pass on that car at a grand, let alone four.

Plus, to me, the original fuel injection being gone would kill the deal at the outset.

Type 3 :: Ignition switch defective?

Subject: Ignition switch defective?
I'm trying to replace the ignition switch on my '72 Fastback, but it seems that all the replacement switches I keep buying are defective.

When I reassemble the electrical switch and key cylinder into the steering lock housing the key will not spring back from the start to the on position. The steering lock mechanism has a large spring that causes the key to spring back, but when it's all assembled the plastic electrical ignition switch is providing too much resistance and it doesn't spring back.

Other people on here have posted that the plastic ignition switch itself has a spring in it that should help the key to spring back. Is this correct? In the below picture when I turn the ignition switch with the screwdriver there is a lot of resistance and when I remove the screwdriver it doesn't spring back. Should it?

Thanks,
Mark

was that "sludge" deadening on the pans etc? it's supposed to be good but an ugly mess in my opinion..

Mark.

yea I believe it was some type of deadening. There were small rust spots showing through so I though better safe and remove all. Luckily the pan was in pretty good condition. Some pin holes under the battery section and some rust and holes on the outer rockers. Unfortunaetly we repaired the rockers with new strips of steel plate to repair the holes, found out after that ISP sells new rockers sections.

I'll make it unanimous. Pass. Where I live that's a $1000 car at most. You cannot imagine what kind of job fixing all that rust will be. I'm even skeptical of the mechanical condition; those stock Solex carbs are not that hard to sync. Something is worn out.

On the turn signal base (that attaches to the body) the female threaded attachment point for my turn signal lens is broken off, and every used one that I look at has it broken off too. Is this is a common problem?

Does anyone have an easy fix?

I can definitely "make it work" but I'd like to know if anyone has some good ideas, or a guy to send it to.

Thanks,
Robo.

They ALL will need rust repair/new paint eventually. The fenders/hood/hatch are bolt on items that can be patched off the car and bolted back on. It does have the stock Solex carburetors for maximum reliability & cooling with the black oil bath air cleaner!

Had my sill plates polished and clear powder-coated. I took them straight from the polisher to the powder coater without even unwrapping them; in hindsight I should have taken them home and cleaned the polishing compound out of all the little detail areas, as they just shot the powder coat right over it. It isn't really noticeable, but it's one of those little things that will bug me.

Dropped it off at ProFlow Performance this morning to have a few things looked at. Still need to address some wiring issues (no blinkers or tail lights). But should be done soon. I also have some bumpers on the way, hopefully next week. If they look as good as the pics I will leave them looking chromed but if the are not as nice I will black them out.

It's good that the seller is forthcoming about the condition of the car, but I'd say pass on that amount of rust unless you want to get involved in some serious restoration work. None of the rust in those pics is "mere" surface rust that can be treated...it's all holes and it's rusted through. Even if the seller came down to $2500 it'd still be too much.

Sure it looks drivable, but beneath what you can see is probably a situation like some of the ones in this thread.....scroll through and look at the pics and you'll see what kind of repairs could be in store for you.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=550122&highlight=rust+dangerous

Unless you're skilled with welding and metal work, body repairs are tough and expensive to have someone else do. Rule of thumb tends to be that it's better to save $ for a car with a good body but might need mechanical or engine work. That car is going to need all 3 kind of work!!

It was supposed to be a tounge and cheek joke. I don't call 70 and later cars "fat chicks", as I prefer to call them "late models", which is what they are. I've got 2 of them here, along with 2 "earlies". Remember, the type 3 was an upgrade to the beetle.

It does look mostly complete and original (other than the re-spray). I'd get him to knock down the price, since it needs 4 tires (they're dry rotting as seen in the 1 rim/tire photo). Add in the cost of the fenders (you've got an idea what they'll cost), and see IF he'll send you some pics of the bottom (floors), to see IF they've been patched or are rusting.

With the limited pics, I'd say 2500 to 2800 for it though. Mainly, due to rust, the carb swap (it's supposed to be fuel injected), and needing tires. Add in there's wear on the drivers seat, and a missing cover for the seat mechanisim, paint overspray on all of the rubber bits (they could have taped it off better), and it probably needs new seals, are all factors in the price. Remember, this is a "salt belt" car, and you don't know what's hiding under the re-paint. If he won't cme down some, then I'd pass on it.

Subject: To buy or not to buy '73 Squareback
Topic Replies: 11

I've been looking for a squareback for a while now, not averse to the later models and I found one not too far to me. I've read through the buyer faq's but still have a few questions...

I'm primarily looking for a daily driver, but I'm willing to do resto (keeping it as close to stock as possible) as I drive it. It's a dual carb, pretty sure most of the engine isn't stock, the guy had it rebuilt 6 years ago. From talking to him it sounds like all the work he had done was about 6 years ago.. He said it runs fine, but has problems in a low idle because he can't get the dual carbs synced. It also has rust bubbling at the top of each fender near the windshield that I know is a common problem area, as well as a small hole in the drivers side heating channel. There's some surface rust on the front corner of the hood. He's asking $4,000 after reading through a lot of these forums this seems high to me.

I've sourced out some fenders as well as a hood and am not averse to replacing them if need be, but I'm trying to figure out if I need to ask him to go way lower or if this price seems fair.

He said the rest of the car is as stock as he could do, he will include the factory a/c, original radio, and original exhaust. Right now he said he has a 4-tip manza style exhaust which I would probably attempt to replace with the original exhaust, assuming it's in working order.

I'd love any advice, I've been wanting to purchase a classic for a long time, and pretty much fell head over heels with the square

It's posted for sale on here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1461519

Sidenote-I've been looking for squares in Ohio area because that's where I'm from, but I hope to eventually bring it to brooklyn to live with me...

I understand the original hoops on a Type 2 truck were made with square tubing....this is tricky to bend I found a shop in Seattle that will bend my square stock to my specs but it is pretty expensive. Can I do this myself?

Will something like this work:
http://www.harborfreight.com/16-ton-hydraulic-pipe-bender-35336.html

You could probably do it, but you'll have to take your time. You might even have to do the bend in steps (bend a little, and move over slightly, and bend again). It's tricky bending square tube, but it can be done.

Where in Brooklyn are you? You might not be far from me up in Greenpoint. Where's the car? Do you have pics?

Better yet, you should recopy this post and start your own thread in the main part of this forum and you'll probably get loads of advice. That's how I wound up buying the Squareback I bought a year ago. People smartly directed me away from certain cars and towards others.

Thanks and good to know. I'll start a new one now... I'm in Clinton Hill area, but looking in the neighborhood of Ohio where I'm from. Hoping to fix what needs to be fixed there and then eventually bring it here with me.

The car is actually posted for sale on here, I just wasn't sure about etiquette when discussing members cars for sale...

I'm just trying to anticipate repairs and basically not do anything stupid.

Or the funky breather.

Looks like the stock FI distributor, but an unused mechanical fuel pump. Strange engine!

That breather cap blowing off won't kill your engine. You may get the top oily but it won't kill it.

Looks like the heat exchangers and hoses are hooked up, so you aren't losing cooling air...

I'd tune it and check for air leaks and also intake vacuum leaks. Forget the add-on cooler... my stock '71 runs in 105 degree heat all day without overheating.

That's actually an early type 3 generator, used in 67 and 68. I've got 1 here just like it (minus the black paint).

I do have to agree with KTPhil, tune it, as it shouldn't have a problem. It looks like all of the cooling tin is in place though, so you might need to look under it, and see IF anything is missing. Here's a link to the tin page;
http://classicvw.org/gallery2/v/partsbook/Parts-book-pictures-only/enginetin.jpg.html
Note, you should have either #9, or #27, not both.

I've driven for hours in 95+ degree heat without an add on cooler, and last summer we ran 75 mph in 114* heat all afternoon.

I've got a 64 notch and want to swap to later disk (Porsche pattern for me ). Is it better to go 66-71 or go 71+ ??? Far as i know the caliper and bolt up area is the only difference on the 71+ spindle thanks for any info . Just want confermation on spindles before I buy some .

You want an early disc spindle to modify for wide 5 disc use

Does the 66-71 spindles work on early beams ( type 3 ) the ball joints and arms the same ?

Ideally you want the 66 to 71 spindles, as the calipers and rotors are easily found. the 72-73 rotors and calipers are larger, but are limited in availability. They'll also swap though.
Like I mentioned to the OP, the cut off dates for changes are what you have to watch for, since tie rod ends changed in size in 67, and the inner wheel bearing changed in mid 68. Note, the drum steering arms will directly bolt to the 66 to 71 disc spindle, so that will save you from having to change the tie rods and steering box drop arm. I hope this helps.

I'd love any advice, I've been wanting to purchase a classic for a long time, and pretty much fell head over heels with the square

no joy! pulled the B pistons and added the ones from the box marked A... Put #1 on, got everything in place and no change! PUlled another A out of the box, let it share a pin out of A and measured... Same height. Different make of piston, same result. SO, they are both either B sets or they are both A sets and my roller crank rods are shorter than stock... Either way, I'm STUCK!

Last week I pulled the motor and placed it on stand while I waited for some rod tubes that were being sent. Tubes arrived yesterday so this morning I took the exhasut off as well as the exchange box from that 1-2 side. Removed the spark plug, rocker assembly, rods and head and replaced all the seals and tubes. Put the tubes in place and seated the head back on and tomorrow will be checking the torque (I understand it may be at 22lbs) on both heads as well as adjust the valves. When I installed my thermo, I placed the bracket on the head incorrectly and thus the the brass fitting that screws into the rod that lowers and raises it tore into the rod tube causing me some ass-pain with an oil leak. Why? Because the thermo expanded at an angle, directly next to the tube. With the thermo bracket seated properly, there's plenty of clearance that I shouldn't be having this issue again and the thermo will raise and lower correctly. At least that's what it looks like it'll do. I wondered why the thermo had expanded at an angle and now I understand why. What a difference the thickness of a bolth makes. I should have this engine back together and in the bay on Sunday and get back to adjusting those carbs so I can enjoy some driving!

I have one of those Harbor Freight pipe benders that I use for 1.25" round galvanized pipe, but I have not tried square pipe or full 90 degree bends. It will kink the round pipe if you get too carried away. You might be better off to pay the Pro to do it.

thanks for the comments. Installed the 2180 today. 160hp / 152 torque at the crank. I know "type 1 upright in type 3 body problem. I have installed oil temp and head temp gauges to monitor this engine. I have also opened up the engine compartment directly below the rear cowls to bring in fresh air along with blocking off the lower section where the air was originally directly. Hopefully this will help with engine temps. If this does not work I will try ducting under the car directed to the back of the fan. Worse case I will have to sheet metal the engine compartment in.

Like you said, frustration. I don't mean to come off as an asshole.

I will do that with the hockey stick for 4th. If it ends up I need a new transaxle I have a plan.

I talked to Mark today at strictly foreign, looks like I can make out by selling him irs and, 2 12 v swingaxle cases. Found a place that was junking them at 25 a case, so I am going to buy 8 or 10 of them, and then "trade" for a rebuild super street freeway flyer transaxle for around 2-250. Just need to load them up and drive the 4 hours each way to drop them off, then wait 2 weeks and drive back and get my trans. 2 weeks turn around, probably go Monday.

Found these for sale cheap, so i might buy these and run em. Right now I have some rice rocket 14" 's since the 17's blew.

So I'm proceeding with building a hoop/bow/canvas set for the truck but I'm running into some technical issues.

Tram, I appreciate your help anytime I can get it. I'm going to play with it some this weekend and see if there is any damage inside or if it just needs a good cleaning. The mercedes guys dont mess around on their forums, and I cant remember how I stumbled upon them. They go into super detail about adjusting the throttle switch using an ohm meter. It confirmed my suspicions about the throttle switch though, so I just wanted some friendly vw back before I move forward.

don't forget about the missing plug in the timing hole on the pulley tin.

that's an aweful job on the fuel line plumbing, and the usual fuel filter in the engine compartment NO-NO.

The breather on the breather box won't help with oil spray in the engine compartment, there will be a mist coming off that when the engine is warm.

I just found it funny the person Tram recommend to talk to about a transmission(since we both live in Oregon) is the same one who had nothing to offer, just to tell me what I already knew.

I just recommended him because he has a lot of parts and is wrecking these cars out quite often, and because he's sort of local. I have no clue what his actual inventory is.

As to telling you stuff you already knew, nobody has an actual inventory of that, either.

I know you're frustrated, but frustration never fixed anything.

Why don't you try shifting it manually into 4th back at the trans with a vice grip as a shifter (rod disconnected), then start it and let out the clutch and see if it'll stay in gear that way? It'll probably buck and then stall, but it shouldn't pop out. You'll know if it's linkage or trans right off that way.
