Subject: 59 lolight vert - need buyers advice
Hi all
I am a Ghia newbie (have been soaking up info on this forum for about 4 weeks). Have always dreamt of owning one though and am now seriously considering becoming a Ghia project owner.

From what I have soaked up so far I know I want a lolight and if I can find one I'd love for it to be a convertible. I can do mechanical stuff myself (bodywork not so sure); many folks so far tell me its better to spend some more and not get a total rust/bondo bucket for cheap only to then spend gazillions in reviving.

I found this one in the Classifieds

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=858221

It's certainly not what I would have done to a lolight; my plan would be to bring it back to look mostly historically accurate (ok, say 90%). What I am worried about is what's under the paint, the condition of the the chassis /rockers /body; structural soundness overall. The seller doesn't seem to have history on The Samba (then again, neither do I )

I am planning to go see the car for myself. Good lolight verts seem rare enough. I think the car has potential (especially if the metal is sound). Is $14k in the ball park for this car? (I know the answer is 'it depends')

Any words of wisdom from the experts on this forum would be greatly appreciated. What do I need to do to get under this car's skin?

Thanks a bunch

You can do what I did, take your GPS along for a ride and make a mental note of how far off your speedo is and remember the next time you are driving. Cheaper than sending off your speedo.

there are two lights in a ghia vert to the interior light which is part of the rear view mirror assembly. Does anyone know if both lights come up one side of the windshield frame, or does one wire come up one side and one come up the other?

Thanks

Of course it's not going to be correct. Your original 165R15 tires had a rolling diameter of 25.7 inches and you've replaced them with tires that have a rolling diameter of 22.8 inches. Thus, your speedometer is going to read roughly 12.7% too high. You could try calling North Hollywood Speedometer to find out if they can re-calibrate your speedometer, but it likely will not be inexpensive.

It was to meet new USDOT safety regulations for minimum headlight height. It also refreshed the look - made it look a bit more "perky" - to meet concurrent tastes. remember, in this era, most Detroit manufacturers completely restyled the majority of their models year by year.

So new! New! NEW! was the norm in the burgeoning consumer culture of the time. Volkswagen had a tendency to thumb their nose at this, by continuously evolving their products with mostly subtle changes inside and out, rather than annual radical redesigns. That much of the KG's sheetmetal styling survived a production run of 19 years is rather amazing. The only other cars I can think of with a similar run are the 1963-1992 Porsche 911 and the 1966-1993 Alfa Romeo Spider.

I've looked around the other postings but cannot find the answer to my question. Just out of curiosity, can anyone shed any light on why VW changed from the Low Light body style to the later (up through '74) body style? Was it a decision based on the ease or simplicity of body assembly? Safety issues? Maintenance? Styling?

also make sure the seal is on correctly, it will go on either way but it is tapered to one side so that the window doesn't do that. Look down the seal lengthwise to see the difference.

Thanks for the info! I was planning on putting down some sound insulation as well, before the carpet, but the moisture retention could be an issue.

Since it is a cotton based material, I would be concerned about moisture absorbtion and retention. Interior firewalls and sides may not be a big issue, but I would be really afraid of it on a floor. Think about it and maybe research it a little more.

Also, your biggest concern is acoustical. Radiant barriers are great for reflecting or retaining heat but can suck at sound deadening (Think mylar blankets).

That is the seal that slides up into the post? I would use a little bit of seal adhesive at the top where it touches the roof seal, and a few other drops to keep it from migrating down.

If your glass is pushing it out off the car you either need to adjust the glass in the window track, or perhaps look at your door hinges to see if the door is sagging.

I need some help. I can't seem to keep the weather seal that goes on the Quarter window pillar in place. If I close my doors with the window rolled up, it knocks it off of the pillar. Does anyone have some pics of how the window looks rolled up. I think I need to adjust my windows or glue to seals, they don't fit very snug. thanks guys.

pretend like you are sitting in the back seat behind the passenger. Stick out your right hand and put it on the metal piece that would be next to your right thigh. Look on the back of that piece of metal. There should be a slot about 1" wide with a larger round hole at one end. Shine a flashlight down that hole and you'll find your bolt. Then go to the other side and do the same thing. I think you'll need a 15mm wrench with an extension.

I agree with Richard.

The two bolts are through-bolted. I think the weakest area would be the metal loop that comes up around the seat belt hanger and/or the damage it could receive raised up as it is.

I like all your comments. All we can do is hope for the best.

I am just a bit worried about you using those two relatively tiny bolts to hold it on the car. <snip>

Ahem - these are _not_ "tiny" bolts. Neither are they "relatively tiny."

They are M10s.

Some observations: A rear axle is held on by three and goes through far more shock and stress than your body can tolerate by a few orders of magnitude.

The seat belt only needs be stronger than the body it protects by a relatively modest amount, not three orders of magnitude. You can hang a man on a number 2 screw . . . M10 grade 8.8 bolts are rated at about 1735 lbs tensile load - and far greater in shear. A 200 lb occupant under going a ten G deceleration (enough to black out from), would experience 2000 lbs of force, but with a three point belt, each strand would experience about 667 lbs of force or so, presuming evenly distributed - a very generous safety factor...

You could reasonably expect the entire convertible mounting point to twist substantially before those bolts might break, even if they are grade 8.8 and not grade 10.

In short; you need not worry - the bolts are over-engineered. If you're going to worry, be concerned that the bolt that holds the belt to the bracket needs to be in full shear, not because of risk that the bolt is inadequate, but because if that bracket twists, it is more likely to fail due to an internal construction flaw of some kind.

Has anyone tried Ultra Touch's Radiant insulation? It's a foil backed insulator. I was at my Home Depot and they don't have Quick Roof, but they had this stuff which was pretty close, description wise. It's about 60 dollars for a 4 foot x25 foot roll. strikes me as a good deal. Rated at 3.7 R rating, and reviews say it has good acoustic insulating properties as well.

For a true fifties feel, you should really let your face engage the metal dash or steering wheel in a collision.

stu, the seat rails are the same distance apart thru the 1968 model year. 1968 seats had integrated headrests blended into the seatback; real wide and not especially elegant. 1969 Ghia seats had narrower seat tracks, and their headrests were on very low posts which made them look alot slimmer. '66 and '67 seats were low-back and had a backrest release mechanism near the bottom.

TMI is selling stock-style Beetle seat cover kits which have additional padding along the side bolsters to make them look like sport seats. I don't know if they offer this style for Ghias too. If so, then I'd suggest finding suitable low-back Ghia seats and installing these kits to avoid hassling with universal brackets and aftermarket/junkyard seats.
I am just a bit worried about you using those two relatively tiny bolts to hold it on the car. I would think the hardware would need to be at least as massive (and the same grade) as the bolt holding the seatbelt hanger to the bracket.

On a separate note, the old, stock Karmann-Ghia *is* a time machine, designed to transport its owner back to the 1950's! (At least that's what I feel like, every time I get to go for a drive in one, oldies playing on the AM radio, jiggling down the road on the bias-plies...)

Just something to gauge it by.
I bought a "67" this summer running for $750 but it has a serious oil leak. It has the towel bars & back up lights. The bone yard near me has a "71" with no interior or wheels I offered him $350 and he said he'd take $300 for the motor & trans only. He wants $150 for all the glass. The floor and body aren't too bad tho. It could be put in shape. It never hurts to haggle. You never know he may take a lot less.

One of these:
http://www.summitracing.com/search/Brand/Tilton-En...toview=sku
I have heard that they are able to take the heat as well as carter red fuel pumps
I usually run a 1/8" feed line to the turbo and have not had any problems before with oil blowing out, back then I did have a dry sump system. Also if the oil supply is too much I can put a restrictor in the feed line.
BTW, heres a vintage shot of my old dry sump setup for reference:
<img src='http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr94/projekt143/1971%20Ghia%20-%20CLKWRK/3612.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr94/projekt143/1971%20Ghia%20-%20CLKWRK/3612.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />
things to note about it:
- primarys wre too big
- turbo was too big
- scavenge lines were restrictive
- exhaust was too loud (dual zork tubes)
- flow was inefficient, WG reversed flow when open and the header was tri-y configuration
- it still hauled ass

A dry sump setup would solve all my scavenging woes but there is no room for fancy oil pumps under there, the header hogs all the room.

The AutoStick pump is not an option for me as I need to filter the oil somehow

Hi
My 65 ghia project has no seats and I am having problems locating replacements. I understand the rail widths changed in later models? What are my options. Its not neccessarily going to be stock so am open to any ideas. Can I buy a universal rail bracket to put any seat on there?
Imdont think I wasnt to drill and bolt through the floorpan.

Many thanks

have you thought about an ATF pump from an autostick car?

as I understand it the turbo will see wayy too much oil pressure when you tap into the oil pressure warning switch. Ive read a lot about people having problems with it busting or ruining the oil seals within the turbo. You can use it as a scavenge pump and Im planning to use mine to route up to the front for an oil cooler which should then gravity feed back to the Berg sump.
Just an idea.

The only thing I dont like about the ATF pump is how small the ATF gears are, but then again oil should not compress and act hydraulically and continue to push the oil out my oil cooler.

what scavenge pump are you considering?
Ive also read that the center section of the turbo produces a lot of heat to the oil so that might be something to think about (just wanted to know what you are doing on that) so oil lines for that need to be up to par with the heat requirements. Hot oil messing up rubber oil lines on top of a hot turbo makes for a pretty cooking expeirience.

Really really like this build and I am officially subscribed.

Just sandblasted my 73 four lug ET46 ghia wheels and can not find a paint shop that has the origianl color code or paint chip to match.
Went to Home Depot to match with spray cans, but nothing exact.

Anyone out there no the original color code??? It seams more like an egg shell or satin finsh than gloss.

If you are taking the body off I would remove the doors and put in some temporary support brackets. A triangular brace works great. Bolt one side to the hinge brackets and the other end to the latch catch bracket. This will keep the body from flexing which could be a really big problem if there is rust in the rockers!

I bought this 63 coupe earlier this year. It was imported to the UK in 1998 from California I believe. I'd like to know more about it's history in the USA and would appretiate any information! The original colour was Terra Brown but it is now a different shade of Brown if that helps?

There are two options for the WG, off the turbo flange or off the header. I might set it up off the flange later if room becomes an issue:
<img src='http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr94/projekt143/1971%20Ghia%20-%20KERMIT/KERMIT%20-%202332t/DSC02363.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr94/projekt143/1971%20Ghia%20-%20KERMIT/KERMIT%20-%202332t/DSC02363.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />
Lucky for me ghias have lots of room for engine stuff. I don't think this WG location would work in a beetle.
I am a little concerned about the added volume of the WG pipe I added, this may offer better boost control but it will contribute to lag if it increases the primary pipe volume, if this happens I will have to resize the turbo.

The turbo came with the cb kit, Air Research and was sized for a 2332cc, it is a t3/t4 hybrid, the hot side had A/R .63 cast into it.

I am running into another problem now with so much piping I dont have any room for my oil lines, I am thinking of getting a pump cover that ports to the right side and locate my oil filter on the right instead of the left where most people put it.
There will also have to be an electric scavenge pump for the turbo there too.
As for the heater boxes I am going to stick with the 1 1/2" ones till they become a problem then I will make a set of bigger ones.
Whatever you do, I strongly recommend you do NOT cut out, modify or otherwise mess with the stock seat rails. It's nice to be able to "go back".

I have seen people make their own brackets and the best of them bolt in and spread the load over a wide area. You don't want to have the seat anchors tear out in an accident. If you do some more research on this site, you'll probably find some that you like.

ok, I looked at the plugs, wires, cap etc. and everything looks new condition.

Next I took out the stationary idle jet screw on the right side and blew it out, but it looked clean. I also tried adjusting the large bypass screw on the left side. Nothing has made any difference.

I did not try adjusting the choke as yet, but one thing I noticed is that when I start the car cold, it idles for a few minutes, then begins to stall. I don't bump the throttle, so the fast idle cam is still engaged.

I do see gas flowing from the tube that hangs out into the top carb opening(not sure what it is called). It appears that this flow begins to subside before the car begins to stall.

Lastly the electromagnetic cutoff valve does appear to be working. If I disconnect/reconnect it I can hear it click open.

Bottom line is that the car has run fine with this carb for years, but doesn't get a lot of miles. I'm thinking carb rebuild, but here is my question. It's a Bocar so would I be better off getting a Solex to rebuild, versus rebuilding the Bocar?

Yes, I've had the same issue AND I've set mine up incorrectly. When I get back to Sydney tomorrow night I'll move the whole pedal cluster back by a few mm. Hopefully that action will create the 1mm of travel that is presently missing. There is supposed to be Zero force on the master cylinder when the pedal is not depressed.

The "do not adjust" line is just BS. How else is one supposed to fine tune the free-play?

Thanks Nicholas, there I go again trying to make something difficult when it is

a very simple explanation. My other concern was that I had taken my push rod

apart to paint, ( I did measure the length before dismantling) and that was after

reading "not to adjust length of push rod". Wanted to be sure everything was

"correct" hence the ?

Hey Butch,
I think if you read the section in the book more carefully there is a part that explains it well enough. The 1mm freeplay is seen at the plunger attached to the pedal. When there is 1mm there, the foot pad will move about 5-7mm because of the lever-fulcrum relationship. So, if you see either, the set up OK.

<img src='http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/405656.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/405656.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />
Item #3 moves 1mm and the foot pad moves 5 to 7 mm
