Clean the gunk out with small screw driver or drill bit, then tap the 12 point in with a small hammer to fully seat it. If they're stripped I use a large pair of vise-grip brand vise grips that have the serrated jaw tips.

Wow! I didn't know it had a history - enough to where a guy in the UK knows about it!

Yes, the PO I bought it from had "rat-rodded" it quite a bit so it looked like an airplane. I've spent the last three weeks scraping all the spray paint off the car, as well as the additional 5 coats of paint over the OG. It's looking great.

I also raised the front of the car just enough that I could drive it. It was so low that with two of us in it, it would hit the asphalt patches on the road.

I've been trying to get ahold of Mike at the House of Ghia. I look forward to hooking up at the NW bug run.

It is a fiberboard much like the door panel material. It is covered in vinyl and does have a decorative beading around the outer edge to take up part of the seam between this panel and the rest of the seat material. It fastens to the back of the seat frame with 6-8 metal clips over the horizontal bars on the back of your seat, then it is secured with a few screws along the bottom. Having an original would help explain. An upholstery shop may have an alterative suggestion to make something for you.

after striking out at VWs on the green swap last weekend, I swung by the pick-n-pull on Federal just north of 76 and holy shit a Ghia in the yard.
its a 69 in primer, originally orange, all glass there. some chrome trim gone. engine was down to a long block, but free without much end play.
non stock front seats. gauges gone. body rough, but sad to say much less rot than my current restoration project. nose wrinkled under a thin bondo coat. right headlight bucket area previously repaired.
doors in good shape. passenger door would have been going home with me if i packed my impact screwdriver.
its in the SW import corner near the fence. good luck

Fantastic work, very impressive. What kind of paint was used?

Acrylic enamel I think it was. It's part of Napa's paint system, which if I'm not mistaken it just a rebranded Sherwin Williams paint. Used my little hvlp touch up gun.

When I got my ghia, it had been ratrodded in the style of an airplane. The PO had removed all the seat material, and just had the bare springs with a lawn chair cushion over the top! It was more comfy than it would look.
<img src='http://62ghia.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Ghia-5.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://62ghia.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Ghia-5.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.

I got the TMI kit today (brick red) and there was no back to the seat upholstery! I called the dealer, and he said there was like a fiberboard back for these front seats, and I am missing it.

After a bunch of searching I found this image:

<img src='http://i786.photobucket.com/albums/yy142/kevinhinny/P4270456.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i786.photobucket.com/albums/yy142/kevinhinny/P4270456.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />
I can't quite figure out what the edging is, where it's mounted to the seat back or what it's made out of.

Is this something we can recreate with doorskin, a vinyl wrap and a bead? Does it use clips?

Thanks for your assistance.

The type of uprights you are looking at can be forged in one piece, or in two pieces and the spindles pressed in the upright assembly....even sheet weldments and with separate spindles. If made correctly and with proper heat treat all are good practice and usable. Even with a light street car you might want to have them Magnafluxed when you take them out of the box (or rice paper).
The operative word here is "correctly".

ghia drop spindles for a ball joint front beam, I did a little research and it seems that a vendor in Arizona , (Airkewled) offers solid forgings that are one piece ??
I read that most others sell two pieces, "pressed in" spindles - are these safe? Anybody had one of these fail ??

Yes, that looks just like the tool I use. Have you cleaned the bolts out with WD-40 and a toothbrush? Some early CV joint boots had 6mm hex bolts but yours look like 12 pointers. Just counted, it has twelve, not ten, teeth.

Grinding or filing flats on opposing sides of the stuck bolt heads before attempting to grip them with vise grips is sometimes handy. Grinding the heads off altogether is sometimes faster than welding bolts to them. The threaded part usually spins out freely once torque is relieved.

I have the long one with the hex body and the socket one, neither one fit. the bolt that I cleaned is on the other CV but the pic came out too dark. I'm going to try grabbing the heads with a vise grip and if that doesn't work then I'm pounding a hex bit into them and last resort I guess I'll weld bolts on them but they are going to come out one way or another.

My local VW parts supplier had something like this that I used:
http://www.partsplaceinc.com/products/product-deta...p;sku=3481
I had to clean the bolts out so there was enough room to tap the tool in far enough to get a good bite. Looking at your pics you'll also need to clean those bolts out some so the tool will go in further.

On a side note, these 2 highly popular parts suppliers offer a an 8mm 12 pt socket like yours for removing thoe bolts.
You might try to clean those bolts out real good and then retry you're #8
if the new flywheel is 12v and the old tranny was never modified from the 6v configuration then you need to grind the inside of the tranny around the bolt holes. Google it and you can probably find pictures. To put in a 12v starter there is a bushing you tap in to the tranny to adapt for the smaller shaft.
The tin may be slightly wider but it will go in.

Close up photo of CV joint boot bolt? I found the tool, it just says, "8mm" on the side of the actual ten-pointed insert bit.

It might be called a CV boot bolt driver. Metric car parts stores should all have it.

You can run a wire without drilling anything, or at least you can on a 69 anyway. On the opposite side to the stock wiring harness in the engine bay, you can feed a wire through up in the top right corner - over the inner wheel arch - there may be some pieces of foam in your way but they just pull out, it will come out eventually behind the rear right trim panel inside the car. From here, you will need to poke it through exactly like the stock harness so it enters the space under the 'ridge' of the aluminium threshold plate. Next it will go under the carpet near the front of the heater channel and then up behind the heater pipe that goes to the screen defrosters and into the area behind the dash.

I did the same as you are planning, with some additional wires for gauge senders also.

What tool is it I'm supposed to ask for? When ever I ask I'm given a standard 12 point M8 triple square 8mm socket. That does not fit any of the CV bolts on that side. The M6 is too small. I cleaned the bolt head and picked any crud that was in there but the standard M8 does not fit the bolts on that side. I can't remove the trailing arm or the trans until I get the CV joints and axle out.

Here are pics of the two trailing arms. I removed the drivers side, no issues. The passenger side is different and the CV bolts are also different.
Can you see that the bolts on the trailing arms don't match? maybe this means something to someone. I need to get this off, I have new trans and tailing arms ready to go in. HELP!

I got mine at Carquest. If your new boots came with bolts, take one with you to the tool store of your choice. The tool looks like a torx driver for a 3/8" socket set. Pretty sure it's called a ten-point 8mm driver. Allan wrenches and torx drivers will not work because they each have six points, not ten; replace any bolts with buggered heads while you can.

We`re looking to make a move in the future, and with all the other stuff that`s being moved, I would rather just ship my `71 Ghia. So if anyone has a company they would recommend, or not recommend, please let me know.

The problem with that is that you will have to drill holes in the rear firewall and somewhere else up front to get the wire into the trunk. The only way to route the feed wire without drilling holes is to run it under the car. I would suggest running it along the pan where the pan bolts are that way you can support the wire with the bolts and somewhat protect the wire by running up in that channel that the pan bolts are in. Then up at the front you are going to have to decide how to get that wire up into the trunk. You might be able to squeeze it through where the brake lines go thru. Good luck.

I had a similar situation a couple of weeks ago removing the right side drum. I bought a breaker bar, heated the nut, etc. Eventually in my situation it was crap in the threads that was causing the nut to hang. I shot the nut up with penetrating oil, let it sit for a while, cleaned up the threads and then heated with a heat gun so I wouldn't fry any grease or rubber inside. I used an impact gun and it broke loose.

Also consider counter torque when you're doing this; make sure the wheel is on and on the ground.

I redid all the tie rod ends, and added the steering damper with that little billet block to the beam. It worked wonderfully! I pulled the gas tank for access. Only bummer I had was the bolt for the damper into the billet piece is SAE, not metric. <sigh> But short of that it was without incident, and the bump steer is gone, and the rattles. Thanks for the assistance!

Wanted to have a third brake lite and have bought from Superbrightleds.com before. I ordered and recieved this in just a few days. Cheap, $12.

Subject: Wiring from battery to behind dash?
I'm adding a new power feed from my battery to an additional fuse block on my 62 ghia convertible, so I can keep all the stock wiring - but have 90/100w lights, seat warmers, stereo, etc.

I'm using a blue sea blade fuse block that includes a ground bus. it's a marine thing, and super tight. I have some 14/2 stranded sheathed, long enough from front to back - but I really don't want to drill any holes anywhere. I want to be able to put the car back to stock really easily in the future.
http://www.bluesea.com/products/5026/ST%20Blade%20...s/featured

How would you recommend running that cable from the battery to behind the glovebox, where I will be mounting this new fusebox? Could I bring it thru the pan under the gas tank, or do you think on top of the floor, under the carpet the best way?

Thanks for the input.

Thanks Brassneck!
Good idea, ive been jacking it up from behind front tire then 2X4 under beam then move jack to front. Always too long a process.
I had recieved 2 front window seals from HOG and no back one. They should be sending correct seals by Monday. I am going to pick up a new front windshield later tonight, rear is clean and ready to go. After HOG told me I could not use the early chrome C-trim on my "late" car ( I still think its possible but who knows, anyone done it?) ...I spent hours sanding off the anodizing from my Aluminum T-trim. 100 grit, 220, 400, 600...1200 and polished them up. Back-dating a car is a lot of work. And yeah, I'll take pics even if it is shattered glass.

just brought an impact from the shop and will try in the morning. But wait it gets even weirder, the side that I was able to get the axle nut off... I got my M8 triple square socket and removed the CV joints and axles. No problem. I then go to the side with the stuck axle nut and guess what? My M8 socket is too big and the M6 socket is too small. WTF!!!

Do they even make an M7? But wait, even the trailing arms are different between the driver's and passenger side.

Is this some kind of VW joke I don't get? what the hell do I have here?

Your car is coming out beautifully -- -- My Ghia sets even lower than yours, and I can't even get a low profile jack under it -- what i've done is I keep a couple of 2x4's laying around with one end heavily angled cut (about 25-30*) so I can roll the car up on them -- WAH LA -- it is now high enough for a jack to get under them -- I keep them around to block the car from rolling the rest of the time (I don't like leaving the parking brake set all the time, weird I know)

I can't wait until you tackle putting your rear glass back in, just so I can learn how it is done, and I know you will take a lot of pictures just so us dumb butts can figure it out LOL

Got a good reccomendation for an upholstery shop from one of the bus guys, worked out well. I brought my Newton comm carpet and bunch of pics for the trimmer and he did a great job. Seats are black on black, center is perforated black. He had a 356 in the shop and it was almost the same pattern minus the piping on the VW. He removed the headliner out of the ragtop and re stitched the whole roof plus ragtop so seams line up. The back seat did not sit down flat so he still has that and is removing 1/2 inch from top and bottom and I'll pick it up next week. Sound insulation is a must!

So I finally started/finished a project I've been meaning to get to for a while now. I took off all the side and door panels, and sound insulated them with HVAC insulation (Self adhesive with foil backing)... I figured this would be the cheap route rather than spending the money on dynomat...and if it didn't work, I could always redo them later. While the panels were off, I cleaned up the window mechanisms and cleaned up the door trays. The good news, they were dry, no rust and all seems well. Interesting that the PO put vapor barrier on the passenger side door, but not the other. So, I went ahead and put vapor barrier on both rear sections and both door panels... before I finished the panel reinstall. Other than a little time and some panel alignment issues, all went smooth.

But the best thing about this project was the incredible difference it has made in reducing road noise and engine noise! It's literally a different car now...before, I had to practically shout to my passenger when driving, but now, it's so much more quite. I can actually hear the stereo without cranking up the volume. Even shutting the doors sounds more solid...not that "tinny" sound they use to make.

I highly recommend doing this if you haven't already done so.

My next step is to pull the interior and do the same to compartment behind the back seat and the floors, wheel wells, etc.

Why so? I like the fact that the size/complexity of the object doesn't affect the length of time it takes to "print" one layer. It also gives me some flexibility in terms of the ability to dial in the resolution. Another thing that's nice, though I doubt I'll get to it, is that, with the right resin, I can do "lost wax" type casting of metal parts.

But, extruded plastic or resin, it's just cool to be able to make a real thing from a digital model.

If you don't have access to an impact wrench, this primitive tool, a hammer, and safety glasses will get that axle nut off:
Yes, I will admit to having used one of those many times in the past before I owned an air compressor. Be careful!
