I just received a 74 Thing resto project yesterday. I built this car a "new" Thing front end a few years ago. Its original beam looked like the one shown here. I used a new OE German Bug beam and salvaged all the Thing parts from the old beam. It came out great. If you have the time and tools that is one way to solve the problem.

Or buy this used Thing beam (spindle to spindle for $300) sell the spare parts and get a free Thing beam:

Thanks Ron. I have the strips cleaned up but just not installed yet. I'll try bending things around to get it all to fit.

There is no need to spread the load. The stock curtain frame is strong enough on it's own. You could add a bead of silicone or urethane to the frame but keep in mind that it will not hold on it's own. Some form of mechanical fastener is needed. I do recommend going with 3/16 or 1/4 plexi as the corners break easily on the 1/8. This is smoke tinted plexi.[/quote]

I see what your gettin at....and that makes a valid point. What I think he means by spread the load is that it seams as there is only 4 lonely mounting points to hold the plexi to the frame But if you had another peice of metal that followed the same.lines as the frame the plexi would be sandwhiched between the 2 and hold it more evenly....but I think then it wouldn't look as.cool....comes down to what look you want.to go with....

Ventured out to a VW show about an hour from the home front. Had 2 of my 3 boys with me. Held at San Jacinto Monument/Battlegrounds with the Battleship Texas close by. Great show. Took the ferry ride on way home. unfortunately, small ride and unable to get out of vehicle. here's a pic loading and from the day.

Today I got some time to get the pans prepped and painted with POR15. It was my first time using the POR products and I am impressed with it so far. Everything went fine and I was pleased with the finish except for all the bugs who felt the need to inspect it before it was dry.
Once it was dry I was showing someone how the jack plate goes on and it seems that it doesn't fit the same as it did on the original pans. I know most that the bottom (or top rather) of the jack plate sat against the pan but there is a large gap now. Is something not aligned or am I missing something? It fits the same on both pans and it doesn't appear that the edge of the pan is misaligned. Has anybody had this issue before?

Problem resolved (did not see Citroen's post before resolving)

I removed the snap ring around the steering column. that gave me a few millimeters of play to push an pull on the shaft while exercising the ignition switch. Eventually, they switch turned.

I suspect that maybe the plastic bushing has started to disintegrate I (I do have some slop in the shaft) and maybe a piece got caught up in the steering lock mechanism.

Thanks guys!

I attended the Michigan Vintage VW show in Ypsilanti, MI today; there were quite a few nice 181's there, including a few from out of state. Based on the number of Things at the show, it seems that restored Things are gaining popularity.

I talked up the KTE event with the Thing owners I met, and a few people seemed interested, so hopefully some of them will attend.

A simple oldschool type wind/bug deflector will solve the problem. It is simply a straight piece of plexi fastened to the edge of the hood.

Instead of trying to duplicate the boxed in structure simply remove it all and cut an entirely new one from 1/4 plate steel. Slip it over the tubes and weld in place.
This is mine. 1/8 smoked plexi. Should have used thicker as it cracks easily on the unsupported corners. Must be bolted to the frames as silicone and urethane will not bond to plexi. The plexi gasses out eventually releasing the silicone.

This is similar to what I am intending to do. Want to find a strip I can use on the exterior of the panels to spread the load though.

This is smoke tinted plexi.

As in how well they seal from wind and / or rain?

There is a strip of foam along the windshield frame that they rest on. There is nothing between the front and rear panels other than a 1/16" gap. They are fastened to the stock side curtain frame with stainless machine screws. Wind is greatly reduced, A small amount of water can enter as is true with stock curtains.

They do have one drawback in that they do not open. I usually only use them when the car is parked. Occaisionally I will leave the back ones in if the top is up. For the most part the top is never up when driving. Rain, shine or even freak hailstorms. I drive with the top down. It is quite funny when the sky opens up and dumps. Watching everyone else scramble to roll up windows or put up their tops. We only get wet when we stop.

On other VW products you have to know where to drill a small hole so that you can insert a pin to release the lock. Don't know if this would apply to all years of the Thing or not. I would suspect the location would be the same as for a Beetle using the same lock style.

A search of the Beetle forums would probably turn up a post showing you where to locate the hole. There may be a post here on the Thing forum as well.

First, early or late column? Do you have a plastic or cast steel housing. If you have a 73 it's early. If you have a 74 from about Feb 74 it will be a late. There is a plate that fits around the key part to get to the tumbler. Also you will find a tiny screw holding the cyl. in. The head is less that 1/8 wide. Big brother may be of more help, been awile since I have done this.

I have an extra set of window I plan on doing zipper style. I need to get them stripped and painted, then taken to my Amish guy in Ohio for the sewing work. I had him make me a set of window bags and they turned out awesome.

For the first time in three years my Thing had to be towed home . The wife and I went out for a Saturday Night Cruise and Dairy Queen stop. When we came out and tried to start up the key wouldn't turn to the on or start position. It would turn just enough to unlock the steering though. Mess and fiddled with it for about a half hour and finally gave up and gave a call to Hagarty.

Judging from the resistance, I believe the problem lies with the steering lock, lock cylinder or something else mechanical. I figure the electrical side wouldn't handle the torque I'm putting on the key.

I've got the wheel and switch assembly off. I can't figure out how to remove the cylinder from the lock housing. Don't see any set screw to remove. Black plastic housing may be covering it. No way to remove it without removing the steering shaft. Anybody?

I recently got a "parts thing" that had a roll bar installed. And am thinking about using the roll bar on my restoration

Considering getting the roll bar blasted and powder coated "if" it's an dealer option roll bar ... Including pics of roll bar after it was removed.

No luck with anything locally -- not a big surprise -- so it looks like I'm going craigslist and samba shopping.
