IF the hood is fit on the car right you can glue a strip of felt on about 3/4 of an inch wide and it works pretty good. I have used the soft side of velcro before too, but it tends to shrink over time and exposing glue and making a mess. You can also try to visit your local paint supplier, they usually carry universal weather stripping.
The spacer idea is what i am using, (and have used) on multiple bajas/rails. It works fine and i am using it on my current car. In the field, I actually converted a car from 4 lug to 5 as the four lug drum broke, and all we had was a 5 lug drum and wheel, by using a load of generator shims for spacers!

So would a set of T3 drums bolt up (with T3 brakes) to an IRS trailing arm if the "snout was trimmed for short axle"?

Im not uderstanding why the T1 drum wont fit also. Does it stick out too far, or does it go in too deep?

Hi. i've been doing some reasearch for a while now trying to piece together a disc brake set-up for my 69 baja.

I've found the drilled rotors i want, the hoses, and everything. but i'm stuck on weather or not to use the stock ghia calipers, or the wilwood clone calipers. with the stock ghia calipers, cip1 sells the brackets for use with them. but even tho they sell the wilwood clone caliper, they don't sell the brackets for them. Does anyone sell just the brackets for the wilwood calipers (or clones), for use with VW's? CIP1 sells the brackets for rear, balljoint, linkpin and super beetles. i'd love to find them for the willwood calipers, because i want to eventually use wilwod calipers on my super as well. thanks
Obviously you have missed ONE major connection.... A simple backward trace with test probe will probably find it....

IF this is a BAJA and you have all the lights mounted on fiberglass, you probably need to GROUND each fixture....

Do you have a battery? Just kidding.
Is this stock wiring?
Check fuses, then check ground strap from tranny, whip out the multimeter and check continuity between the negative side of battery and body and chassis. See what that yields.

I fliped the wheel cylinders from the git go so can't compare. I do like the bias swap. The rears do the most and lock up first. I ran T3 drums till August 1st. I exploded the hub section out of the center and thus lost the wheel. Took out the arm so now I run 3x5's with Thing drums.

You could maybe use something like weatherstripping, Try the rubbery foam kind, Thats what I used to seal the top part of my hood from rain and it works pretty good.
I dont have it all around, just up by the windshield.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the switch shown below? I'm unsure if this is the exact one I have or something similar, but the lights on the mechanisim themselves do not light up, and since this unit does not automatically click off, I tend to leave turn signals on for quite a while. Thanks in advance.

Did it used to be easier to press down and it recently got hard or was it always hard to press down?

Everyone beats on my Cheap@$$ HF Bender that I modified to bend 1 5/8 tubing, but it has built numerous NHRA and IHRA certified cages. At $ 69.00, I could not resist. It bends quicker than the high buck units also.

Search for HF Kinker or tubing bender in the fiberglass forum and you can see two different ways to modify it to bend tubing (not pipe).

I also use the HF notcher now for 6 years without fail. Did need to shim the tubing holder part to match the centerline of the drill arbor.

Sooo what do you guys use how much $ and where did you get them? thanks

Thats a fairly common cage in Australia, as by law we need to make it so pedestrians cant touch moving or hot parts.

...apparently in Australia there is no will-power, and a hot engine with an exposed fan belt is the same as a "wet paint" sign.

... I hear that skidplates are soon to be mandated in Australia due to pedestrians throwing themselves under moving cars to lick oil pans....

accident investigation has taught me that 85% of the braking power on cars/pickups comes from the front wheels...

I do agree however that bigger hardware means better stopping power and less fade, just make sure that the fronts are up to snuff too...

good to see you took the plunge... heck, take the easy route...
looking back on my earlier post... i have thought better about it... The later engine mount didn't start until 1973. so you have a 73 and later torsion. i will from now on start my build with this torsion as it is wider, and i can now build my own arms... (the bus hangers are more straight compared to the horns than are the T1 so you will be limited to T2 arms unless you cut off the hangers and weld on the T1 hangers (which will still require modification)... I would find some T2 arms, and weld your own horns on... If you can't weld your own horns...than you have got in over your head, and we will see your car again 5 years later & $10,000 later in tools alone. I only say $10 in tools because I no longer borrow

Fabbing and welding the hangers are not the issue. I certainly don't have all the tools I'd like but if you have $10K invested in the tools to do this bit of work then I want to come work out of your shop.

The only issue I currently face is a lack of experience specifically with VW's and the necessary familiarity with the different types to readily identify parts and/or know which parts work together and/or which parts don't. I’ve have only about 6 mos worth of experience in the VW world…limited to a type 1 thus far. Within my limited experience...if the frame was setup similar to my current Type 1, 4 seater, the parts would already be on their way....tabs, mounts & brackets would going in and the frame would be sandblasted and painted by Xmas….rolling by the end of January.

Long story short...this frame just fell out of the sky. I was not looking for it nor had I planned for it. I bought it because it was too good to pass up. My current winter plan remains...finish the items I have already identified for my current (driveable) 4 seater. Adding this new frame to the mix...I'll research/learn/think on it for a bit...determine the direction & vision of the completed product...weigh in the time, effort & dollar spent to get it there...then decide if I want to build it or send it down the road.

Only real cure for better braking is BIGGER hardware.....

It does improve braking power, as I showed above in calculations. It just does nothing for brake cooling or swept area.

Buggy users have done it for many years. They just switch the fronts to the rear and vice-versa. Reduces braking power to the fronts and increases braking power to the rear. Buggies are so light up front the stock brakes can lock up under moderate and heavy braking so reducing the wheel cylinder helps.

A better cure as Dale states is not just bigger, but better cooling effected braking. Bigger does get better cooling because of pure mass. As a side note worth pondering, the Type 3 rear brakes use a larger rear wheel cylinder and makes the peddle stiffer.

But as the thread states, cheap upgrade and it works well as years have proven.

I have done it and it does make a little improvement.

Think scientifically, If you can make 2000 PSI (pounds per square inch) with your right foot/lever/master cylinder in the brake line (very realistic number in a brake line) this force is spread across the area of the wheel cylinder. The larger the wheel cylinder, (square inches) the more pounds it pushes on the brake shoe.

A 28 mm diameter wheel cylinder has 0.9544 square inches of area. Times 2000 psi will give a force of 1908.8 pounds pushing on the brake shoe. (0.9544 sq inch X 2000 lbs/sq inch = 1908.8 lbs)

A 30 mm diameter wheel cylinder has 1.0956 square inches of area. Times 2000 psi will give a force of 2191.3 pounds pushing on the brake shoe.

Keep in mind that you still have the same sweep area and the same fading/cooling charactoristic as the stock setup, just more force on the shoe.

do i need just the drum off of an early T3?

You need the complete drum, backingplate and internals as the Type3 brakes are bigger than typ1..

Jeff

In this case those back seats are for my trophies....my 5yr & 8yr old...certainly not dead weight.

this is the issue I now have... when i started my project, i had no kids.... now i will have 3 after july!

That's what ebay is for!

ebay? ... uh what, ebay my kids? hadn't thought of that

Or trade them for a nice turbo setup or some nice long travel shocks....

or maybe nav and HIDs...

good to see you took the plunge... heck, take the easy route...
looking back on my earlier post... i have thought better about it...

Well I bought the frame. This thing is in great shape.

The frame has some surface rust but nothing that a good sandblasting won't take care of. Other than this everything else looks great. All the welds look awesome. The king pin and the steering box look to be like new...minus a little grime from sitting out in the yard.

I now believe the seller when he said the frame had never been "on the road". I thoroughly looked it over and couldn't find a single clue to lend the belief otherwise. No mounting tabs for anything, no seat mounts, the shifter bucket was even welded in yet.

Still yet don't know what to do with this torsion. I guess my research begins.

Thanks for all the help this morning.
I know it looks hokey but I'm not a fan of the aftermarket end that uses Allen screws and to lazy to make a nice looking end on a lathe and silver solder it to a shorter cable. I just loop it over and use cable clamps no loose cable wire to poke my hands if I have to change it. It is also easy to change if it gives up while off roading. Thre is a method to my madness.

Any one want to help crew for my rally team at the Rallye de Paris race on Thanksgiving weekend? My normal crew guy can't make it and I need some general help. (Change tires, clean windows, possibly swap CVs or ball joints if I bust them, etc...)

Are there any Dallas or Northeast Texas or Oklahoma people want to spend Saturday (Nov. 28th) at the rally?

i've just used the spacer that's on the swingaxle. i think. hard to remember, but its about 3/8" thick. I would then file the drums on the outside where the splines are(so you can slide the drum all the way to the backing plate. then use the spacer that i mentiond as a washer between the axle nut and the drum. it's kind a backyardish but it's worked for me for years. you have to use older style brakes and stuff, so they'll fit under the drum. It's been a long time since i've done this so i hope i'm remebering everything. you could just use the flat 4 to 5 lug adapter plates(if you have all the 4 lug drums and stuff. then drill out then press in and weld studs to mount the 5 lug wheel with. done that too.
if you look closely you can see that i followed the pan shapes the best i could. I should be able to weld it all together when i'm done, and then weld a cage or whatever i need to to it. Hopefully i'll get some time friday to work on it. if not it will sit till monday.

when i go to put it all together i was wondering if i just got a lot of urethane or silicon and gooped that all over the pan, lift, and body if that would seal good, of if i should do two belly pan gaskets and silcone or urathane or something? any opinions?
The early T3 drum is the right size. It doesn't need a spacer if you are using it on an IRS car. MAJOR difference in stopping power!

guys, its a T4 motor, so it is already designed to fit a bus tranny. The only question is the input shaft length on the tranny. If you put the motor on the tranny and it clunks before the motor is seated all the way, take it back off and cut the input shaft down.

Id also like to use a standard drum because if i break one while out in the field i would be able to salvage a used drum off a parts car

I didn't mean to threadjack riNR. Next time you have your buggy in MI make sure to let me know so you can take me for a ride. I am about an hour away from Windsor. If I look out my window I am sure I can see you towing your buggy down 96.
