you guys are killing me. Every time I get pysched about working on my bug, I see awesome street rails, then I remember why I stopped working on the bug, LOL.
Now if I could just afford a rail and wasn't so picky about the frame design, I want one with a seriously sloped windshield post.

Ok, I've heard that these are very unforgiving to being hooked up wrong.
I don't want to roach it.
So....right now, its' wired to the coil the way it was when it came out of the car it was in last time it was running, its been a while, and honestly,I forgot what wires were going from the car to the coil.
So.... there's a wire coming from each side of the coil, going to the distributor.
Do I just hook a switched hot lead to the positive side of the coil and call it done?

Some of those boat gauge style caps don't work very well for long, been disgusted with them on my boat for years.. On my rail I had room to mount an extra 3-gallon round reserve tank between the main tank and the doghouse.. It has a shut-off valve and T-s into the fuel line, if I run the main tank out I can just flip the valve and run off the reserve..

Hi Scott,
You got the one off of e-bay right?
How large is the od of where the cap fits of your tank?
I just checked mine and The dia. of the top of my tank is 2-3/8"
and the depth is 8-7/8"
I can shorten the rails if the cap will fit.

can't sleep brainstorm ideal.

the hardest part is getting something like that to seal and theft protection.

they are doing great things with plexy and lexon. as you know the rear window has a bit of a curve to it but speciality cutting places can add that curve. if you took your rear window to them they should be able to duplicate it in the same or close to thickness. then you could add a regular or trimmed window seal.

add some latches around to help pull the window in to help seal it.

<img src='http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii53/pafree/stuff4/rearwindowlatch_zpsc17d708b.png' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii53/pafree/stuff4/rearwindowlatch_zpsc17d708b.png','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen." />

get some stainless steel latches to help with corrision.

<img src='http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii53/pafree/stuff4/rearwindowlatches_zps0aabaeb8.jpg' border='0' onload="javascript:if(this.width > 750){ this.height = Math.round((750/this.width)*this.height); this.width = 750; }" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii53/pafree/stuff4/rearwindowlatches_zps0aabaeb8.jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size.

you should be able to add a latch or two on the inside to help the stupids out or even see if all the latches could go on the inside.

It comes right out. Feed the belt through, pull the pin, and the belt will pull out. Watch out for the rewind. You'll probably need to mess with the preload so it rewinds and unwinds correctly.

If it is a din mount you could attach a strap to some of the spare tapped holes on the radio chassis and then attach it to the sheet metal under the front hood. That way it cannot be pulled out from passenger compartment and they would have to get under the bodywork to access.
It's 9 inches from the very bottom of the float rail to the underside of the cap.
It is vented.
The neck of my tank must be slightly larger than the standard cap, cuz when it's on... it's really ON.

I acquired a 1970 dune buggy with manx style body that is mostly complete and I need to install the E- brake. I cannot find any attachment point on the brake housing. This is a 5 bolt brake hub. I found the lever assembly from a bug for the cockpit , but I know I will need to buy cables.

Any help locating how the cable attaches and installing tips would be helpful, Thanks in advance.
I wish I could say for sure. In my previous setup the cooling fan ran all the time when ignition was on. I never had an overheat issue. Then buggy could sit running for 40 minutes without moving and stay cool. I recently just installed a fan switch and will be wiring that up that way cooling takes care of itself and the engine will run at its optimum temp. I don't think it will have any issues because it did such a good job before!

Has anyone shortened retractable seat belts?
I put bucket seats in the back of my '69. I'm
not going crazy enough to justify harnesses,
but I do want to use the 3 point retractables

like the front ones. I would like to shorten the
shorten them on the roller end. Any advice?

Hi TSJ,
I like how your radiator is setting.
Does your fan run very much?
Right now, if I'm moving at all my fans are off. Only after I set still for a while do they run.
With the rad. setting upright It block a lot of sight.

Norm

My fan only runs if sitting for a while not while moving. But to be honest I haven't driven on a very hot day yet. I've thought about making a scoop underneath it that will force the air through it but haven't got around to it yet. Yes having good visibility while looking in my rear view mirror was exactly why I decided to lay it forward.

The Kawa is a sexy beast. If you haven't already, check out advrider.com, great group of folks and if possible, maybe even a better forum than TS. But only because it is much more regional and at one point or another you all meet or have met eachother.
And since you did it, here is my KoolaidTheMan in front of Santa Elena Canyon along the Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park, thats old Mexico on the other side:
Yet another reason TS sucks to post in. Was just checking your progress and saw I have been edited........sure it was a pic of a dirt bike, not a VW but it fit right into our conversation.

I'm sure someone cried about it.

ADV would never delete a pic of my VW if it came up in the thread conversation......just saying. And at least now they can't go back and delete my engine build thread as retribution.....they already did that!

Ugh of course. Feel free to post the pic up on photobucket, edit your post, and put the link in there and put it back up, a bike that nice deserves to be seen
As an update on the baja though, I got my brakes bled and working, and my new blinker relay in, and all the lights work now except the brake lights which I'm working on.

the wing window does have to come out first before removing and go in after is back in.

there are two bolts holding the main glass at the bottom. take those out and let the window down inside the door. remove the wing window and then push the main glass up and out of the door.

you really don't have to remove the main glass to replace the scrappers but just let it down inside the door to give yourself room.

as far as the scrapers: only press where the clips are or it will bend. i think i remember we used a wooden dowel with a smooth end to push in the clips. some even needed a slight tap.

I use a rad. overflow. I think it does keep all the air out of the rad.
(Edited, Added) I have seen the coolant level at max and min on my overflow just from getting up to driving temp and setting over night.

I used the stock manf. from a sc ecotec.
I was thinking about a header for it but maybe going to put a turbo so decided to save the money for that setup.
I went with a dynaflow muff. I know I don't need the two exits but I like the look from behind. Its quiet at an idle and sounds good when you nail it.

Actually the early wiring diagrams for VW are easiest to read, gives wire colors, device location, device identification and terminal numbers..... Right up to 72.... From 73 on they are bizarre.... Use early diagrams as not much ever changed, just new garbage added.... 73 on are a graphic representation of how it function instead of actual locations in 72 and previous...

Hey yabastard69,
Thank you for the props and as far as your question about the motor swap goes here is my 2 cents... The first things to consider are what is your budget, how will you use the car and how are your building skills with the tools you have available?
Read as many build threads on this and other sites as you can! The information that is available on the net will save you tons of time and money! My first car was a Baja Bug that was built in the backyard in the early 80's... I was 14 and had a 65 Bug (with motor in pieces in the back seat) a copy of Jeff Hibbard's Baja Bugs and Buggies, The VW manual for the Compleat Idiot, a stack of Hot VW mags and NO skills. By the time I was 16 it was on and off the road all through High School, it wasn't much but it was a Baja Bug!
We picked up an unfinished project on craigslist for a great deal that had a ton of great parts on it, beam, front arms, combos, rack and pinion, racerunner shocks, trans, brakes, wheels & tires, fuel cell and the list goes on... The cage in the car was pretty rough so we decided to go with the Crumco due to price. If you decide to go that route do research on as many builders as you can, get good references and keep in mind that a low staring price isn't always the least expensive way to go in the long run. Be realistic on what it really costs: With a full tube chassis you will have to do a lot of fabrication: floor tabs, motor and trans mounts, steering, suspension stops and a ton of sheet metal work to mount the body and close the car of from the elements ect. There are some great Baja builds on this site that have retained full pans and body's that have lots of travel and look more than capable on and off road!
My Son and I are very fortunate to have some great friends that have a ton of knowledge in building off road vehicles and have been there to brainstorm when we get stumped (keep me from over engineering things) and lend a hand to keep the project moving. Thank you Dave and Brian!
Food for thought on your engine choice... We had planned to run an 1835 with a 002 bus box, upon inspection of our motor it was clear that we would need to do a complete rebuild. The cost to correctly rebuild our motor was in the same ballpark as the ecotec swap, so it just made since to get more horse power, water cooled, fuel injected with more reliability for the same money. With stock eco hp if the car is driven with some respect the trans and 930 cv joints should hold up for quite some time. If you put a V8 in your car with a ton of hp you are going to really need to beef up your trans and cv's so make sure you price 934 cv's and a Mendi before you buy that LS1!
Take the time to really decide what you want as a finished project, do your research, come up with a solid plan and have a great time making it happen!

I hope that helped and wasn't to long winded!

Great, I measured it out to about 19.5" that apeared to be the where it could not physically interfear with any adjustment. I thought about cutting it at 20 or 20.5 because both rod ends would never get screwed in all of the way. I thought I would play it safe though. I was worried however about leaving a gap that would end up as a week point, hence where the rod would end up bending.

Oh well, its already cut and installed. Hopefully it will add some support. I figured since I had so much of the front end appart and screwed up in the wreck, I'd get everything close, and just bring the car in for an alingment in the next day or two.

As for where I drive. Mostly in the Capitol Forest. Nothing to extreem yet I still need to put a skid plate on. Everytime I go out I'm amazed at where the car will go and then I remember the engine isn't protected and I chicken out.

I guess since I'm posting I may as well pose a new question. The suspension components are still basically stock for the '69 when I bring the car in to get the alingment done should I just use the figures for a stock '69, or is there anything I should change to make it a more sutable Baja?

stock VW wiring always confused me and made pull my hair sometimes. i would pull out the wiring and use DaleM's diagrams to straight line wire the car. you are going to need switches and if your not going for the orginial stock wiring setup then it is the easiest way to go.
I did that. I even took them to kinkos and had them printed and laminated. They are so confusing though.

It's the stock wiring but all the switches have been pulled out and the ignition wires have all been cut. So basically I have a stock harness with a bunch of connectors that I have no idea what to plug them into.

The RTV on the shaft didn't work, so I took it off and oiled the shaft with 15w40 and then greased the washers that were by the spot where it was leaking. I put it all back together, started it up, and it ran MUCH better than before right off of start up. Before, when I started it, I had to pump the gas just to make it run and it ran like crap until it was warm and even when it was warm, it hesitated like crazy when I would try to rev it up. Now there is absolutely NO hesitation. It idles like a dream and the backfiring is gone. Before, when it would go to idle, it would stay at 2000 rpm for like 5 seconds and slowly drop. Now it revs down and idles perfectly. It amazes me how much a little leak can effect an engines performance.
