Some more photos
Did you guys name this spot? This is a killer camping spot!!! It was a little scary to drive down to the spot and come back up alone without knowing my 2wd LSD limitation but made it!!!
Testing my LSD by crossing the creek a few times
What a nice day and view
Blake's van
Nice camping area by a river at Fernwood
I felt bad leaving the group early because of my schedule for next day but I had a real fun time following around the syncros. I'd love to do a little more intense stuff next time to find out what my LSD 2wd limit is.
Thanks guys and nice meeting you all _________________ 90 westy 2wd w/ TBD |

> I wish I would have known that before going through it with my window down
Me too!
note to self, dont turn left through the mud puddle with my driver window open
also note, rolling the window up quickly, half way, when enterting the puddle, does not keep me dry either<g>
> Did you guys name this spot?
If thats the cliff edge where I told you not to drive down, no, you get to name it, for having the courage to go down there by yourself with a non syncro.. did you go back to the peak alone, after the rest of us abandoned you?
My hat is off to you, great respect for your driving, and your LSD. I also really enjoyed having children there, thanks for bringing your family.
I dont think you would have made it up out without granny gear, and a syncro with front wheels pulling, from where the syncros spent the night. You made the right decision.. Although, we could have pulled you up.. There was a washed out section with rocks and ruts that was more eroded than on previous trips.
In my opinion, the peak and the water camp are the most non syncro friendly. The road to bone camp is much less maintained, I had to move branches that had fallen accross the trail, and there were a lot of fallen rocks, in addition to the washed out rutted sections. |

Yup, that's the cliff edge. It was scary going down because the spot is right on the edge of cliff with not much spare room but going down and crawling up was no problem.
I saw the video clips of sunday's driving and yeah that makes me wanna get a syncro $$$$$
I ve already spent $$$ into my 2wd
Isn't there anything like this in Santa cruz mountain? _________________ 90 westy 2wd w/ TBD |

What is really cool about this spot is the first time we went there we found a pair of dugouts perfect for a pair of sleepingbags a few feet from each other. Someone woke up from minimalist camping a few inches from the edge and overlooking the pacific 2500 ft. below.
I have slept a few times along the ridge drive in and at the peak and it gets windy out there fairly often.

Oh, I see. The left turn at the Y opens up at a clearing at a official designated camp shortly. The route that you took is the most interesting and what I was hoping to check out, I am glad that it turned out to be what I was expecting. This is the last of the unknown routes to me in the Los Padres NF in big sur and it looks like the most difficult to get to/best trail. Gotta find new places to explore now.
Very cool. |

FYI
Part of Highway 1 near Big Sur crumbles into the sea; road closed indefinitely:

Yes, that sucks but people can still get there the back way if needed. It isn't nearly as pretty of a drive though.

Drivers who wish to get to Big Sur from the north can take Highway 101 to south of King City and the steep and winding Nacimiento-Fergusson Road to the coast. |

Looking ahead on the calendar, my next opportunity to join a Los Burros gathering in Big Sur would be April 9-10
How do people feel about that option, want to go? |

I will be taking the truck apart and inspecting things, adjusting brakes, repacking the CVs and prepping for Syncrofest so I am out. |

yes, it may be that most Los Burros people are happily busy with other trip and event preparations and participations from now until June.
Im hoping to have my tranny and decoupler fixed in time for a trip at the end of the month.. not sure thats realistic..
So I may do Big Sur Los Burros on April 9-10.as an opportunity to experience my new 31" tires.
Depending on whether the coast route is open to traffic by then. It is currently blocked north of Bixby Bridge.
more info here http://www.surcoast.com/road.html
that weblink above says CalTrans is maintaining Nacimiento Fergusson twice a day now that Highway 1, the coast route, is blocked by the roadslide. So to reach Los Burros from Santa Cruz, I could drive to King City, then cross to the coast.

If the slide was on the other side of Bixby bridge we could have snuck around it on Old Coast Road.
The reports say it will be closed at least a month- I expect it it be closed for most of the summer at best
Here we go again... |

There are a few camps up tassajara road into the ventana wilderness. The drive is decent but not as back country as Los Burros, going through carmel valley is nice though. It is acessable without having to worry about the slide.
China camp with the doggie.
Good to hear that you have a RTT now and can camp out with us. |

I won't be able to go then, Jonathan. Like you said further down the thread:

Sorry to hear about your R&P and decoupler, but I know you wanted those 31's, so...must have been fate.... _________________ '85 GL w/2.1L "The Tardis"

Hmmm... How do you secure a RTT on a single cab truck like yours? Only 1/4 of the bottom of the tent would be resting on the top of the cab...
Some kind of roof extension with racks? _________________ 90 westy 2wd w/ TBD |

syncrodoka is right, a trip through Carmel Valley is very nice. Couple of camp sites in mountains (monastary) I have been in there several times, excellent. There may be snow there now though. |
