I am making a possible trade of my 1958 or older crank handle for this one from a gentleman in Red Bluff area. It is 30" long. Seems way too long for the one I have seen in past threads that supposed to be 22" long where a 1958 or older was 18". He said he pulled it from his 1959 bus he sold. So, is this an actual "stock" handle for a VW or does it look like some other brand that someone just happened to have in his ride?

Curious.

Does it even look like VW anything or just some home-made jobbie or from some other vehicle from back in the day?

Looks like it is for a tractor. A VW crank handle would have a rotating sleeve to hold onto when starting the bus.

You're getting ripped off.

Here's a comparison of the pre and post '59 crank handles

I never made the trade. I always check here 1st. Smile

I kinda of knew it was not right but figured I would ask just in case "for some reason" VW had an oddball for a month or something and that I may be passing up a good one.

So, we are good.

Thanks

I believe that I have one of those long crank start handles in my stash and may be able to shed some light on it. No, it is not the slightly longer 1959 only handle seen in the photo above. It is an VW industrial motor crank start handle, as I have the special frame that mounts to the industrial motor that centers the crank handle on the motor. Pretty cool and rare, but not what you are looking for...

Okay, I may be doing that mod to an earlier, shorter handle also in the future (for my '59 Double Cab). "Amishman", did you modify your handle yet? I doubt you have since I see you still have the handle/trade ad up. Can anyone out there post a photo of the "longer" 1959 only handle installed on a Bus and ready to turn it over (I just want to see how much clearance there is between the handle and the bumper).

Also, if someone has both types of handles, could you tell/show us exactly how much longer the 1959 handle is from the 1958 and earlier? Thanks for any photos and measurements!

Nope, I have not, and have tech know-how to do. I would have to take the handle to a metal shop and ask if they could do such a thing. Cool

Yeah, i don't weld yet, so a friend will probably do it for me...

I would imagine that once the handle tubing is cut, and at the site of both welds, a 2" section of inner pipe/tube whose O.D. is the same as the I.D. of the handle tubing is slipped inside the handle tube. Then the new outer piece is slipped on over that and welded giving it strength, then everything ground and sanded to hide the mod, then powder-coat or paint.

But what do I know... there may be a better method, I'll let my buddy decide once we have the correct measurements.

The trick to lengthening an earlier crank will be finding the correct OD tubing. I have a crappy split-window bug crank that I bought with the intent of shortening for my '59.

Oh, and here's a pic of an NOS one.
