I really have no idea how much Apfelbeck did with VW (or even if at all)
I have just been following the progress of that particular website/engine with interest.

Around 1988, I spent a couple days with Bob Denson who had made an air-cooled 4-cylinder alcohol engine similar to the OP's engine. Quite impressive for a small shop. (I was contemplating having Bob produce VW rods for me.)
