I've been in love with old VW's since I was like 12, so I knew I've always wanted one. When I turned 16 it happened to work out better that I get some random Japanese car, and it was fine for transportation but it was nothing more than that.
As she was, sitting in the driveway:
I was searching within about a 100-mile radius after being burned on a '74 KG 300 miles away and about 3 other non-VW's, but my dad showed me this beauty and told me that we'd have to go to the not-so-great state of Arkansas to get her. I was all about it.
First impressions:
720 miles away, this little '67 was in the hands of some punk kid who obviously knew nothing about cars. I had told him I saw an oval a few streets down and he goes "A what?". That's fine though, I got (what I think of) a good deal on her. ($2700 and very little rust, spotless floor pans) We made the entire 1440 mile trip in two days.
I had to have a pre-68 for all those right reasons (lights / dash)
The dash is in great shape, never been cut. The first thing to be done was that stupid Bugpack-made tray under the dash was coming out. It had a speaker in it, although it wasn't connected! I've since swapped out the 1980's made Pioneer tape deck for an 8-track player (I'm going for that vintage look).
Not exactly sure, but..
Most likely a 1600, for sure a single port. She runs great, like it's been a recent rebuild. I've noticed though a few things though, like a Mexican carb and a Brazilian fuel pump, but at least they're pretty new.
Although not neglected, there's evidence of small fixes..
So the first project was to adjust the front brakes and check the front end. Everything's in great working order, except the right outer tie-rod end was shot to all hell. $20 and 30 minutes later, s'all good again. [If you're wondering what's under wraps, that's my mom's '80 MGB]
Damn 37 year-old tie rod ends...
Tough tie-rod ends won't come off? Easy solution.. heat up the tie rod with a butane torch!
Minor surface rust inside the fenders..
Front brakes were in great shape, just needed to be tightened up. Everything else was great except for that tie-rod end.
Wanna grease my lugnuts?
So next time we don't need to call over Hulk Hogan to pull these things off...
The worst part of the car..
At some point in time somebody kissed a curb or something similar, though it's been sort-of patched with fiberglass (ew!)
And the check-out says..
There's been a few things done to the car in the past, as in there's fiberglass behind both rear feners, but there are new rear brake lines.. so somebody loved this car before it got to my hands.
And, for last..
Installing the Tri-Mil exhaust, for $120 it's the greatest thing to ever do to a bug. I've noticed a huge top-end difference, and the big chrome tips look bad-ass. (I'll get some pictures up later, didn't take any during install but thinking about taking some cool shots by the beach.)
I hope you liked my little slide-show, it took me all of 30 minutes to come up with. Any errors should be ignored, if you take note I wrote this up at 3:30 am. Insomnia.... _________________ 1967 Zenith Blue Type 1 "Elaine"

Congratulation on your new car. It looks like you got a good deal. I hope you enjoy the heck out of it .
By the way reading about your mom's MGG brought back memories of my 1967 MGB. Wish I still had it but my parents sold it when I went to college .

take that grease out of those lug holes on the double. BAD IDEA. that's the one of teh last places you want lubricated. you wont get the right torque, the thread could walk, and the damn thigns could vibrate right out. please, i don't want to see a post from you in the future with pics of a trashed 67 with a wheel that fell off. please.
beyond that, you scored! that car looks super good. _________________ I still need a black 67 T-1 hood. |

I have a question, my 67 came with a round side mirror, but I've seen a lot of 67's with the kind of mirror you have. What was stock? Oe are they both? _________________

they both are stock, it is my understanding that the mirrors were installed by the dealers, some got round and some got the pear shaped one. ive got both. |

to my understanding, the round side mirrors were on early '67s and the pears were on lates. mine is a late, late, late 67 build (july-ish) and obviously therefore has pear-shaped mirrors.
oh, and thanks aircooledberndoggie and Miguel Arroyo, nothing's better than getting complimented about your car, especially when you love it as much I love mine. _________________ 1967 Zenith Blue Type 1 "Elaine"
