looking a buying this car and i see this hanging off the trany...

It appears to be a hot start relay.

In most cases these can be removed as the real problem is corroded connections or electrical problems elsewhere. This includes 6v vehicles.

definately a hard start relay (ford solenoid) used ford parts make a vw run faster

It really just made for a direct connection from the starter to the battery. 40 year old wiring looses alot of juice from the key start to the battery to the fuse box and back to the starter. The relay just cut out the middle man. As long as you don't ride the starter, you'll be ok.
