I've got a good type three stock muffler that I'd like to take the heat exchangers off of to sell. I just came in from heating the nuts with a torch. I'm going to let them cool, soak them with wd-40 and them probably heat them again tommorow. (i want them to come off clean).
my question is which side is the nut on, muffler or heat exchanger.
I don't want to start turning the nut the wrong direction and end up stripping the threads. |

The nuts screw onto the muffler, so it's the usual clockwise to tighten, anticlockwise to loosen.
They can be really fun! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I imagine that they'll be great fun to get loose. That's why I'm planning on taking a few days to mess with them to get them apart.
My first problem was not having a large, thin wrench to grab the nut with. It's kinda funny that a rear springplate was laying on the ground right next to the muffler. With just a light touch of a grinder down the inside of where the axle would sit on the springplate, you've got a nice, thin wrench!

also - try PB Blaster ; works much better than WD-40; pick it up in any FLAPS.... _________________ póg mo thóin

Those nuts screw into the heat exchanger.
Acetylene torch will usually get them loose. Propane torch is doubtful as it doesnt have enough BTU's _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

I'm using an Acetylene torch.
I may give the PB blaster stuff a try. I've had a few other people tell me it's pretty decent stuff. |

WD-40 is NOT a penetrating oil, it's a water displacer. PB Blaster is the best. You may as well spit on the thing rather than waste your money on WD-40...you'd get the same results. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:
