Ok heres a dumb question, but I've been wresteling with it for a while. I have a red '74 coupe, that is going to get paint after the body work is done. I kinda like the 2 tone jobs, with either a black or a white roof. I know this is a total preference call, but I just wanted to hear some feedback on the issue. I am also considering keeping it all red. Was this 2-tone paint job a factory option, or just a manifestation of VW nuts? Speak to me bruthas, speak to me---

Check my website for paint brochures. 2-tone paint jobs in certain colors were offered most years. Unfortunately, I don't have a 74 paint brochure to show you.

My personal opinion: all red looks better, but if you have to - red body, black top.

I might be wrong, but 2-tone option was not offered (factory) for "late model Ghias" (please enlighten me if I'm wrong)...
In your case I would definitely go solid red.

A 2-tone option I think is great looking (besides the L360/L87 of my own Ghia-;>) is white bottom and black top...should be an "early body" Ghia though...

I have seen and parted out Ghias with white tops and solid bodies. I know Vince Bellino, of www.karmann-ghias.com, could tell you if two-tone was a dealer option. He used to be a tech for VW and Porsche dealerships. very knowledgeable. Really, whatever you like is what you should shoot for. Wink

I have always liked the way the black top and red on the bottom two tone looks.

FWIW, I have a 61 ghia that was originally paprika red with a black top. i didn't really like the black top with the red very much. I painted it myself and went with a non VW white, but after many hours of staring at it, I opted to paint the roof black, and like it WAY better. So I guess some colors (IMO lighter/softer colors) look cool with the two-tone scheme, but some colors are best by themselves.

My vote, all red, especially for a 74.

later, Matt

Thanks guys-- I was kinda leaning towards the all red-- i think its a sportier look, and it looks better with other mods.

Here's a link to the best resource I can find on correct Ghia color:
http://www.karmannghia.org/sales_lit/color_combinations.html

Unfortunately, it doesn't list the later years, but I think the previous statement was correct and the factory stopped the two tone by 69.

Of course you could always do something unique. I did the roof on my
70 in tan to match the interior & am doing the body in Irish green. (original color) Looks sweet, draws looks. Cool
