Finally bought the 1958 Beetle Ive been after for a couple years. i've wanted an early square window beetle since i started messing with these things in 1998. i got it licensed and insured today so hopefully it'll be on the road within the week. The car overall is in great shape, needing really only to have the seals replaced and a new paint job. i plan on keeping it stock with the exception of converting it to 12 volts but that may never happen. The pans are still shiny gloss black and the interior is in great shape with the exception of only a few things. The gas tank is nasty inside so it needs repaired and it probably wouldnt hurt to check the carb and fuel lines but the car will run and recently had the entire brake system replaced. it's still 6 volt and is still running a 36 horse engine with split case tranny. at some point the og engine was replaced according to the service records. the og owners manual is in pretty good shape but its in spanish. the car was purchased in brazil on 8/8/58. it has a km speedo and two plastic sunvisors. im not sure what number owner i am but i know the car was in the same family from 1958 to 2003 when my mom bought it. im thinking im most likely owner number three. she said that it was purchased and driven by the father and then given to his son who then gave it to his daughter who didnt want it. she let her boyfriend drive it and when they split up it turned up in the sons driveway one morning. thats when my mom found it and drove it briefly for a few months and then it started acting up and its been parked in their carport since. i brought it home tonight and dumped quite a few rust flakes and chunks out of the tank. the brake lights dont work. nor the blinkers but i plan on getting that taken care of next week. i'll get some pics of it as soon as i can. tomorrow afternoon probably. there are actually a few pics of it on here that i took a few months back. search for hans. thats what someone dubbed the car in the past 48 yrs and it stuck. i had nothing to do with that. |
