Pretty much. What IS different is the selector rod (hockey stick); T1 has the set screw detent on the top, T3 has it on the bottom. You can use the T3 rod on the T1 trans. You could theoretically drill a T3 detent into a T1 rod, but it has to be placed exactly--a tiny bit off and you will never get it to shift right. There are also different axle lengths. You want long. |

if you're going to run aftermarket wheels you may want to
use the short axles, but you will need T1 brakes also. |

thanks for the advice. I am planning on running 5-spoke empi's so does that mean I'll want to go with the short axes? |

Type 3 backing plates bolt up to a Type 1 transmission. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

Or machine 5/8ths off the nose of the type3 drum, so it'll fit the short spline t-1 axle. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I recently swapped trannys and I have run into a bit of an issue. I have a 65 notch and the tranny that came out of the car was geared a bit different than the one I put in. The one I put in was a rebuild out of a '67 square and it is geared much different (lower) in 3rd and fourth. With the OG tranny I could maintain 65-70 MPH without winding the motor too much. Witht he new tranny I am lucky to stay at 65 without pushing 4500 RPM constantly. I was told that the tranny I put in was probably a type 1 with a Type 3 nose cone... Anyway, as of now It really sucks for freeway driving. Any input on this thread would be appreciated, though I think it has been covered a few times before. _________________ Jim in Sacto -

There are two ring and pinion ratios for SW transaxles, 4.37 and 4.12, with most T3s using 4.12 and most T1s 4.37. T1s went from 4.37 to 4.12 at some point, but somebody more knowlegeable will have to jump in. |

According to Kennedy Engineering (I have no idea how accurate this is):
3.88 '62-'64
4.13 '65-'66 '68-'70
4.13 '67
3.88 '71-'72
3.88 '72-'77
Not sure why they list Type 3s to 77 ?? _________________ Phillip Bradfield

I am going from the Without Guesswork book, 1960-1970.
Final drive ratios
Type 1 1200/1300 = 4.375
Type 1 1500/1600 = 4.125
Type 2 1200/1500 = 4.125
Type 3 all = 4.125
Type 2 1600 = 5.375
So, It looks like if you use a 6V T-1 tranny, you get the 4.375 ratio
If you use the 12V T-1 or any T-3 tranny, you get the 4.125 ratio. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey
