|
|
Hey all,
I spent the weekend with VWkombi1966 trying to R&R fuel sending units for his Bus. We learned, through trial and error, how to clean, repair, and reassemble the unit for service. We broke two, but the third time was the charm. It's, my understanding that Bay senders go bad and are hard to find. I can refurbish a unit for service, so if anyone has a bad sender, PM me or e-mail me.
I also want to start gathering cores, so if you're in a junkyard and find a sender, grab it an let me know.
Thanks,
Gary _________________ -

| The bad senders that I have seen all have areas of the wire grid worn through. How do you refurbish these? |

A good, thorough cleaning under the wire grid. I am searching for a source for nickelchromate wire to replace the resistor the float makes contact with to complete the circuit. _________________ -

| The senders for bays are plentiful and available from just about any VW parts vendor, I can't attest to the quality difference between any of them as I bought mine from a VW mechanic. The only bad thing is in order to replace it you have to drop the engine. I have heard of some people cutting access panels in the firewall to be able to replace them more easily. |

Pretty much, but if you have to replace the sender, that's a good time to drop the tank and get it cleaned. We got a lot of varnish, gunk, and crud out of Dave's tank.
BTW - I have been searching for senders and have come up dry. Where are you finding them where they are "plentiful"? _________________ -

How about senders for a 1970? Are those available as well?
Thanks a million,

A little pricey... |
BINGO! I would R&R for much less than that. That's why I am looking for "bad" units. _________________ -

| Sorry, my telepathy isn't working all that great today since you only specified "Bays". I searched BusDepot and CIP1 and they both carry them for 68-73. I bet germansupplyscott could even find some for you if he knew what you were "looking" for. |

OK, those are float senders. I am talking about 1968 - 1972 senders that are contained in the tube. |

If you can do it cheap, I certainly think there will be some interest. I'm certainly not gonna pay $80 for a new one. |

Nobody was interested in the early baywindow fuel sender I had been advertising for 3 weeks on Samba classifieds for $40 shipped??? Plus I guatanteed it. So today Sluggo told me he needs one, I am going to let him have it for somewhat less. Just a reality check, we are all cheapskates, including myself most of all. I think plenty drivers are willing to run without a working fuel sender.
I will be sending you cores Icy. Went out yesterday and today to 5 Pick-Your-Part type yards. Only found 1 late model Baywindow. I can get the senders out in less than 10 minutes. Will not describe my highly classified and somewhat destructive technique. |

I want the self-contained units. BTW - Bay owners are cheapskates. I had a jumpseat advertised for $20, but people balked at the $30 shipping. Evidently, I was lectured that shipping shouldn't cost more than the part. So, I changed the price to $45 and sold it to someone local. _________________ -

Dave (VWKombi1966) and I were watchign Season 6 of South Park this weekend. The episode had hippies outside of Stan's house to support his protest of raising baby calves for slaughter (veal). The funny lines went like this:
Kyle: Dude! There's a bunch of hippies out there.
Butters: Ohh...They're all DIRTY!
We got an extra laugh out of that when we got gas on Sunday after the R&R on Dave's fuel system. The local gas station in my area doubles as a bait and tackle store. Hillbilly to the extreme. So, I said "Damned hippies", and Dave said, "Oh...They're all dirty!" I held up my greasy hands to show that we were indeed dirty. _________________ -

Icy, how much are you thinking of charging? I've got sender on my '71 that needs a little rehabbing. I was just at BD and $80 seems a bit steep, but maybe that's just me. _________________ '70 Beetle
