|
|
It was going too good - hit a big snag.... Installed the tank, cut the hole for the filler (it was a real pretty job - right on the neck!). I tried my filler for size and found that it is WAY too long to work - even if I cut the neck that I welded onto the tank, it is long. I guess that I need another plan - any ideas?
I may have to go with a door like the Vettes have, but then I would still need a filler neck cap - its tubing...!!! _________________ Flaboyjim

| I guess you are saying that the filler has a long neck also? Can it be cut off? Do you have a pic of the filler? Mine just has the cap screwed into the tank neck. |

I moved the filler to back middle of my tank and shortened it so that the VWcap is under hood.I need a filler door to give access to the fill cap. I might use this.
It is available from Mariner's Hardware. Not sure just what you are needing.

Jim, click on your picture first, paste THAT url, then highlight it and click the IMG button above.
Can you cut both neck and filler, and connect both with a piece of radiator hose? _________________ OG JHC

Thanks for the post.... I will get it eventually...
Even if I cut both, there is not enough clearence to put the hose between them - _________________ Flaboyjim

Man, it looks like there's room, just barely. It would be fun tightening the hose clamps though.
You could always lop the neck off and add a regular cap, and use a door like a 'Vette, or check out that aluminum filler door 'Pep-Boys' started stocking. Have you seen that unit yet? _________________ OG JHC

These a relatively new post on similar topic in the catagory - might be some ideas there that may help. I think you are screwed trying to use what you have - It's a shame, because it would look really good.
with my limited knowledge, you have 2 options - a different neck that will most likely be welded on the tank and stick through the hood or a cap on the shortned neck on the tank with a door/cover on the hood which doesnt look bad. This is similar to my biggyhttp://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=256255 _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1776.

| Sure looks like it would work if you cut them both off short. It wouldn't hurt if they were touching each other as long as there is a hose connectiing them. But you can see it better than me. |

| I ran into the same problem when I built mine. What i did is used a smalller diameter pipe to fit inside the outer filler neck then connected them with a hose and clamps. don't use radiator hose, gas will melt it and you will be tearing it apart to do it agian. make sure diameter will accept filler nozzle at your favorite petro station. when you do this, mount your filler neck to the hood first to get the correct angle of the neck to be welded to the tank. Unfortunatley this means doing over but its better to do it the right way the first time or in your case the second time. good luck. |

I think you should be able to make it work by cutting both, but you know better and please if you get there, no radiator hose. Try placing the hose on the tank first, them drop either the entire hood down over the hose or just the top filler?
FWIW, I've also been looking for that same plastic chrome plastic gas lidt from the 70's but no luck short of buying a complete buggy. I can not locate a current suppier to help you out either?
Plenty of marine catalogs have similar, but not the same items to pick from. That style cap gives you access to a regular cap, so it works like a cap withing a cap?
There also is a pretty inexpensive flip lid available, search ebay for gas flip lid for some ideas.
Good luck

Here is an idea, it is kind of getto but it might give you something to think about.
Why not cut the neck off of the tank and make a hole and put a piece of fuel hose into the hole and use "seal all" (gas tank sealer) to epoxy the rubber fuel hose to the tank and then you could push the filler and cap into the rubber hose and put a hose clap on it. Just an idea _________________ Jeremy

Those of you that are looking for the filler neck and lid - I got this one from Berrien, but I have seen the same one in a marine supply house right across the street from Don's (DOMORR) place in Homasassa. It was a lot cheaper there, and said it was made out of stainless steel...
My problem has been put on a back burner for now, I have to leave for Phoenix tomorrow, so I will have plenty of time to think on the subject.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I may have a solution on the way! _________________ Flaboyjim
