|
|
I searched the different Bus sites for campers. I asked the Riviera group and they don't think it is one. Maybe it is an early EZ-Camper. I was told that the Z bed frame should be stamped with EZ-Camper pat#. Seems to have Sundial tent anchors on the roof. The rear cushion is notched out for the hatch to close. There is a back splash behind the water faucet.
We pick the 64 up in two weeks so I'll have more photos then. It started life as a Kombi delivered to Miami. Only options were seat belt points, seat belts, and washer bottle.
We look forward to getting our first Bus. This one was a second owner with original paint which is something I was looking for.

judging by the wood paneling and handels, i think its a sundial
above teh table under the faucet deal, see if there is evidence of a oval tag once being there
my sundial has the same type of handels, wood, and linoleum/tabletop stuff, and the same metal molding around it, and a very similar spout
good score, i like the color _________________ '66 Sundial

Looks closer to a EZ camper than a Sundial. Sundials have aluminum trim
that surround the edges of the doors and corners of the closet. Sundials also used different paneling, The wood paneling on your bus is the same wood Ive had on all my EZ campers except for your closet and fridge paneling.
On your tent, specifically on the awning, Are the corners of your awning poles, do they make a square edge or do they form a rounded corners.
Sundials are rounded.
EZ are squared.
On your M plate, What is your shipping destination code?
Example: UF = San Francisco UA= Los Angeles UP= Portland
Besides all this Info. Ill say one thing, That is a very very nice bus you own! |

Thanks for the research tips. The canvas has outriggers that go to the bumpers. I'll get some shots of these too when I pick up the bus.
The plate said UM which I understand to be Miami. This site was great to research M codes. I don't see washer jets on the front of the bus so I'm not sure why the M code lists a washer.
Did the Kombi always come with the bumper guards and over riders?
I'm told the Stewart Warner gas heater works well. The is a similar fold out table on the side door too. |

| It is not a sundial. It is an ez. Sundials had a sloped seat base. |

The reason I am concerned about the make of the camper is the fact that I am a member of the AACA. The AACA has a HPOF (Historic Preservation) class where they prize unrestored vehicles. These vehicles are valuable because they help other people to restore their cars/buses to original condition.
The AACA however is very particular on how you could get the car from the dealership. Since I don't have the original invoice, I need some documentation to tie the bus to something standard that could be purched from a VW dealership. I appreciate all of the help. |

| The Linoleum floor does not look OG. Have you looked behind the passenger seat up front? EZ camper put their ID tags there on the divider wall or on the passenger dogleg. |

Too early to be a sundial. But i do beleive it is a Caravelle. Looks identical to mine, interior colors and patterns also match others i have seen.
The Curatin covers along the top of the windows are also unique to caravelle. The more I look at this bus the more I am sure that it is definitly a caravelle! Look above the closet door and see if you can see any evidence of a sticker that might have been there..
Heres some shots of mine on the inside!
Note the cutout for the hinges is exactly the same
note the wooden curtain cover
sink and fridge are the same although that doesnt mean a whole lot!
in this pic you can see the tent hooks.!
I have my money on caravelle....
also look at this ones interior... looks to be a match to me!

Wow that does look close. First time I have seen the backsplash like mine has.
The rear seat looks a little different and there is not the cut out in the rear pad for the hatch to close but everything else looks really spot on.
Where were the Caravelles built? What year is your camper? |

SundialCamper AKA Bart is the expert on this... I believe they were made somewhere in the middle of California. Possibly another plant in either oregon or washington! Mine was originally bought in Los Angelos! Caravelle is where sundial came from, or at least the families of the two companies are closely related! I have yet to see a sundial earlier then 65, and believe that caravelle started in early 64 with some late model 63's! _________________ To his their own PBJ

Here are some detailed shots of the interior.
DMNCLNR - your interior seems to be the closest. Especially the little gold piece of trim on the rear corner and the valance over the three left windwos.
Here is a link to my site with all of the pictures.

Too early? 'plain. I thought Sundial started around then-i'm pretty sure I've seen a couple small hatch sundials. _________________ I don't mind eccentric people i just don't care for shit heads.

Pretty Cool! Check this 64 Panel Camper that is for sale. It has the exact, I mean exact, interior as my 64 Kombi Camper. Even the seat fabric is exact (boy would I love to have some if to repair my one seat).
I asked the owner some questions as to why he thought is was a Sundial. I'll wait for his response.

Note the difference.
Sundial started around '63-64 and was Caravelle camper before that. EZ Camper supplied the parts for Caravelle and they weren't satisfied with the quality so they decided to make their own company naming it Sundial. |

| I'm going with Dustin on this one. It's not a Sundial your side table hinges aren't sundial. I see a lot modifications, so it's hard to tell with a lot of these as PO's make changes over the years. |

Thanks for the tips! It still looks most like a Caravelle from the majority of input I have received.
It is amazing that the previous owners (2) didn't change much of anything unless it broke. After a close inspection and cleaning, here is what I can see has changed:
I haven't found a good match for curtain style so they might not be original, the water tank was replaced, two of the spice cabinet covers were replaced, and three window winders. Even the front cabin is all original down to the tool kit and owners manual.
I really like the original floor tile. I worked at a flooring manufacture for several years and this is certainly an old style. They secured a backing board to the floor as a base.
The Z bed did not have any markings on the rails.
Got it all cleaned up and ready to go camping next weekend with the kids.
