|
|
Hey folks,
Anyone out there has an 11-tooth odometer gear they can spare? My speedometer is complete and fully functional, except for this gear. This is the small gear at the end of the odometer shaft. I'd rather locate this one gear, than have to buy an entire speedometer.
Thanks,
Warren |

That gear is a definate weak link in the odometer gear train. They tend to break, split or break a tooth. It is very unusual when a speedo is broken but still has that gear in good condition. I have no idea where you will find one unless you have contacts with a person who is rebuilding speedos. There are a bunch of folks rebuilding those speedos these days. But I have no idea where you could get that gear... |

How about other compatible speedometers? Was this gear used on other VW models? Maybe I could salvage the gear from a more common, cheaper speedometer? |

One of these days I am going to our local wrecking yards. I will try and to remember to bust a few old VW bug speedo heads open and pull some gears. |

The article by Rick Smith which I mentioned in your other post, says there are other VW models that have the brass 11 cog gear, however no info as to which ones.
By the way I'am in NE Iowa about 60 some miles from Lacrosse, Wi.
Author also mentions the super glue fix will last at least 5 - 6 yrs. I believe you said it didn't work for you however, wonder why?? I done one also and it is ok, however I did go to a brass one in another unit. I have the super glued one as a backup. |

If I find a decent plastic one I will cast it in brass. I can rubber mold it and make castings off it then. |

One of the teeth on my gear broke off as well, so I couldn't fix it. I emailed a guy in Florida who supposedly fixes speedometers (john@ccspeedometers) but I haven't heard back from him. The website, www.ccspeedometers, isn't available either. This company and person was referenced in "Rob and Dave's Air cooled Volkswagen Pages". |

I found a source for the 11-tooth gear! Only $15 plus shipping/handling!
http://www.speedometerplus.com/
I'll be giving them a call tomorrow morning... |

Thanks! I like that site better... I can order and pay online and they are located in Virginia. Much closer than Calif. The sooner I get the gear, the sooner and can fix the speedometer and put my dash back together and get back on the road! |
