I would prefer to have an original oil bath filter, but I ended up getting a K&N that seems to work fine. I'm not a K&N fanboy, but they work well enough and are reusable so I don't have to worry about looking for a hard to find paper filter.
My advice is to go here:
http://www.knfilters.com/search/univovalstr.aspx
armed with the measurements for your carb and the space available and go from there.

You could fit a 1971-1973 Beetle oil-bath air cleaner with no trouble. For the love of God, don't go paper. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

HOLD ON!!
Before you go looking for a beetle style oil bath filter per Towel Rail's suggestion, i tried this about 2 months ago and there WAS NOT enough vertical clearance between the top of the carburetor and the top of the engine compartment by about 1/2".
I'd like someone to verify one way or another so the original poster knows it won't work or so I'll know if the body of my Thing has sagged on the pan that much. Either way we need to know

That's interesting. I kind of ASSumed that anything that would fit in a Beetle compartment would fit in the larger Thing compartment. Just goes to show that we need volunteers to try it! (Perhaps I'll go to the junkyard this weekend and pick up one for myself.) _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

I thought it was going to work, too with how much bigger the Thing compartment is. But thing is, the engine sits under the luggage compartment in the Thing where on a beetle you have the deck lid hanging out there.
