I am seeing a lot of changes from a 52 to a 54. I know some of the changes (tail lights, vent wings, dash pod). What are some of the small changes in parts? Wheels, ragtop, door mech's, semaphores? Are all the other parts the same?

There are a huge number......the parts numbering system changed so all the part numbers themselves changed.

Steering column, gas pedal, hand brake, front seat, foot bar, speedo, fuse blocks, outter door handles, license plate light......it goes on and on.

DAMN, I have a lot of homework to do. Can we start from the middle and not the top? I would like to see some of the changes in pictures (if possible). Like the front seat frame? I have the pedals and the steering box, and pod w/ speedo. Outer door handle pictures would be nice ,to see the changes . I have alot of the parts you are talking about. I just want to make sure that they are right to the year.

Sorry, there are no '52's close by to shoot photos of. Perhaps someone else will chime in with some more info and pics.

Start with Tonny Larsen's site, www.barndoor.dk It has a multitude of information and usually a chassis number breakdown for what details were used for what numbers and lots of pics you just can't find anywhere else.

The mirror arms are different as well are the taillights, which are very difficult to find, I need a set too! Vent wing windows and their latches too are different. The deck lid "T"-handle is different as well............Though there are allot of parts that are the same or can be used.

You need to post some pictures up in dis mug to see what you got??

If I were you..........I'd put it together and just drive it! Don't make the mistake most people do and put it away dreaming it will one day be 100 % restored and correct!!!!!!!

If your out in Florida?? You need to hook up with the JDL of the BDM......they can give you some pointers or help you. Or ask up in dis mug!

LONG LIVE THE BUS FARMERS!!!!!!!

You cant go on year for barndoors there are so many changes going on in such a new model that things changed month to month, so just memorise you buses year and month and chassis number and use www.barndoor.dk

Very Happy

Definately. This is also true for later buses, as many (if not most) changes were at seemingly random times, that had nothing to do with model years.

So a deep skylight presssing BD would have a different rag section then when they changed to the shallow stamped skylight windows that they continued through 67. That makes sense.
But what about the header bow and handel, would that be the same from 53 through 57/58 or 59? or were there different ones?

Or buy David Eccles book, it has a lot of information, and a VIN number list with changes.

The insides. Early ones have four tumblers instead of six.

Yes, the door key was changed I think at the end of '53..but I don't know exactly when. This means the cargo door and drivers door handles are also different, (though interchangable). All the ones with the old style part numbers I've seen have had the old style key, the ones with the later part numbers have the 54-63 style key. But there are plenty I haven't seen!

Ignition key stayed the same, though.

Bubba, go buy the Transporter Spec. Guide by David Eccles if you don't already have it. There are about 5 pages of changes by VIN number for the BD era alone. This should answer some of your questions, a LOT more than this thread did! <g> (If you do already have it, check it out! Wink )
