I have Mangles (typical VW) Chrome "wide" 5 wheels (15" x 5.5") on my 1973. I installed 205/75/15 tires I'm not sure if those 235's will fit but the 205's fit great and no rubbing. I read ""somewhere"" that on a stock Thing, the largest tire that would fit, on a (15") rim was a 205/75/15. I don't remember where I read it, but I'm happy with my choice

Another thing to consider is tire size vs speed vs RPM's

With 205/75/14's at 3,000 RPM's, your speed is 60 MPH
With 205/75/15's at 3,000 RPM's, your speed is 63 MPH
With 215/75/15's at 3,000 RPM's, your speed is 65 MPH
With 235/75/15's at 3,000 RPM's, your speed is 67 MPH

There is a significant ratio between engine speed, actual speed and engine cooling.

The slower the engine turns, the less air is blown across the cylinders. This is OK, if you're using stock tires and driving slow but add larger tires where your speed is higher and the engine speed is lower and you could run into a significant cooling issue.

Same difference with a taller 4th gear or a freeway flyer transmission. You could overheat the same motor by trying to drive too fast in a lower gear or too slow in a higher gear.

A larger tire is equal to changing the ring and pinion. When we move back to Yosemite I will have to put a larger motor in or reduce the tire size.

Possibly. It all depends on whether you have all the necessary tin and seals, and how you plan to drive.
