Maybe an extractor with dual mufflers? That's the best I can come up with. It's less restrictive, but VW's seem to be more driveable with a little backpressure. |

Oh. Dual mufflers. The Thing Shop sells a system like that. |

The Thing Shop system has 1 and 2 on the same header/muffler and then 3 and 4 on a separate header/muffler. The two sides are uneven in operation because 3 and 4 fire in sequence but 1 and 2 don't.
I've been researching headers for a couple of weeks and I've never seen a 2/3 and 1/4 dual setup. What are the supposed advantages? I guess you would get more of an even operation as two sides would be firing in paired sequence, but I don't see how you would get any scavenging (the headers won't be of equal length, each header spends half the time with out exhaust flow), so I'm not getting the point.
I'd be interested to hear an explanation. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |

Let us know how it goes -- I'm really curious to see the results. My concern is that on my Thing Shop system it is the "in sequence" 3/4 side that has the most vibration as opposed to the 1/2 side where the pulses are more spread out. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |

The firing "sequence" on the 1/2 side is the exact same as the 3/4 side, as far as I know. Guess I could be wrong? Likewise the grouping of 1/4 and 2/3 is essentially the same. Maybe he wants to keep the evens and the odds together, and get fancy keeping lengths the same, otherwise I just don't see the point of criss-crossing around. Be better to ask the performance crowd at this point, though they'll just tell you to get a merged header and be done with it. |

You're right. I was staring at the diagram and had a brain freeze (although my 3/4 side does run rougher on my car for some reason).
Now that I've thought about it, the functional difference between the Thing Shop system and this one is that the Thing Shop system has the cylinder with the shorter header in each pair firing before the cylinder with the longer header. The system in the diagram has the cylinder with the longer header firing first.
Brain freezes aside, I still don't understand how this system works better than a merged header. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |

It can't. I think the only reason for a dual muffler setup as shown above is for better ground clearance. I'm still voting for the extractor. |

Right. After looking at Bucko's military 181, I can see that the dual header has a practical purpose in allowing for (a) better ground clearance (b) hand cranking the engine (in addition to the hole in the bumper, military 181s have a hole in the rear breast tin and a special nut on the crank pulley) and (c) use of a trailer hitch. I don't think that I can include performance on that list. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |

They should have re-tested the stock muffler with the new main jet. |
