I have a 1974 VW Thing...

Problem 1: Engine noise

I have a 1974 Thing with a 1600 cc engine. The engine has just been overhauled. I've got the valve clearance ajusted to 0.15 mm. However, when I drive the car, I hear noises coming out from engine. The noises sound just like noises that come from the valves (tak...tak...tak...). The higher the r.p.m., the more and faster the noises get.

Problem 2: Ignition points burn

I'm using the BOSCH blue coil. I've replaced the condencer so many times and the points still doesn't last long.

Please help. I would love to get those things fixed before summer is over. Thank you.

You've adjusted your valves too loose! The valve clearance should be 0.006

See Rob and Dave's webpage for more details:

http://www.vw-resource.com/valve_adjust.html#clearance

As for the points, make sure you have them adjusted properly as well. The clearance should 0.016

This should get you back on the road and quiet your engine!

Good luck!

I never said I was smart... Sorry if I confused anyone other than myself.
