|
|
I'm off in a half hour or so to pick up a new gas tank for my Thing. Thankfully, German Automotive, and old school VW shop here in Western North Carolina has one in stock.
With luck, I'll have my Thing properly up and and running late today or by this weekend. Depending on how the tank looks, I may POR-15 it before putting it in.
The fun part is going to be draining the old gas out of the tank. Alas, it's near full. No worries, though. I have an empty Acerbis Paris-Dakar BMW motorcycle tank that's 44 liters, or 11+ gallons, that'll happily house the fuel.
Fun fun. |

Don't forget the tank screen. Change ALL your filters and flush out your fuel lines real well. Also, drain and flush the fuel bowl on your carb. You'll be golden!

Bmwloco,
You have a website or phone number for German Automotive? I live in the Goldsboro area and it would be great to have a local parts supplier... |

Whitey has been a Thing pilot since the old school days. Some of the photos in his shop would make current Thing owners blanch and cry.
You can reach him at:
German Automotive
P.O. Box 517
Fletcher NC 28732
828.684.0684
828.684.2859 fax
No web site that I know of. Whitey is a great guy and a good source locally. |

Eeeeewh.
Got the old gas tank out; yuch.
Lots of rust. I personally experienced it when I SUCKED IT INTO MY MOUTH.
It's the cheap, easy way to syphon gas.
New tank is cleaned. Old tank is outside and venting to air.
I'm going to leave it as it is for a few days. Air out, look at everything. Replace what needs to be replaced. Prep it for the Gas heater.
Yeah. Slow is good. |

Looking under the tank area. Whew. I've got a little work to do.
The fuel line has a "T" connection, obviously to feed the Gas Heater and the carb. I found the connections going to both threadbare and crumbling.
When I took the nut off the bottom of the old tank, the one where the fuel drains, it was completely encrusted with rust and gunk.
In retrospect, it's amazing that I was able to drive this Thing from Ohio to NC in one day several months ago.
But then again, I learned long ago - any good VW or Porsche will always get you home. |

With your old tank out of your Thing, could you please tell me what the outside diameters are of the fill and vapor openings? I want to buy new hoses locally and need to know the correct size, without having to take mine apart and then not being able to buy replacements...
Thanks! |
